Kodi on 10" Onn Tablet - Walmart Onn Tablets General

I'm trying to run Kodi on the 10" Onn tablet. I use Kodi as a frontend for mythtv. While it will play the recorded programs, the touch interface that allows skips and jumps by swiping the running media does nothing. I can bring up the progress bar below the media with a press, which would allow very crude positioning.
I'm running exactly the same version of Kodi on my pixel 3 phone, and I have checked every setting and they exactly match, including the skin settings estuary. On the phone the swipes work.
Touch works on the Kodi interface on the tablet, just not the media swipes. Is it that the tablet can recognize a touch but not a swipe?

I've used the Plex app on mine before and it works fine. I know the older versions of Plex was based off Kodi.

I have had the same problem on my 8" Onn tablet though they sometimes work if you make the same gesture over and over but only on certain parts of the screen. That being said, other video software like VLC works just fine with gesture control it is only Kodi that fails.

Screencast doesn't work

Hello, I don't understand whether the screencast in general is not possible at all on nexus 7, or if the older threads refer only to the 'screencast' app on the market.
Well, I only wanted to remote control the phone. Sometimes I like reading books or comics on the tv....I use airdroid, but airdroid doesn't have any input from the mouse, that means I have to use the tablet to browse menus and so on....mouse input won't work.
I used in the past Remote Web Desktop (with a desire hd and a galxy note) which has an included screencast tool.
That software, with the nexus 7, will cast only an amount of purple - blue - pink pixels. It will record inputs from the mouse (i tried to click on the home button and it worked), but the picture will be just pixel noise.
Same thing with other tools from the market.
I haven't tried the ADB screencast builtin interface but i assume it is the same thing, since it is the same java applet the other APPS are using in the browser.....
so.....is it possible or not? airdroid casts the screen perfectly, but as I said i would like to be able to control the tablet with the mouse, without needing to act on directly on the tablet while watching the screencast on the tv.

MS-DOS games on Fire TV

Hundreds of FREE MS-DOS games possibly playable on Fire TV
I saw a story yesterday about Archive.org having MS-DOS games playable on your browser with no extensions or other extra downloads needed, it works nicely on my computer, then today I thought about my Fire TV, would it work? Here is what I've found so far.
My setup:
Amazon Fire TV - Rooted, no CFW
Software version: 51.1.1.0_user_511069920
USB Keyboard (Rii i8 Mini 2.4GHz Wireless Touchpad Keyboard with Mouse)
Amazon Fire Game Controller
Firefox 32.0.1
Adobe Flash Player 11.1.115.47
Open Firefox
go to: https://archive.org/details/softwarelibrary_msdos
click on game you want to play
I've tried 2 games so far, Oregon Trail and Wolfenstein 3D. Oregon trail seems to work just fine with the USB Keyboard, it even works full screen. Wolfenstein 3D does detect the Amazon Fire Game Controller after a button is pressed, but it doesn't seem to work, even after the suggested refresh. If I try to use the keyboard I get stuck on the input menu and the only way out is going to the Fire TV home screen. Might be worth taking a look at, maybe someone can find the games that work or a way to make them work, maybe a different setup or keyboard will work better.
Why don't you use an emulator instead?
Just try DosBox - there are various versions for Android, I bet at least one will work. I remember using it on a much slower hardware with success (Tegra2 tablet).

New Shield!

Hey All,
New to Shield, not to Android or TV boxes.
For the past year I've been using the Amazon FireTV. Mostly for YouTube which I connect to my phone and for KODI and various add-ons for it. And before that I got a Chromecast early 2013 when they were first released.
Recently I've been loading the FireTV with emulators and connecting a USB hub, Xbox 360 controller dongle etc got a pain so I decided to buy a Shield.
So far, things I like
- Default TV launcher (I have a sideload launcher for my other apps)
- Play Store
- Game performance
- Design of device and peripherals
Things that bug me...
- No pause/play, rewind, forward buttons on either the gamepad or the remote controller? This thing is marketed as Android TV and coming from a Fire TV, I really miss these. Even my 10+ year old Sky remote has a pause button.
- No context / menu button. Makes using some sideloaded apps a real nightmare. Any workaround?
- I have yet to find a way to open the context menu on KODI to add my favourites.
- Cast functionality on the YouTube app is not as expected. If I open the YouTube for TV app from the launcher, I can view my subscriptions and watch videos and I can use the remote for the on-screen controls. There's no way to queue any videos.
- If I connect my phone's YouTube app to the Shield, the Shield goes to the basic UI my old Chromecast used. I can queue videos on the phone, but I can't use the remote or controller on the Shield to do anything except pause.
- I can't see any value in the remote. It adds nothing extra.
Any tips / suggestions?
Thanks!

Since it's an Android device, you got options. You can usually pair just about any Bluetooth remote. In addition Google made a really neat and minimalistic app called Remote Control that works wonderfully with Android TV (at least that's the case for my Nexus player and Shield TV console). There's also this www.amazon.com/dp/B00M4JYTWA/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_5XHvwbH3D7DKJ
Supposedly you can program it to your liking and it has lots of functionality including play/pause and volume controls. There are also controllers with a mouse pad and keyboard built in. Both remotes I suggested have play/pause functions. The Google remote control app doesn't have a mouse, but has a keyboard, a play/pause, select, home, back, and scrolling buttons, of you can opt to use a directional pad with tap to select function, I usually find myself using this remote app over Nvidia controller, it's a free app and very reliable. Personally I like Nvidia's accessory controller concept, but not sure I'd pay $50 for a half baked product when there are so many better universal and all in one remotes out there.

Thanks for the reply.
I have since discovered that X on the gamepad shows the context menu in Kodi and I downloaded Yatse app on my phone which is also nice.
May look into a bluetooth remote.
Never found a workaround for YouTube, but it's only a minor annoyance.

Control non-shield apps with physical remote control?

I just sideloaded Market Helper using the Nvidia Shield Utility found on this forum, and I used it to install All 4 and RTÉ Player. As these apps are designed for touch screen devices I am unable to navigate them using the physical remote control.
Is there some way to make the physical remote control work on these apps, cycling through each different option on screen as I select the cursor key? I am hoping it is possible to do this rather than having to connect a mouse etc.
Upgrade to 6.0. If the app doesn't have any lean back code you can use the right analog stick for a mouse.
Thanks, that is useful, but if the choice is between using the analogue stick with an app on Android TV, or using a normal remote for a version of the same app in Kodi, Samsung Tizen TV OS, or the Roku 3, I will choose one of those, at least where possible.
Is what I'm asking for even theoretically possible? Somehow identifying all the different options on any non-native touch screen app running on Android TV, and the Shield remote cycling a highlight through them as the cursor buttons are pressed?

Android Launcher, Kodi what to do?

HI
I’m a many years user of Kodi on Shield. But now I’m starting to think of going away, if it is possible to almost keep the “same” feel of it.
I use Emby as my “server”, for info.
Is there a way to setup Android TV launcher to act more like Kodi?
This is most important for the movies and series sections.
In Kodi I have menus for Unplayed movies, Wife’s playlist (Emby playlist), new movies, all movies and so on.
Is there a way in the Android launcher to add shortcuts as I do in Kodi for the playlists, and new movies and so on?
I will and can change back to Plex, if this is better for Android Tv launcher and shortcuts, playlists etc.
I really like Kodi, but because of the reason below, I have started the search for other solutions. And Kodi as a launcher would be great, does not look like that is possible without coding an app myself, and doesn't get updates and so on.
I’m using Shield as mentioned over for Kodi and all other streaming apps.
This sort of works well, because there are many possibilities in Kodi for adjustments and so on. But in Android TV on Shield it’s not so good any more. If you use another app like HBO, Kodi almost shuts down all the time. It has to start up again, and that is not a good way to use Kodi, it gives too much waiting time and is annoying.
I think the main problem with this, is that Kodi is not coded to always run in the background, so it always closes. :-(
Petter
I have Kodi running as my launcher.
I used Adb to side load the Launcher Manager (Android TV version) app from this thread and to also disable the stock launcher on my shield.
