Phoenix automotive Android 4.4 launcher and apps - Android Head-Units

Hi all, if anyone has a Phoenix automotive 12 inch head unit, running 4.4, or so, I'm looking to extract some vehicle specific graphics out of the launcher home screen, and to that end, the stock apps for that unit, and resource files, would be very much appreciated, or at least, a link to a backup of said files... I want to see what graphics I can possibly use in a few skins for the Torque pro app, and vehicle pictures and things like that, might be what I'm looking for... Also, if I could get it working on a phone, I could dive in and see what makes it tick, and maybe find other uses for those graphics as well... I don't have that head unit, and I'm not sure of the legalities of sharing those files, but if I could get a zip file or something, with those files in it, without having to download an OEM image and figure out how to extract the files from there, would be great...

New App Idea

I was wondering if anyone knew of or could assist in writing an application that makes sense to me:
I spend half my life updating software on my Kaiser (and apps like apptodate, etc are very helpful), and I am constantly rearranging the icons after an update of a program. Icons are placed in the Start Menu generally in the main Start Menu/Programs Folder or in the Games folder, but virtually never anyplace else.
I would love a program that would allow you to select a cab for installation, search for an existing link to that program and move (or overwrite as necessary) the new .lnk file that the program update installs into the identical location of the old .lnk file. If it were a brand new installation, perhaps it could ask where you wanted the icons/links created so they wouldn't have to be moved later.
Does this exist and/or does this sound useful to others? It sounds like a lot of the functionality that is in Sashimi (which I also use and love), but not quite.
Thanks
RK
BTW I spend the other half my life updating the ROM

Windows CE 6.0 shell question

Hopefully this is the appropriate place. This may be a dead end but I thought I'd ask. EDIT: This probably belongs in the General section but I don't see a delete or move option.
I have a generic Chinese headunit in my car running Windows CE 6.0 with a very limited shell running on it. Is there a way to force it to close out of this or load another on the unit? My input options would be Micro-SD or USB drive via the USB host adapter. I can't even load programs other than whats built in except for the GPS software.

No offence jwoegerbauer, but I tried ceFFM on WinCe emulator and after correcting couple of Mortscript unclosed quote marks, I still got different Mortscript errors which I wasn't able to correct in a simple way. So I didn't dare to install it on my WinCE 6.0 Chinese GPS tablet at all. I also tried MioPocket Mini from here, it installed without problems on emulator. So I tried it also with the unit itself, but as it is still quite bloated and slow with heavy Mortscripts and also the interface probably needs some better graphics support, it's not very fluid. I ditched it and I am still using the original interface, which is fluid and through which after a very simple "hack" of replacing some exe files and redirecting them through Mortscripts to run my own programs from SD, I can basically start any program.
I suggest You first point to Your navigation path configurator (every Chinese unit should have one) to "desktop.exe" (You'll find it in gpspassion.com somewhere) and after running it You should be able to access the WinCE original interface and take it from there. Also before anything else, try to find out if it is possible to hard reset the device in case You get in trouble (probably not) and if it has a persistent registry (probably does), in which case You'll have to be VERY careful about modifying the registry. For example, my device has a custom shell, so if I would try to replace it with original shell from HKLM\init, it would brick my device as I have read others with the same device have "successfully" accomplished. Most safe would be to continue to use the original interface, maybe if You need some additional programs You could launch the "desktop.exe" any time from the navi shortcut and run the stuff from desktop.
Good luck.

Actually my goal is to play (downloaded) video in mkv format so I don't have to convert it in order to be recognized by my Head Unit. But in the end, my Head Unit can play mkv file, view office docs, play game and has a customizable menu.
Here what I do :
I'm using Chinese Head Unit which the GPS files are inside an SD card. Just try to remove your SD card safely and copy to a folder (let's say SDbackup) in your PC/laptop. Inside this folder, you will find *.ini file which specify the path to your GPS problem. Open this file. Mine (maplaunch.ini) is look like this :
[igo]
path= mobilenavigator\mobilenavigator.exe;
iconpath= mobilenavigator\igo8.ico;
showname= igo8;
Then search for a PORTABLE (no-need-to-install) shell menu or application launcher, I use GPS Menu. Copy that portable launcher/shell to your SDbackup folder while keeping the folder stucture the same. I have no info about this chine head unit, Therefore I use portable launcher so I dont have to install and taking chance to brick it.
Then edit the executable path in *.ini file above to point at the portable launcher *.exe. (Mine become path= my_gps_menu\gps_menu.exe. I cand do this since the wince only lock the IGO map folder. If it's also lock the path above , then copy the portable launcher files into the folder path (ie mobilenavigator) and rename the gps_menu.exe to mobilenavigator.exe.
Copy the SDbackup folder to a new SD card. Keep your original GPS's SD card as a backup.
Try this new SD card on your head unit. If it's boot up perfectly, then you can edit this launcher to display your existing GPS apps and other apps. "GPS menu" has include some apps like tcpmp video player -which can play mkv & subtitles, music player, document viewer, game etc.(I guess the last two just for showoff ). You can also 'unlock' (accessing the wince desktop) the Head Unit,
Good Luck! and Sorry for my english.
GPS menu (by PEZ and/or SHANEA)
GPS Menu you introduced here isn't a shell in its original sense, it's an application launcher . as you correctly stated.

Yes, "GPS Menu" is an application launcher.
If this thread starter simply wants to load another program in the Car's head Unit more importantly while Driving, probably all he needs are another GPS, media player and bluetooth apps - with custom GUI/large buttons and perhaps voice (to tell him that he did push the right button).
Maybe he thinks he needs another shell for this. While certainly a shell can do it, a launcher will do it too, That's why I wrote "shell menu/apps launcher".

I was using Pez GPS Menu. You can google it or try googling "Pez GPS Menu filecrop" (w/o quotes).
I said "was" because for months I've been using iphonetoday launcher taken from here http://code.google.com/p/iphonetoday/downloads/list.
Choose the PND/Pocket Navigation Device version.
However, this only a launcher, so if you want to play .mkv, .mp3 etc you need portable wince apps which bundled in GPS Menu.
Other option, you can use Wolf NCU : http://wolfncu.ru/ for launcher
Or mix it together, like I did. I use iphone today launcher which has icon for Wolf NCU
FYI:
Especially for use on devices with little RAM I recently have published MioPocket Mini 4.0 FV. It's made up on iPhoneToday engine.
Im looking at buying one of thesefor my wife car, do they work OK out of the box,? Is it easy to put on the maps for my country uk?
Thanks Joe

[PX5] - OEM app skins and mods repository

I'm hoping to start a collection of different skins and mods that people have made for the stock applications on Android PX5 units.
Apps:
Radio
Bluetooth Audio (A2DP)
Music
Bluetooth phone (Caller)
Lots of people are using custom ROMs or other work arounds that let them change default apps or install modded versions over the top.
There are a lot of decent screenshots of really nice looking radio versions around, but download links no longer work.
Hopefully we can get some people sharing them or developing new ones to people's tastes and car styles.

You need to specify for which hardware platform: STT, FYT or MTCD/E.
Mods for one platform do not work on another platform and can even cause serious issues.

Thanks for that advice.
I figured people could specify which type they have when they shared them.
I'm after MTCD/E for myself.

Below is a link to the Navimods website where you can donate 10EUR and get access to some really high quality stock replacement apps aswell as an entire ROM.
The developer has made a skin replacement update.zip file however this also changes the status bar which didn't suit my head unit setup. I emailed the developer and he was kind enough to talk me through how to replace just the APK files, and this worked great.
I'm not sure if he wants me to discuss how to do this though as his apps aren't free to share.

I’ve tried different apk editors but I didn’t managed to actually install the edited files.
If I can do that I will put a guide on how to modify those

Question: Dasaita PX6 MAX10

Hi all! New user here.
I just purchased this HU and I like it, but I would like to make a few mods, including:
- ability to access all apps while car is in motion
- add standard android buttons to switch between apps / split screen, etc.
I've been reading the posts about updated firmware, but I'm not sure if any of that addresses these issues, nor which firmware to use. Any pointers would be appreciated!
You want to read thru MTCD forums

Emulate an entire MIPS system (or at least make it boot)

I have in my Renault Kwid the default, MediaNav Evolution (MN2) screen, with software version 9.1.3. I'm looking to modify some of the "hidden" configs, by entering to menu called MICON MENU, but since documentation and information about that hidden menu is so limited and contradictory, I wouldnt like to try it on the hardware itself, but instead, have a virtual machine where i can easily test what things go.
Its obvious that i would have to also emulate all the peripherals that the device itself has, but i think its possible to "bypass" them. I dont know yet, but i would like to try it out.
First of all i would like to get the OS to boot.
This is all the info I got for now:
CPU: 667MHz MIPS
RAM: 1GB
OS: WINDOWS CE 6.0
Ive also got an "update file" wich appears to have most of the operating system (i think).
Ive looked a bit in how to get starded. AFAIK, i will need to use qemu, but thats all i could understand.
Thanks!
Hello, i got a 2017 Clio recently with the same piece of HW and im looking through every exploit i can before paying to get an after-market screen, did you have any luck with your tries?

Sorry, I left the idea as the renault system is already pretty crappy, and trying to mod it was already worthless. If you have any MN2, your best option is to change it for the new one linux based MN3, or buy a third party one

No worries thanks for the rapid response, do you have any links for a MN3 head unit ? I've been searching to check if its worth the money but no luck so far, all i can find is 3rd party ones.

i dont think you can buy them. you'll have to probably go to a renault service center and ask them to change it. you could try looking on facebook marketplace, but you have to find a good deal
Hey, I also have an MNE, I agree that it's crap, however I would like to ask if anyone has tried to run AutoKit-WINCE on it?
@FAB1150 mentioned it in another thread
Or maybe someone tried to launch EasyConnected ?

Well, it would probably fail, as the guy in the thread you linked said, since those head units are made different but with the same propose, meaning that the hardware and software might be different, but they do exactly the same.
Also, one big factor about Windows CE, is that every OS build is strictly limited to work with the desired hardware that it was built for, more or less like any android ROM. The difference lays that Windows CE manages hardware resources different than any standard OS, thus forcing the app developer to make as many versions of the app as head units he wants to support.
Because of that, is that I want to emulate the entire MNE system, so I can test apps without ruining the device itself.
So far, I haven't made much progress. All I know now is that the CPU is an R4000 based mips cpu, with the model number AU1320. I haven't been able to find any datasheet yet. I also been learning about QEMU/KVM, but I did no progress given that I'm having some trouble to make a basic machine and support about mips emulation is very limited.
My main idea now is to port/develop some kind of scrcpy for the MNE
