A2017G revert to stock questions - ZTE Axon 7 Questions & Answers

Good afternoon
I have an A2017G with a mod rom android Pie installed on it and with TWRP 3.2.3-0L v1.3
I'd like to revert it to stock in order to sell it.
I can't access to EDL mode with the keys combo, nor with "reboot edl" in a terminal on the phone, nor with "adb reboot download" on my ubuntu machine.
I can access the system (the rom) fine and also TWRP.
Any advice to fix that, any file to flash from TWRP, without screwing up vendor partition, imei, or whatever?
Thanks.

in twrp for zte there is an option to reboot to EDL

EDL mode has only black screen,
Maybe its online check Qcom bulk or some qualcomm 9008 port in device manager (if its on black screen)

Thanks.
I have sorted it out after digging deeply
Main thing to understand: it's not possible to relock it with nougat oreo or pie installed on it.
So I have:
- Copied all my stuff (pics, vids, books, etc...) to my computer
- Set up a clean W10 on a dedicated machine, without any antivirus crap, installed original qualcomm drivers, ADB toolkit and axon 7 EDL tool on it.
- backed up all partitions with Axon 7 EDL Tool
- from TWRP wiped system, data, storage.
- downgraded to the official original rom (Marshmallow) available on the page EDL
- flashed TWRP on the phone
- installed TWRP_UnlockBootloaderPackage_by_DrakenFX.zip with TWRP
- rebooted to fastboot, then I could finally type from ADB "fastboot oem lock", and that's it!
- The phone rebooted properly, asked me for the country, but since I want to sell it, I didn't go any further.

In fact, as mentioned by Axon 7 EDL toolkit's author in this post https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=78267172&postcount=200
at least with Marshmallow and Nougat (supported by the toolkit), you can first enable fastboot (unlock fastboot) with the toolkit on stock Marshmallow or Nougat, then use "fastboot oem lock" to lock bootloader in bootloader (fastboot) mode.
Remember to use stock ROM (either by flashing with FULL_EDL package, or by using stock recovery applying to official ZTE update.zip, otherwise the phone would be bricked. User data will be erased (equivalent to factory reset).

A2017G Bootloader mode on 7.1.1?

EDIT: Fixed! Big thanks to @S0wL , @bkores , @tamahouse02 and @tron1 for the help. I made a guide to help other people with the same problem:
Guide to get TWRP again HERE
Okay, it seems to me that I messed up kinda badly. The phone is fully operational, but after I got to 7.0 the stock recovery replaced good ol' TWRP... which left me with an unlocked bootloader and an useless recovery. I have no root, and that's pretty much the only thing that matters to me. I downloaded @bkores 's Axon7Toolkit but there is NO way to get fastboot on the damned thing. After the program tries to get to bl mode (I assume adb reboot bootloader?) the ZTE logo flashes and the unlocked BL image appears, then the phone starts as normal.
Same thing with the leaked 7.1.1, no difference.
I tried EDL, recovery, that shady factory test mode thing, no one gives fastboot... Any ideas as to why I can't get there??+
I suspect it may be something related to the OEM unlocking option in the dev options, but it is set to ON and greyed out. so no idea
Try the menu on the boot screen.

Sounds like the issue is with the ROM like it is somehow blocking you from accessing bootloader mode. It's definitely not my toolkit.

Feel the same, 7.1.1 stock recovery is evil, it keep coming back after flash twrp. LOL
Here what I didi to get twrp on 7.1.1:
1. Use axon7tool -w recovery (twrp of couse)
2. Watch closely the cmd, when it said "Successful!","Reboot in 5 second" - unplug your phone
3. Use Volume Up + Power to get to recovery (twrp)
4. Mount > Mount System (dont check read only)
5. Flash something - I don't know - But I get the feeling that it stop stock recovery coming back - I personally flash Chinese Modem (because I have to ))
6. Reboot system
@bkores Yeah I'm pretty sure it's not your toolkit since I can't access it even with key comb, adb, option on the unl bl page...
@lafester Nope, tried many times. It just boots to normal whenever I select fastboot
@tamahouse02 Well I believe that should work, but I can't get axon7tool not to crash... I'll keep trying, maybe it's a driver or sth.

Have you restart after install zadig driver?
1. From system: adb reboot edl
2. Install zadig driver
3. Hold "Volume Up + Power"
4. Enter system again: adb reboot edl
5. axon7tool -w recovery

yes, like 4 times already. I even used the stock Qualcomm COM3 drivers... no dice.
the thing is that I had to do the same when I did the stuff on android 6 and it worked after some time. I even wrote the procedure on another thread xd

Not same my axon7tool. I use this https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/development/axon7tool-flash-backup-boot-recovery-t3514254
Bootloader Mode is Disable/strip in G variant, and if this is how ZTE is headed to future updates it seems like U will have a Disable Bootloader Mode as well.
If you guy can rollback to MM , you can Unlock there using @bkores tool.

I was thinking about that, but does mifavor let you roll back from an SD update? I'll try later, but i doubt it.
Besides from that is there any way to flash stuff from the stock recovery? It tells me that ZIPs have to be signed only

Official 3.0.4.1
@tamahouse02
The latest "official" TWRP is at TWRP site https://twrp.me/devices/zteaxon7.html , version 3.1.0-0.
Is there any problem using it instead of the previous "official" 3.0.4.1 ?
Edit: I also read on TWRP site:
"Note many devices will replace your custom recovery automatically during first boot. To prevent this, use Google to find the proper key combo to enter recovery. After typing fastboot reboot, hold the key combo and boot to TWRP. Once TWRP is booted, TWRP will patch the stock ROM to prevent the stock ROM from replacing TWRP. If you don't follow this step, you will have to repeat the install."
This is in sync with your information requiring to reboot immediately to TWRP (step 2 and 3).

I use 3.0.4.1 because I flash plenty things before without any issue, so I keep using it.
After write recovery by axon7tool, it's reboot automatically and override the recovery, that why I have to unplug to stop the reboot, and also flash all I can - fortunaeally it also stop recovery be overrided
@tamahouse02 sorry to ask, but is the a7tool of the link a fixed version? how does it differ from the one i have?
I've been in the same situation like you @Choose an username... Updated to nougat on G model and I had not bootloader. This is what I did :
1. Downloaded the tool from here https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/development/tool-axon7toolkit-t3573108
2. Installed the driver using the install driver option that you can choose once you connect you phone to your computer
3. Use the tool to perform the unlock bootloader command again even though you have unlocked it before
4. Use the tool to install twrp, it will boot the phone in twrp
5. Flash Supersu before you boot the system first time after flashing twrp
5. Install whatever version of android want after
@S0wL Funny, I had to use Zadig to make it work. I'll try r n, thx

Corrupted recovery, no o/s, what to do now?

I have a Axon 7 A2017U, bootloader unlocked. My recovery is corrupted after attempting to flash a older version of TWRP in recovery. I can no longer reboot into TWRP via recovery, it hangs at the ZTE powered by screen. I can't boot into the o/s, it too was corrupted while attempting to restore to stock using the DrakenFX's guide.
Booting into fastboot is a no go either, it just hangs at bootloader screen.
Any suggestions on where to go from here or how to fix the corrupted recovery?
You need to go into EDL mode and use MiFlash and flash a back to stock package. You can find a package here: https://androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=160532
Hello maybe i have same problem here. I have A2017G and maybe i have only woked unlocked bootloader. I dont think my EDL is working becouse i cant connect with ADB. Dont have any acces to recovery... i messed up step by step remember.
1. downloaded toolkit and woked fine - 2 installed drivers and working fine with EDL. 3 unlocked with no problems , 4 flashed TWRP with no problems and then i wanted to install lineage os. Downloaded last version lineage , and google apps and one file "A2017G_N_Modem.zip" and put all 3 files on my SD card. I wipe everything and then first installed modem file OK, but on second try with Lineage OS i have any errors and i just cant continue. After this i wanted to go back to original OS and i just locked my bootloader with axon toolkit and after restart i have acces only to Unlocked Bootloader. tryed everithing with axon7toolkit but nothing working. If i try to EDL mode when press volumeUP+volumeDOWN+power my phone have black screen and i thing is powered OFF.
OMFG i just typed "fastboot oem unlock" 5-6 time when i started phone to my bootloaders and now it unlocked and have acces to my TWRP.

Thanks, I flashed it with A2017U_B19-NOUGAT_FULL_EDL and was able to flashed twrp recovery. I was hoping the o/s would be fixed too but I get this error message as soon as o/s load "settings keeps stopping, close app". It appears it's a bad or incorrect stock file. I had to format data in TWRP recovery as the drive was encrypted. So now i'm back at square one.
Bad o/s but working recovery, so I attempted to flash these files to get back to stock but was unsuccessful. It would flash halfway and then just restarts and hung at the bootloader unlock screen.
A2017UV1.0.0B29_RollBackModded.zip
A2017UV1.1.0B32_bootstack_by_DrakenFX.zip
A2017UV1.1.0B32_StockSystem_by_DrakenFX.zip
Am I on the right track? Or should I be flashing with a different os variant?

So you didn't read all of the hurdles and warnings about locking the bootloader with non-stock firmware?
Plus you also didn't find out about the Universal Bootloader? Did you even read the installation steps???
You had an error 7, which is that you forgot to install the Universal Bootloader. Do so this time.
EDL has nothing to do with ADB. You can access it with the phone completely off... (volume up and down, and insert usb)

ZTE Axon 7 A2017G Bootloader not booting

I was going through the usual steps of flashing lineage 14.1 to my Axon 7.
In one of the guides i was following it recommended downgrading to android marshmallow before flashing lineage, which i did.
I had TWRP installed however this got removed when i flashed the stock marshmallow file which included stock recovery.
However, i cant get it to boot into fastboot, i tried, "adb reboot fastboot", and tried the manual method by holding down the power and + vol.
When it reboot it just skips fastboot and just boots normally
I'm not sure what is wrong, whether the bootloader is corrupt or it is completely missing.
I'm not sure how i can flash a new bootloader if i can't use fastboot. If there is a piece of software out there that can flash without fastboot i would be thankful for a pointer.

You got stuff wrong. I don't know if 'reboot fastboot' works, but it's actually "reboot bootloader". Plus they got rid of it since Marshmallow, and you have to install it if you want it.
Use EDL and install TWRP with it (EDL Tool by djkuz , or axon7tool by tennear). Don't even reflash the bootloader

Relocking the bootloader and returning to stock ROM

Hey guys, I was planning on sending my Axon 7 in to get a new battery since I'm going to be keeping this for a very long time(until its successor maybe) and I was wondering if there is a way to relock the bootloader to do so?
Here's my original plan to do so:
• Repartition to my original GPT from treble
• Wipe everything (format data, clean internal storage)
• put it into EDL mode and flash B19 with MIFlash(only one with fastboot commands)
• Try the procedure by going into developer options, enable OEM unlock, reboot to fastboot mode, type in "fastboot oem lock"
• Profit?
I was just thinking about doing this earlier today for the same reason, and while I am no expert, that was the same thought process I was going by for returning to full stock. Although someone more experienced, such as @Oki, might be able to provide a more confident answer to if this is the best/proper way.

No need for step 1. Flashing a Full EDL package of a stock rom will repartition the GPT to the stock configuration.

I am planning to complete the unlock / restore to stock guide by including the relock procedure. For doing so I believe the best method is:
1. Full format of data and cache partitions to EXT4
2. Flash The factory ROM. This is Android M ROM
3. Flash patched fastboot for Android M (as if you were going to unlock)
4. Boot the system, enable developers menu, and in that menu enable OEM unlocking and USB debugging options.
5. in your computer prompt type adb reboot bootloader
6. in your computer write fastboot devices to ensure it is in fastboot mode.
7. Type fastboot lock or fastboot oem lock or fastboot oem lock-go. I do not remember the exact command right now but one of them will be recognized.
8. Reflash the same EDL package to have a locked Axon 7 with the original firmware.
9. Enter stock recovery (VolUp+Power) and do a factory reset.

You can use N if you want. The problem with N is the removal of edl boot using the key combo. It is very useful in case something fails. Booting edl mode using the button combo helps you recover it easily.

I recall B19 has the EDL combo still intact when I would use it. I'll see if I can try that out in a few days, but I'll definitely keep that in mind if something goes wrong.

I might be having to do this as my phone as of last night will not connect to mobile networks at all suddenly and for seemingly no reason.
Could I do the full wipe, reboot to fastboot from recovery, then do the relock (while I still have easy access to it), then since I'll still have a bootstack with ELD button combo installed, use MiFlash to flash B35 from djkuz's edl tool thread? If not, by following this list should I flash B29 which is the oldest M firmware from his thread had they already removed fastboot with that one?

I ended up relocking the bootloader by doing the following
1. Repartition the vendor if you are running treble and backup your internal storage
2. Wipe the device in Twrp by Data, dalvik cache, System ,etc
3. Reboot into EDL mode, open MiFlash and flash the B19 EDL zip(don't flash TWRP afterwards for it to have the stock recovery)
4. Unplug, wait 2-3 seconds, reboot by holding the power button and get past the setup from Mifavor.
5. Go into developers mode and enable USB debugging(your phone should still be unlocked, so the option to enable oem unlocking should be greyed out).
6. Reboot into the bootloader and plug it in to the computer
7. Pull up your command prompt from your computer, make sure you have ADB and fastboot drivers installed, and make sure you put in "fastboot devices"
8. If it shows up, then type "fastboot oem lock" and your phone will go black and reboot to recovery for it to wipe your internal storage. After that is completed, you should be back to a locked bootloader on B19 firmware. If you want to upgrade to B35, you can perform the software upgrade in the settings to get there.

a2017g downgrading from oreo to naugat then to marshmallow (want unloack bootloader)

The instructions to downgrade to Nougat are simple, and do-able via the EDL Tool.
It's not possible to use the EDL Tool on Linux, so I'd recommend finding a Windows machine.
•Download the tool, and extract to the root of your C:\ drive as instructed in the thread
•Download the B12_Nougat_A2017G_FullEDL package from the EDL Tool thread, and extract all the files to the flash/full folder of the tool
• On your device, enable USB Debugging and OEM Unlocking from the developer settings
• Connect your device, and open the tool. It will prompt you and then automatically reboot the phone into EDL mode.
• Select 'Flash' and then 'Full' and wait for the flashing to finish.
• It will prompt to reboot your phone, after which you'll find it is now running Nougat.
From there, you can go back to Settings and enable USB Debugging and OEM Unlocking from the developer settings once more, and reconnect your device and open the tool. This time, select 'Unlock' and 'unlock bootloader'.
Once the bootloader is unlocked, follow the instructions in the LineageOS 16 thread, and flash the latest version of twrp (can also be done via the tool), universal bootstack, modem, and finally ROM/GApps/Magisk as needed.

You need to flash TWRP initially with the EDL Tool aswell. LineageOS / other ROM additions such as GApps and Magisk are flashed via TWRP, which is the recovery on the device and doesn't require a computer.
The phone shouldn't get stuck on EDL mode, but if it does - no need to worry. You can just let the battery drain which can take a few hours and then plug your phone back into your computer and try the tool again.
