Camera 4.0 (on MIUI 12) vs GCam, daytime and low light - Redmi K20 / Xiaomi Mi 9T Questions & Answers

The xiaomi.eu MIUI 12 ROM comes with Camera 4.0, the latest and much improved Mi camera application. I have tested it against urnyx 1.8 (latest) GCam.
In daylight, I personally see only negligible differences between the two apps (at 12Mpx resolution i.e. using pixel binning on the IMX582 sensor) in terms of image quality, color reproduction, contrast, saturation, etc. GCam seems to consistently have slightly higher contrast but expose slightly darker, compared to Camera 4.0. But the difference in final image quality is very small.
However in low light, there is a clear difference in image quality, thanks to GCam's superior image processing.
Right now I am very impressed with Camera 4.0, imho it is a huge improvement over the previous Camera 3.0. However for low light situations GCam still produces noticeably better results.
In good light, Camera 4.0 in 48MP mode produces very sharp and detailed images, but shadows and dark areas show noticeable noise, as expected.
This is the album for daylight pictures: https://photos.app.goo.gl/i3hhVAaeLSvtoAJF8
And this is the album for low light pictures (taken at dusk with Night Mode): https://photos.app.goo.gl/dEtQ8ccp1qHiRr156
In this album, the first three images are using urnyx GCam 1.8 (HDR+ enabled by default), then two images with Camera 4.0 in 12MP (standard) mode, then two more images with Camera 4.0 in 48MP mode. Imho, unless one pixel peeps carefully, all seven images show good quality, color reproduction and contrast: https://photos.app.goo.gl/fy9e9K32NRyA7RRdA

I'm using ANX based on the new cam and it seems great to me.

I have MIUI 12 but I'm still on V3.... for camera app. Have you update manually?

Yes, I have manually updated to xiaomi.eu MIUI 12 ROM, which includes Camera 4.0.
Also note that Google just released GCam 7.4, so I would expect Urnyx to come out with his mod for 7.4 soon.
I have done some more comparisons and really both GCam and MIUI Camera 4.0 produce comparable results in daylight with all three back lenses: the small differences boils down to color reproduction, contrast and sharpening.
However the front camera in portrait mode produces distinctly different results, as very different processing takes place. It's a matter of personal preference.
For night shots, GCam has far better noise control, but Camera 4.0 still does a decent job in Night Mode.

Another compare with 1.9?

Color OS Camera VS CM Camera(Examples)

CM Camera

Now, you people judge which is the better quality picture of the two.
For me, COLOR OS has natural colors but CM Camera gives a bit more punchier colors. Clarity is great on both.
How can we decide... it's not the SAME photo on a tripod, and for sure you focused a different point in each, so different exposure for sure...
Only clear difference, it's that Cm Camera have more saturated colors than the "natural" coloros camera..
Cm Camera looks better to me...
Also, the resolution has been reduced so the actual image compression can't be compared.
I reckon that you maybe used the modded camera next which increased saturation by default.
In all my comparisons there were no visible differences between the color os and cm camera
when equally setup on auto mode.
Second photo has increased saturation (see leaves) and contrast (see sky). That's the whole difference. Reduce those parameters and you will see no difference
The examples are kind of pointless. As many pointed out - not original size, not the same composition/focus point.
As for CM camera Saturation and contrast is increased, but it can be set accordingly (at least in CMNextMOD).

Low light

At the club, at the bar, or just in your mom's basement, nighttime is when you come out to play. Rate this thread to express how the Moto X4's camera performs when no or low light is present. A higher rating indicates that the camera sensor "sees" lots of light in dim conditions, and that the resulting photos have minimal noise. A higher rating also indicates that when the flash fires, the resulting photo is evenly-lit without any bright spots.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
With flash it's 5 stars. Works pretty good without. Works as good as my S8.
I took some test shots on my phone today, using 3 different camera apps:
- The Stock Moto Camera
- The Stock Google Camera from the Play Store
- Modified Google Camera found Here. MGCB_7.0H_C2API_Full_PXL2_v.1.4_60FPS_noburst_v3
I tested in a large room with the lights off, and sunlight coming in. There are lots of shadows and dark areas, as well as very bright spots. I tested with HDR Off, HDR On, and HDR Auto (if applicable). I also threw in a wide angle, for comparison. (spoiler: Ew).
Some things that surprised me, in no particular order:
- The Stock Moto HDR actually did a decent job at brightening up the dark areas, and giving the shadows a bit of color. Not a ton of extra noise, either. However, the window was still washed out.
- Stock Google Cam didn't offer anything the others didn't, and HDR On/Off didn't seem to do a thing.
- Modified Google Cam definitely helped with the bright spots, as those are the only 2 pictures that you could see out the window, but it also introduced a LOT of noise in the shadows and dark areas. This is a known side effect of HDR in low-light, as I saw the same effect on my 5x when using HDR+ in low light.
I may try a different Modified Gcam, and try to input the settings manually. Hopefully that will result in better pics, as otherwise the Stock Moto camera seems to be our best bet for now.
The stock camera app in normal picture mode is not using good ISO/shutter speed combinations in low light at all. Take some and check the info on your images. It always goes for high ISO and faster shutter speed. It stops on 1/15 A LOT, and seems to adjust ISO from there. Switch to Professional Mode and force a slower shutter speed, lower ISO and now they look much better. HDR on this app is garbage with those auto focus settings too. It works much better with higher quality images with less noise, which the auto focus is incapable of providing in any low light situations.
I did some more tests with the v4.0 AIO modified Gcam, and there wasn't a difference.
I went back to the v1.4, and took some pics at home. These were very low-light, with candles the only light source in the room. I noticed similar trends:
Stock Cam is VERY blochy when you zoom in.
Stock HDR seems to brighten the whole image, but isn't very, you know, dynamic.
Stock Cam is way less noisy/blochy when you zoom in. It preserves much more detail.
Modified Gcam using HDR+ does a MUCH better job handling the candle light in the pic, as the light source isn't overexposed.
I may do some 100% crops and share them tomorrow, but Stranger Things 2 with the wife is more important atm. #sorrynotsorry.

I'm using the manual Google APK here with HDR+ and it's also using very high ISOs, even in pretty good light. I have a lamp behind me, lights on in the room and both apps are using an ISO2400. If I manually set the ISO to 1200 or lower, I can still take a good photo by manually adjusting the shutter speed to 1/15, 1/10, or even 1/8 (anything lower and it's blurred). This HW should be capable of blazing fast auto focus so there is zero reason it's setting the ISOs so high. High ISO = more noise, less detail. Fast auto focus should mean that lowering the ISO in low light will focus better, faster, with less blur from the slower shutter speed. Something ain't right here.
HDR+ will clean up the noise from the high ISO setting some.

That's odd. Is this an issue you've been experiencing on the optimum configs (manual version) or with both modded apps?

Yeah, you're right on this. I did some more test last night, and the most consistent seems to be the modified Gcam HDR+. It preserves more detail while keeping the noise down.
Basically, I feel like these are all just playing around with settings and apks that are meant for other phones. I know the Gcam software can work wonders, and I know the sensor/ISP/DSP/CPU can support more than what the stock Moto Cam is doing, but getting a modded Gcam apk that's meant for out phones would be fantastic. Unfortunately, it'll take someone smarter than me to piece it all together.
Coming from a much older S3, the moto x4 camera is WAY ahead.
I have a small laser projector that only outputs 63 lumens.
The S3 camera could never get a photo on the highest setting.
The x4 camera does it easily.
Apples and Oranges possibly, but the camera is not nearly as "bad" as some
reviews stated.

I had an S7 for work until recently. Hated it. Battery life is worse than X4, too much bloatware, and the fingerprint sensor on it suuuuucked. Rear camera was about the same as X4 but front was inferior. No contest. Get the X4.
Please think twice believing reviewers.
Most of them hated Moto X4's camera coz it has a sluggish and mediocre quality when it comes to depth (portrait mode).
BUT I can assure you that my Moto X4 performs on par with HTC 10 when it comes to ALL lighting conditions.
I took photos side by side and the quality is the same. I even found that the Moto X4 does NOT need to auto trigger HDR in the lowlight pic I took (HTC did auto trigger HDR).
Both HTC 10 and Moto X4 have minimal noise and really looks almost the same given that they are using a different ISP (SD 820 vs SD 630).
I'll try to upload both pics so you can check them as well.
Quick one from today.
The Galaxy S7 will definitely has a better camera quality BUT the X4 also has a pretty good camera so you won't get disappointed.
BUT I'd rather choose Moto X4 since it is a new device while S7 is already almost 2 generations older (S9 is coming).

Camera: OOS vs Paranoid vs sultan vs GCam port

Hi,
I'm opening this thread to discuss the several camera options there are available, so that all are informed by the options available.
There is OOS camera with HD and HDR.
There Paranoid camera which claims to be even better than stock OOS
Sultan camera, which sultanxda put a lot of effort improving the camera
GCam port that has HDR+
Share your experience with each, saying which camera you like best. If possible, detail the best camera that:
- provides the most accurate color
- provides the best motion/action picture
- provides the best low light condition
Share your photos indicating the camera app was used.
I personally use gcam to do most of my shooting. It provides the best dynamic range and image "crispness". I also enjoy how quick it shoots too.
The only time I'll switch from it is to shoot raw and manual on the Stock OOS camera.
When I'm shooting video (1080p 60fps) I usually use the OOS camera just because 60fps in gcam stutters for me on occasion.

I'm very curious about PA. Can you share some pics?
I have used paranoid android 7.3 and I have realised that OOS camera is the best in low lighting as PA camera also does well in good lighting condition.
Paranoid camera app is very good. 60 fps on 1080p works very good. It is snappy too. OOS camera on latest beta not that snappy.

What do you think about low light photos in PA? And motion pictures? Can you share some pics?
I have used the OOS camers on OB17 / OB16 / OB15
I have also used the Google camera app.
In my opinion the OOS camera app is better at low-light shooting plus regular shooting is pretty good. I have not tried the latest ported version of the OP5 OOS camera app but I am curious, so will probably try at some point.
I have not used PA. The Sultanxda camera app has a boatload of options which in my opinion is overkill for a regular user like me.

I hasn't used paranoid ever, can't help in this regard, i myself curious about paranoid
Thats my usage:
Low light: Google cam with HDR+
Daylight in raw: OOS
Daylight jpg: Google cam with HDR+
Video: OOS
Personally I'm using Google Camera for quick shots at college, but at parties or something, I'm shooting RAWs with Snap Camera HDR - because it limits max ISO to 799, where OOS can go up to 3200 (and leave you with very much noise).
For videos I'm using OOS camera - recording 1080p60.
Daytime: Stock OOS Cam
Nighttime: Google Cam HDR+ :good:
Is there a version of the updated PA camera from 7.3.1? for me PA Cam so far gave the best results regarding image detail, since it doesnt use noise reduction, or it can at least be setup so.

Some photos I took solely to note the differences in low light for noise and color reproduction:

the ones from PA cam look nice and are like 10mb bigger than OOS camera ones.

The new PA update should improve the camera app. It is possible to compare with that version? Specially in low light and motion/action shots? I like OOS camera, but in low light and motion/action shots... Could be better. I'm curious about PA in these scenarios

No, as this was all done months ago and I wouldn't be able to set up the exact same scene, and don't wish to re-flash all of the various roms, rename files, etc.

Google camera hdr unlocked iso 9600 on le max 2!?

So I was just casually using Google's HDR camera and I wanted to push this camera to its limits so I take a picture in very low light conditions (btw this is one of the best cameras around right now with the Google Camera because the Le Max 2 was mostly lacking with noise and clarity, which the Google Camera helps to fix, and the Le Max 2 has the 21mp for superior detail, a very nice combination. I have a XZ Premium and even that can't compare to the Le Max 2 pictures with the Google Camera at all). The results at first was an ISO of 7450, then I pushed it even further and found the limit was 9600 . This is surprising to find out when the stock max ISO is 1600, please don't take this information as facts although as I can only identify what ISO the camera is running at by the pictures data.
And if the Google Camera does take pictures with an ISO up to 9600, there might be potential to allow the max ISO to be integrated into different camera apps or even system wide with our lovely developers.
I think the only thing holding the Le Max 2's camera capabilities right now is the exposure time as it is limited to just half a second, if we could unlock this exposure time to be something like 32 seconds (this does seem possible as I have seen it on the redmi note 4, and that takes amazing pictures at night with 32 second exposure) this camera could be amazing. Instead of the high noise at night with low shutter speeds (ISO 9600) we could have a low ISO and high exposure time for crisp and natural low light shots! If you got this far thanks for reading, I really appreciate it and if there may be something that is wrong please correct me as I am not a developer, just a person who loves tech, thanks!
Here is one of the images, and I know the metadata states the picture is taken on a Pixel 2 XL, this is because I used build prop to get Google Lens.
https://photos.app.goo.gl/f5iOUOOsvr9OWVZw2
I have done some testing and I believe it works on the the Gcam 4.4 and 5.1 custom HDR+ apks, although I have found out that the ISO only goes up to 9600 in HDR mode, without it the ISO is just like stock (1600), this could imply that the Google's algorithm uses a high ISO.

Unfortunately we can't, it only works for android 7 (nougat) versions and above as I understood.
That was few months ago maybe something changed, but I doubt it.
Hi I_Raptor_I,
which Rom are you using?
I am using Resurrection Remix on Android 7.1.2 l, but I think this should work on all recent nougat ROMs with camera API 2 enabled, and if you where wondering this is where I download the latest Google Camera HDR apks:
https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/
I am using Arnova's 5.1.018_v1.3 this is a step up from all of the other Google Cameras in terms of photography as the zoom is fixed and zooms in the centre rather than the left which is good, it does have the new portrait mode and motion pictures but they are still very buggy, but the HDR looks much more refined (better quality and low light performance with less iso but more exposure giving more clear images), there is a HDR function for the front but that does not work yet also video does not work, so if you haven't noticed this is a camera app dedicated to mostly HDR pictures. The good thing about this camera is that you can install a MGC camera apk and they don't conflict so you have got a Google camera for video and photography, overall this app is still buggy but contains alot more features and detail, hopefully when this app comes out with its next update the user experience will become much more refined.

Photo quality

Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Xiaomi Mi 10 come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Oh wow - that blurryness showcases either bad skills (no offense) or an issue with exposure - it should ever have a blurryness on daillight with OIS.
Lackluster- quite lackluster - I've seen better pictures with a Mi A2 Lite and GCam (no OIS) and both Mi 9T Stock camera.

Horrible imagines, total lack of sharpness due to large sensor and aperture
The camera is a big shame!!! I'm soooo disappointed by the rear camera. Contrast and so on seems to be ok, but all pictures with the rear camera lack complete sharpness, it's awful. Compared to both the Nexus 5x and the Samsung Galaxy s9, which both only have 12mpx, the quality when zooming is soooo much worse on the mi10. Also photos in low light were better and brighter with the older two phones. Only when turning night mode on they get brighter but still. So the mi10 camera is unusable for me due to the horrible sharpness. Probably that's what comes from the huge aperture and sensor size, you only get a tiny area which is sharp on a photo, while 90% of the image is just blurry ****. Honestly if Xiaomi Cannot fix this issue soon I'll sell that dumb phone, it makes me more than mad on such an expensive phone!!! Also probably the low light imagines are not so good due to the high megapixel. Just very embarassing for Xiaomi to put a camera capable of making photos which are 90% blurry and complete inability to zoom in the picture as it just looks blurry when zooming only a little, each 12 Mox shooter has a much better sharpness when zoomed in the final picture compared to this phone. Even the front camera takes sharper pictures!!!!!!!
Plus there's the issue that photos often get only taken in 0.7mpx. I don't know if that's an issue of xiaomi or of Google photos, usually resizing to 16mpx but sometimes 0.7mpx. But might also be that photos are sometimes only taken in 0.7mpx of this stupid phone. And no the quality when zoomed in the final picture is equally worse in the full 25(27) and even 108mpx photos!!!

Mi 10 dosent have 5x telephoto as Mi 10 pro has, for one more example.
Just check the specsheet.

Chinese companies are always at top of the leaderboard and are known for offering money for reviews. Why offer money for reviews when it's free?
I wouldn't trust the reviews.
