GSI on TMO McLaren 5G - OnePlus 7T Pro 5G McLaren Questions & Answers

Possibly stupid question, but wondering:
Would a GSI from Lineage or something possibly work on our device? Is it correct to assume that 5G wouldn't work? I was considering looking into it, but wasn't sure what kind of outcome it'd yield. Thoughts?

Not a stupid question, I would wait imho. Things break that cannot be fixed with msm as of right now like fingerprint. I believe they got it figured out but flashing is not worth it at this point. I would wait till some roms made for our device come out.

Should I go ahead and go through the bootloader/rooting processes?

I've wanted to grill out some of the problems with the A7 that's came with it, but after realizing I've never done this before, I've also noticed there's no actual ROM out yet
Should I just wait until the ROM comes and maybe some full guides?

Welcome to the A7 Family,
which problems are you running into right now? if you have no need for Root. i'll just say hold on till some development start to kick.......
P.S. not every problem can be fix having root access

Really just cosmetic things like the notification bell, maybe switching up the emojis, small things. I always wanted to try a different ROM on this phone, so I guess it isn't anything that needs to be done right now.

just unlocked my bootloader and rooted. Wonderful being able to use my root apps again. Chnaged my emoji using emoji switcher which i really wanted to do. Hate the stock android emoji.. debloated a little, and now about to change the system to my favorite font. I say go for it. If you do, let me know. I can send some pointers
considering there is absolutely no rom support yet I would hold off, wait out your 30 day return period and if there are roms after that and you want to void your warranty then do it then. Also I'm sure people are working on getting the bootloader unlocked without contacting ZTE so there is another reason to wait.

If you want to wait until the 30 day period is over, you can go ahead. im keeping the phone for a while so ive just gone ahead and rooted. there is a method to unlock the bootloader without contacting ZTE. I did it that way. its fairly easy.

There is a fairly simple way to Unlock your boot loader right now, it seems to work for most people. Its possible they may figure out a way to block this in future updates (I am not an expert). If you are with in your retail return window I would recommend trying the method because if you manage to really mess something up, you can at least return it.
Just take your time.
The instructions are for multiple versions and slightly out of order. Make sure everything is working before you begin.
If you plan to go through ZTE and in theory void your warranty, then by all means wait until you really need it.
Good luck.

I just got my A7. Coming from OPO with a sultan rom running xposed. I want to root but honestly I am not super smart developer. I am good following direction and figuring things out. I honestly love Sulan rom and would love it on A& but I doubt he does a rom for it as he mostly is busy with school and sticks with OPO or OP3.
I am debating on rooting as I mostly just want xposed for its youtube app adblocker and in app blocking apps.
I would suggest waiting til roms are developed and little more mature. Which if judging by the speed of root being available I would say could be as soon as few months or less.
Big respect for the developers and who keep the community and advancements going. Thanks all!
Does anyone know a way to disable the notification bell with root? Thanks

I don't think you can disable the bell and keep the lockscreen exactly as it is.

Any hope for Lineage on the h873?

Hey y'all,
Apologies if this has been asked before but I did a search for h873 and couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. I see there's a distro of Lineage for the h870 and the us997. I'm up here in the Great White North and the h873 is the one available up here. Thinking about picking up a G6 but really want Lineage, I'm used to it on my OnePlus One.
Anyone have any experience installing either the h870 or us997 distro on an h873? Don't really want to re-sign a contract without knowing if it'll work. Any alternative phone if not? I really want the G6 but I want something with solid Lineage support.
Cheers and TIA

There is no bootloader unlock for H873, this means no root, no TWRP and no custom rom.
So nope, there is no way to install lineageos on that model

Man, that's brutal. I get seriously disheartened by things like this. I've had my OPO for 3.5 years now and I'm pretty dang ready for an upgrade, but if that's the case I don't know what to do. I just want a way to de-google my stuff, but tough to do that without root. Thanks for your response though.

Don't know if it's possible in Canada but you can try to grab an US997 (without any other letters or numbers), or go for other OEM, if modding is really a problem for you then buy an Op5 or a used Op3t

Yeah sadly I'm too poor for that, paying for a wedding atm, so was trying to swing something on contract. No big deal, might have to knuckle down and use stock for a while.

That might be my only option. If there's literally no chance of the h873 getting an unlocked bootloader than RIP, I guess I'll either get a G6 or a Huawei P10 and disable gapps.
Get a Pixel on contract if that's important to you. Very similar specs, better cameras, but no wide angle.
I went with a Huawei. I'm not buying a Pixel when they're insanely overpriced and I'm trying to de-google.

It does make it a challenge. See the following for supported LG devices:
http://developer.lge.com/resource/mobile/RetrieveBootloader.dev?categoryId=CTULRS0703
I recently went through a similar search in upgrading from an old Samsung Galaxy S5 running LineageOS. I first tried a ZTE Axon 7 which is an amazing device for its price but it had a terrible camera under LOS. I finally settled on an HTC 10 which works well under LOS and has good camera performance (which was important to me).
If you already have the LG G6 for the moment you'll have to live with stock. However a debloat and freeze with an app such as Titanium Backup may be sufficient. Throw in Nova Launcher and you may forget you're on stock.
That said, I feel your pain. It seems that we have to jump through increasing hoops in order to run something other than stock on *our* devices.

Tmobile SM-G955U S8+ Rom Question

Just purchased an S8+ (G955U) from swappa for tmobile, I'm not really seeing any roms that say they are compatible with the G955U.
I've also never owned a device where there was a standard model and a plus model, so im not sure if I just dont know the correct label to look for in a rom thread.
TL;DR: Are there Tmobile G955U S8+ Roms/Kernels?

This device has a locked bootloader. You can search the partcyborg thread in the s8+ threads for the only rooted rom.
But it is nice.
Be aware with locked bl no kernels other than the engineering kernel which limits battery charging to 80%
The roms batt life more than makes up for the 80% though

Ahh ok thanks, I just happened to find that thread also. Since I'm new to this territory, I'll go ahead and ask what im sure is a cringey question, but atleast I'll know and never touch it again.
Is this 80% battery thing something that's a relatively new issue and still has a chance of being fixed/worked around? Or is this something that's older and well established as a "never going to be fixed so stop asking" kinda thing?
Thanks for all the information, I appreciate it. I like to learn as much as I can about a device before I start tinkering with it.

It's a eng kernel thing and it's always being researched. But no way to charge as right now to 100%

Oh that's interesting. So I guess either the engineering kernel being modified or unlocking the boot loader would be the available solutions.
Thanks again for the info, now to patiently watch/wait to see what unfolds.

Getting one on Monday, can't wait!

I hear good things about OxygenOS, saying it's like stock AOSP, but with nice features added in, without all the bloat. I'm gonna test drive it for a couple days and see how it goes, but my question is, is OOS easy to root?
Next question, are any custom Android 10 ROMs good enough to use as daily drivers? I read through the threads and it seems LineageOS has issues with flashing Gapps, others fail CTS/Safety Check, and so on. Seems kinda troublesome.

Welcome Aboard!
Yes. OOS is pretty good. It's closer to Stock Android with some neat Customizations thrown in. Heck, it's better than Stock Android. It's very easy to root. There is a Tutorial in the Guides Section. If you have a Question you can ask for help and we'll be happy to guide you.
Android 10 Custom ROMs are available, and as you observed, some of them have issues. EvolutionX is a Stable Q ROM that I have been running as my Daily Driver for a long time. I'd recommend you flash that. Safety Net can be fixed via a Magisk Module but it should be fine.
Thanks for the info! Been looking at that one as well, considering giving that one a go.
Another question, what do they mean when they say, "OxygenOS in both slots"?

OnePlus 6T is an A/B phone. It has two /system partitions. Basically, before flashing the ROM, you have to Flash OOS and TWRP. Then Reboot to Recovery and again flash OOS and TWRP. After that, you can flash the ROM. You can read more about A/B online. Just Google it.

I meant compared to other stuff I've flashed, lol. Started with HTC Vogue, I've unlocked and rooted just about every device I've owned. This sounds difficult, but nothing some reading and preparation won't fix.

Sorry bout that. Wasn't trying to intimidate you. Anyway, it's fairly easy compared to Samsung, at least the flashing part. But the whole A/B Fiasco is a Pain to Understand. There is a bit of a Learning Curve involved. Good Luck and if you need any help, don't hesitate to ask.

Not sure if mine will include it. The seller only stated that it comes with a "generic type-C USB cable" and already has a tempered glass screen protector on it.
Got the phone now. Nope, no adapter. Sad.
Weird quirk, can't seem to turn the ringer on, as it seems to be stuck on mute. Volume keys only affect the media volume.
Another thing is that it looks like Google Camera and Dialer aren't available for this device. The Play Store also declares this phone "not certified."
Edit: figured out the ringer issue, it was the switch on the side.
Enjoy your 6T.
If you have any issue with the glass screen protector I recommend switching to a self-healing liquid application plastic one. I used to be a big TGSP guy but am loving the plastic one I put on a year ago. With curved screen edges on newer devices it's the way to go.

I've flashed this and everything is working fine, except my mobile connection. It keeps disconnecting, and even when it connects it's usually on Edge/2G. It DOES occasionally connect to LTE+ and works for a while. It's saying "T-Mobile" even though I'm using MetroPCS (which I know works fine because it was working on stock 9.0.16 and international 9.0.17). I checked the APN settings and they seem fine. Only modification I've made was flashing Magisk. I followed the steps to a T. Don't know what I did wrong.
EDIT2: It appears that Magisk is NOT causing the signal issues. I'm at a loss at this point.

I've unlocked and rooted a while ago but I have a question regarding persist.img

I'm pretty sure I'm reading it wrong but are you supposed to back up persist.img before unlocking or after unlocking it seems as if my persist is fine fingerprint is working all sensors are working. I'm guessing I should back it up in case I screw something up as to not lose fingerprint? Also how would one go about updating while rooted I'm still on 10.19 security patch December 1st of 2019. Whoops

It isn't a bad idea to backup regardless. However, you do NEED to back up if your gonna be using a custom ROM and ever wanna revert back. I switched to AOSiP and backed everything up prior to it. While I do have the backup, not gonna lie, I probably won't use it.. OOS was getting messy for me and these custom ROMs are a breath of fresh air!

I was thinking of going that route honestly but I rely heavily on the fingerprint sensor so I might wait until illusion supports it. What were the steps you had to take to install it? If you don't mind me asking.

Not going to lie, it feels a tad more involved then standard flashing procedures, but totally worth it.. I had to fiddle with it a little bit, but the guys in the telegram group that's linked were super helpful. I'd give instructions, but it's pretty involved and I can't remember entirely tbh.. They're currently working on the fingerprint issue now, so hopefully, that can be done real soon.. but seriously if you want a better Android experience, AOSiP is awesome and it beats OOS by a mile!

Same... I've been rooting since my Galaxy S2 way back in the day.. I just hate Google's required A/B partitioning scheme that requires different and more complicated flashing procedures.. It'd be nice if TWRP was fully functioning, but due to the different flashing schemes, we've still got a bit of time before we get that...

Yes the lack of TWRP is rough but I feel in a normal environment it's probably a good thing. It's ashame Google has strayed away from the whole nexus ideology of Android is for developers and Android can be used for power users. But I understand the reasoning behind it
