Hello, I don't understand whether the screencast in general is not possible at all on nexus 7, or if the older threads refer only to the 'screencast' app on the market.
Well, I only wanted to remote control the phone. Sometimes I like reading books or comics on the tv....I use airdroid, but airdroid doesn't have any input from the mouse, that means I have to use the tablet to browse menus and so on....mouse input won't work.
I used in the past Remote Web Desktop (with a desire hd and a galxy note) which has an included screencast tool.
That software, with the nexus 7, will cast only an amount of purple - blue - pink pixels. It will record inputs from the mouse (i tried to click on the home button and it worked), but the picture will be just pixel noise.
Same thing with other tools from the market.
I haven't tried the ADB screencast builtin interface but i assume it is the same thing, since it is the same java applet the other APPS are using in the browser.....
so.....is it possible or not? airdroid casts the screen perfectly, but as I said i would like to be able to control the tablet with the mouse, without needing to act on directly on the tablet while watching the screencast on the tv.

I've been looking for ways to remote control my VLC and YouTube videos. There are apps out there, but it seems like most of them need to be completely reset every time I close and reopen the browser/viewer. So I figured I could just use a remote desktop app and control it remotely that way. I don't think I'm going to do much gaming remotely, but I do want smooth 1920x1080 play-back. Or will the N4's 1280x768 screen cause it to scale down to a lower resolution? And if so, I'm wondering which is the best app to do it. Does Splashtop THD simply not work on non-Tegra devices? And will the regular HD app be limited to 720p video playback?
I remember back when I used the app on my iPad it would re-scale the whole desktop UI when I synced it to the iPad. It was kind of annoying... And I'd like to know if it will do that again before I start buying any apps.
Wait so you're trying to watch 1080p videos on the n4? It's possible with this app
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1529715
[MOD] YouTube 4.4.11 (v5b), *1080p* / 720p HD (over WiFi & 3G), screen off playback
Not exactly. I want to keep watching my videos on my monitor (which is 1920x1080), I just want to sit back and use my phone as a remote. By using splashtop I should be able to use all of the play/pause and other controls via remote desktop functions.
I want to make sure that running splashtop isn't going to rescale my entire desktop UI to 1280 x 768 in syncing up to my Nexus 4. Like it did the last time I tried it with an iPad. If it does do that then I probably just won't use the app, and then I'd be spending 10$ for nothing.
Oh gotcha, just tried and you can have it use your computer's native resolution :good:
Which one, the regular Splashtop HD, or Splashtop THD?

just the regular version. the hd versions are only for tablets...
the hd versions show up for you in the play store? they don't for me.
I use Spashtop 2 and the only thing it does it change your Windows theme from Aero to classic. It can definitely be used as a remote.

have you tried the official youtube remote app? i haven't tried it personally, may be it has the reset problem you mentioned so you are looking for alternatives?

Now that you mention it. They do show up, but they say "none of your devices are compatible with this app." Good to know, I suppose. Well that settles it I guess. Thanks for the help.
EDIT:
Well, exactly what I was worried would happen happened. The screen automatically resized to 1024x768, with big black bars on my monitor. I can bring it back to full HD without too much trouble, but I have to do so every time I start splashtop on my phone. Is there a way to change the default way it handles being thrown into splashtop? So he doesn't do that resize thing?

edit the settings for the connection in the app, choose advanced, select "use computer's native display resolution"
Excellent!
There's only one little issue with it, but it's not a big deal. I just find that the connection drops too quickly. It seems like the link with my desktop breaks every time my phone goes to sleep. Also I'd like it if screen-rotation would lock... (poking at tiny icons while the screen flips about is not an easy task). But those are probably things I can fix by tweaking some settings.
Thanks again for all your help guys!
Wifi mouse will let you control your pc from afar. And with vlc it has all the stuff you need

Unified Remote is my app of choice.
As you can see, you can use inputs like a touchpad or specific remotes for YouTube, Netflix, VLC, MPC, etc (I only use mouse and Netflix, which I find to be perfect). Using an RDP or VNC client seems like a rather heavyhanded method just to emulate HIDs from your bed/sofa.
Also, I've requested that this thread be moved to Q&A. Do not posts inquiries in any other subforum. Requests are accepted in themes/apps only.
airplay is working on the fire tv including mirror mode using AirPlay/DLNA Receiver (PRO)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.waxrain.airplaydmr
I PAID FOR IT and then sideloaded it using root uninstaller on my phone to make a backup
launched app and made no changes to the default settings
it works perfect
note
the bbc iplayer works on my ipad too but you must enable mirror mode before playing a video the video then shows fullscreen
some times you may get audio and a black screen found if I hit home on the fire remote and then select airplay/mirror device again on ipad it plays perfect again
this black screen bug only happens in mirror mode a minor problem(just hit home and start again)
android and apple tv rolled in to one for an extra $4.90
So this is for mirroring your iPhone on the screen through the fire TV or can this mirror an android phone through the fire TV also?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
this is for iPhone/ipad ios airplay to the fire tv
not android screen mirroring
but there are some airplay type apps for music like doubletwist on android that could use this setup to play music/photos etc
but the mirroring is only for ios devices
I like this app. The developer is very responsive if there are any problems. He has fixed 2 seperate issues for me, and usually responds quickly. I had installed this app when I first got my FTV. After a few days I started getting error messages because the app wasnt installed through the Google Play store. I emailed the developer and he fixed that for me within a day.
AirBuddy for Airplay - music
Airbuddy from amazon' android appstore works great for music. Upgraded via inapp purchase - I primarily use it for music only.
How are these apps different than AllCast? I know one can cast an iDevice to your FTV but AllCast can do movies, photos & music right?

Well being able to use your iOS devices and mirror it on your TV can be very handy. (in example show Safari on the TV).
I downloaded (and paid!) the pro version from the app store, extracted the .apk and sidelined the app on the Fire TV. It works, that's really cool!!

Dear,
Our app has been available on Fire TV app store now. In fact, you can directly purchase it there.

I can attest that it works great and installs painlessly from the Amazon FireTV app store. WaxRain has provided great support on the application.
I can attest that this app is awesome. Works flawlessly 99% of time. BTW, jailbreak your ios device and install movie box. Airplay on fire tv is great. MovieBox blows away XBMC in quality and stability.
Do you know if they make a similar app for android phones. I've tried a bunch and none mirror the screen they just send certain things like music and video

based on your experience - thought I would give it a try ...
installed the (lite) version (AirPlay/DLNA Receiver (LITE)) and get this error on the Fire TV screen when I turn on the "Mirroring" option on either my iPad or iPhone
Built-in Firmware Player in your device does not support this format, Error Code: 1-00000002

I'm trying to get the XFiinity apps to work - via AirPlay - I've tried using the builtin service on XBMC but for XFinity it doesn't work either.

Hi,
I use thise http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...plugin-20&creativeASIN=B00L5HQRGS]AirReciever
*notice 180 coins back.
It does pretty much every thing you can mirror your ipad screen and the lag is low enough so you can easely play games such as the walking dead episode 1 & 2.and other action adventure games. (the audio latency is set well below 200ms with no problems using the iPad3) besides Airplay it also supports DMR/DNLB, and if you have a MAC you can use it as a extra screen natively. this can also be done on PC using the bit limited AirParrot. And it's developed for aFTV.
mirroring lag
Does any one know if mirroring is going to be improved? There seems to be a lot of lag for games my kids play. I tried both AirPlay/DLNA Receiver (PRO) and AirReceiver but both lag with sonic transformed, bubble guppies and more

If you go to the app's website, you can download the "AirPinPCSender" app and install it on your Windows box. I have it on my laptop and it works flawlessly to mirror my laptop to FTV
I just purchased both a
Lenovo Pro Yoga 2
and
Macbook Air 13
Trying to decide which I like better.. while the touch screen is cool and being able to use it as a tablet is fun on the Lenovo - I've had enough wireless connectivity issues that it's been frustrating (not sure if it's windows 8.1 or the card in the computer) - but my old HP stays connected flawlessly so I know it's not the wireless.
I rec'd the Air today - so I'll play with that and make my decision. I already bought and apple TV which works well enough, but the AirParrot app can only mirror the image of the PC and leaves a bar around the entire thing - there's some pretty evident lag as well just browsing.
I originally was going to go w/ the Fire TV and just found out about this app you guys are talking about.
So, essentially I can do a Fire TV (and download the app for airplay?) and download the app to make the apple stream to Fire? I can do both Mirror and 2nd screeN?
Thanks!!
Thank you
Thank you for the idea
Anyone know of a way to mirror an android phone on the fire tv without root? I know AllCast beta can, but iirc you need root and I'm trying to to root my work phone.
Hi folks. For those of you who have this app installed could you please let me know how it good it is at Airplaying video clips captured by the IPHONE / IPAD itself? So I'm not referring to online video (such as iplayer / youtube) being sent to the device, instead I'm asking about video's actually taken on the iphone?
I shelled out for AirReceiver app and although it's good for Airplaying photos and web video content, its crap for video clips cpatured from iphone (LOTS of buffering and really slow).
Also a question for WaxRain, if I pourchase the app, how many devices can I install it on? I myself have 3 FireTVs in my house.
Thanks.
Hey All,
New to Shield, not to Android or TV boxes.
For the past year I've been using the Amazon FireTV. Mostly for YouTube which I connect to my phone and for KODI and various add-ons for it. And before that I got a Chromecast early 2013 when they were first released.
Recently I've been loading the FireTV with emulators and connecting a USB hub, Xbox 360 controller dongle etc got a pain so I decided to buy a Shield.
So far, things I like
- Default TV launcher (I have a sideload launcher for my other apps)
- Play Store
- Game performance
- Design of device and peripherals
Things that bug me...
- No pause/play, rewind, forward buttons on either the gamepad or the remote controller? This thing is marketed as Android TV and coming from a Fire TV, I really miss these. Even my 10+ year old Sky remote has a pause button.
- No context / menu button. Makes using some sideloaded apps a real nightmare. Any workaround?
- I have yet to find a way to open the context menu on KODI to add my favourites.
- Cast functionality on the YouTube app is not as expected. If I open the YouTube for TV app from the launcher, I can view my subscriptions and watch videos and I can use the remote for the on-screen controls. There's no way to queue any videos.
- If I connect my phone's YouTube app to the Shield, the Shield goes to the basic UI my old Chromecast used. I can queue videos on the phone, but I can't use the remote or controller on the Shield to do anything except pause.
- I can't see any value in the remote. It adds nothing extra.
Any tips / suggestions?
Thanks!

Since it's an Android device, you got options. You can usually pair just about any Bluetooth remote. In addition Google made a really neat and minimalistic app called Remote Control that works wonderfully with Android TV (at least that's the case for my Nexus player and Shield TV console). There's also this www.amazon.com/dp/B00M4JYTWA/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_5XHvwbH3D7DKJ
Supposedly you can program it to your liking and it has lots of functionality including play/pause and volume controls. There are also controllers with a mouse pad and keyboard built in. Both remotes I suggested have play/pause functions. The Google remote control app doesn't have a mouse, but has a keyboard, a play/pause, select, home, back, and scrolling buttons, of you can opt to use a directional pad with tap to select function, I usually find myself using this remote app over Nvidia controller, it's a free app and very reliable. Personally I like Nvidia's accessory controller concept, but not sure I'd pay $50 for a half baked product when there are so many better universal and all in one remotes out there.

Thanks for the reply.
I have since discovered that X on the gamepad shows the context menu in Kodi and I downloaded Yatse app on my phone which is also nice.
May look into a bluetooth remote.
Never found a workaround for YouTube, but it's only a minor annoyance.
I just sideloaded Market Helper using the Nvidia Shield Utility found on this forum, and I used it to install All 4 and RTÉ Player. As these apps are designed for touch screen devices I am unable to navigate them using the physical remote control.
Is there some way to make the physical remote control work on these apps, cycling through each different option on screen as I select the cursor key? I am hoping it is possible to do this rather than having to connect a mouse etc.
Upgrade to 6.0. If the app doesn't have any lean back code you can use the right analog stick for a mouse.
Thanks, that is useful, but if the choice is between using the analogue stick with an app on Android TV, or using a normal remote for a version of the same app in Kodi, Samsung Tizen TV OS, or the Roku 3, I will choose one of those, at least where possible.
Is what I'm asking for even theoretically possible? Somehow identifying all the different options on any non-native touch screen app running on Android TV, and the Shield remote cycling a highlight through them as the cursor buttons are pressed?
Hello just recently I purchased a Nvida Shield TV cause its faster then amazon fire and it uses APKs . Anyway my father is old time guy and he watches Turner Classic movies on his tablet so I thought its an apk program it should work on the shield sadly everything i have tried has not work. So i am turning to the experts of this stuff....You guys can you please help me get this to work for my father he loves his black and white TV.
Thanks for you assistance
You can install ES File Explorer (On your, (His) Phone, and the Shield TV, then make a backup of said 'App' from the Phone, then transfer that App to the Shield TV. Using ES File Explorer to install it.
The problems start when you start assuming that Android TV = Android (For Phablets). If the app was only built for for Android Phablet. It most like will have rendering issues. Phone style Portrait vs Landscape. But, the real rub will likely be in the Interface as the Android TV does not support the Phablet Touch UI. So if in turn your App does not allow external Remote Control. Then you may find the App is pretty much useless.
The best advice, for you, and anyone else in your Shoes would be to contact the App Maker (e.g. TCM?), And in short demand an Android TV App.
