[Q] Noob gifted phone. Can't upgrade from 4.3?

Hey there xda.
I received this Galaxy S4 from a friend of mine who I no longer have contact with. For a while, I've tried upgrading from 4.3 to 4.4 using the regular in-phone option with no luck. It goes through the download and installation and optimization of apps but it still stays at 4.3. My friend had told me he had rooted and messed with the software on the phone but that it should be fine. I just can't seem to get the automatic update to work.
When I look in the 'About Phone' option, I see the following:

Hardware Version: L720.08
Model Number: SPH-L720
Android Version: 4.3
Baseband Version: :720VPUEMJA
Kernal Version: 3.4.0-1927016

How do I go about manually updating to the most recent version of Android? I'm a complete noob with this and have never done it before. Can anyone point me to things I need to download and the steps I need to follow to upgrade?

Usually the bloatware...other than that they are the same.

Navigation bar

Hi, I bought my s8 on Saturday and as soon as I turned it on I threw the option to update, my friend also bought it the same day and also updated.
After updating my friend had the option to show and hide navigation bar and I did not.
I wonder what the error would be and how I could fix it.

BMW Android Headunit Update?

Hi all,
I've got a Android headunit for my BMW E92 and I was spooling through the settings and spotted the unit was last updated early 2018 and is running android 4.4.4. I've got a few questions regarding the unit:
1) Is there anyway I can update it to a higher android version? (From 4.4.4)
2) Can I update the boot logo to something custom? It has a few options, but it doesn't allow you to select a custom option. Is there a folder location for these?
