Any hacks to fix silence/vibrate/ring switch? - OnePlus 6T Questions & Answers

Hi folks,
My global version 6T has developed what is likely a physical issue where it switches from ring to vibrate just fine, but going from vibrate to silence often fails when pushing the switch up to the top position. There's nothing obviously / visibly blocking switch travel. It feels like it clicks to position, but no change to silence about 5/6 of the time. Repeat several times, eventually works.
The phone was bought in December 2018 and I'm the only owner. No other problems with it and it is completely stock and up to date.
It has occasionally had this problem for a year but now it's gotten worse.
Any hacks short of sending for repair or opening the phone up?

I had the same problem with my 6T. I used the OnePlus Diagnostic app from apkmirror & it solved my problem.

Interesting! I will check it out. How did it fix it?

So I ran the diagnostics. Sometimes it detected the silent switch sometimes not. I'm unclear as to how to improve the situation using the diagnostic. Any detail appreciated.

paperclip

The issue is the switch not the speaker [emoji3][emoji3]

The picture shows the switch.

Thanks. So far I haven't identified any significant crud in my switch travel area but still a good thought. [emoji106]

I'm also dealing with it at times. Sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.

Nothing specific actually. I just ran the diagnosic app. First time it detetected the silent switch & the problem was solved. It never occurred again. I guess it was a software problem.

Also had this issue.
I am was not able to see any sort of dirt in the upper switch area, but it was there.
Use a paper clip or fine needle and try it.
It my case there was a very tiny dirt which prevented the correct top position.
Just stick something in and let us know.

So, I don't have a solution to fix the actual switch, but RussianBear figured out how to set the ringer mode in software so you can bypass the switch, if you need to.

Good find, but I'm not rooted so in my case no dice.
I poked a stiff wire in and pulled out a tiny bit of gunk.it seems a little bit better now. I just have to be careful to make sure silent mode engages.

Mine does this too about 20% of the time, I never knew it was a common issue

Two Issues, help please

Hi, got my OnePlus two today.
I have two issues so far.
1. The home button seems to only work 1 or 2 times out of 5 presses. Should I RMA?
2. There is no native exchange email support. Anyone know why?
Brendan

The home button sucks on mine too. Doesn't always register touches. Useless as a fingerprint reader too. I am using onscreen buttons.
Don't know about the email: I use Nine (by far the best exchange email app) which works fine.
Sent from my SM-T800 using Tapatalk
Just a tip: I found turning vibration on touch setting on and sliding my thumb slightly up the button makes the home button work better. I think we just need to get use to a button that doesn't actually move.
Sent from my SM-T800 using Tapatalk
if you press it like an button it works well, dont lightly tap it like the screen
I heard that they will fix that problem with the home button with an OxygenOS update!
I hope so. It's nowhere near as good as the Fingeprint scanner on my honor 7

I just got mine. The Home buttin is pretty fine. You have to get learn how it works.. Because the home buttin is under the FingerPrint Sensor. I don't have any problems, maybe at the start but now it is ok! As for exchange email you just use GMAIL app!
EDIT:
For exchange email , download Gmail exchange apk from APKMIRROR and install it. Don't forget to open unknown sources first.

Same issue for me. Its grounding because my hand is also on the metal frame of the phone. If I put the phone down and tap the home button it registers, same if the phone is flat in my hand and not touching the frame, works perfectly. Really annoying.
Major home button issues for me too. I had to switch to on screen buttons because I was getting too many missed home button taps and it was driving me mad.
Wondering if it's a hardware issue with all of them or just some. Maybe the people who don't have issue just have oilier or sweatier hands as very dry hands seem to make the home button less sensitive.

good to hear, maybe that's why they slowed up the invites and fixed it quietly.
My home button is working flawlessly
I think it's about getting used to this home button. In starting I too had issues with home button but now I don't. Just give it some time.
If you have oily or sweaty hands and not really dry ones then you probably won't have an issue ... until winter.

Haha! Yeah. True. The official forums are full of people getting really irate with this.
Mine's fine -- acts up every now and then. I've added an assistive touch button instead of activating the on-screen nav buttons. Saves space and is generally not intrusive -- sort of like the way Apple's own assistive touch button is.

Agreed. Since I started pressing instead of lightly tapping it works fine.

I love this phone but problems with Home button are a little bit terrifying....Actually I've put my OP2 into gel case and problem with home button is gone...so it is really because of hand touching the bezel...WTH :?
I just believe that the bezel is a touchable one and we will receive some kind of nice feature like grab and squeze a phone to make a screenshot or something...OP please, do not kill my faith in You...

I wish it was a feature, but honestly, it seems like a design flaw. It doesn't seem like it's affecting all the devices, but it definitely is affecting the one that I received today. If I push the home button like a physical button it works fine, but if I tap like a capacitive button it doesn't work often. My guess is that there's no way around this, and that Oneplus won't consider it a problem.

What batch do you have? Mine is dated 08.10.2015 on the back of the box. I'm wondering if it's device specific.

Wow are you are the one I was looking for, I ordered Honor 7 from small for UK and meantime I got Invite for Onwplus 2 which make me confused and I don't want to sell my account to someone so I ordered two days ago and not processed yet, same thing with Honor 7 ordered on 2nd but still waiting
I like both phone but price for Honor 7 is simply just blow OP2 and premium body, Irda, FM radio, Cat 6 and fast charge so Honor 7 is my 1st choice, I am plan to sell OP2 as it comes without even opening as there is NO point keep two phone without NFC as Android pay is just around the corner, As you are having OP2 and H7 I would like opportunity so ask you about with
Which one have better fingerprint reader?
Which is one have better camera quality?
Which one have better screen?
Sound, audio etc.?
Do you think is impossible to put two SIM + 1 SD altogether in slot as somebody scribe in Chinese forum ?
can you advise which one to keep ?

Thanks! It's moving like 0,3mm but I guess that's not an issue and won't get worse
It moves a slight bit but so do all the other buttons.
I find all buttons jiggling a bit. That was the first thing i noticed when I took OP5 from the box. But it does not bother me much.
It's definitely looser for me in the middle or top position but it is very slight. Doesn't bother me...

Proximity Sensor issue ... I think

Hey guys,
My Oneplus 5 is working fine without issues but when I make a phone call and have the phone up to my face on almost every call the speaker phone ends up going on by itself. I think this is because the screen is turning on even though the phone is up to my face which would probably be the proximity sensor. It might be worth noting that i use the phone on my left ear as I am a lefty. Is anyone else having this problem and does anyone know a solution to this problem?
Thanks!

No I'm not using anything but a cheap gel back protector.
I have the same problem. But I thought the screen was turning on because of double tap to wake .
Same issue here, I even started a thread about it weeks ago. Seems like there must be a dodgy batch of sensors.
I'm going to send mine back under warranty once I can get my 6o back from my daughter so I have a backup phone.

I have the same issue. I used *#808# to check whether the Proximity sensor is working as it should. And it does. For me it more looks like a software issue

Strange fingerprint issue

For some reason, I just can't unlock my phone with my left thumbprint. It works perfectly with my right one. I've removed and re-added my left fingerprint several times. Sometimes up to 3 copies of it. Regardless of what I do, it will not unlock with the left one.
Sent from my ONEPLUS A6013 using Tapatalk
Did you try another finger?
Maybe your device is not accepting a second finger, but trying 3 times the same thing is not helping to isolate the "problem"

I have the same issue with my left finger, not entirely useless but it is much more difficult to use it.
I had that issue when I was using 9.0.5, it works sometimes with my left thumb, but works perfectly fine with my right thumb .
After updating to 9.0.6, I decided to remove all my fingerprints and re-add them, and now it works fine.
Give it a try if you have updated to 9.0.6.
I did actually, removed all of them and readded them in a dark room.. again I have the same behaviour. It's not that frustrating because I also have face unlock and the right finger but....
Same issue here and at least now I know I'm not alone. Right thumb works fine Everytime yet left works maybe 5pct of the time, or less . It's very frustrating
Same for me. I added both thumbs and both index fingers. Only my R thumb (the one I use 90% of the time) works reliably. I've tried deleting and re-adding the other fingers multiple times without effect, but I haven't tried since the upgrade to 9.0.6
Re-did my fingerprints on 9.0.6, now all 4 work. Could be a coincidence.

I will try this! I'm on 9.0.6 and gave the same issue with my left thumb. Thanks!
In my case I added three different fingers and had no issue with any so far. Of course it hasn't the fast response of the regular fingerprint readers but is not that bad.

I've seemed to notice that the angle must have to be exactly how one of the prints was recorded. Even with this, I can only get it to work 20pct of the time .
I'd much rather have a dedicated print reader like my v30
Had same issue. Only one finger working consistently. I just changed the wallpaper back the original one it shipped with and the scanner issue has resolved!
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the fingering reader is a learning type, so the more you use it the more it recognizes what produces failed and successful attempts. It's quite possible that we're just not using our left thumb as often and that the algorithm doesn't necessarily differentiate right from left, but just knows what the different prints look like, which ones to accept and which ones take priority in the line to make more accurate. This might be something worth sending OnePlus feedback on.
So far I think OP should really optimize whatever can be done in software to be more forgiving of different angles. If the angle is the same, the reader works always and fast. So it's entirely capable of reading fingerprints correctly. Why are the "regular" readers not having problems with different angles is beyond me and I suspect (and hope) it has to do with software.
To be honest I fail to see how the reader could be "learning". If it doesn't unlock there is no mechanism to tell the system that the finger was correct. If it does unlock there is no way to tell it if/when (hopefully never) it shouldn't have.
So what could it be learning from, I don't get it.

Actually in coding I'm pretty sure anytime something receives an input value it gives an output. Something happens from the moment the scanner realizes there's an object waiting to be scanned, it produces some kind of expected coded result which causes this or that particular activity to happen or not happen. It isn't that difficult to see how it could be storing particular information to "learn" from.
Has anyone tried replacing the stock screen protector or removing it completely to see if that affects the fingerprint scan behavior?
I think you guys are just more coordinated with your right thumb so you place it perfectly everytime but when it comes to the left one which in sure you rarely use it's more difficult. I would suggest just using your left thumb for a day or 2. Then see if it improved

I can confirm that training sessions for my left thumb, after initially registering it, helped immensely. Whether the reader was trained, or I was, or both, is a matter of some debate. [emoji106]

Lift to Wake?

Anyone having problems with lift to wake such as unsuccessful attempts and late wakes? My wife has an iPhone 7 Plus and I find it very accurate and fast.
No mine is pretty fast and consistent.

Mine wakes up fast but inconsistent. Sometimes it doesnt even detects that I lifted my device.
It's inconsistent at best, borderline non-functional at worst. I've stopped relying on it and trained myself to double tap the screen when I pick up the device.

Yes, I noticed it as well, two exynos units of different batches showed same result in my usage and
has been like this from the beginning.
mine has been great. Like years ago using Gravity Screen on s7 edge.
Strange with the problems, as I think this feature is common and easy to implement.
