Greeting XDA land!
I'll try to be short as I can. Owned this US996 V20 unlocked "international" from B&H when this phone was in its hay day. Loved it when you can pull the battery and replaced if need be. Then the battery life gone bad and the screen got it got burned in, just threw it in a drawer Now with this "contact tracing" from Apple and Google in the news, I'm feeling the Snowden bug. Believe this phone has a purpose. Managed to get the bootloader unlocked via LG's site and that is how far I've gone.
I been searching and researching the posts here on the forums for few days and somewhat intimidtrated, the posts are almost 3 years ago and crossed with updated files and methods.
If anyone can lead me, a seasoned novice :cyclops:, where, what and how, (noob friendly if possible ) to get the current way to TWRP, if I should get SuperSU or Magisk. Is Lineage OS the way to go for privacy sake.
The phone currently running Oreo 8.0, US99620f
Thank you

Hello all,
My name is Mike and I'm new to XDA forums. My question may seem a bit random and I'll ask it at the risk of sounding like an idiot. Is my Nexus One rooted?
I purchased my first unlocked N1 on January 5th and lost it on April 25. (Some one is potentially happy somewhere.) I don't typically lose expensive play things but this night involved copious amounts of alcohol.
I digress. Upon receiving my replacement N1 (replaced through ADH/Loss insurance), I noticed a large unlocked padlock icon on the boot screen with the multi-colored X. This icon was not present on my first N1. Additionally, I thought it strange that the following apps were pre-installed on my device: AnySoft Keyboard, DevTools, Spare Parts, Super User Permissions, Terminal Emulator. Also, my track ball glowed different colors depending on the type of notification.
Previously in the About Phone section of Settings, I was able to check for updates but with my new N1 it's not an option. My phone info goes as follows:
Firmware Version: 2.1update1
Kernel Version: 2.6.33-cyanogenmod
Mod Version: CyanogenMod-5.0.4.1-N1
I'm familiar with rooting but never planned on doing it to my own device. I follow tech blogs religiously so when word of Froyo (Android 2.2) OTA updates came out, I figured I should know whether I'd receive it automatically or have to force it on like I did prior to losing my phone with multi-touch.
So after my short story I ask, is my N1 rooted or is the norm (Mod & Kernel Versions)? If it is, I'll start researching ways to take it back to stock form for the OTA update. If it's not, I will feel like more of an idiot.
Yes, it's rooted.
And it's running a custom mod (CyanogenMod).
its rooted
by replacement do u mean u bought it from google or ebay
Wow, It was actually sent to me from Assurion, my insurance provider. I should've mentioned that earlier.
I thought so. Thanks for the quick, speedy responses guys.
So, it looks like I'm now apart of the modding community because I like what I've seen, especially the trackball notifications. Thanks for the warm introduction.
It's not the latest version of CyanogenMod, so if you like it and want to keep using it, I'd recommend updating it. You can download cmupdater in the market.
Are you not slightly miffed that they've clearly sent you a used phone with possible warranty issues?
Actually Rusty, I am.
I have a busy day today but tomorrow will likely be an epic day as far as phone conversations with customer service goes. What bothers me is that I figured something was amiss with the phone at the initial un-boxing but I chalked it up to me forcing 2.1 on my original Nexus and possibly not receiving the full update. It's been two weeks. Hopefully, they don't assume I performed the root.
I find it amusing that the very people that would void my warranty/insurance claim if I performed the rooting myself sent me a rooted phone. However, I'm also happy that because of this "mishap" I'm free to explore the worlds of modding without concern for warranty voids.
Today, I will figure out the best approach for resolving this issue with customer service (T-Mo, Asurion, HTC...whoever). I'll keep you posted.
So I called T-Mo and Asurion and they have no idea what "rooted" meant. They assumed I was mispronouncing refurbished. Whatever the case, I had them notate the account and I recorded their info.
Once again thanks for your help. I've already updated to Froyo as of a few minutes ago. Life is good.
Wanted to post how my last 24 hours went. It was a little crazy and included a soft-bricked htc one (unlocked), one Mac, one Windows and one Ubuntu (the ubuntu finally did it). The purpose of this post is manly to engage in a conversation with you guys, hopefully get one or two good advice and provide the contributors of guides with a little insight in to the mind of a man with very little actual knowledge on these android system tweaks but keen intrest to mess up my own phone ( : hopefully you will enjoy this.. If not scroll down to the bottom to watch one of the most treasured videos of all time.
So I live in Iceland. A nation of 300.000 people.
The morning was beautiful and I had a day off so about 6am GMT I went online to see if HTC had released it version of 5.0 lollipop for my device, the htc one (m7). I have been checking regularly for it as I am somewhat exited to get it and stick it in the face of my mates who all have Galaxy S4 or 5, apart from the occasional iphone.
While searching various terms like android lollipop htc one m7 I always got the same articles on how htc is promising to release the lolli sometime soon. some said nonsense about 2 quarter of the year, februar/mars ish or the 90days from offical google release. Did not seem to get new news on the release date.
Until I brilliantly made google run the search results from newsest to oldest.
Well whola, there is this custom rom called the Maximum HD 50.0 or something that promises me the goods I have been waiting for. Imagine me sitting there, with nothing but free time today, thinking I'm gonna hook this up in a couple of hours : ) : ) : ) well I did somehow manage to upgrade my galaxy s2 to jeally bean all on my own a couple of years ago.
Sooooo I scroll quickly over the requirements, firmware ? ah I'll do it later. S-off, whats this s-off? well you have to admit it does not sound all that important. Unlock? YES I can do that. And this TWRP? I have no clue. But this has 5.0.2, sense 6, EYE and all the goodiegoodies. So lets proceed.
htcdev.com got my phone unlocked check, TWRP turns out to be easy, check, something superuser jibberis, check, S-off compleatly ignored, check. and firmware is only recomennded so I'm thinking I'll do it later and what do you know... Maximus HD 50 is installing through aroma or what it was called. Do this do that a little wipe and a little format. installation 100% glory is coming, THIS IS SPARTA or maximus or leonidas or whatever. Anyways I reboot phone and there is absolutly no rom. whut? It just loads into TWRP again and again and again.
Now i'm getting kinda nervous. this phone cost me 75.000 $isk$ ( I know looks like alot compared to the what 7-900 Dollash in the US)and I have heard of the infamous brick thanks to all the disclaimers: "NO RESPONSIBILITY" "BRICK MAY HAPPEN" "WARRANTY VOIDED". So I start by calling the company that sold me this phone I very very much wanted. now remember I live in Iceland. Reykjavík capital counts about 70.000 people I think. well mabye 130.000 idk.
ME "good morning, bought the htc one from you and tried to install a custom mod. it's stuck in recovery now with no rom or system boot possible. any ideas on how to fix this or the name of a shop that can repair this'"
Shop owner "Well I got nothing, try the only other store that sells it. they have a repairshop"
ME "okey will try" *thinking I have little hope at the repairshop*
Calling repairshop....
ME "get the best android guy there on the phone"
Repairshop "I'm it, whats your problem?"
proceed to explain my problem again
Repairshop "I have no idea what you are talking about"
ME "do you even own an android device?"
Repairshop "Yes but I don't play with it, this is not a toy."
ME " so what do you do there"
Repairshop " get faulty phones with warranty and send them to Poland for repair"
By that time I'm thinking I'm royally out of luck and this is turning out to be waaaaaaaay much loooooooonger than expected no one is intrested in this so I'm ending this quickly now.
5, 6 or 7 hours of googling, installing Android SDK, reading about fastboot, adb, sideline, looking for stock rom (is this impossible to find or am I idiot, I was getting the feeling I was) doing all this on three different OS's and terminals. And I end up finally getting a .zip to open in TWRP and run succsessfully SO now I have a laggy Android 4.4.3 google play edition and no lollipop. All for nothing I liked my kitkat sense 6.0 better. But dam I was happy when that phone booted up. I looked at it like it was my first born. sure a laggy build but now atleast I have the chance of working all this out. BTW thanks to the genius bigxie that provided me with the .zip that worked and to all other geniuses that post gudies for us apes that know nothing (imagine the look on jon snow's face if he was holding a htc one beauty in his hands)
I am leaving very much out of this story. Took me an extra hour on the phone/computer to write this so if someone deletes this thread because im a stupid noob. please replay if you have questions, hints, useful reading material (like a 30page book on this stuff) or, if you want to be most helpful show me the doors to the glory of a good s-off custom rom for my baby.
I haven't been active (posting or lurking) since the S4 days, so I'm a little out of touch. I've been scouring the forum (this one and others) all night, and given the KNOX changes, locked boot-loader, non-removable battery, etc., made to the Galaxy S Series, I'm a little uncertain about the current state of affairs.
Long story short, I dropped my phone today and shattered the display. Phone still works and all, but it's hard to see anything. I, like everyone pretty much I guess, am eligible for a free upgrade. (I already paid for my current [broken] phone, so no issues there. I already called and asked.) April, or longer given the confirmed delay, is a long way off to wait for the S8 (though I probably will), but if I were to get my S7 tonight, here's my question:
If I'm not interested in new ROMs or anything and just want to root my phone so I can have full control (mainly just to delete bloat, but also to edit some various system cfg files... it's okay--I'm a professional ), is that still doable on the the S7 without much hassle?

You can root, but it's more difficult on Bootloader 4 to root and keeo activation. It's all luck of the draw on whether the phone you get will come with a firmware on a earlier firmware. If you're on the APH firmware or below I believe, you can downgrade to APE1 and root pretty easily while keeping activation. I'd personally recommend it only if you want to root and are fairly experienced. Glad the first device I rooted was an S3 and not this.

Yeah, I got my start on the S3, too. S4 was easy, too, thanks to all the hard work to some very proficient devs here, at least until that update Samsung pushed to tighten KNOX and whatnot.
Anyway, about the S7, I've seen a couple of guides here and there about rooting the S7, but more prevalent are the "OMG... I've lost all my services!" or "OMG! My phone deactivated!" follow-up replies, and then those followed up by "hacks" to maybe get things working again. All in all, though, there really isn't much internet chatter (messages, videos, guides, etc.) about rooting the S7 compared to the S3 and S4, hence why I get the feeling it's not really recommended until you are extremely determined.

If you're fairly experienced with android rooting, go ahead and try it. I'd recommend backing up your pit file before you try anything though. Rooting and getting activation back on bootloader 3 is quite easy, but with the new FW's it's slightly more difficult. An XDA user has rooted the latest U firmware from sprint and has everything working from voice to data to all else. I'd recommend PMing @vegoja for help with bootloader 4 rooting, but anything with bootloader 3 rooting I can help you with. Good Luck!
Hello fellow s7 users..... i was wondering if i could possible get some help on this hellish root process that ive been waiting to gain. I have successfully rooted my device via pc, odin and that other stuff. However, my root access failed to keep activation as quick as it was to gain root. I was in the middle of disabling all the unwanted bloat ware and out of no where, my phone kicked itself into a reboot and fell victim to a bootloop. I managed my way out of it and was able to boot all the way through only to find out that a majority of the stock apps would "suddenly stop" itself. Took me a min to sort out that dilemma but after doing so, i realized that i no longer had root access but my device was still rooted...?? Ive done the uninstall, reinstall and clear data steps but still haven't been able to successfully grant superuser permissions. So maybe, i missed a step or misunderstood a thread but i cant seem to work my way around this predicament....... could someone please help me??
I apologize if I'm not on the right thread to ask for help.... worth trying at least.
Thank you
L9Hello guys and thanks for having me in your forums. This is my first post, I'm a big fan but I never registered, just lurked and read posts lol.
I've got a Samsung Galaxy J3 Emerge J327P from Virgin US, it's rooted using the method listed on this forum for it with TWRP and supersu, but I'd like to kill the bloatware, stop mother fuc*ing Google from always running location services stuff(I'll post screen shots) in running services under developer options, increase my battery life and generally soup up my phone a bit with cool stuff. I'm not some bad ass Hax3r elite script kiddy but the pentest apps have always fascinated me and I've got a few installed and they're helping me learn this old dog a few new things. but I'd also like some more that are ofc not gonna be on app store so if you have any of those as suggestions pls hook me up. Also custom Roms, what's the deal? Do they have any for my phone and what can they help, where do I get and how do I install? Now that I'm rooted does anyone have any suggestions what to do next?
I used to work for Motorola and Nextel back in the day as an entry level wireless engineer straight out of the Army, but that was freaking years ago and I'm pretty out of the loop. That being said I'm not a completely moron and I'm pretty handy with hardware and software and I've written a few apps which are one app store.... But I did that with some help and as a project for online classes I take in my dotage to stay busy. I'm catching on pretty quick here though and i think my experiences and schooling and what not could be a good asset to the underground communities if I take the time to learn.... And Also... well mostly...because Ii really like mobiles and wireless **** fascinates me so hook me up. Feed me knowledge and where to look and learn and I'll donate the 200 or so dinosaur brick sized phones bi have in storage to your museum lol.
thanks guys,
Grandpa (or at least I feel that way right now) catguy
Srsly? 49 views yet not a single reply? Not even an insult cuz I wrote this High on pain pills? Wtf guys. Come on here and give a guy w hand. Tbf I figured out most of it on my own, I'm writing my own operating system here you all can have for free, since lineage isn't up. And yes I can do that. I'm old not stupid. I read this independent phone maker was making military grade tough bad ass smart phones, does anyone know they're name at least? Deleted my history. OR can help me kill some bloatware, or should I say tell me what is okay so I don't have to go through the steps doing it while I tinker out this code?
Sorry I can't be of help
Sorry that I have nothing to add on the ROM department, as I'm far less knowledge than yourself and about 98% of the individuals on here (the other 2%, smh. Just wow). The reason for me taking the time to reply is because A) I feel on the trying to teach an old dog new tricks; it takes me 20 minutes looking up what the meaning is of the lingo, then 40 minutes on how to implement it. Ironically I also worked for Sprint/Nextel but mine was the far less glamorous call center job. And totally random, & tbh with myself) none of my business, but I couldn't help but notice your mention about meds and regaurdless if it was one time thing, recent injury, old injury/condition, just whatever the situation look into (if your not familiar with it) mitragyna speciosa (kratom) its all natuarl plant, 100% legal (I think its 2 states miscategorized as a synthetic), its related to the coffee plant, and although its not perfect and not for everyone, its better than any pharmaceutical. There are quite a bit of Vets that are big advocates of this botanical. And sorry it's off topic (like 100%) but it changed my life, so I know it can for others too.

Don't take it personally, for the most part people here don't reply unless they have something constructive to add or say, it keeps the boards from getting flooded.
Since you're rooted I was going to suggest looking into porting, if you can get Lineage 14 running on your device (I have no idea what specs your model has off the top of my head to know what's possible for it) then it would give you a good jumpstart on porting 15 when that's released you could set up a race with the other J3 Devs and see who wins haha.
I seem to remember reading something about that phone too, iirc the article I read had it with a special case with Kevlar weave (which sounds badass on its own), I'll see if I can find any info on it again.
A lot of bloat can be eliminated by creating a nandroid backup (or TWRP if you have it) and taking it out that way, failing that titanium backup will let you get rid of a lot of bloat.
I just picked up a j327p for Sprint yesterday. I immediately wanted to flash Lineage onto it, but everything I'm seeing suggests that's not possible. (I wasn't able to do research before the purchase; it was an emergency replacement).
I found your post because I came here looking for the same information. I haven't flashed recovery onto my device yet, so I may try to return it to the store instead. It sounds like you got TWRP on there okay. Are you just stuck with the OS?
EDIT: there is this thread, which everyone in the universe was probably aware of but me, it just took me a bit to locate it: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...nt/wip-custom-rom-j3-emerge-sm-j327p-t3634206
I built a rom for Sprint / Virgin / Boost check it out
How do you flash a zip from twrp? I know how with Odin but I downloaded one of the custom roms from cad tried to flash without help but the only thing that seemed to change was my xposed wasn't installed anymore I must have done something wrong can someone show me what roms are best and give me instructions for flashing the right way
Hello All,
This is my first 1+ phone in general, and first phone in a while I might need to root/bootloader unlock. Just wondering how everyone has been liking this phone, and the difficulty (at least just rooting) for unlocking/rooting this phone under T-Mobile. I might be done with flashing ROMs, but at least root would be nice again. After the S5 on Verizon I've basically been done with this, but did root my LG G5/v10/20 back when they came out. Coming from the LG G6 that I've been trying to wait until May to upgrade, but this ridiculous moisture sensor issue has forced me to upgrade since I can't even charge my phone.
Thanks in advance!
Welcome back friend and follow the guides to root. I have the international version and the experience has been pleasurable so far. People are willing to help and what not
