Users on Reddit breaking S20 Ultra glass without dropping it - Samsung Galaxy S20 / S20+ / S20 Ultra Guides, News

Not sure how this is even possible, how does one break the glass on a S20 Ultra without dropping it???
I've already had a few drops of mine onto ceramic tiles and no issues.. The Simply Carbon Fibre S20 ultra case I've got has protected my S20 ultra just perfectly.... :good::good:

They're lying. If you prod 90% of these people they admit they put their phones in their pocket with keys or something like that, or are completely unwilling to answer any followup questions. People are doing this to their phones by misusing them. The camera glass is not flawed.
Reddit just loves to circlejerk about how "android bad abble gud xd"

People on reddit are basically morons...

I'm seeing a lot of complaints about this on the Samsung forums, there's several cases of glass cracking when taking phone off wireless charger. I think heat might have something to do with it in those cases.

[Q] Waterproof Nano-Coating - Which is best?

I was once interested in the Galaxy S4 Active, but four important things have kept me away from it altogether:
I just got the S4 in April, so I'd need to sell it to buy a new Active (and there would be a price difference of course).
The S4A is only waterproof to 3ft or so (some reports of less than that). And for only 30min at that.
Probably most importantly: I hear there's no liquid coverage in the warranty still, even though it's designed to be submerged!
8MP camera? What gives? One of the biggest bragging rights of the S4 is the 13MP camera.
That being said, I want to waterproof my S4, so that I can completely submerge it. I mean, like bottom-of-the-14ft-pool submerge, while still taking pictures, even. I'd consider hacking the S4A camera app onto the S4 just for the Aqua mode it has (and maybe try to hack in the 13MP capability too?).
Key thing, though: I don't normally use a case on my phone. I like the slimness of my naked phone.
So, I've seen different nano-coatings (liquipel for example - or even the NeverWet spray). Most of them coat the outside of the phone, and don't offer submersion as an option. They're designed for "accidental spills only". Here's what I want from a nano-coating:
Submersible to say, 15ft. Maybe 10ft would be acceptable.
No time limit.
I'm willing to completely disassemble my phone to coat the motherboard, inside and out, if needed.
Some form of guarantee against water damage would be nice. I swear that I saw one company that offered this, but I can't seem to find it now.
I'm curious how this stuff would work with heat dissipation on the motherboard components. Also, how well would the contacts work after? Examples would be the connections to the motherboard (for the screen, or daughterboard, or cameras...), or even the battery connection? Does nanocoating interfere with these?
Anywho, the point of this thread is to ask the S4 community about different brands of nano-coating/water-proofing options. It might be impossible to get exactly what I want, but I'd be curious to see how close I could get.
Thanks for your time.
I highly doubt you will find a nano coating that can meet your needs.
Regarding the neverwet spray, I recently read a review on it and it only lasted roughly 30 minutes in water before the coating began to deteriorate plus it makes the device sticky.
Your best bet would probably be a case even though you specifically asked for a nano coating. LifeProof juat recently released an S3 case and its safe too assume an S4 case is in the works aswell.

Yeah, that's what I'm gathering. Thank you for the feedback. I did find that it was Liquipel that offers the guarantee against water damage, but only with accidental exposure only (explicitly prohibits intentional submersion). I happen to be travelling over in the L.A. area soon (near their HQ), so I've asked them two questions this weekend, without response:
If I were to bring in my device to have it treated, would they allow me to physically disassemble the device and let them place the individual components into the chamber?
If I were to invest in a nice waterproof case, and for some reason the case failed to protect the device, would the Liquipel guarantee protect the device at this point?
I'm thinking that a lot of these nano-coatings will give-out after 30 minutes of continuous water exposure. That's why I'm thinking of a really good waterproof case for intentional diving with the phone, and then the liquipel for all the accidental stuff (as intended). It'd be nice to go to a theme park and ride the water-rides without risking anything.
Eventually when LifeProof releases their Galaxy S4 case which shouldn't be that bulky in comparison too other waterproof cases you could buy the case and apply the Liquipel coating. This way you have a 2 step barrier for any water damage, if the case gives way too water, the liquipel should protect it and any damage should be covered by their warranty.

I called Liquipel today, because apparently the monkeys behind their keyboards don't respond to emails.
- They will allow me to disassemble the device, have it coated by them, and then I would have to re-assemble it myself. No problem.
- They recently had another customer with a LifeProof case file a claim. The LifeProof case leaked on his iPhone (dunno which model) without the customer knowing, and the water sat for a long time. The corrosion/etc. that resulted was too great, and Liquipel would not cover the device. The customer had to buy a new device, which Liquipel subsequently treated the new device for free.
But yeah, if LifeProof created a case for S3, there's little doubt they would not create one for the S4. The only fallback would be if the S3 case didn't sell well - at which point they might re-think creating a case for the S4.

How does the body hold?

Hi,
So those of you who actually have experience with the X Compact, how does the body hold of the X compact? I have seen many Sonys (and currently own a Z5) and the bodies hold pretty lousy. All (and I mean it) Sony phones my colleagues and friends (and me) have had the rear glass cracked. After a couple of drops my Z5 lost the waterproof ability. I hear things are a bit better on the Z5C with the plastic body. I have outstanding experience with the plastic Lumia phones (735, 1520, 1320) and disastrous experience with aluminum Lumias (830, 930).
So I hope the plastic body of the X compact can be a revelation in terms of the reliability. But then there are rumors that it scratches easily.
Please comment if you have any experience with this specific phone. Thank you!

I got the phone today and I must say although the design is awesome and feels excellent in hand, the back starts to get scratches the moment you take of the plastic cover.
I had a HTC desire 820 before and it was just like this one so you might wanna use a back protector or cover for your phone from the begining.
I'm on the same boat as well. As an owner of an over-three-year-old Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini, I'd like a compact with better performance and camera. However, having read SOOOO many account on the Z-series compacts developing faults (the most notorious one being obviously the self-cracking screen/back), it's tough to want to take the plunge for a premium priced smart phone, especially since I've never had a smart phone break on me and since I tend to switch every 3-4 years which is a long time.
To make matters worse, there seems to be high-quality cases available for the XC. Well, Sony does make two flip cover cases but those things get in the way. All we get for back cases are pretty much 5-10 dollar TPU gel cases or low quality hard cases, none of which aren't probably good for accidental drops. I e-mailed Case-Mate (my go-to case manufacturer) if they are making a Tough case for XC as they have done for Z5C and many of the current X-serie phones. Unfortunately they had no plans for the XC for some reason.
Based on what I've read, most people are going for those transparent TPU gel cases (which according to reviews can look better in real-life as they do look super cheap in the pictures). However, they don't exactly ooze of shock protection although they are obviously better than nothing. Moreover, I wonder how long they'll last if you're like me and keep your phone in your jeans' pocket most of the time when you're on-the-go.

Definitely get a case. The back is annoyingly scratch-prone. Or apply a full-body skin (I'm trying Skinomi's and it's worked out well so far).

Want to buy have hesitations because of cracking , help !

I could swear i picked the right forum (Questions & Answers) , seems i didn't , someone delete this thread . i will repost !
Help me out here bro's .. for a whole week i have watched hundreds of reviews and drop tests etc , i like the S7 Edge but i am terrified of that glass screen on the front side cracking by itself without drops acording to many people on the web, i normally use cases on all my phones but with this model i'm afraid that its edge will be easy to crack if dropped in a certain position with a case , it is not a cheap phone and if i pay this much i want to be sure that is a bit tough and won't have to be in service centers a hundred times , what are your experiences with it , i am stressing between S7 Edge and the HTC 10 full metal body and its resistance Thanks.
I had same hesitations as you have even with a spigen tough armor case. I have broken a S6 edge plus in past and vowed not to buy a edge phone. Stayed long time with My Note4, the longest phone i have ever kept for 2 years.
S7 Edge is fragile. and if u are not careful yes you will break the screen if u have fumbling hands like me. I have bought a Otterbox Defender case for my s7 edge. it looks bigger, feels heavy, touch might not be as smooth as one without a case
The best reason for otterbox defender was built in screen protector, its not glass mind you but work fine. I dropped my phone from around 4ft height but not even a single scratch on the case or phone...
That is the only case i use most of the time , although i have 4 more like Spigen Tough Armor, and the Original flip cover, but im not a fan of flipcovers, not my taste. I also have Samsung Accidental Warranty replacment for screen 1 time if i break it
The warranty plus the otterbox for me was the only combo that makes me feel safe.
Many would disagree and say they think its best not to use screen protector and have the best of edge screen. But a little compromise makes me feel comfortable to throw around my phone on table , in car , on bed etc without worrying that i might break it.
So in the end other cases can give u Semi type protection. but be careful as if it falls on floor u will surely damage the phone... I have no regrets . amazing phone , killer camera and screen on time. i get around 6 to 7 hours screen on time mostly
Dropped my phone multiple times from different heights. Thank God UAG saves my phone.

So far not even a scratch on my s7 edge. Even after like 2-3 drops maybe. It is a really durable phone. Everything is nice and solid. Best phone I had so far. Even Note 4 had a unbreakable glass, as well as Galaxy S6. But S7 Edge has the best glass out of them all.
i have been using a Spigen Crystal Shell on my S7 edge since day 1. Brilliant protection. Haven't dropped the phone thankfully yet but the crystal shell has these air cushion bumps that are pronounced on all 4 corners.
i have mine in a vrsdesign case, got it from amazon for under £10, and with my job im constantly climbing in /out on top and under machines, and mines hasnt broke i think theyre more durable than people think, just look after it properly, too many people are careless with devices these days

It wasn't deleted. it was moved to the Q&A forum, where it should have been posted
http://forum.xda-developers.com/s7-edge/help/want-to-buy-hesitations-cracking-help-t3522197
I'll close it, and leave this one open. But I will also move this one to Q&A.
As for the screen glass, it doesn't crack on it's own. It never has, and never will.
If you worry about that, you may as well not buy any phone in case it smashes.
I've never had a screen protector or case on any of my flagship smartphones, for the last 10 years or so, and never had a smashed screen.
I've even dropped my S7E a few times onto concrete, and barely left a mark.
Mine broke on its own. but don't worry, its only $260 to replace it by samsuck and it will no longer be water resistant.
On it's own?
Sorry but I just can't see how that would ever happen with Gorilla Glass 4.
My S7 Edge Lens cover broke on its own. And the display cracked on the edge recently. Still working perfectly as the shattered pieces are held together by the ScreenGuard - Best ScreenGuard by GadgetzShield.
They don't break in their own unless you put pressure on the screens or your phone is faulty and overheating. Does mine a few times with a Spigen case and it's all good. Maybe there are imperfections in the glass as edge screens are not perfectly flat and hard to make. Each one is unique.

Yes. The Display edge cracked on fall. The camera lens cover is fragile.
It is doubtful that you need another person telling you that the phone is worthwhile, but I'm going to anyway
As mentioned previously, Gorilla Glass 4 is very durable. NO phone is meant to be dropped without consequence, save for maybe the "Active" series. That said, I just received my Spigen Neo Hybrid Crystal case, and I threw on a Skinomi tech skin (for cases, not full coverage).
I too watched a ton of videos, looked at a lot of case reviews, etc. Many of which showed shattered backs, cracks, etc. I'm extremely careful with my devices because I believe in only buying them once. I'm not careless enough to drop my phone from 20 feet, or something ridiculous like that. If you are a normal person, who takes care of their electronics, the demise of this phone need not be feared.
I have a s7 edge and my only concern is that at some point Samsung will decide that it will not update the software any more or bring software features which will come to the newer devices. The hardware is great. The update policy is bad and it makes you feel like you have an old device even if the hardware is perfectly fine.

[IMAGE] If the rear glass is cracked, the phone still having water-resistant feature?

A friend ran with my cell phone and It fell on the runway.
It has a crack in the back and I want to swim with the phone.
According to the pictures I attached, can I still put it in the water?

I seriously appreciate your answers, I am 14 years old and I had to pay more than half of that cell phone with all my savings
Thank you
First off, swimming with the phone, cracks or not, is a horribly bad idea.
The phones water resistant features are for accidental drops in water, not for intentional and prolonged usage underwater.
Exposure to water will actually make the speaker almost unusable, and the microphone will be almost impossible for other people to hear you.
They make specific, specialty cases designed to take a phone underwater, which might be worth looking into.
Any cracks in the case, screen, chassis, anywhere can and will compromise the water resistant feature.
If you take that phone underwater, repeatedly, expect to be paying a lot more than half of your savings. You're going to end up buying a new phone again. And again, and again if you keep swimming with it.

And I know I repeatedly said the same thing over and over.
I'm trying to get the point across that it's a bad idea. Water and electronics don't play well with each other.
And water always wins.
I'm going to throw this out there, because if you're anything like my teenage kids, you're probably going to try to take it, anyways.
If you absolutely have to take the phone underwater (which I can't think of too many reasons why you would), then put the phone in a freezer zip lock bag.
They are thicker, and the zip lock is stronger. Get as much air out of the bag before sealing it. A good trick is to put a straw at one of the corners. Zip lock as much as you can, then use the straw to suck the air out.
Pull the straw out at the same time you finish closing it.

Bring in to service center and ask them if they can do do a waterproofing test. Samsung SC will do that whenever they do repairs to confirm IP68 water resistant level. How not sure but according to Sony's repair process they use air pressure to check for leakages.
The Xperias do have the pressure test built in so you would be able to check by your own. I don't think there's something like that for the S7 available and without knowing the way of assembling in detail I guess it's impossible to tell if the device is still waterproof or not. (It doesn't look so serious for me, though)

WARNING!!! Samsung Galaxy S9+/S9 Clear View case scratches screens.

Good day to all S9+ (and S9 for that matter) owners.
3 years ago i posted on this forum about how the Samsung S6 Clear view case causes the screen to scratch very easily. Link: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...s/samsung-view-case-scratched-screen-t3107467
I have now purchased a Samsung S9+ with the latest Clear View case and guess what? Same thing. After 1 day of fitting it, my screen is scratched. Luckily, based on my previous experience with this type of case, i was more aware of potential damage to the screen and kept on monitoring it until the first scratch and tiny hole appeared on my screen. I really had high hopes that Samsung learned from their mistake and manufactured a better case with different materials, which by the looks of it, it does look like it was made using different materials, however, Samsung failed to really put these cases through normal usage tests before releasing them to the public.
Anyone else noticed this?
Using it for last couple of months and find no issue whtsoever .. No scratches or anything ..
All it takes is one piece of something abrasive to get stuck between the cover and the screen to scratch it.. I'd use a screen protector with a case like that.
My friend put one on his S8+, screen is scratched too, I'd guess something got in there while it was in his pocket.
My friend has the same issue with his clear view case... He's now using a 3rd party case instead.

That's good to know!
Thanks for the info. Samsung cases are just to pricey.
I bought my note9 together with Samsung clear view case and screen protector. Screen protector applied right after phone unboxing. So, even a clear view case is used, it is good to put as well a screen ptotector.
My first Samsung was Galaxy 7. I got a very good in-store rebate of $250, for a 2 yr old G3! I always keep my stuff for the most part, pristine. I take pride in that. Got a bluetooth speaker, screen protector, and then a cheaper incipio case. I have to say that the incipio is a very durable brand. I have an s9 plus now and still bought one of those. I have dropped my phone a few times where i thought it was going to be cracked, but it came through every time. It is open faced, but i used cellhelmet w/gorilla glass 6, and not one scratch. I also purchased a belt case. Really decent case as well. I could never see getting those bulky cases. If you don't know about the incipio, it comes in 2 pieces. A rubber inner shell, and a rubber coated ceramic outer shell. Sounds like it would be fragile? When snugs around the phone it reinforces the outer. ??
