Nearby Device Scanning - Samsung Galaxy S10+ Questions & Answers

Does anyone have nearby device scanning on?
I try to turn it on and it says beacon manager is not installed.
I believe this is similar to Apples AirDrop.
Question is Does it allow someone to send you something without consent?
I did read in the news that a group of school students were in a Museum, and a "xx I won't put what you can guess, sent a certain type of image to a student.
If this is the situation with nearby device scanning, do we want such a thing?

WiFiFoFum - For scanning WIFI areas needed?

Hello,
I have PDA2K (integrated WIFI of course).
I don't have any WIFI at work or home. But I may want to use it
sometimes outdoors in special cafes and internet wifi areas.
I didn't get the chance to use WIFI yet.
From what I undetstand, when WIFI radio is ON, my machine will automatically detect WIFI if areas that have it and I do not even need to do a single thing.
But I came across this program WiFiFoFum. From what I understand
it is a WIFI scanner, so that if I go to urban areas, it can automatically
scan for WIFI zones with public Internet and connect me there.
My question is what's the use if WM2003SE does it automatically already?
I'm looking for an easy and fast solution.
Thanks !

wififofum give you a list of all the AP's near you with there SSID and the SNR (signal strenght in db) and tells you if there encypted etc. the windows one is like XP zero config, it just pops up whenever it finds one and lets you connect to it, with a scanner you are scanning and not connecting, but it may give you the option to connect (perhaps when you find an open AP)
you should check out PocketWinCE, its my fav IMO, also check others like ministumbler but this probly wont work.
scanners (uses legally) are good to walk around your company premises to check for rouge AP's etx, illegally it can be used to find open AP that you could use to access internet email or anything TCP really,
I took a 5 km drive one day..
Windows came up with four different findings for connections..
WiFiFoFum found 24...
That's a 6:1 ratio for WFFF...
And at only a few hundred k.. ..install it and enjoy..

around and about glasgow you find loads and loads of AP's and many are unencrypted and unopened,
check out pocket lan, this goes great with wireless networking, you can map printers, shares, and much much more but i wont go into that as i doubt its gonna be used legally (in most cases)
COOL Thank you all guys for good info.
So what's the verdict for a good program that doesn't require
hours of tweakings and techie games to use ? Something simple
that will get the job done ?
Also are Encryped channels really encrypted? I mean, when surfing from an coffee shop that has WIFI, how can I be sure that my communication is totally encrypted and that no simple software sniffer can get catch all the data? OR maybe even hack my pocket pc ?
I thought about the WiFiFoFum as it's the first one I came accross with, but let's hear your choices for my goals (i.e. probably onle to catch wifi zones on t he streets) + sharing etc... would be nice.. disregard the price of the utility, i'm interested in performance.
Thanks guys!
WiFiFo Fum is the best..
It's simple to use, requires little memory, and can be used to connect to the AP's it finds..
As for encryption..
No, there is no WiFi network in the world that is secure..
The way ethernet is buildt, everyone with a very simple sniffer can download ALL your data stream..
As for security.. With WEP encryption, they will need roughly 4 to 6 GB of data before they can crack it and get any information from the data stream..
Don't be paranoid!
If you wanna check that it works, go stand outside PC world, or McSh1te and get WiFiForUm to do some sniffing.
You are right when you say that it 'should just work' unfortunately, though MS wrote windows mobile so it likely wont! If you dont find any hotspots when you think there should be some try a soft restart (my XDA IIs requires this swapping from work-->home AP, but not for Home-->work AP very odd.
Of course the AP's at PC world/mcsh1te will be btopenzone or thecloud ap's which means that it costs approximately 5 million pounds per hour to use them. But if you can sniff them and get to the appropriate 'give us your c/card page' then you've proven that the device works. Check out the btopenzone/thecloud websites for their login url's.
If they ever start being honest and offering a per MB tarriff at hotspots then I'll start using them.

tha scots knows all!! haha
thanks for all replies.
I downloaded the latest version of the program (0.3.3 i think)
Couldn't understand it or get it to work properly, it seems designed towards network technicians, not some normal pc/pda freak.
several issues:
1) When I go in urban areas, it does show on the Radar many spots, but the machine's own notification of 'Do you want to use xxxx for connecting to internet or work' dialog is interrupting it, and it starts to be a 'concert' of the WiFiFum and the internal network programs making noise.
2) When I did see many spots and tried to connect to some of them in the list screen(Try to tap and hold on the radar screen does ****) , it doesn't do ****. I click on Connect and no other dialog box or anything shows me as connected or something. Very akward program I must say. I also don't see in the list something which says if a spot is private or public (i.e. anonymous internet access allowed). And even not any help file. Seems like no human engineering was made here. I'd rather buy a program and pay nicely if it works rather than getting even a freeware which simply doesn't work.
Any other suggestion for other light programs that can actually work are very welcomed..
thanks again guys.
I think the problem might be between the stylus and the screen..
WiFiFoFum works flawlessly..
And please, forget about using the radar..
It will not work properly until you use TWO wifi cards..
When you see the list, tap and hold any AP to bring up a "Connect" option.
Now, you must remember; WFFF discovers EVERYTHING!
WM2003 only lets you connect to AP's that meets certain demands. (Signal strength is one)
I firmly believe that WFFF is the best software out there, just like NetStumbler is for Win32 environments..
I find it easy to use, and provides all the information I need..
How do you propose that the software can find out if you must pay before using it or not?
I guess this could be solved by connecting, pinging google, disconnecting and marking as "Public"/"Private"...
Though this would slow down the whole process so much, It would not be usable for anything else...
The concert can be disabled by the options panel, or just turning off the sound..
Sadly, we can't disable the WM2003 settings..
Street Hawk tries to connect to google so you know if the connection works.

remove or disable a WiFi network

Whenever i walk around my office, my phone detects all the various WiFi networks in the building. These networks are owned by other businesses and so I will never connect to them.
So, I would like to just remove them from ever showing up in my WiFi network list. I thought that I could 'hide' them, but that does not seem to work. I am not sure what the 'This is a hidden network' checkbox is supposed to do.
So, here is the question: How do I mark a network as 'Hidden' or remove it from view so the phone will disregard the network when it happens to detect it... I know what network I want to use when I am in a certain location... so I dont need it to auto-search for networks.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!

Phone auto connecting to random Wifi access points

All,
My brother has a T-Mobile stock ROM HD 2 and he has the issue where device would just randomly connect to available access points, including a BT OpenZone and a Netgear home router. The worst thing is that if the device is connected to his home [preferred] router, it would all of a sudden connect to the BTOpenZone one and totally disable all activity and actually bring up their registration page, etc. It connects to this [random] Netgear one when he is at his in-laws place.
Just to say that these access points have never previously been added as a preferred network or otherwise.
I used to have a WM device (on to Android now) but never used the WiFi connection, so perhaps I'm missing something obvious (?!)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
This is normal behaviour, if you leave your wifi on. It automatically searches for and tries to connect to any nearby wifi sources. All you have to do is turn wifi off. Just turn it on when you want to use it.
There's a toggle app in one of the stickied threads (cabs & tips)
Must go into the WIFI settings and after couple of Nexts, Uncheck the /Automaticaly Find The Key/ or something like that..also you can go into WIFI options and remove a certain routers setting, just play around a bit with the settings and you will find it.

Surely it's not default behaviour? I vaguely remember that it automatically searches for wifi APs (if the WiFi is on) but never knew it automatcally connected without you asking it to do so, especially if you have never connected to that AP before or previously added it as a preferred network.

I shall have to give that a go and look for that setting.
I have the device in front of me now, but fail to find any settings to disable/prevent this behaviour.

Need someone familiar with services running on the android kernel (cm6 specifically)

So I'm a network admin. I use strong passwords, alphas, numerics, etc.. keep a tight lid on what i install. AVs, spyware scans, etc.. no crap gets on my systems. Its been quite a number of years since I've had to clean out any of my systems.
Moving on...
My boss hands me a mini today from one of her family members - supposedly it has a bug and they didn't want to pay the geeksquad people.
Hearing that it has a bug, I didn't want to put it on the work network so I decided to hook it up to the wifi tether on my phone and download malware bytes via that. I figured - no windows bug is getting on my linux phone. I didn't think about any network-based attacks.
Few hours later, I turn my tether off and go to lunch when I visit my chiro twice a week. I'm laying down getting my back all jazzed up when my phone pops up with a "sign-in" error to my gmail. The password that I knew to be true didn't work. I hop on the bike and rush back to work.
I find all my googles signed out. I attempt to sign back in and get prompted with "suspicious activity detected, please verify". I did so through SMS and was prompted for my OLD password - which worked to my surprise (hacking 101: when you get in, first thing you do is change the pass). I was then prompted to change the pass which I did. I logged in to my gmail and saw a mobile login from an IP in peru. I also found quite a number of NDRs in my inbox (20 or so) with just a URL in it - so it was compromised for spam purposes.
Doing scans on all my systems, no sniffers or keyloggers running. They never had a chance to but just in case, i ran the scans anyway. My only thought is that mini connected to the net through my phone.
I'm thinking that since the phone presents itself as a wireless router and hands out DHCP, whatever local IP the phone sets itself to becomes the default gateway for the mini. If that mini is truly infected (at the moment, I'm not finding anything on it), and it does a network scan type of thing - could it have picked up some SMTP port that our android kernel keeps open? At that point, it wouldn't need my password (which would make sense that my old password worked). I didn't give it much thought at the time but I did think that a few hundred MBs of download was kinda high while the tether was connected.
So thats my question to anyone familiar with the kernel - network wise, are there any open, unsecured (smtp is unsecure in its nature..) services ran by the kernel? Once the phone goes into router mode and gives itself a local ipv4 address and a node (in this case the mini) hops onto the same subnet - those services would be readily accessible to that node.
IE: this bug scanned for port 25 or something.

[Q] network notifications-killing battery

How do I turn off network notifications, I go to advanced tab in wifi, and network notifications is grey and I can't uncheck it. Wifi on is killing the battery, and I turn it off but when I go by any wifi network it automatically turns on. Is there a way to stop this or am I stuck with this also. The more and more I go through this phone, the limitations put in by sharp make me want to get rid of this phone. It's a great phone, but the user limitations are really killing this phone, and I dont see sharp helping to alleviate problems. Sharp is gonna have a hard time in the American market, just for the fact of poor programming and support every website for any root or anything always points to xda, I would think these companies would appreciate xda's input and concerns. Its more about money than the people. Sorry about the rant, but I can't count the times people of xda have emailed sharp and they could give 2 craps about what we want.
You have to have wifi enabled to toggle that option. If wifi is disabled, that field is grayed out. But, with that being said, I have noticed that when I disable the wifi it will re-enable itself after a short period of time. Another issue that I have is sometimes I will get "Avoided poor internet connection" while that option is disabled, and the internet connection in question is in fact functioning properly and bandwidth is exceptional. All the more reason that we need to achieve root and take back control of our devices.
