Always on display on oneplus - OnePlus 8 Pro Questions & Answers

CAN I GET "MIUI 12" ----ALWAYS ON DISPLAY---- WATCH FACES IN ONEPLUS DEVICE WITHOUT ROOTING IT THROUGH ANY APK?
BECAUSE ONEPLUS HAS LIMITED OPTIONS FOR ALWAYS ON DISPLAY:crying:

OnePlus 8 Pro does not have an Always On Display and the Ambient Display it does have cannot be customized (other than a few options).

You can check out the tons of AOD apps in the app store that done require root. I've had the most bug free experience with some app called AOD and edge lighting. It seems to work well. Definitely eats up the battery though.

nevermind... without Root...

A lot of reviews complain about uneven performance -- has that changed since Nougat?

Recently lost my Nexus 7 (2013) and am looking for a replacement -- the best candidates seem to be the Asus ZenPad 3S 10 and the Huawei Mediapad M3. I'm leaning towards the ZenPad 3S 10, mostly because all the reviews for the Huawei mention great benchmarks but mediocre real-life performance -- and also that the interface is an unabashed iPad clone (really, no app drawer? What the eff!). But those reviews are from last year, and Nougat has since been released on the Mediapad M3. So has real life performance caught up with the potential of the processor? And is the EMUI 5.0 interface much improved? If I install the Google Now launcher, how close can I get to the vanilla experience? There's just not many accounts of the post-ANdroid 7 experience, so do tell!
Thanks in advance for any comments and advice.
App Drawer was introduced with EMUI 5 and is optional. You can switch between the standard startscreen style like it was before in EMUI 4 and the Drawer via menu setting.
Performance is fine and those problems reported with Android6/EMUI4 resulted IMHO only due to a powersaving profile setting which was activated by default.
In a follow up, did they fix the issue of apps defaulting to phone instead of tablet mode, e.g. Chrome?

No, but you can force tablet mode by using the 'small display setting' or by changing DPI settings.

Seriously, they didn't even fix it in the Nougat update? So you have to set the entire tablet to "small display" just to get apps to function properly? That might be a dealbreaker...

I use a screen resolution of 1200x1920 and a dpi of 320 and all my apps use tablet UI. The lower resolution adds over an hour to battery life and my old eyes can't tell the difference in resolution.

And that's something easily (and intended to be) done in the settings , or do you use adb or root your device?

I use adb to set both the screen resolution and dpi. My mediapad is not rooted. In Nougat you can change dpi setting in developer options. The lower 1920x1200 resolution is suppose to be able to be set in battery options, but it doesn't work in Nougat.

Root on Pixel XL - Why?

Hello fellow Pixel users!
Just wanted to take a minute and start a small discussion with you about stuff that only works with root. Maybe you feel the same.
As an Android user from day 1, I always enjoyed the general "openness" of Android compared to other mobile OSs and used to frequently try out new custom ROMs, play with all the system UI tuner options and obviously got used to having a decent adblocker.
But ever since I got a Pixel XL, I was honestly surprised by the relatively small amount of ROMs and general lack of development on XDA regarding the Pixel phones. At least compared to previous phones I owned, with the exception of the Blackberry Classic maybe...
(Obviously I don't want to discredit the folks that ARE working on these devices. You're awesome and your work is very appreciated!)
Right now, I only use root for AdAway, Nova Launcher (for turning off the screen and locking it with a double tap) and Ex Kernel Manager (even though I never used it or changed any of the settings).
So what I really want to talk about is, what do you use root for? Or why did you unlock your bootloader? Is there something I'm missing?
TL,DR: Did you root your phone or unlock the bootloader? Why?
Yes and yes.
I will always run an unlocked bootloader. It's a security safety net. If my phone bricks, I have the option to flash factory images. I can always return to stock if something goes wrong.
Root, yes, of course. Because Android.

Those are great points! You're absolutely right!
But what about apps or system tweaks? You said "Because Android" but how is your experience different from someone who didn't root?

Root privileged apps- adaway, titanium backup, modded YouTube, modded Spotify, SD Maid, Substratum and a few others.
Also, custom kernel with customized color profile for a more vibrant display.
I also enjoy themeing my own device so having root is necessary for me.
I also need to root, well, BECAUSE ANDROID

U don't need root for substratum on my 8.1 and use Andromeda add on for rootless substratum
I feel like going back to nougat and root for Xposed though...
Thanks for the suggestions!
If you ask me:
Not a fan of TB (restoring often causes problems)
or SD Maid (some cache is important and shouldn't be deleted - except for uninstalled apps),
Substratum is way too buggy for me (at least I can't seem to find a theme without bugs)
and I probably shouldn't ask about those modded apps on here, even though they sound interesting. I guess I'll have to Google that.
After looking through Ex Kernel Manager, I can't seem to find anything that I'd want to use or fiddle with. The phone is fast enough, so no overclock. The colors are fine, so no tuning needed. And all the other stuff looks dangerous...
Where are all the awesome system UI options though? I'd love to have my clock in the center of the status bar and display battery percentage INSTEAD of the icon. I know that those are usually coded into custom ROMs but there are no 8.1 ROMs...
Oh, how I'd love to see an 8.1 DU ROM working flawlessly...
Edit: Why go back to Nougat and why use Xposed? I don't get what the big deal is about Xposed nowadays. I used it a few years ago but only because of one or two add-ons, if I recall that correctly.
I have center clock on 8.1 using a Substratum theme.
Also, you can choose to select battery percentage next to the battery icon in 8.1 battery settings.
Once source code gets released for 8.1, the SystemUI can be deodexed which will allow for 3minit battery mod to work. I believe 3minit requires root.
Reasons are getting thin aren't they. AdAway, TB, and Tasker (HBM and single tap sleep(without device admin permission thus required pin)). TB makes life easier but not a necessity. Different device wouldn't need HBM most likely. So basically it comes down to AdAway which I'm pretty sure I'd go nuts without.
TB, Tasker, lucky patcher, greenify, acr (automatic call recorder), ad away. And generally being able to mess with things.

That's the technical term for it at least.
I'm down to one reason and I found out about it a few months back actually. Without it I probably wouldn't bother.
Assertive display - visibility outdoors in the freaking sun with sunglasses on? Heck yeah! The most annoying part is that it just takes two lines added to the build.prop file. If I could do this without root I sure as hell would.
Adaway
Thanks for all your answers!
This basically proves my point though in my opinion. Having a rooted Android device used to be such an open playground for fun stuff and now it's mostly just about adblockers and minor tweaks apart from a few apps that still take advantage of it like Tasker and TB.
At least the phones nowadays are fast as hell and have insane cameras. I just wish it would be more sci-fi-y if you know what I mean. Phones aren't just gadgets anymore, they're expensive pieces of hardware that seem to improve upon basic things that we could do for years.
Android updates used to have lots of cool new features with every new version number that was released and now they just seem to improve upon what they can already do and sometimes take features away or even lock them to specific phones (looking at the guy who thought it was a great idea to make stuff like "motion pictures" a feature only on Pixel 2 devices even though our device had the feature available for a day).
Guess I'll take this opportunity to spend less time messing around with tons of options and just be thankful for what they can do now. Like playing stupid gambling-like games with ps1-graphics on a device with a quad-core and 4GB of RAM.
Am I the only one who gets turned off by games that have reviewers saying "addictive" and "great time-killer"? This thing could play GTA 4 and tons of people rather spend a hundred bucks on candy crush...
Whatever, it's all good. I guess I just have different expectations.

You are right! I was also using root just for the 3 reasons you specified! Adaway is the biggest reason. There are other solutions, but nothing that reliable. And next biggest is Ex Kernel Manager to set up double tap to wake without lockscreen.
As for the motion photos, you still can get it. You need to download that version of Google Camera APK and disable updates. I am using it and it looks good. But it works only in Google Photos App. So not that useful as well!

My quick reasons for bootloader unlocking and rooting mirror many of the others here:
1) Ability to flash factory images in a recovery situation.
2) Titanium Backup - although I haven't had to actually use this to recover anything other than a specific app or 2 in the past few years.
3) Adaway
4) Ability to modify build.prop to leverage native hotspot/tethering (Verizon GUDP)
I am interested in learning more about Assertive Display and the differences between it and Adaptive Brightness. My understanding is that Assertive Display works separately from Adaptive Brightness and actually adjusts the tone/color/contrast of individual display pixels to optimize viewing in bright sunlight. Theoretically, this allows you to turn down screen brightness to achieve better viewing/contrast in bright conditions. Can you provide the link to directions you used to enable Assertive Display? Also - does it play well with Adaptive Brightness - or do you need to manually tweak screen brightness to account for Assertive Display?
Thanks!

When I first enabled this I left my brightness at the same 50% level with the auto brightness left on. It works really well in conjunction with the normal brightness level settings. Maybe turning the brightness down could yeild better battery results but I was never one to complain by the Pixel XL's battery life.
This video from Android Authority here explains it well. I actually randomly got to the video at around midnight on YouTube a few months back. Phone wasn't rooted so I did root it in the middle of the night and followed this topic from the XDA forums to change the build.prop file. Applied the changes, rebooted phone and... Realized I have no real way to test it. Went to my kitchen's aspirator and switched the lights on, brought the phone under there super close at a very steep angle and I could still see it perfectly fine.
TL;DR - this is a great addition to the already standard brightness levels, works like magic, and hey, you can always revert if you end up not liking it.

You're welcome! One thing I forgot to mention - don't bother with the flashable ZIP. It's more work than editing the build.prop file and it actually doesn't work on 8 and up. 7.1.2 was OK with it but I noticed it wasn't quite right on 8 when I tried to flash it even though it said it flashed with no errors.

Thanks! I actually did disable auto update once I had it and still have the APK. Don't know if it works after a fresh install of 8.1 though. I guess I'll try later. Google's Motion Stills as an alternative just feels weird to me.
I think it's a neat feature though. Sometimes it really helps bring a moment back to life, more than a still picture would. Especially when it's snowing or raining.
That new AR stickers thing is also funny but it needs better content IMO. Two of the packs are basically ads for the StarWars movies and Stranger Things.

Any way we can implement AOD (Always On Display) on OP6T?

So lack of LED is making me kind of delayed in checking notifications, and that feels weird to me. Is there any way we can implement/enable AOD on OP6T? Root/Non-root, either works. I tried the OG mod for 5 and 5t, which works for 6 too, but crashes in 6T for some reason.
Would be into this as well.

Not that I can tell, but if you click the notification when you unlock the device it goes straight to that notification event.
In the post, paphonb-oos-mods-v14.zip, instead of the OPsystemUI.apk, BRUSH-IN test is available, lock screen layout is offset, harmless and elegant.

Not noticably any more than always on display does.
Meaning, it doesn't effect doze. But it is an app always running, so it will use a marginal amount of more power.
On day 2 it uses more battery than the rest of the apps, but I really don't think it's a problem. I'm getting 6+ hours sot. Display at around 90% brightness. I don't do any 3d, intensive games though. Clash of clans, chrome, Google feed, email, text and calls.
I haven't noticed the lack of the led, since I can just touch the screen and take a quick look at the notifications.

Joining the dark side (Galaxy S10+) from iPhone

Hi everyone,
I've been away from XDA for a while, my last android was the LG G6, then I switched to the iPhone X. After seeing the Galaxy S10+ in person I had to order it, so I'm officialy joining the Galaxy gang! it's such an awesome upgrade (love the o infinity display), my phone is arriving in 2-3 weeks, just wanted to check with you guys to see what I have missed out on the Android scene, any really useful apps, recommndations, general tips? Can't wait to be able to play around with my phone again.

That's awesome! we're on a similar journey. How have you been finding the camera on the S10+ ? The wide angle looks like it will have many good uses.
The camera is fine, for my use better than the iPhone X but not as crisp as the Pixel 3XL. I find that shooting in Pro Mode results in better photos. I save some basic presets and it's basically point-and-shoot.
Welcome back! Glad you came to your senses ??

You will love it! So much freedom and flexibility. I loved using iMessage on Macbook Pro, until it died and I didn't want to pay APPLE TAX to get a new one. Web messaging is awesome if you spend your day on the computer. Ability to expand storage via microSD is a huge plus.
As for Samsung S10+, I have AT&T version, so much bloatware. I ended up buying Package Disabler Pro to disable some stuff (use at your own risk). SoftKey Edge is kind of useful, at least for me. I also use UAG case. Used them for years, never disappointed.
I would check out the bixby routines which are really powerful. You can automate certain phone functions (gps/data/wifi/media volume/apps autostarting) depending on different triggers.
Also, check out BxActions which can remap the bixby button to 3 different apps/shortcuts: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jamworks.bxactions&hl=nl
Other apps I like:
- Adguard (paid) which blocks ALL ads in apps and in the browser
- AccuBattery
- Join (to move files, clipboard contents, urls from pc to phone(s)/tablets)
- Nights Keeper (free/paid), you can use this app to set daily schedules for the sound to turn of/on depending on the time.
It can also disable wifi/gps/data if you keep your phone next to your bed
- Nova Launcher (free/paid) -> extremely configurable
- One Hand Operation app from Samsung
- Wallpaper Changer -> point to an album of wallpapers and it will change them when you want
- Swiftkey -> the best keyboard in my opinion if you want to use several languages without having to switch
- Swifi -> Force your phone to switch to a stronger wifi signal in your house (when having multiple AP's)

Oppo Reno 10x Zoom - Indian variant

Just received my Oppo reno 10x zoom(indian variant)
Hit me up if u guys have any question regarding India specific unit.
I just got my RENO 10X Zoom and don't know how to disable all notifications from the lockscreen, I have gone to settings and have already clicked on do not show on lockscreen. It seems that you have to go to each app and disable the lockscreen notifications.
Is there a way or an app that I can install and disable all notification from lock screen at once.

Just switch to a different theme downloaded from theme store.
Do you know how can we change the icon in default launcher?
Also, I could find a way to change the number of apps in a row in App Drawer?
Coming from OnePlus, I strongly feel that Color OS is a disappointment when we compare it to Oxygen OS.

The only way to change icons is to change theme.
There is no way to just change the icons.

Hi, congrats on your new mobile.
About the dual speakers...
1. How is the quality?
2. Are they really dual(like in S10, Xs etc) or fake dual( like in PocoF1, Zenfone 5z etc)?
3. Can you compare their loudness and quality to any other device for reference?
Thanks

Congrats! I have this targeted as a potential contender for my next phone. I have a few questions please,
1. The volume/side button wobbly issue on the Indian model?
2. How good is the rear camera, flagship levels (like S10/Pixel)? Or at least close?
3. From the reviews, the front camera images looked too bright and kinda washed out. with less details. Is it still the same? Any improvement with any update?
4. How bad is Color OS? Any comparisons? (I am used to samsung S7's os and pure android, will Color OS be tolerable? Does it have good features?)

1 . my phone volume key is not wobbly.
2. i neither own a s10 nor pixel(so cant help u with that), pics are comparable to oneplus 7 pro.
3. Front camera is great, no issue in detailing.
4. Color Os is pretty bad. Again i have never owned a Samsung device, though i have owned pure android phones. It is far from Pure android. It is pretty similar to Vivo/Xiaomi/Huawei phone os.

Are you sure that your volume keys and power button doesn't move when you slide your finger on them...I have asked many people and all of them have the same quality.

The keys on my phone are wobbly too but I don't think it'll be a problem.
Btw are you guys using the case that came in the box? I find it very ugly. I use skins in all my phones but can't seem to find one for the reno yet. Also, is everyone still using the pre-applied screen protector? Mine already caught a lot of dust. If someone has installed a different one kindly share the link.

Hello! Congratulations on your purchase. I hope to follow your footsteps but do have a few questions if you dont mind.
1. Do notifications come through well?
2. Do the notifications show on the status bar up top?
3. Off screen clock or always on display, does it show 3rd party apps notification?
4. How is the video quality? I saw a couple videos from this one channel on youtube and his video from Oppo 10x zoom looked very washed out. Do you have the washed out look when taking videos?
I thank you so much in advanced for your help!!
Just one question.. Is the color os that bad of a deal breaker? I was thinking of buying either the 10x zoom or the black shark 2.. Both have pretty much same specs and all and I am a bit leaned towards the oppo one.. But I just want to know how bad colos os actually is.. and what makes it so bad
Thanks

Will applying a different theme have an impact on the notifications shown on lockscreen?
I think it is a bug in colorOS as it doesn't let you disable all lockscreen notifications at once. The option is there but it doesn't work.

If these 2 phones are ur options, they unless until ur a gamer, u should go for oppo reno.
And even if u are a gamer, wait and buy nubia red magic.
Blackshark is just bad.

1. Color os is aggressive, so its known to kill background apps. U will have to select apps u want to allow in background for notifications.
2. if u mean app symbol at top, then it shows.
3 video quality is okayish at best. they need to update it. stabilization is good thought.

1. Notification works just fine if you don't enable 'Super high power efficiency ' ON. For me all app sends notification without doing anything.

Thanks @Dooomlord and @mohitgalaxy3 !!!
Could you guys comment on the always on display or screen off clock please? Do they show notifications icons as well as the 3rd party app notifications?
Thanks again for your answers!
No, they don't show any 3rd party notifications.
By default, you can see only the fingerprint location. You can enable the clock, that's it.

The phone itself is really good but the software just sucks!
