Note 4 touch unresponsive in center of screen - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Note 4 SM-N910T3 Android 6.0.1 has an unresponsive strip in the middle of the screen. Landscape and portrait mode no change, safe mode reboot no change, factory data reset no change, installing fresh rooted touchwiz rom no change installing factory touchwiz no root no change. It is always there. I uploaded a couple of screenshots with Developer Options / Show Pointer Location enabled so you can see the missing strip. It becomes a huge nuisance some apps think I'm trying to zoom (hence the zoom percentage square) in one screenshot, scrolling is problematic in either screen orientation. Just trying to see if there is anything I can try before replacing my touchscreen / digitizer. I loved this phone and I have the ZeroLemmon extended battery, case, clip, and many other accessories that go great with this phone. Yes there is a similar thread but does not address my problem. It is not App related. Just trying to get some possible insight before replacing my screen and possibly having same issue. BUT MAINLY I HAVE MY VIPER4ANDROID ON IT THAT I CAN NOT GET WITH MY NEW GALAXY A10 (NO OEM UNLOCKING OPTION)Thanks for your time.

Thanks for the info but I failed to mention I have tried that in my post a above. I appreciate it and maybe it may help someone else having this problem.

I had a similar problem after replacing my USB board. In that case, because the replacement involves separating the glass from the screen and fiddling there, I assumed I broke something.
I think this is a hardware problem, and you need to either reposition the touch screen, or get a new screen, or get a new phone... (I did the latter, since there's so little difference between the price of a good new screen and the price of a note 4).
What I did before replacing the phone was use the smallest on-screen keyboard I could find (swype), and if I wanted to scroll, always from the top. Notice that in my case pen still works nicely, so sometimes I would just get the pen out.

[Q] Resetting the phone without screen OR making the screen work again?

I've got a Samsung Focus that no longer has a working display. It seems the rest of the phone functions perfectly, but I'm unable to see what is happening. I think the display is recoverable, but I'm not positive (it's almost like there's no power being sent to it).
So when I connect to Zune software, I'm unable to view my phone contents because I have a lock pin. This becomes problematic with a non-working display. So one solution to my problem is how can I remove this code OR factory reset my phone without getting screen conformations.
Secondly, would it be worth an investment to repair the screen by buying a new one? It seems to be about ~$130 online for new displays and I'm very comfortable doing modifications like this with mobile devices
Thanks!

What I suggest is read the diagnisis codes thread and see if you find something useful there (code, advice). Personally, I haven't heard of any code disabling the screen but there might be one. The hard reset combo from the wiki should cover that too, I think.
Now, that being said, I see 3 possibilities, higher probability first:
1. screen is damaged (and/or possibly something else). if it's broken, you can confirm.
2. screen connector/cord is loose (should be easy to fix)
3. software/code issue
1 is hardware repair
2 is easy fix, still hardware
3 is easier fix. here, you need a secondary phone, identical. you can perform the exact steps side-by-side to copy/make sure you got it right.
I know it's not a loose connector issue. I've triple checked that and have rubbed it all down in alcohol to make sure it wasn't a dirt issue. I also cannot do anything that requires the digiplex as none of it seems to be registered.
Things that work for sure:
Sound (internal speaker)
Power Button
Volume Buttons
Touch buttons on the front at the bottom (by windows key)
So the screen doesn't work but it's not broken?

[Q] Nexus 4 Screen Replacement issue

My phone took a dive and hit the pavement pretty hard, leaving a half-inch radius arc on the side of the scree. No big deal, but this damage also killed about 25% of the touch sensor surface in a very inconvenient location. So I did what any other good fellow would do: order an OEM part from Ebay.
I installed the screen with much effort (having taken apart phones before it was not difficult to identify and remove the elements, save for that nasty screen) and turned the device on. Imagine my surprise when I saw that my once beautiful Nexus display was reduced to an upsetting mess of artifacts and pixels.
Key notes to consider:
1. The touch screen works 100%, which kind of makes this problem "tolerable"
2. The artifacts shift with each menu and orientatikn, but remain oddly in similar positions in each screen (the artifacts appear in the same location on the home screen no matter what other screen I come from.)
3. Videos are not affected by this (tested on youtube in landscape view)
These primary factors lead me to believe that there is a problem with the software communicating with the hardware. I have checked and re-checked the cables and made sure they are in the right spot and securely connected. My main question is foes anyone have any idea how to resolve this? Do lcd/ digitizers come with any covers on the ports that I may have overlooked? Do I need to re-flash a rom and/or return to stock altogether?
I have done two teardowns to test all the connections, and have abstained from using glues in the event that I may have to do another. Included is an image of my screen taken from another phone.

[Q] Bottom half of screen not responding to touch

I had an exam and removed the battery for my phone for the duration. When I put it back in, the bottom half of my screen stopped responding to touch. The screen itself is unharmed and uncracked. The S Pen still works flawlessly. However, the bottom half of the screen ("above" about 890 pixels on the Y axis) simply does not respond to normal touch. In addition, the volume buttons no longer change my notification volume. They still work for music volume, just not touch volume. When I long-press the power button, the power menu sits at the very top of the screen and has black covering the whole bottom of the screen for some reason. When I receive calls, the buttons are right at the top. Because of this, this seems to be some sort of software issue, but I have no idea what would cause it. Has anyone with more experience with Samsung devices seen this before? Multiple restarts and battery pulls have done nothing.
EDIT: In case anyone else encounters this, it had something to do with my case. I think my phone thought it was a smart cover for some reason. I enabled and disabled smart cover and then removed and replaced the case. It's working fine now.
EDIT: Never mind, that was a coincidence. The issue is DEFINITELY that the phone thinks it has a smart cover on it, but it has nothing to do with my own case.

I've had much the same problem. While the S-Pen was able to make selections that the touchscreen wouldn't, other S-Pen functions such as Air Command and being able to start an Action Memo wouldn't work. Waiting for an extended period of time (like 24 hours) and all of a sudden it started working again. However, while I was waiting, rebooting - even performing a factory reset - didn't' fix it! I just now rebooted it and it's not working again, and it's not in a case.
Where do you find the option to enable and disable Smart Cover? On the Note 2, it was (apparently) under Security / Device Administrators, but I don't find it there. The only option I could find was in Accessories / S View Cover / Automatic Unlock but changing this setting (including rebooting between settings) hasn't solved it.

Sadly, it was just coincidence that it randomly stopped happening when I enabled and disabled the auto-unlock feature with Smart Cover. My phone started doing it again and I've been unable to repair it. I went to Verizon and they wiped my phone before telling me I'll just have to get it replaced with a refurbished one. Very frustrated. Shame there aren't any AOSP based ROMs yet (like CyanogenMod)-- they'd probably fix it since the cover thing wouldn't be a feature.
Bump.
Anyone know of the APK which would handle S View Cover behavior? If we were to disable that I imagine the problem would go away. I'm still not totally sure of the origin of the issue, but it seems to come from a combination of hardware and software problems. The hardware sensor thinks I have the case on, so the software changes things around. When I call people, I get the S View Cover style call screen. If I change the toggle in accessory settings to automatically unlock the phone when opening the cover, hitting the lock button automatically unlocks the phone as though I had no lockscreen. However, when this is disabled, the lock screen is NOT in the S View Cover form-- it looks stock. This confuses me.
Any ideas from anyone else getting the issue?
Same experience
Just to add my experience as I go. This afternoon I received an error that my SMS data could not be downloaded. Upon sliding down the notifications I was unable to control much. I ripped the majority of my hair out over this.... My pen works flawlessly everywhere though. I eventually discovered it works fine on the bottom half as you described. I have to run to some appointments, but I'll touch back after I try a few things.

Maybe it was caused by the battery insertion or backplate replacement. Perhaps too much pressure or an uneven pressure damaged the circuitry, which is now loose and causing the intermittent error.
Or perhaps it was a static discharge from the battery.
Both cases seem to me to be warrenty items.

Uh oh... I'm rooted and on Verizon. There isn't a way to unroot yet is there?

I thought the only thing necessary to unroot is to flash the stock ROM. The download is linked from the de la Vega post.

I realized had about 3 days left on my Best Buy (elite+) 45 day return. Swapped for a brand new one :good: with no issues!

I have the same issue. I ve been trying to understand why this happened but no luck. I tried everything from updating to reseting. I first noticed it when i took the battery out as well. but the problem kinda fixed it self so i thought the phone has a spaz or something. but when i removed the battery again it happened again.
I took it to the people i bought it from and all they can say is cause there were a couple of scratches on the side of the case that it may not fall under warranty...
i was pretty angry cause its only two months old and the warranty is for a year. and the problem started happening while i was overseas so its been like that for almost a month. hopefully the sales guy is just talk cause its not up to him its just his "opinion" as he put it.
Did they explain to you why this happened? or if this is a common issue?
Hope your new phone is ok
I have this problem intermittently also. Exactly as described above.

I have the solution!
Please. Let me know it worked for you, so people that doesn´t like to post and only read can solve this problem.
The Problem:
The half bottom screen is not working. Including the back button, the option button and the home buttom. they only work if you use the S Pen. Except for the home button. The volumes button do not work either. So the Solution is this..
take off the battery while the phone is on. YES, do not turn off the telephone and the take off the battery. Just take off the battery while the phone is on. It should work. I hope this is the solution.
One more thing. Do not allow your phone to dried up the battery completly so this wont happen again. It is better to turn it off before it dries up.!
Please let me know if it worked for you! I will let you know if this problems start again and if was only an coincidence.Hopes it not!
This tough me a good lesson! never buy a Phone from not trusted retailer, it is better to pay the full price a good store. The people that sold me the phone has a crappy warrraty like if the screen it cellphone is complete off they wont allow me to use the warranty and my phone had faulty battery conecction so it was off. then I paid 100 dollars to be repaired then this problem.
Ok, guys please let us know if it worked so people start saving their phone
Just happened to mine as well
Hard reset didn't work, on the phone with support trying to request a replacement now.
Finally Solved!
Hi
I had same problem
I did everything u said like:
mega wipe and changing rom
custom roms
taking out battery when it's on ( I Did this but I don't know It had any effects on my phone or not!)
taking out external card
But I still Had the Problem
Solution:
But I had a flip cover and I separated that from phone and thanks God,surprisingly It's Fixed and it works like a charm!!! after that I used my original cover and there is no problem till now.
Good Luck
Had the same problem of touch not working.
I tried everything as suggested by the members but my Note 3 is still not working right.Touch not responding all of a sudden in the bottom part of screen after i removed the battery for sim change. Please suggest something.

I haven't gone back to refresh my memory but it seems to me that all these occurrances were caused by removing the back cover. Try removing it and the battery and firmly press on every spot with your thumb. First place the device face down on table padded with a single layer of a blanket. Remove the SIM and SD card and firmly reinsert. Press the back cover on and try it, then return it for warranty if it is still bad.
Frank
I also was faced with this issue today at the start of my morning BUT I FOUND A SOLUTION
I have a Sprint Galaxy Note 3 N900P Stock ROM/ no root, no mods/custom kernels/boots etc...
My device side effects were
The bottom half of my screen was not responding to my fingers,
When you press the Power Button, The options appeared on the top section of the screen instead of being the center
When I press the volume up/down keys, The volume would raise and lower, But the screen that pops up and shows you the volume had increased or decreased didnt show up
Only way to use device was with S Pen
Basically all the issues everyone listed, I had them.
Now my solution; if the issue is a hardware issue.
After dissembling my phone to see what each hardware part of the phone controls, I've come to the conclusion that there was an issue with my USB Dock Connector section of the phone. I uploaded a image pointing which connector controls it. I tried to just wipe and clean it up a bit because mines had some residue on the underneath of it. Then I plugged it back in and it started back to work %100. After I tried restarting it a few times and shaking the device up, it still works; Although I am still going to order a replacement USB Charging Port with flex cable just in case.
fixed.
This is the definitely the hardware problem.
most likely happen if u ever dropped ur phone to the ground ----------- and reboot ur phone some what later time. (can be days or months).
Temp Solution to this problem is...
face down your phone to the flat floor or a table, gently hit the back, strong enough to shock the devide, but not that strong to crack your screen.
one other simple way is to drop your phone to the floor, screen is facing down, from about 30 cm high from the floor.
"simply, hit your device like you used to fix your ur old TV. "
that is just a temp. GL.

Touch Screen Unresponsive: Unknown issue

I'm having several problems with the touch screen on my LG V20 H918:
1.) It does not recognize any of my taps
2.) It seems to think I'm tapping it over and over near the bottom of the screen
3.) I can see a faint image of the previous screen (i.e. the image from the lock screen or the splash screen ghosted in the background)
What I have tried so far:
1.) Took it apart and searched for any possible shortages or debris causing issues
2.) Gave it a thorough cleaning with 99% alcohol to remove any possible unseen debris
3.) Completely recharged battery and attempted to boot again
4.) Factory reset
5.) Purchased and installed a new screen with the digitizer and the works (yet the problems still persist)
Since I've completely replaced the front half of my phone, I know it isn't an issue with the screen itself; there must be an issue with some finer part of the phone that I'm unaware of.
I'm planning on taking this to get repaired, but before I do, I want to see if I can pinpoint the problem myself. If it is something relatively simple, I'd prefer to fix it myself and save some money (I'm already $600 in the hole with this). So I'm looking for any other suggestions or possible insight into this problem. Thank you in advance.

Ive experienced this in very specific scenarios. Only on specific apps and mainly with on web browsers on certain web sites.
Never had any of the other problems though.
Yours would have to be a hardware issue I'd imagine if factory reset didnt help

Right capacitive button not working anymore

Hey guys,
I recently changed the battery on my A2017G, I was very careful not to damage anything and to dismount everything properly.
After putting the phone back together, somehow it didn't want to boot anymore (bootstack screen, and then blinking red led with everything except fastboot).
I figured it was a software issue, since it got solved with a full EDL flash. I still don't know how a battery change could have messed that up.
But now, the right capacitive button (recent apps) doesn't react at all anymore. The home and previous buttons still work perfectly.
I flashed other EDL roms, did a full factory reset, or tried swapping buttons, nothing changes, still the right one isn't reacting.
I carefully checked all the flex cables and connectors inside the phone, they all seem as good as new, no scratch, bend or any other damage.
So my question is, could it be a software issue? Since the EDL full flash is not always doing things correctly...
If it's a hardware issue, I guess I could have messed up the screen flex cable without leaving a mark on it.
But wouldn't that prevent all the buttons to work?
I just want to be sure, before buying a new screen frame (those aren't cheap).
Thanks

You would need to buy a new screen (i.e. around $90) so I say you should start looking into gesture navigation or at least on-screen navbar if nothing works out... the capacitive sensors are affixed to the screen.
I usually had my Back button crap out, but weirdly enough it would start working either after doing a lot of pressure on it or after a reboot.
The capacitive button surely comes through the screen connector, did you check that?

Yes I did, it seems in perfect state.
My theory is that I might have accidentally put some pressure on this flex connector with my plastic tool, while trying to remove the battery.
There are no visible damages, but maybe it's just damaged inside.
Right now I'm using the MiPop, but it's less than ideal...
I wish there was a way to put the on screen softkeys back and disable de hardware ones.
Probably enabling the softkeys isn't that hard, but disabling the hardware ones... ?

Try Fluid Navigation Gestures, I'm currently on another phone with navbar and i'm using that. it's very nice and doesn't use screen space
To enable the navbar you should be on a custom ROM or at least on Chinese MiFavor, I'm not sure if it's possible on G/U systems and I recall not being able to enable the navbar on these
actually I just found that:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/themes/a2017g-navigation-bar-enabler-disabler-t3740817
since I'm also using raystef66's custom rom, I guess it's perfect
