Hi There People,
I hope everyone out there in XDA-Land, is safe and well? On a personal level, one of the benefits of the Covid-19 pandemic is the enforced lockdown allowed me to do some much needed decluttering of a mass of old boxes which had old tech in it. After having a good root around I found my old Nexus 7 2012 WiFi model which I had previously rooted and used successfully for years before I started neglecting it for an iPad mini (I know… I know…).
Having been playing around with it for the past 4 days, thinking what I could do with it. I have decided to use it as a desk hub for my google home setup (a home and 2 mini’s), watch YouTube and Netflix vids, plus get lost in Twitter (via the app) from time. The browser I use on it at the moment is InBrowser and that’s just to open links from Twitter. I have installed Spotify and Deezer to stream music via Bluetooth and with Root access apps Stick Mount and Titanium Backup that's it, I've installed nothing else...
There will be no other google apps required such as Maps, Gmail, Play Books/Music/Games etc.
Given the very limited use can anyone advise of a ROM which will help with general responsiveness as the touch screen is slow as f*%k. Navigating menus just makes the whole experience painful, I did take a look at the ROM list and was thinking one of these below, plus the Parrott mod could be the way to breathe new life into it before I toss it in the bin. Current android version is 5.1.1, Kernel version 3.1.10-gf5d7b8b and Clock Work Mod recovery version is 6.0.4.3 but I did wipe out the root access when in recovery I cleared the cache partition in CWM

My only wish is for a fast tablet which will accept app updates, I'm not seeking an android 10 ROM or anything so fancy . It won’t be moving around or be used on Facebook or Instagram or used for heavy browsing or multitasking.
I know asking which is best or fastest is a subjective question predicated on what it the tablet will be used for but I'm hoping for a few "Hey check this out, it might be what you are looking for" responses.
Any advice is warmly received, thanks in advance.
I just found my Nexus 7 in a drawer and I'm doing the same thing, the current ROM is painfully slow, I'll be watching this thread

@Dr Asqueroso as all of the ROM you have mentioned above are based on the same kernel and device configuration they most likely will provide similar performance. It's up to you to choose whether you would like to go with a more simple (AOSP-based) ROM updated with the latest backported security patches or if you prefer additional features.

To be honest @AndDiSa, when you say additional features or security I think of how I will use the Nexus 7 and I can't think of what additional things I would use it for. In my perfect scenario, this is going to save me buying a "Google Home Hub". As it will only be used for streaming music, watching videos and the odd browse on the interweb. Security would be the choice from these options if pressed for an answer but I'm not sure what I'd be securing? Maybe my Deezer playlist (I'm told I have a horrible taste in music).
I have to admit, I haven't investigated what these additional things are as in my mind, my requirements are very basic. The stock ROM I have is slow to the point that I thought the screen was damaged, so I seek a modified ROM where someone much smarter than me has stripped away the none essential allowing an older device such as mine, to run it without crashes and slow response times.

@Jeffdaddy have you seen any ROM's which might be what we are looking for? I followed this guide and disabled all the stock Google apps and saw a little improvement in speed but the screen in respect to touch responsiveness, is still woeful as one would expect under current circumstances.

Hey guys,
I put parrotmod rom on my nexus and I swear it's back to normal. It took me all day because I read a thread saying converting to f2fs file system through TWRP would speed it up tremendously, well, that ended up giving me a boot screen asking for a password, I converted back to Ext4, flashed parrotmod and that gave me a bluetooth shares error which took a couple of hours to figure out. Now I'm back in business.
Search for Parrotmod, it works great!

@Dr Asqueroso @Jeffdaddy if your requirements are fulfilled with a 5.x ROM optimized with Parrotmod that's the most easiest way to you, if you would like to have a Android 7.x ROM with latest security patches, go with Android 7.x AOSP (btw. it includes and optimizes the Parrotmod modifications).

This looks great, I'm intrigued and want try try this, I noticed there's 4200 posts in that thread, I'm willing to do the work but is the #1 post the one eith complete instructions on how to flash for grouper 2012 nexus 7? I'm definitely not an expert and need detailed instructions .

Now, this is what I'm here for... I did look at your ROM @AndDiSa but wasn't sure if there was something "newer" and "faster" which was being recommended but like @Jeffdaddy says this is a very, very intriguing option. If this can get an 8 year old device behaving like I need it to, I'd be a fool to sniff at it. I'll have a good read of the thread and have a go at installing it. Can you use CWM and the Wugfresh application to install your ROM?
This is great, I flashed to it and it's smooth and snappy however, I don't have the Google play store and I'm unable to add my Google email into it, I thought maybe I didn't flash gapps properly, so I tried it again and got this error, is this the proble? Not having gaps installed?

@Jeffdaddy This is great news... is your screen responding to touch inputs?
Yes, it's running smoothly, I just don't have the Google Apps, I'm trying to read through that other thread to see how I can flash it properly.

@Jeffdaddy Two possible reasons are coming into my minds:
- Do you have installed the latest TWRP-Recovery for Grouper/Tilapia? If not, this may/will cause issues, so please do an update first
- There is also a chance for a corrupt file system, so you should do a file system check, especially on your /data partition but probably also on /system and /cache
Twrp 3.3.1-0
Possibly corrupt file system? How do I do a file system check?
Thanks for your help
Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
Unfortunately I am not able to check whether TWRP offers the possibility to do a file system check from the user interface, but in this thread you can find some additional information, too: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ne...ial-pure-nexus-project-layers-t3243943/page37
I just had the previous version of parrotmod on 5.0 and everything was fine [emoji2379]

One final Question: which Gapps did you try to flash? You need to use pico, all other versions are too big.
I posted whatever one that was recommended in the post for grouper, I'll double check though, thanks

Installation for 1.2-based stock
Two options for installing Flashback
Option 1 (May have instability)
- Copy the zip file to the root of your internal memory.
- Reboot into recovery. Select install from sdcard.
- Wipe data if after first boot you experience instability or non functioning features that work for others. (this still may not fix your issues)
Option 2 (Preferred method and most stable option)
- View detailed instuctions
Installing Flash (you can upgrade to flash from the Market and use Opera for flash in web and go back to this hacked flash anytime to use Flash apps)
- Go to settings then Applications and select unknown sources
- In File Manager HD navigate to /system/data and install AdobeFlashplayer-hacked.apk
- Will need to repeat these steps after a data wipe!

- YouTube App (All videos play fullscreen)
- External SDcard access
- PC Mounting
- Overclocking
- Flash Browsing (using opera)
- Flash Apps
- Web rendering apps

sorry i have been out of the loop for a while on the gtab (ever since i got my thunderbolt) but why cant we get flash to work? i hear it has something to do with flash 10.3 not made for honeycomb by adobe but why not strip the flask.apk from the galaxy tab or xoom?

I think we can get flash to work. It looks to me Honeycomb is just glorified gingerbread. This ROM is run by pershoots gingerbread kernel. I have not started looking at this yet. I have only really dug into this the last couple weeks and first goals were external sd card, gsensor and pc mount on the same ROM.
Thanks for this, now we got a bunch of options on honeycomb , is there any specific difference between this and bos or illuminate?

I have not tried illuminate basically due to time. BOS/Flashback have become quite close. I think the main difference is Flashback has the enhanced shutdown menu
EDIT: opened new thread, wrong place to post sorry!
thanks for your work, and your clear description of it.
what kernel were you using before moving to pershoots latest?
Great Rom. I've been using it for a week now and love it. Very stable and fast. Easy connection to PC. Did I mention it was really fast.
I'm using this ROM from past 3 days, very stable and fast. Youtube (app) works in low res mode, HQ stops video from playback. Overall, nice ROM.
Vevo hd video!!!!
OK so glad to see this in the works still. I've been using it for 2 days now and seems very stable. As far as the youtube app, I'm loving it. For those of you who like HD video i did find that the VEVO app does work.......it does FC a few times just press the option again and it will go through just fine....Thank You guys for all your hard work.
Coming from Vegan 5.1 and Vegan-Gingerbread (VG), this is my first Honeycomb Rom i have bothered trying and its already my favorite. VG is a tad more responsive but i am very impressed with this as an Alpha. Very few negative and "i cant get ______to work" posts here (which is why i decided to try it first).
It works great for the things i use it for. Honeycomb is definately the better ROM for a tablet and i am loving the new interface. Access to the SD card is something i never really got working on vegan and it just works on flashback. I havent yet tried my usb keyboard or bluetooth head phones (frankly dont use those much).
Youtube works fine, i can get most *cough* videos to play using rockplayer lite, and flash actually does work if you are running it from within an app, or at least i was able to play news clips fine using the *cough* fox news app. The issue is the resolution of the Gtab as the image is stretched and distored..im betting aspect ratio of the Gtab is the key issue holding up Flash from working within honeycomb.
Keep up the great work...
I am hoping updates for flashback come quickly so i dont have to bother having to try out the other honeycomb roms (im lazy).

Changelog:
(a4.2)
Added a EXPERIMENTAL FlashPlayer by zebwen. This unfortunately does not fix flash video playback on most sites (YouTube and BBC iPlayer do not work for example, but the small videos on the Yahoo news website do). What this DOES fix, is most other Flash applications, such as web games etc. Using this patched version of Flash, Kongregate Arcade works correctly, as well as other apps such as Zoodles Kid Mode that use flash within the application to play games. See instructions below in issues section on how to install flash.

Hi everyone I am trying to install rom manager pro but at the end of installation it says not installed any help please

Remove every previous/other version of ROM Manager and then try again.
If you are on a custom ROM with the free version of ROM Manager pre-installed, it will be a system app and you will have to remove by using for example titanium backup.

I don't want to diss anyone's development relating to 'Rom Manager', but I read somewhere on another forum (I forget where), that Rom Manager isn't a safe program, and can actually end up bricking your phone if you download custom ROMS with it. Can anyone verify this please?
Cheers, Al
In my experience it works fine with the wildfire, and everything included does what its supposed to do.
I'm not sure if it can hard brick a device as it only shows things relevant to the device you're using which should mostly have been tested before being uploaded but it certainly can cause a soft brick, I know this from experience on my s2, I rebooted into recovery through rom manager only to get stuck at the splash screen and then couldn't reboot into my rom. I didn't panic and wipe everything through Odin but sat down for 5 to think of possible reasons why it could have happened then it dawned on me that on an s2, clockwork mod recovery is built into the custom kernel because we don't have a separate recovery partition so the flashing of a temp cwm from from manager could have wiped the kernel partition. That was my theory and I was correct after flashing the kernel again all was fine.
The wildfire has a recovery partition so cwm is installed permanently on its own partition independent of everything else so this soft brick problem some of us suffer from shouldn't affect you. If anything else goes wrong, say flashing a broken rom I'd say that's partly the roms fault for being broken but mostly your own fault for not researching exactly what it was you're flashing beforehand.
Anyways everything works fine for wildfire so don't worry........

Well, I haven't heard or read such things and I would be really surprised if the pro version of an app developed by Clockworkmod, one of the leaders in Android development, would be unsafe
But to explain how such rumours possibly may come up: flashing a phone's ROM is not the same as installing a new operating system or software on a PC. In theory every flash you do has a final risk to brick your phone. Usually this won't happen too often and many people e.g. here @XDA flash a new ROM daily without having big issues.
I don't know many people who have a pro version of ROM Manager installed. But I guess this has nothing to do with not trusting the software but with the fact that most people who are used to flash new ROMs simply don't need it
I'd say people who are afraid of bricking their phones but can't resist to try out new ROMs more likely would buy this pro version - and in the end they might become too lazy with flashing new ROMs here and there and of course this might also end up with bricking their phone sometimes
Just my 0.02$
Yeh the actual app itself is perfectly fine at doing what its supposed to do, its my phone and others that have the problem which can cause a soft brick through the app. I hadn't used it for months till then as I much prefer just getting all my stuff from here.....

lol - yes I'm definitely a bit jealous from time to time and I've thought a lot to buy myself a more sophisticated phone - and I will definitely do that sooner or later - but for the moment I always start laughing when people around me start unpacking their 5-600 Euro phones while I'm carrying mine in my hip pocket all the time... But in the end I won't be able to resist anymore - I know...
Not sure if it's the version that comes with ParanoidAndroid, but ROM Manager it put a file called .nomedia onto the root of my sdcard which caused media apps to not search for media files >_<
When I disabled it and rebooted I could see photos and music files normally.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Yeh, some people are complaining in our thread about it too. Don't think anyone has narrowed it down to rom manager causing the missing media yet though. It didn't happen on mine but I've gone back to ics as I started getting massive battery drain, 1% every 2 minutes with screen on. I disabled and deleted all the junk turned sync, haptic feedback, media sync etc etc off brightness was low and no apps except the bare minimum but still if my screen was on I could only get 2-2½ hrs screen time before my battery was flat. On ics today I've already had nearly 5 hrs screen time and still have 40% left.

Yeah I haven't been able to figure it out for months...
Your ROM is very similar to the modifications I've made on my own.. In order to accomplish what I really want to do, I think I need to build an AOSP ROM for this. Do you have any idea how to set up an AOSP device tree for this device, or care to lend a hand? I'm starting the research phase now, never really done this before, but I feel too held back by the stock Moto version of Android on here to and feel like I need to start over from scratch with a stock AOSP 2.3.7 base. Not sure if its worthwhile to try for a newer version of Android given the limited memory on this device..
your rom rocks OP, looking forward to updates.
I made running software a bit more complete than the one in the original ROM
I made a little software that can connect to HR and footpod which is a bit more complete than the one coming with the ROM,
take a look at : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1939854.
curently only footpod and HR are supported, but I'am testing a version which includes
for biking :Bike Speed-Cadence sensor .
for running:kinetics (internal accelerometer) so no footpod needed.
a csv usable in Sporttracks is generated
Any update on this rom t2k?
Version 2.0.1 released
Enjoy it!

Yes, the ROM always Force Close when gapps (Play Store, Talk) are installed. I have no time and no skill to fix it. I will try to add it back later. Now, please use adb to install apps.
For the home button on the dock issue, did you mean that the "All Applications" icon is missing on the right side of the launcher? if yes, please long press on home screen to add it back.

Any progress? I'm going to try and flash this ROM once I can figure out how to do it. Root tool works fine but Easy Modder doesn't work for me. Going to try Image Flasher V3.
****** UPDATE: Figured it out with a little trial and error.... Just flashed and will be trying it out..... THANKS!*****
OK, is there something I'm missing. Trying to put this ROM on my 16gb Motoactv. I can use root tool to root the device but the Motoactv Easy Modder doesn't seem to recognize the device. I can't change the buttons or boot into recovery to install this ROM, it just says waiting for device or path not correct (or something like that). I even tried the Motoactv Image Flasher, but it also didn't seem to recognize the Motoactv.
I have a 16GB Motoactv and running Windows 7 64-bit.
All I care about is using it For Runkeeper and connecting it to my phone for notifications. I don't care about the play store, as I find that using it as an android device, though it kinda off cool, is mostly of useless for me.
Can someone point me in the right direction?
I guess there isn't much activity with this ROM anymore. I managed to get it installed but GPS would not get a lock at all. I just flashed the latest ClearDroid ROM then installed the modded Runkeeper apk from your site and now it's working and getting GPS locks.
Thank you so much for the Runkeeper_mod.apk, it's giving me what I wanted from my Motoactv. :good:

Does this ROM have the Motoactv Golf software built in still? Mine is Rooted, but I'm running the general 1.7.10 software....but I could really use to open it up a bit. I bought the watch primarily for Golf, I run a ton and do "Insanity." And it would be great if I could keep my Data Synced with my iPhone instead of the ACTV portal. If I use RunKeeper, I can keep it in both places. Would LOVE to have Notifications from my phone, go to the watch...but I don't think there is a real good way of doing so with an iPhone.

It been a while and I don't recall any Golf software. As I could not get a GPS lock I moved to the ClearDroid Motoactv ROM and installed the Moded RunKeeper APK that the RunKeeperACTV ROM uses. I've gone back to using my phone because I have a hard time getting it to sync with RunKeeper. I did get it to sync the first time I used it after repeated attempts. I kept getting slow connection notices. The last time I tried I don't think I ever got it to sync. I'll try again after updating to the latest ClearDroid ROM as I'm still running an older version.
Try a MotoActv ROM of you choice with the Moded Runkeeper (it's not the new runKeeper version, but works) and see how it works for you. This ROM, RunKeeperACTV, seem to not be active anymore so I would not recommend using it.
You lost me on step 5. How do I do this?
Thanks

Cybertronic Kernel v5 - 4/23/2014
Sync-up Kernel to 3.4.82 (from 3.4.39)
Samsung clean-up and debug removal (They leave tons of factory-only, test-only debug code on)
Config optimization
Cache read-ahead optimized
More free RAM (1760MB Stock, now 1830MB)
Compiled with latest 4.8 Android toolchain (better ARM optimizations for Cortex-A15)
Caveats:
Secure storage is disabled
Only signed Samsung kernels can have this enabled. Keys/Wifi passwords, etc. Are still stored in the secure Android key-chain,
they are just not stored in TrustZone hardware. If this is critical for you, stick with the stock Samsung kernels.
In Progress...:
- ARM HMP (This will allow all 8 cores to be online at once) Porting it in will be a challenge, since it was introduced in the
3.11 kernel branch. I'm hoping the next release from Samsung bumps up the version, so it will be easier. I'll work on it in
in the meantime though.
- Merge-in ADF from Android mainline.
- Merge in anything neat from S5
Install TWRP Recovery first:
http://goo.im/devs/OpenRecovery/picassowifi
Download and install in TWRP Recovery, or use Flashify:
MOD EDIT: Link Removed as per no kernel source as per XDA Rules, and no reply from Author of said kernel.
[RESERVED]
Works well so far. Features list will be nice
Dont want to look at purely benchmarks but seems fluid.

And what kind of kernel?
I think many of us would like more info before we risk bricking our device...
Since you give us NO information at all, We have NO clue what we are installing here,
how do we know what to expect, what the chances are,... ?

You'll never brick your device from a kernel. It doesn't overwrite the bootloader or recovery. So you can always go back to stock, even if the kernel doesn't boot.
Anyhow.... I'm only looking for testers, who have experience. This isn't a public kernel yet, which is why the limited info. So please, calm down.
People have had good results testing so far, so I'll be releasing full details and the public file soon.
Thanks

No worries I'm not building up a rage or something like that
It was meant as a figure of speech since we now nothing
I just think it might attract more testers if we know more about what we are testing.
Is it optimized in general or is it meant for speed(oc'ing) or adds it extra functionalities to the kernel? something like that.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to your official release, and thank you for your time and effort you put into it for us Tab PRO users :good:
Does it mean we can also expect some roms for t520
i must say i have had quite the share of flashing, reflashing, and modifyting my however limited selection of android devices. Never bricked and item yet. I would love to test your kernel and give it my honest opinion.
Since its a testing thing, feel free to PM me deetails
Would love to try this, but how to get TWRP on SM-T520?
Found these recovery images for (I guess) our device, how to install these? Odin? http://goo.im/devs/OpenRecovery/picassowifi
Edit: I can confirm that flashing TWRP from rooted SM-T520 works with Flashify. Flashify finds and downloads correct TWRP2.7.0.1.

You need TWRP first, with which you can make a backup of System to preserve the current kernel.
Running with the kernel now. Seems to be in order, but cannot tell of any advantages that are noticable.
Just flashed it, can't really notice much difference, but will give it some time and report back

2) Wipe data (might work if you're already on Stock)
3) Flash zip file.

XDA
Owncloud
Code:
SHA1
e11a8bef5801c7160a91f4c313b8ba2141df5b07 SimplerStockv1.1.zip
Post-Install
For root, flash SuperSU or su of your choice.
For Play Store, flash openGapps for ARM 5.0.
For Xposed, use arter97's here. Select xposed-v75-sdk21-arm-arter97-exynos_requestConcurrentGC.zip
To remove the S-Finder bar, or 4 way reboot menu, consider installing Wanam Xposed.
Some features such as Task Manager and Ultra Power Saving Mode doesn't work anymore since the required files were removed. This is not a big deal, since most power user will not depend on those, or have better alternatives.
Screenshots
It's just a smaller Stock ROM, so yea...

Have been using this since its release. Nearly 500MB of free RAM on idle compared to the next closest de-bloated ROM. Anticipating gallery nags picassa by replacing it with another gallery app, as well as replacing default home and keyboard with lightest substitutes around (mine are Mini Desktop/ap15 Launcher and Multiling O Keyboard). GApps were replaced by Pico OpenGApps without any problem. Iron kernel also works seamlessly on this. A minor glitch (edited: even on stock kernel) is VOIP on WhatsApp, the other party sounded loud and clear but my voice was muted on the other end. Thanks @iddeen

It could be one of those isolated VOIP bugs. I've checked my mic on regular phone call and it worked fine, but I haven't tried other VOIP services.
I assume you haven't uploaded the 1.1. version, because I didn't see any file on the owncloud link and a similarly dated and sized file on the xda link.

Dear @iddeen , it is perfectly working for me ... but I am looking for a version, where I can set the screen dpi to420
I can do it on the AOSP -schischu- roms .. unfortunately they have issues I do not like: audio, battery, glitches ..
do you know the solutin?
thanks
No solution for total dpi increase. I done it on note 5 and work perfect. But on t70x on 5 and unfortunately android 6 got few app among main fc. So as I know you must work with xposed module app settings which eork perfect but ui is somehow inconsistent and needs bigger work..
@iddeen Rom is very good, best I seen for t705 in twz category...
Now t705 official 6.0.1 is out!!!
I hope you will make same rom. thanks
Also have few remarks for current version, to maybe more improve:
1. using app settings module, I got bigger doi on all needed apps, is there any way now to delete somehow middle line on some apps (settings, sms, file manager...) and get more natural (phone) layout on this bigger dpi. And less important, which app is android installer: I got bigger dpi on many apps, but when installing some new one it is terrible small (of course it is not important as installing is very rare, just curious)
2. debloat is done great- just few ideas:
a) you can delete live wallpappers and additional fonts
b) not sure here- maybe all tests (or some) bluetooth, camera, device...etc can be deleted without problem; and stock browser..
c) you left exchange service and deleted e- mail, suggest to leave better both (or delete both)...
And most important please continue with this rom work on 6.0.1!
Error: THIS PACKAGE IS FOR KLIMTLTE AND THIS IS A KLIMWIFI. What seems to be the problem?
