U Ultra broken fingerprint - HTC U Ultra Questions & Answers

My fingerprint so home button suddenly stopped working yesterday. Despite of switching between lots of roms the situation has not changed. What might be happened? How do I determine whether it is hardware based problem or not ? Fingerprint unlock option does not seem in the lockscreen security section. Thanks in advance.

1. Are the other touch buttons working? (Back and recents)
2. Is the fingerprint button very dirty, or had been scratched?

1. Yes; back and recents buttons are working.
2. I dont think so. Looks solid and clear.

Up

It will recover itself after some time and after a phone reboot.

[RANT]The worst thing about the Atrix

I cannot stand the fingerprint sensor/power/lock button. Just because, it's ridiculously placed. If it were on either side - fine, that's good, I don't have to hold my phone like a tennis ball.
The placement isn't the main reason I hate the thing, though.. I have two more reasons - reasons which may be resolvable (input appreciated in that department )
1. When you try to unlock the phone, the backlight comes on, but no display.. Have to lock and unlock again. Also happens when ending calls sometimes. - multiple ROMs.
2. ABSOLUTE WORST THING IN THE WORLD - makes me want to inject battery acid in to my eyeballs - fingerprint sensor navigation (as seen in cm7/cm9) - WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY DOES THIS EXIST? Not only will it be randomly navigating the screen whenever a finger goes near it, but every time you want to lock the screen - you first have to see an ugly yellow selection indicator fly across the screen.
The good thing about fingerprint sensor navigation is that you can disable it. The bad thing about fingerprint sensor navigation is that its settings in jokersax11's CM9 are seemingly unavailable.
"com.authentec.Truesuitemobile has stopped working."
I guess this is just me ranting. It is rather annoying, because the CM9 mod in question is rather cool, and I'd love to use it, but I can't ignore that annoying fingerprint sensor navigation.

I think there are mods around that can make you use the volume button as unlock button, also you can try other lockscreen app that can simulate this also.
1. I have no issue with this. Have tried many ROMs.
2. I think disabling the navigation should not make any problem, somethings must be wrong with your setup. But I have only used CM7, haven't try CM9 yet so not sure if CM9 behave differently with this disabling fingerprint navigation.

The problem with using the volume keys to unlock is that I use my phone as an mp3 player, and actually use the volume controls while the phone is locked in my pocket - though I have tried it, and I don't have the issue with the screen not waking properly when I do. ;x
Here's a thought
If u don't like it that much get an Atrix 2. Not trying to be a **** but it's a thought.
The rest of the phone is great, though.
& the Atrix 4G seems to outperform the Atrix 2, so I don't think that'd be the phone I'd consider, if I were to make a change. ;o
I have no problem with the placement of the fingerprintreader/unlockbutton and i have absolutly normal hands.
But the problem with the fingerprintnavigation can be solved easily.
Just go to setting-device settings- fingerprint sensor navigation and change "NAV Enable" to disable.
And after a restart your problem is solved.
But in the moment this is only possible with CM 7 , in CM 9 you can't disable it in the moment.
I'm pretty sure you can set the volume buttons to adjust the volume and have it as the "wake" key. What would happen is you would have to press the volume button once and then you can adjust the volume while it's still on the "lockscreen". Then after you get to the volume you want the lockscreen will shut off after about 3 seconds. You would still have to "slide to unlock" to completely "wake" the phone up.

Yeah, that's what's bothering me, haha.
CM9 is looking fantastic, had a play around with it last night, but that fingerprint sensor nav is an absolute deal breaker.
Have you never attempted to look at your phone whilst laying down, gone to unlock it, and have it drop on your face? I really find the button placement awkward. Maybe that's just me. Haha.

Ah, I also forgot to mention that I use the volume keys for track skipping (hold) - I thought I read somewhere that enabling volume key unlock would disable the track skipping function.
I just noticed you mention using CM9 so my experience is off of CM7 but I think the "volume unlock" and "track skipping" can be enabled at the same time, which is why it requires a "hold". But, again, it could be a different story on CM9 (as of now anyways, while it's in alpha).

I like the finger-print sensor and placement of the button....
What do you like about the fingerprint sensor?
I see it as being a little bit pointless on a *TOUCHSCREEN* phone..
Obviously, these are just my opinions, and everybody has their own.

Just want to clarify - I'm not talking about the fingerprint unlock function - that's pretty cool.
Regardless, the sensor nav. should definitely be an optional extra (flashable .zip).
Whoever decided it needed to be included in every single CM release needs to go back in time and decide differently, lol.

Not currently possible in CM9.
Also, it shouldn't be something you have to turn off. As I said before, I think it makes much more sense for it to be a flashable extra.
Weird. I disabled that navigation in CM9. Try entering the menu in landscape. If it force closes, keep trying!

What CM9 release are you running? I've tried the latest from jokersax & turl, and I can't get it off in either lol
I am still on cm7 but on cm9 does the fingerprint sensor not work?

Being able to just touch the home button to unlock, instead of actually pressing it??

ok. before i received my s7e, i saw on some tips and tricks vid, that you can change having to push the home button down, to get to the fingerprint unlock, to just touching the home button, and the fingerprint unlock will kick in. but now that i've got my s7e, i have watched at least twenty vids, and haven't found it again. a google search turned up nothing. so, does anyone know how to do this? if so, can you direct me to the instructions, or just outline it?
Simple answer you must press the button first
How many threads to you plan on starting with simple questions that can be found all over the forum?

If the screen is ON, but locked, you don't need to press the button. But for the fingerprint reader to work the screen must be on, so you either need to press the home button or the power button first.
Protip: Or press and hold at same time and it's one fluid motion.

first, m3ddog, the whole idea is NOT to have to press the home button, but to just touch it. second, brava27, i have searched through out the board, and have not found a single answer to this. what i have found is people misunderstanding this, like the other quotes on here. so if you have nothing substantive to add, stfu! lastly, meyerweb, the whole point is that the screen is OFF. i said when the screen is off, or only the "always on" feature is showing, there is an app, which turns the home button into a capacitive button, so you can just touch it to launch the lockscreen, instead of depressing it. that is the entire reason for the thread, to get to the lockscreen where i can use my fingerprint, without having to acutally depress the home button. hope that clears it all up.

Can I ask why you are so against pressing the home button? Is yours defective? Are you trying to avoid wear & tear?
There is a solution of sorts.. install gravity screen pro, which turns on your screen when you pick up your phone.. then you just touch your finger to the fingerprint reader and wala

yeah, the whole idea is past experiences with wear and tear of home buttons being pressed so much they fail. and my problem with your other solution, if i am right, is that the sensors are always on, looking for you to pick up your device, which kills battery life. if i'm wrong about this, please correct me, however. the other thing is i saw it in a tips and tricks video, and it worked perfectly for the reviewer. but now i can't find that video, and didn't write down what it was. but i might try your gravity screen pro. thanks for the tip.

meyerweb, you obviously didn't understand perfectly well what i said, because i said that i saw a video, where the reviewer DID use this technique to get to the lock screen several times, so it obviously DOES exist. just because it doesn't come into contact with your little world, does not mean it doesn't exist.
I suspect that the video you saw wasn't actually showing what you think it was. Which is why you can't find it again.
After giving up on trying to enable soft nav buttons without root. I started searching for similar funcationality.. ie use the finger print scanner as a capacitive button.. stumbled across this.. I think this might interest you.. There's an app call easyhome https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jamworks.easyhome&hl=en
It doesnt work from the lockscreen, but if you use the power button to turn on, then with this app you could essentially never press the home button.. It seems to work pretty well from my 5 minute look..

I was about to suggest the wave to wake option

You can use the following to turn on the screen and use fingerprint scanner without pressing the home/power button.
1. Open the Settings application and go to the Accessibility settings
2. Tap to open the Dexterity and Interaction settings
3. Touch the Easy Screen Turn On option and make sure it is toggled ON. (If you want to disable the Wave to Turn On Screen feature on Galaxy S7, make sure to toggle it OFF)

Any way to wake the device with the volume buttons?

On the old nexus i had the rom had wake via volume.
I have a feeling my power button on the axon will suffer the same fate as ,my old nexus with the broken power buttons.
Changing the power to power up with power or volume up kept the phone running until got this phone.
Is it possible on stock rom to do this?
Thanks
Why don't you use fingerprints to unlock the screen or double tap to wake feature?

Either your Nexus had a cheapoass button or you had really bad luck. That's not normal at all, it's most likely that it won't happen. But the fingerprint sensor wakes the phone without turning the screen on anyways. The DT2W feature is horrible on stock and LOS so just use the fingerprint sensor

Nexus was known for **** power buttons. I broke 4 phones just with the power button. I think i hit the button about 20-50 times a day.
I don't really want to put my bio info on the phone. I am trying to find something else i can trick the FP sensor with.
I was trying DT2W i figured if you shake the phone first it works about 70% of the time
I might have to use FP sensor.

I think it's not really your bio info, it's just a bunch of points that that specific fingerprint reader can recognise. If that wasn't the case I believe you would be able to register your fp on Google and access the account with any fingerprint reader, but most operate differently.
Plus you can encrypt the phone at startup.

I had the same issue. It was due to an option "double tap power button" to wake up camera app (I have activated it in nougat) that wasn't present in oreo. I donwgraded to Nougat with a custom rom and no more problem, it was a software issue. It was very annoying, I have used Nova launcher and the option double tap to sleep in order to not use the button.
For me it was an issue with Oreo due to a dirty flash upgrade.

Happens sometimes, the physical buttons are pretty bad, they get so squishy after some time. Just disable the double tap for camera, or just return it, it's probably still in warranty and it's acting faulty...

Yes that's the problem because when the gesture is activated before the upgrade it's impossible to desactivate it.
The problem disappears with the downgrade.
For me it wasn't a hardware issue, it was a software issue due to a mismatch between nougat and oreo gesture for activating camera with the power button.
No problem with my power button now and I will never activate this gesture again!!!!

No more problem with the button. It works perfectly now. I've never had a defective button, for me it was a software issue solved by a downgrade.
I'm agree with the sevice center who tried to convice you. It has happened to me exactly the same situation that you describe and it's solved now.
I've the same issue. Discovered it with Oreo January and it is still present in Orea February Update.
Its definitely a hardware issue
The people saying that the problem was fixed after they disabled the gesture fail to understand that the fault in the gesture is the external manifestation of a larger problem which resides in the power button hardware. The only sustainable solution to this issue, involves root and/or custom roms. If you want to know more, reply to this quote.
PS: The service centres also tried to convince me that it is a software issue, and flash nougat over my los15.1.

The power button on this phone is a little bit flimsy. Too many phones have this issue and the only workaround is to disable a camera shortcut as offered earlier.
The service center fixed same problem for me by replacing one part. You can replace it by yourself, if you brave enough: https://aliexpress.com/item/for-Xia...Switch-Flex-Cable-for-Xiaomi/32848157799.html
Disassembly video. It's pretty easy.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXo-7CZzpGM
its a hardware issue, the power button is flimsy, i believe its more because of the button themselves then the button circuits as mentioned in the post above.
I thought it is hardware issue but then i realise that volume buttons are also having something same issue and works multiple times pressed once or somtimes volume decrease but no volume pannel.
So, the only way to fix I need to disassembly the phone? Service Center will not fix it?
Thanks

no , i turned off face unlock, it unlocks itself from launching camera from lockscreen thn closing the camera app, it bypasses all security locks " fingerprint , pins and face unlock"
We shall wait for others to check. I couldn't reproduce the error at all.

So if I'm hearing you right, you're saying that by opening the camera from the lockscreen and then pressing your home button, your phone unlocks? Doesn't do that for me, it prompts me for my PIN or fingerprint when I press the home button. Can't reproduce this either... Might reinstall OOS? I'm at a loss for advice on this one.
I can reproduce this. I use navigation gestures, so opening the camera from the lockscreen and then just close it with the right (or left) swipe gesture to go back and you're in the phone. I don't think it has anything to do with the fingerprint sensor.
Edit: now I can't reproduce it anymore strange.. [emoji848]
I'm not able to reproduce this either. Switched to navigation gestures. Turned off face unlock. Launched camera from lock screen. Swipe from side to go back took me to lock screen with fp prompt only, no keypad for PIN. Tried again, this time swiping from middle to go home. I get fp prompt & keypad for PIN. However, with this screen the camera stays open and viewable through the lockscreen, but phone is still locked.
After a few tries I see my home screen but it's only a flash then it's back to my lock screen. It looks like it may want to but maybe I'm doing it wrong. Either way, this looks important enough to report to OP and see what's what.

Tilted phone so it can't capture my face and tried as you've said - running camera and voice commands from lockscreen and phone is still locked, cannot bypass..
So there are two vartiants.
1) Phone still recognizes your face
2) Enabled smart unlock? so phone knows that you are in home and automatically unlocks device.

Swipe from side to go back took me to lock screen with fp prompt only, no keypad for PIN. Tried again, this time swiping from middle to go home. I get fp prompt & keypad for PIN. However, with this screen the camera stays open and viewable through the lockscreen, but phone is still locked.

Nope, i unlocked my friends mobile @ my home...
You sure you have a pin/fp/pattern set up at all?
I've been trying for 5 minutes with gestures and it always just either asks me for a pin or sends me back to the lock screen.
Seems odd but maybe post it on the OP forums instead of here, won't get them to fix it if they aren't aware of it...
Nope. Unable to reproduce.
