Put the motherboard of the mi9t pro in a mi9t - Redmi K20 / Xiaomi Mi 9T Questions & Answers

Hi, I would like to put the motherboard of my mi9t pro with broken display in a mi9t that I took used. Can I replace only the motherboard or should I also replace the charging board and other components?

Disassemble and see if the LCD is the same, if so, just replace screen - I did that before in Samsung, HTC, Apple, Huawei.

Replace all components... Main camera sensor is better, has laser focus, faster charge port and etc

So could I just buy replacement parts for a PRO and upgrade my non pro model?

No because these parts needs snapdragon 855.

Easier to sell and buy the Pro version.. You would only keep the frame, front camera and Screen.

I replaced all the cards, the pro also has an additional board to connect the GPS antenna (the pro has two gps). Everything works well, but I had to swap the heat pipes which are different between the pro and the normal one. I don't know if it would turn on the same but the pro's battery cable has two tracks at the top (the normal one has one)

Do you have pictures or video? It might help some people..

I leave you some photos that I took with only the disassembled motherboard of the pro. I had to reassemble it today to replace the thermal double-sided tape that when the heat pipe is dismantled it gets damaged (in fact I had too high temperatures). I did not have to replace the heat pipe of the normal mi9t as it has not been damaged.

Did it work?
I have a dead mi 9t (motherboard) I want to fix with a 9t pro (broken lcd).
Were you able to make it work?

did it work? I got my Mi 9T damaged on the board level (overheating and keeps rebooting over and over). I already tried every ROM flash I could do and rule out other components, which led me to the motherboard being the culprit. Planning to slap on a mi 9t pro motherboard I will buy online. Please let me know if it worked, and if what had to be done to make it work

never mind. The Mi 9T chassis and parts surely does work just fine when you slap on a Mi 9T Pro motherboard in there. You just need to replace the main camera for it to work. Do in mind though that by swapping in a pro motherboard into a non-pro chassis will not give you Dual GPS, and probably a little more heat output (A lot more if you happened to receive the Pro Premium 855+ variant). However, it would be a very clean swap if you can find the necessary parts to make all these features work.
The parts that will need replacing to make it like a Mi 9T Pro:
1. Main Camera and Telephoto Module (otherwise, you wont be able to open camera app). Wide angle camera doesn't need replacing.
2. GPS board, Speaker Module for the Pro variant, Antenna cable (for the Dual GPS)
3. *Optional* Mid frame and Graphite Heatsink (if you can find one). I myself had to replace my mid frame and then cut myself a 0.5mm copper plate.
4. *Optional* Super AMOLED display and flex cable (only make a swap when you absolutely need it. My replacement OLED screen works just fine except for confusing my taps sometimes as glide typing, but it also does this on my plain Mi 9T board).
But if you only want to make a plain motherboard swap, you'll only need to replace the Main camera and telephoto module. The rest are pretty much plug and play, just make sure to apply a generous amount of thermal paste so you wont overheat by that much. Been using my phone this way for about a week now and so far no problems.
EDIT 12/23/22: You don't need to replace the charging port and charging flex and batteries. They all still work fine without replacing. I'm using a 33W charger with Scene5 monitoring the charger output and I can say it's sending 27W to my phone without problems (but I had to replace my batteries when I destroyed it trying to install multiple batteries).

[Q] Screen replacement for ZE551KL: would Selfie (ZD551KL) screen also work?

I've edited the whole post to simplify it:
Dropped nine-day-old Zenfone 2 Laser (ZE551KL). My heart shattered, as did the display.
Asus Canada wants $124 to repair it (Canadian dollars; estimate provided by telephone representative), and the only location to repair it is 3388 km (2105 mi) away and apparently takes walk-ins only, but I'm quite comfortable repairing it myself if the repair process is similar in ease to the Zenfone 2 walkthrough.
Searching for ZE551KL LCD modules returns only two or three matches. Since I can't post links because I'm too new at xda, I'll just post the search terms: "90AZ00T1-R20010"* and "90AZ00T1-R20020"* (I don't know what the difference is, but they're both unavailable anyway), as well as "B90AZ00T1-R20010" (which I would need to e-mail about availability, compatibility, and pricing). (Note the leading B on the Czech website part number, which makes searching for the module a bit difficult, since searching for either of the part numbers only ends up returning the original pages).
Update: I heard back from AsusParts.eu (where I found the asterisked parts above), and they said that they can't get the parts and that I'd need to get it serviced through Asus. The phone was only released in November, though, so I'm wondering if part availability will change (not just with them, but in terms of the lack of availability anywhere online).
The rest of the search results are for:
ZD551KL (Zenfone Selfie), which has essentially identical components and size, but the front display has a larger, better, centred 13 MP camera (compared to the ZE551KL smaller, offset 5 MP camera), but specifically mentions "ZD551KL ZE551ML" along the ribbon cable, and the AliExpress sellers say that it's compatible with both, while the eBay sellers only mention ZD551KL.
ZE551ML, which has different internal components, but the display and device dimensions appear to be identical.
If the ZD551KL display also supposedly works for the ZE551KL but the cameras are markedly different, it appears that I'd have to replace the camera module, too, and that's when I become particularly concerned about compatibility (both physical and firmware). Does anyone know if it actually would work?
The ZE551ML screen looks identical, but I'm not sure if it actually is. Does anyone know about this?
Any thoughts on other places to try finding the actual specific display?
I contacted Asus, and (no surprise) they won't give me any part-related information. "Send the phone in" is all that I'm told.
Thank you very much!
Well the smaller resolution might cause problems.

An authentic ZD551KL screen should have the same resolution as the ZE551KL. It's the size of the part, ribbon cable compatibility, and camera that I'm particularly worried about.
Can you buy it from the repair center or ASUS?

Unfortunately not. I figured there was nothing to lose trying to call them and live chat them requesting anything of the sort (part information, available to purchase, etc), but they would give me no information whatsoever and kept referring me back to opening a service ticket for repair. Their lips are sealed; they insist on doing it themselves.

Well you will need to see if the camera is attached to the same board and if you can get a different front plate so that the screen will fit on the different phone. The ribbon cable itself should be fine. Most parts should be rather modular. The only concern would be the front bezel.
Silly question but I just bought the phone on Amazon 32Gb and 3Gb RAM for $199. One of the selling point for me was the Corning Gorilla Glass 4, Its supposed to be pretty durable, so how did yours crack? And have you been able to find a replacement screen you can diy?

Mine was on a desk in a communal laboratory office, attached to a long charging cord. Someone asked where something was, so rather than describe its location, I got up to show her where it is. The long cord was tangled in my chair wheels, so when I backed my chair up, it pulled the phone off of the desk, making it land face down onto a slightly gritty laminate tile floor.
I found a screen from a place in Germany. They say that they get their parts directly from Asus. Both of those statements should make you expect that it won't be cheap, and indeed it is not: €80. That's within a few dollars of what Asus Canada was wanting to charge me.
I would like to clear one thing to you dear,
ZE551KL & ZD551KL have different screens.
ZE551KL has 401PPI but ZD551KL have 403PPI.
my working twrp for ZE551KL does not work with ZD551KL due to this issue ( same twrp with full working touch for ze551kl does not work with zd551kl touch)
decide yourself.
for confirmation you may read my twrp 2.8.6.0/2.8.7.0 thread.

Do you have any thoughts as to why the Selfie LCD (even direct from Asus) has "ZD551KL/ZE551KL" written on it, if that's the case? Just curious.
In the same boat
I dropped mine on New Year's eve
I searched on Aliexpress (tinyurlDOTcom/njtjav2) and found a replacement digitizer for around $35 (free shipping) which is not that expensive.
I'm from Europe btw.
Tomorrow I plan to go to my local Asus representative to see if they can replace it for around the same price, if not Aliexpress it is.

Just be really careful. All of the results that were in your link are screens for the Selfie (look at the top of the screen, and see how it differs from the Zenfone 2 Laser ZE551KL). The speaker and camera holes are in completely different spots.

Thanks for this.
I went to the official Asus representative today and they offered original replacement screen for around €50 with warranty which is a no brainer for me.
I'll wait about a month which would have been the same if I went the Aliexpress route (if they had a screen for my model that is).
To be honest I was surprised that it was that cheap. I guess competition is a good thing

Did you buy the phone using a credit card?
Many credit cards have accidental damage insurance for the first 90 days of purchase.
Usually you have to file a claim and get the work approved so it takes time, but they pay for it once you do all the paperwork stuff.
I checked Aliexpress today and found something that appears to be the right one, at least on the surface: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Orig...tizer-Assembly-Free-Shipping/32620432352.html I still need to call Asus to find out what it will cost in USD for me to get them to fix it.

I want you to know how nearly-completely-psychotically thankful I am for your post. I called by bank earlier to ask about what kind of purchase protection I had, and the answer was disappointing, but after you made your post, I looked up information for my bank, and it suggested that I should indeed have 90 days of accidental damage insurance.
I called them, filled out the form, and received the cheque a few days ago. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Galaxy S8 G950U1 - Swap Motherboard with SoC

Hello, guys/girls.
The thing is I already changed the battery of the device, now I have to change the charging port because it is getting to a point where I can hardly charge the device.
My points is this:
Can I get some damaged galaxy s8 950F with broken screen lets say and just get the motherboard with the SoC and swap it with mine because I hate myself for not searching to see that the snapdragon is bootloader locked and I hate that.
Thank you and have a lovely day!

It's almost a certainty that it would not work with just a motherboard swap. As far as I know the screen and frame and probably some small parts like the vibration motor, headphone jack, fingerprint reader, loudspeaker and possibly the wireless charging coil would be transferrable. You'd need the G950F motherboard, charging port board, camera modules (Snapdragon cameras are Sony IMX while Exynos cameras are Samsung ISOCELL and aren't interchangeable) and possibly the black plastic module at the top rear of the phone that contains the antennas. Basically you'd need a G950F with a broken screen to get all of the required parts.

Well, you wouldn't actually be swapping the screen, you'd be keeping the screen and frame of your G950W and basically transferring all the components from the G950F into it. It's not terribly difficult to do if you have all of the parts, but you'd have to do your research to make sure you know how to do it. Lots of videos on YouTube and a guide on iFixit to go by.

I will second this. As i have repaired and dismantled several s8s. Their not really hard. But you most def need the right stuff to do it.
Thank you for the answers, gentlemen.

Priv-like Android device building

Hi everyone,
I own a Priv and can't do without a keyboard. Seeing that (as of today) no new portrait slider has been announced, and modding the motherboard itself is unrealisitic, I've decided to find a motherboard and screen off a newer phone and sort-of slap them on a spare chassis I've got lying around.
Feel free to add suggestions and comments below, I need all the expertise I can get. Hit the like button if you're interested, so i can get a head-count. If you guys and gals are interested, I'll post pics as I go along.
Keyboard & Interface:
In an ideal world, I'd be using the priv's existing (and exquisite) PKB which also has touch capabilities for scrolling and moving the cursor. Unfortunately I've not yet found the pinouts for that (and is more complex to interface). I have however found a website where a good soul published info and diagrams for a Q10's Keyboard and then connected those to an IC using a board with a Hirose connector (which he then connected to a raspberry pi project). My plan is similar. Since I don't know at which point in the motherboard I can make an input for a keyboard, the best strategy is to wire the keyboard's interface chip into the USB connections, as Android natively supports USB keyboards and mice. I can then use a microswitch (mechanical or magnetic) to disconnect the keyboard's signal when the slider closes.
If someone does know the pinouts of the Priv's connector, do let me know, it would be great to be able to use it!
Motherboard & Screen:
First thing that springs to mind, is that since the screen will be sliding a couple of inches, the phone off which I'll take the screen and motherboard needs to have a long flex-ribbon, usually found when a motherboard is on the top, and the screen connects on the bottom (such as the oneplus 5). This also means the charging port would also be nice to be a separate unit. I'm not too worried about cooling as there's a nice big metal slider frame to which all this will stick on, but failing that, i could also make a metal back with shallow fins to dissipate heat. The less features there are directly on the screen, the less things are likely to fail.
Requirements:
So the basic point of all this is to have the keyboard hooked up to the motherboard of a rootable system which can be easily modified. Phones like Xiaomi, Oneplus ... fit this bill well. First thing that springs to mind is a Snapdragon 8xx as performance is of course, vital. The camera also needs to work although the resolution is not critical. NFC, Fingerprint sensor, SD card slot, GPS with Galileo, Wireless charging and other niceities are highly desireable, but I might give some of them up to accomodate other things depending on how critical they are. Unfortunately not many flagships have 5.4" screens or less, so the metal slider will be modified to accomodate this.
I'll choose a nice, big battery and place it in the bottom, right below the keyboard as the CoG needs to be really low to make the phone comfy to type on without letting it tip over.
Finally, a plastic or metal cover can be modelled to fit all this, and will probably be cheap to make. If the screen is bigger than the frame, i'll also have to make a second cover around the border, secured to the main slider frame.
The Q10's keyboard has arrived. The connector seen in the middle with a black ribbon has 24 contacts (plus 4 contacts in the extremities which are not counted, probably used for grounding). By comparison, the Priv connectors (male on top, female on motherboard) has 20 contacts despite the priv's trackpad function.
For those of you curious about the BB Passport, I've had a quick look inside and the connector is identical to the Q10's keyboard, although it works like the Priv. Rather confusing.
I'll be mapping the pinouts once the PCB and connectors arrive, unfortunately that's gonna be a long wait as they have to come to Germany from the U.S.
I finally have enough parts to start putting the encoder together. It is an SK5126 keyboard encoder from Sprintek. At just 7 x 7mm with 0.5mm pitch, it was not easy to solder on, but definitely doable with a bit of practice and common sense. The chip itself is not expensive (15usd a pop) but being in Germany, I had to pay through the nose for shipping and shameless customs. Sprintek's sales dept. have been very helpful though. Once I wired the PCB to an old USB cable (and a couple of resistors & capacitors), it was very much plug & play. I'm pleased.
Now it's time to wait again for the next bit of PCB and female connectors for the keyboards... It's at times like these that I regret the EU not having a trade agreement with the US.
The adapter PCB and Hirose female connector for the keyboard finally arrived today, but that's where the good news ends. Unfortunately the seller did not solder them together so I had to do it myself. That's when an obvious fact hit me in the face: the connector's melting point is lower than the solder paste's melting point. The first connector simply folded in a mess of molten plastic under the hot air. I tried the reballing method on the second (and last) connector, which simply pulled the individual legs of the connector apart.
Upon putting the PCB of the Encoder and the connector next to each other, it's clear that part of the success i had with soldering the encoder chip lied in having a footprint with nice long exposed contacts which allowed the surface tension of the solder to pull everything in place. That could not work on the much shorter footprint of the connector PCV. I've ordered some more connectors, it's gonna be a long wait, though I've yet to think of a proper way to solder without melting the connector.
So I've finally had a breakthrough. Some new PCBs arrived from Hong Kong and after a few molten connectors, I've managed to perfect the technique enough to not get any shorts. From there on, it was pretty straightforward. I mapped the keyboard's pinouts (red pcb) to the correct Row/Coloumn inputs of the encoder (green pcb) using the thin wires. It looks a bit messy until i figure out in which position the PCBs will sit inside the chassis.
I'm tempted to also try mapping the Priv's original keyboard, unfortunately, that's tricky, as there's no info about it online. It has a 20-pin connector (as opposed to 24 on the Q10) which also transmits touch input via a Synaptics microchip. I'll try going through it with a multimeter, if i can at least map out the button-matrix, then finding out the synaptics output will be a tad easier.
In the meantime, another issue is on my mind. I've been looking at teardowns of various snapdragon 7xx and 8xx phones and it's clear that some components (mostly the prox sensors) on most, if not all models, are soldered directly on the motherboard, which makes it difficult if I plan on putting the screen on the sliding portion of the chassis and the motherboard on the fixed portion of the chassis. I'm going to have to rethink the whole idea. If i put a lot of components on the sliding part of the chassis, then i risk making the phone top-heavy and thick. Unfortunately I do not have the technology to change this.
There is probably going to be a compromise somewhere, and I need to decide where to draw that line before I order more expensive parts.
very (!) interesting idea(-s) !!
I am incredibly curious to see the outcome, afraid I cannot really provide any help.
it is a real shame that blackberry didnt even provide some use-at-your-own-risk stuff to boot unsigned code...
maybe you want to try shopping for parts in china directly, I almost never pay customs (value below ~€20) for stuff.

Thanks mate.
I already buy a lot of parts from China, however 1 thing I couldn't find online from there was an easy-to-use, low power encoder. I had to get it from Sprintek in California. Their products are really good and the price is also good. Unfortunately i had to pay a lot of money for customs (which of course is not Sprintek's fault). The encoder chips themselves cost me around $15 each, the programming software is free and the chip responds right away as soon as you plug it into the pc. They also have a good after-sale assistance.

They served rather rare items for me some times...

I can finally update with some good news. After ironing out all the issues (most of which concern the pesky Hirose connector which connects the keyboard to the PCB), I took the 2 boards off the metal frame and made myself a little box from PVC sheets which I then glued to an old Xiaomi phone cover. The reason I am testing it this way rather than just building the slider I wanted to build is to prevent having to mod the Xiaomi phone while testing (I've grown quite attached to this phone despite having bought it cheap).
I have also put a small switch on the side which directly cuts off the power to the chip (this way it saves power and seems to work pretty fine).

Have just received the Mi 9T I ordered from Aliexpress, wrong protective sticker put?

It's probably not important, but I bought from "Xiaomi Official Store" (which is probably not really official Xiaomi) on Aliexpress the Global version Mi 9T. Two things: the seller declared the full price on the package and I ended up paying full taxes for it, eh.
And while the phone seems legit—the package was completely sealed and the recharger inside is indeed the EU charger rather than Chinese+adapter (and the writing next to the lenses is in English, in case they still have Chinese writing on local models)—the plastic screen protector placed on the front didn't look like the ones I saw in unboxing videos. Instead of showing the specs of the phone, it had some pretty faint, half-erased writing that I didn't recognize at first. I then realized printed on it is actually what goes on the cover of the back of the phone (that front wasn't cut for where the back lenses are, though).
Isn't that strange? Shouldn't this part in the packaging process be completely automated?

It seems like there are several packaging for the phone depends on the version. Mine was also the EU too not the global and the sticker was basically one piece front and back not one for front and one the back, and had no printing on the front and it had a spec of dust underneath it too!. it's my first Xiaomi and Chinese phone so I didn't expect much but I did notice. I inspected the phone because I thought it might be K20 not Mi 9T but it seemed legit so I dismissed it because the phone is working properly and it doesn't seem like its refurbished or anything like that. I guess the packaging service (and the quality of it) differs from factory to another.
Do you have a picture?

I don't know if there's an actual specific "Global Version", they call those that aren't for the Asian market as such. I didn't take the stickers off yet as I'm waiting for the screen protectors and case I bought, but it might be one piece as you mention. The front cover only has the printing very faintly showing, at first I didn't recognize what's written. But it's not mirrored, so it's probably not from touching the ink on the back sticker before being placed around the phone. It also arrived a bit dirty.
The package itself says Mi 9T, so it shouldn't be the K20. But I'm not even sure the Mi 9T really had a non-global version, because I think the K20 (which is basically the same phone but under the now-separate Redmi brand) launched only in India and perhaps China too, while the 9T model is what being sold elsewhere.

Both EU and Global technically global. The EU has some security requirements required by the EU. Its basically the same phone with modified software. But the K20 is different. The global/EU version has more 4G frequencies/bands the K20 doesn't have. It's not just the brand and the region. The actual hardware is different when it comes to 4G reception

watch your battery...

My beloved XT1635-02 is dead.
I was removing and replacing the gel protective cover to hide my T pass behind it and noticed what looked like the center section of the display screen bulging out/separating from the case. Long story short, the plastic bag that encases the battery had swollen and pushed it out(battery out-gassing). Either that, or my efforts to remove the display cracked the display. Only the top inch of it works. I removed the battery and disposed of it properly expecting that it was about to explode. Just checked and cheapest display is about $33 and battery is about $10. I had ordered a used Moto X4 yesterday ($100), but was hoping to make this into a spare, but at that price it gets trashed. Life goes on...
Running on my old Moto G3 - ALWAYS have a spare!!!
Note, I had almost never used the fast-charge charger.
:crying:
I think this is a known issue with the moto z play. I had to get my battery replaced after it "puffed" and pushed the screen out of the body. Had to fight tooth and nail with Motorola to cover it under warranty. Now 12 months later from the replacement being installed I can see the replacement battery is starting to puff as well so I am currently looking to replace it with probably a Huawei p30pro or a Xiaomi note 10 pro...
My friend who also bought this phone at a different time and a different store had his first battery puff, had it replaced and the second battery puffed as well. He's now onto his third battery.
I know it's a small sample size of two but still I've never had a phone battery do that before so it seems it may be an issue with this phones battery model

Sample size of 3... thanks for sharing. bad batch of batteries? - probably, if it was happening that fast for you and your friend. I didn't see any deformation of the battery itself when I got it out, but if it's outgassing I wouldn't want to chance it (by pricking the bag with a pin).
Lithium batteries seem to be constantly in the news... Not much to be done, though - everything depends on them these days...
Most any phone out there is good, though I seem to stick with Moto because way back there I got a sammy and it had terrible antennas/reception and moto had great. so I stick with them, for now at least. Did have a huawei way back there and it was fine. Never had a xiaomi but I don't think they work in US with ATT. politics!
I have no intention of modifying the new phone, at least at the moment - too much of a time sink!
how long did you use mzp. I'm in the mzp threads for nearly 2,5 years and you where always there too. So your mzp should have neatly same age as mine
I ordered mine, used, on Jan 11, 2018 so I've had it a month short of 2 years. Hard to say how long it was used before that. sticker on mobo says 2016-09-14 so it's max 3 years old. It's hard to compare stuff that's that old to even older phones because technology continually changes and the insulating layer between the layers inside the battery keeps getting thinner to yield thinner phones. I guess battery problems are just payback for getting thinner phones!
I tryed to replace battery / order a kit from iFixIt but must goten wrong tools or the worst quality of screwhead so now they are rounded.
What tool you used to open battery holder?
have you tryd to unplug 2 cables than hold screen and unplug it again?
i thought a broken my screen when it dident respond and all war of ants pixels then i got cable stuck on right place and it start working again

There is a bracket covering the battery connection that has 6 torx-4 screws. I got my tool kit a long time ago on ebay - probably 3 or 4 phones ago so figure a year or 2 per phone. It's 10 years old.
There are 2 ribbon cables holding the display on. I unplugged both of them, but I wouldn't have known how without finding a video on youtube of a MZP teardown that showed me how.
I will not get a new display for it as they cost $35 plus and a new(to me) X4 cost me $100. My old G3 still works for a spare so I dont need the mzp for a spare.

Yes, was torx 4. Those screws were in really tight so you might have just broken one off.
Phone repair is often a dangerous and costly game.
Often it is better and cheaper to move forward rather than trying to fix the old.

I would highly recommend against buying either brand of phone. Both companies are Chinese owned, and have been proven to have backdoors.
Anyone that values their privacy should NEVER own a Huawei device.
On top of that, they removed the ability to use custom launchers on the mate 10, right before I sold mine.

Realistically I see no more issue with the Chinese having my data than American companies like Google and Facebook. They are just as untrustworthy as the Chinese.
Each to their own though I guess.

@Talos77 you are probably right. Besides, everything these days is made in China! Certainly my Motos are. But I never do anything on a phone I wouldn't want published on a billboard. That said I am now going to unsub this thread and leave you on your own!
Have fun!!!
