UNLOCK YOUR BOOTLOADER
THIS IS FOR PURE VERSION ONLY
NOTE: Unlocking the bootloader will Wipe/ factory reset your device, and will delete all personal data from your device such as apps, photos, messages, and settings.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Make sure to take a backup of your entire device data.
Download the Android SDK OR Download the Minimal ADB and Fastboot
Install the latest Motorola USB Drivers on your desktop. Download here.
Put your device in fastboot mode (power off, then press the power and volume down buttons simultaneously).
Open Command Prompt on androidsdk/platform-tools/ (Hold Shift and right click and press open command window here)
Connect your Phone to PC
Type this in the CMD prompt window - fastboot oem get_unlock_data
You will get a return string. Copy it. [Right Click-Mark- Mark the text by pressing the shift key-Now press Ctrl+C]
Paste all the lines together in a notepad. Remove the empty spaces.
Now go to the Motorola Site.Sign in using your Google account or Motorola ID. Scroll down the page and paste the copied string in the field at step #6. Then click on ‘Can my device be unlocked?’, after which a "REQUEST UNLOCK KEY" button will appear at the bottom of page.
To get your unlock key, select the ‘I Agree’ option. Note: You will receive an email with your Unlock Key at the email address you used to log in there.
Important – Copy the 20-character key that Motorola sent you via email. Make sure your device is connected.
Then in CMD type: fastboot devices (To check your device is connected)
Then type: fastboot oem unlock UNIQUE_KEY
NOTE: In above command, replace the word ‘UNIQUE_KEY’ with the unlock code that you got via email. Then hit enter and the unlocking process should begin. Wait for a while and soon you’ll see ‘Bootloader Unlocked’ warning on your Moto X(2014).
To relock the bootloader:
Go to Fastboot and give the command fastboot oem lock
You can always appreciate my work by pressing the Thanks Button.:good:
Good Day
[SIZE=+1]Q1:How to remove the unlocked bootloader message? [/SIZE]
Download the zip.
Extract all the files
Reboot to fastboot mode (power + vol down)
Now open cmd and use cd command to go to the directory where you placed the file.
Now Type the command: fastboot flash logo logo.bin
Reboot from the recovery (use vol up to select and vol down to navigate)
Now your bootlogo should be restored back to the normal version
Thanks Helvio88 for the zip
I assume this is for Pure version only.

If a good developer finds a way to unofficially unlock it or motorola gives us an official way to unlock maybe after a year. But I can't say for sure

Hello, the last Bootloader Unlock i did was with Moto X 2013, in order to root it. Then i switch to Galaxy S5 and Sony Z2, both didnt need the Bootloader unlocking, so i kinda forgot what the unlocking is for. Is it to install CWM or TWRP and install custom roms ? I just need rooting ,so i think there isn't one right?
Thanks.

A few questions:
1) I thought Pure had an unlocked bootloader, or is it "unlockable"?
2) Any reason not to do this on day 1 since it wipes the device? Moto has indicated unlocking the bootloader does not void your warranty on Pure.

It's unlockable. It doesn't come unlocked. The phone comes carrier unlocked.

That would entirely depend on if they consider the Pure Edition a Developer Edition.
The Legal Agreement and Warning on the unlock page still states as follows:
(5) THE FOLLOWING APPLIES TO ALL UNLOCKED DEVICES EXCEPT FOR DEVELOPER EDITION DEVICES. BY OBTAINING THE UNLOCK CODE FOR THIS DEVICE, IRRESPECTIVE OF WHETHER THE DEVICE'S BOOTLOADER IS SUBSEQUENTLY UNLOCKED OR ITS SOFTWARE OR OPERATING SYSTEM IS MODIFIED, USER AGREES TO WAIVE AND VOID ALL WARRANTIES THAT MAY HAVE BEEN PROVIDED BY MOTOROLA, BOTH EXPRESS AND IMPLIED, INCLUDING ANY WRITTEN WARRANTY THAT ACCOMPANIED THE DEVICE AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE OR DELIVERY, AND AGREES THAT ANY RIGHTS OR REMEDIES PROVIDED BY SUCH A WARRANTY ARE NULL AND VOID. MOTOROLA MAKES NO WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND AND DISCLAIMS ALL WARRANTIES OF EVERY KIND, EXPRESS, IMPLIED, OR STATUTORY, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE IN CONNECTION WITH AN UNLOCKED DEVICE. USER ACKNOWLEDGES AND AGREES THAT ALL SUCH WARRANTIES ARE HEREBY EXCLUDED AND THAT ALL UNLOCKED DEVICES ARE PROVIDED "AS IS," WITH NO WARRANTY OF ANY KIND;

So even if they did SAY that, with the wording of the agreement, technically they wouldn't have to honor it until they add Pure Edition into that agreement.
I believe I heard the same somewhere as well about it not voiding the warranty, but I haven't been able to locate it.

I've done this (or some variation) for every phone that needed it the second they came out of the box. It's easier if you do it before you mess with the phone at all since you'll have to start over anyhow.
So I just chatted with a support person, and after asking the question 4 different ways, I got her to say
Me: So I will maintain my warranty then if I unlock it?
Agent: Yes. The pure edition is unlock. Let's say it's like a developer edition.

If you leave it unlocked after rooting then it can make your phone more susceptible to localised threats like someone stealing your phone and re-purposing it or stealing your data from it directly.
But for many the reward outweighs the risks and there are ways to mitigate.
Trying to unlock Moto X Play on Linux by using "fastboot oem get_unlock_data", but it just says waiting for device. I ran "adb devices" and also enable "Allow unlocking device" in the Developer menu. Am I missing something?
I'm not sure if this is going to end up as a fix or a cautionary tale, but here goes.
Was looking to root my g4, so I successfully unlocked the bootloader & installed TWRP using this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4-plus/how-to/guide-newbie-resource-thread-t3386584
Things were going pretty good there, but when I tried to install the SU image through TWRP, the phone wouldn't boot.
Naturally, I didn't do a backup of the stock state of the phone (BECAUSE I'M AN IDIOT!) so I figured, what the hell, might as well install cyanogen mod, and see what that's all about. There's a cyanogenmod beta for the G4+. It went on smooth through the TWRP installer and was behaving ok, but wouldn't see the SIM. I check the IMEI number and the phone does not have a value set, just blank space.
I then tried to re flash stock firmware on the phone, thinking that might restore the IMEI.
It was a bear to get on there, but I was pretty proud of myself when it booted.
Trouble is: still no IMEI number. Also no wifi and it can't see the SIM card (probably because no IMEI number).
So, I figured I'd go back to the cyanogenmod, and see if I could somehow trick it into an IMEI number, BUT! re-loading the firmware re-locked the bootloader.
I went through the unlock process at motorola again, but this time she won't unlock. The console is throwing me
Code:
...
(bootloader) invalid boot state
OKAY [ 0.005s]
.
So, from here, I don't know where to go. Try re-flashing cyanogenmod on it manually I guess, but I don't know if that will work with the bootloader perpetually locked.
Can anyone help me sort this out?
Please?

I flashed the stock rom on manually from the terminal using fastboot. Evidently: it isn't the right version. After careful inspection, it seems like I loaded the Indian / Asian version, whereas my device is the Canadian version.
Unfortunately, the Canadian stock firmware is still listed as a work in progress.
And the file names are confusing as hell. My device model is xt1643 but my stock ROM doesn't even mention 1643 in the file name. What's your model number?

Did you turn on unlock bootloader option in Dev settings ?
W0000000ooooooooooooooooooHooooooo00000000000000000000000000!!!:victory:
We're back in business, kids!
Found the stock rom for the Canadian Retail build (not locked to carrier) here: https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/athene/official/RETCA/
It took forever to download, but once it showed up, I flashed it on with fastboot, fired 'er up, and it's the same old stock G4 with working wifi, that can see the SIM & Connect to the network, complete with IMEI number AND - I believe - an unlocked bootloader.... at least I get the unlocked bootloader warning screen on boot.
Varun: I saw your message when I was getting set to flash the firmware on and got set to put my palm through my head. You're right: it could have been just the switch in developer options. But I checked and it was on.
Maybe the mods can add that firmware to the big firmware download links post.
Now, you'd think that having just brought this thing back from the dead I'd leave well enough alone and quit fiddling with this thing, but...
Maybe the owner of the newbie thread should add a post with "take a backup through twrp"

try this strange trick, I'm not sure it will work, it might boot loop, but you can always just reflash the rom
download the STOCK oem.img from STOCK amazon firnware from https://www.filefactory.com/folder/c6cdedc45a775d27 (harpia amazon)
And then prepare to flash it (enter fastboot mode, put oem.img in mfastboot folder, open cmd)
type "mfastboot flash oem oem.img" but DO NOT press enter
then, start holding down the power button on your phone
about 2 seconds later, press enter on PC.
If all goes well, right after computer says "writing oem..." phone will reboot and there will be totally blank oem partition!

Let me know with a mention or quote or pm or something if you guys are successful. All of the other methods like using adb to hide com.amazon.phoenix failed for me as well as unlocking the bootloader. I made the mistake of assuming that a XT1607 is a XT1607 is a XT1607 and it didn't matter who you bought it from, so I went with the $99 option figuring if it had a locked bootloader, it would have a different model number (as is the case with LG and HTC phones) so if this method doesn't work, I'm going to contact Amazon to do an exchange for the version without ads and pay the difference.

It's not. And that's what burns me up. Every other manufacturer will at least increment the model number to differentiate between one that can unlock the bootloader and one that cannot. With the XT1607, it's the model *name* rather than the model number. The moto g4 play and the moto g4 play prime exclusive edition (that's ours).
I'm using that as my basis for an attempt to talk my way into an unlock code for my bootloader because I bought the Amazon prime version under the assumption that I'd be able to unlock the bootloader and root the device, since the model number is the same. Now I have to return my phone, be without a phone while it's shipped back, wait for the refund to clear, buy the same damn phone for $50 more, wait for it to be shipped out, and deal with Sprint to get the new one activated. All because it's the only carrier unlocked cdma phone that isn't like $400.

no de bloat
So is there no way for de bloat and ad removal for the amazon moto g4 play XT1607?!?!?
I got two other stock files
XT1607_HARPIA_RETUS_MPI24.241-2.35-1_cid50_subsidy-DEFAULT_regulatory-DEFAULT_CFC.xml.zip
XT1607_HARPIA_CCAWS_MPI24.241-2.35_cid50_subsidy-CCAWS_regulatory-DEFAULT_CFC.xml.zip
The problem I'm having is when I try to flash an oem.img from one of the other phones I get a validation check error and the phone fails.
If this actually works, I just need to know how to bypass the validation check. Maybe I'm on the wrong path and will end up bricking my phone.
But looking at the other G4 ad removal thread, this is basically what they did. They flash a stock Moto G4 oem.img file and that file doesn't contain the bloat.

Hello all! First post here so if I out this in the wrong section, or do the pst wrong, then feel free to correct me.
I am trying to root my old phone, which is a Moto e4. I tried rooting with mutiple sources (Using a computer) but all of them failed. I concluded through google searches that one reason this may be happening is because the bootloader is still locked, so I started on that.
I got to the command promt, and can locate and identify the device, but when I run the command to unlock the bootloader and get the code for the motorola website, (fastboot oem unlock, and some variations of this command, all the same result.) When I do this, I get the results that I should get, but where the code should be, it says not found. I have my OEM unclokcing checked in Deve settings, and USB debugging is on as well. I am at school right now, so unfornatly I cannot give information on the model number, or anything like that, but I can respond to questions when I can. If I don't even need to unlock the bootloader on the moto e4 to root, then all the better, but I am fine with going through the trouble of unlokcing the bootloader!
Thanks,
Eriith
