Im looking to upgrade from a Nexus 6 to either a 6P or Mate 8. I just found this phone this morning and looks interesting. What do you think of this phone vs the 6P? Thanks for your opinions.
I have both. I came from a nexus 6. They're both great phones. My only sadness with this phone is lack of aosp or cm ROMs. As much as I really hate that, I can't put this phone down. Battery life with heavy use I'm still putting down average 6-7 hours screen on time. The 6p is pretty solid of a phone too but I'll be giving it to my gf since the mate 8 serves more than enough of its purpose.
Hopefully one day maybe we get an aosp ROM

i would like an aosp/CM rom as well. my problem with my N6 is battery life. i heard the 6P is better and seems like this is even better than that. i have been reading on here about issues people have been having with the phone being in chinese and issues with notifications and such. guess i need to decide if the lack of aosp with the other issues will be something i can live with for now.
No problems with notification for me and no Chinese problems either. People probably bought a Chinese model and are complaining about Chinese being on it. Go figure. And also coming from a nexus 6 I only have up due to screen being broken and unable to repair it at the moment, this fits even better in hand than the nexus 6. Solid as hell. Like I said, my only complaint is lack of aosp or cm ROMs. So far I'm able to live with it. If it gets too much, I'll serve my nexus 6 back to the States for repair. Not necessary though considering the hell of an upgrade this phone is
well, most issues and complaints here actually arise because people are too lazy to read as for custom roms, the ball started rolling on that we already have twrp, unlocked bootloader, decrypted boot image and root capability. first dev is also already working on a custom rom, so im pretty optimistic for the near future
sure, development will never get as expansive as with the nexus 6P, but hey, its a nexus
u gotta decide whats important to you: mate 8 trumps everything concerning cpu performance (even upcoming s820 according to benches thus far) and battery life. if gpu performance is important to you though, the 6P is definitely more performant, although not massively due to the higher screen resolution vs. the mate 8.
another important point: screen vs body ratio! iphone 6s plus / nexus 6p / mate 8 are all the same size, give or take 1-2mm. difference being:
iphone 5.5 inch display
nexus 5.7 inch display
mate 8 friggin 6 inch display
coming from the nexus 6 ull be surprised to have such a "small" device sport the same screen size at way smaller dimensions
and i can say the screen is super sharp, has great colors and is briiiight as heck, everything u can want in a good screen
just my 2c on the matter...

Another 2 plus points for the Mate 8 that people don't give much importance but for me are relevant are the fm radio and sd card slot.
yes! i was pleasantly surprised to see the fm radio functionality
I have both and hands down the mate 8 is the winner. I got the mocha brown 64GB 4GB ram and it flies. Had notification issues with the Chinese Rom so I just converted to international and now no problems. I listen to a lot of music and this goes a lot louder and quality is much clearer. Camera seems good but I'll be testing it more over the next few days. 6p is going on eBay.

Hey!
I've sold my Note 7 and I am looking to buy a new one the Nexus 6p or the Pixel XL.
considering the battery life!
another question I know the Nexus 6P come with 3GB of RAM while the Pixel XL come with 4GB.
Is there a big difference?
thanks,
Can't really compare the battery lives of these devices since the Pixel XL isn't out yet. It does have a bigger batter than the 6p though, so it might have better battery life. Too soon to tell though.
Tbh I doubt there is going to be much difference between the two in terms of eveyday performance! I'm using my nexus 6P now and is still super smooth and rapid at loading things. The only thing you will get with the Pixel XL is google assistant out of the box, and guaranteed updates for 2+years. However devs are currently working on porting google assistant to the 6p.
My view is you can get the 6p for probably £300 new. Or you can get the XL for £719 new. Do you think that the google assistant is worth £419?

It doesn't have a bigger battery. It has the exact same battery size 3450 mAh. What it does have is a smaller screen and a more efficient SOC. Google says battery life is 40% better but we will have to wait for actual reviews.
It's all about the money. The 6P costs half the price of the Pixel.
if you dont care about the front facing speakers and the 5.7' screen then get the pixel xl (but this will cost you alot more).
i have purchased my 6p only some month ago, and i am loving every bit of it, the 3gb ram is good enough , the front facing speakers sound awesome and the screen is beautiful.
plus there is nougat, i have tried Nougat on it and holy smokes it is so snappy, felt 2-4x snappier than Marshmallow, but i am back on marshmallow for now because i am waiting for the custom roms to put more features in their Nougat builds.
you honestly cant go wrong with either of these phones, but if your budget is low , even if it is not you cannot go wrong with a 6p, it is an amaaazing phone.
i knew the Pixel XL was coming, but when i found out that it had no front facing speakers and a 5.5' screen it was already set what phone i was gonna get, and that was the 6p.
and i love my 6p <3
edit: about your battery life worries, the 6p will easily get you 4-6hours of screen on time and that is great.
you wont get much more out of the pixel xl, maybe 10% more.

Had my 6P for a year.
No issues with BT.
I'd go with the 6P anyday, as you CAN BUY TWO 6P'S for the price of XL.
But, I think Google will do everything to bury the Nexus sooner, so you're more future-safe with the XL.
I like the 6P more because of the better looking design, bigger screen, thickness, stereo speakers and it just seems it's better built by what I've seen on YT.
And it's twice cheaper.
6P or bust! Unless, u like the XL fewnewest features and the price...
Hi I'm looking to change my pixel 2 xl cause of performance issues alot of lag and delay
I was thinking of Mate Pro 20 but I changed my mind after reading honest review on XDA-Developers
Is it better choice to get one plus 6t instead
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
I got a 2xl and waiting for my 6t, which will be delivered tomorrow. Considered the pixel 3 but it's just a rerocked 2
I'm coming from a pixel 2xl. I was looking for something new because i started to feel apps were closing out too fast and reloading too often.
I started adding more apps. Mostly security camera and home automation apps. I wanted to see if having more RAM would help. I didn't even have any interest in the pixel 3 since they didn't upgrade the RAM
So far I've been pleased. Apps stay open longer but it seems it takes awhile for the phone to know which apps you use the most.
Battery life has been noticeably better but not by much
In screen fingerprint scanner isn't as fast as the pixel but the face unlock on the op6t is blazing.
I miss AOD and I'm surprised how often i use the squeeze for Google Assistant.
OnePlus gestures blows away both of Android navigation options. I'm happy to have the extra screen space.
Surprised how well the OnePlus screen compares to the pixel. There are more color options to adjust for your liking and the OnePlus seems to get a tad brighter. The pixel looks sharper on higher res content but barely and only if you stare.
OnePlus camera is okay. I'm not a huge picture person so the OnePlus is passable for me.
Pixel feels lighter and is easier to hold. Less fingerprints because of the material on the back of the pixel.
Right now I've factory reset the pixel to see if i can recover the performance. I bet it will be smooth again.
Hope this helps

I have Pixel 2 as well and will be getting OP 6T in couple of days... 6T seems to be a upgrade almost all cases except Camera.. well we have Gcam port for that
Coming from the pixel 2xl. The 3xls notch is disgusting compared with the price of the 3xl brining not a whole lot of new things make the 3xl a definite pass. It's unfortunate that this was the fastest phone I've ever had but in a year I've reset it 4 times due to extreme lagging and slowdown recently. Battery life dropped by almost half as well. The only redeeming quality is the camera but I am willing to give that up for the time being.

Yes. It's just a repost of the one from the 6 subforum.
Functionality is the same on the 6. Same things work, and same things don't work.
We can only use the 6.1 mods. Older 5.x versions won't connect to the camera on our phones.
Had really hoped hopes with htc u11 . 1st had a huge bug with Bluetooth/wifi that would boot loop my phone... Not only did htc blame me but I had to pay to replace it twice...2 the stance HTC and all big tech company have with development on their phones.
I'm moving back to OnePlus... I had the 1 and 3 going to wait till 7 comes out later this year... Anyone else leave HTC if so to what company what phone?
I do not have issues with WiFi nor Bluetooth. Both work pretty well for me.
I am not leaving htc. I have had the s8, v30 and op6. The result is that every time I switched back to the u11 I realized how smooth, simple and customizable is sense home and the great quality of the u11 (display, sound, construction, camera...). Oh, edge sense is a great feature that I can not live without.
Right now there is no other device that have all the specs I look for. Maybe the u12+.
Well experience with HTC phones had been good so far. Especially HTC U11 is a great device I am having no such issues.
For others I can tell about Samsung phones since I am personally using Note 8. Samsung has come a long way their software system it is lighter now and less buggier. Hardware always has been good on Samsung.
I'm leaving HTC this year for sure, after complete 2 years with me. No pie so far for u11, among others reasons like I've cracked my screen, paid to HTC themselves to fix, and after that there's no more warranty for the phone and they don't guarantee it stills water resistant.
The u11 is not bad, not at all. Suppresses all my needs, but with this support is complicated.

I've had my U11 since June 2017. It followed a ZTE Axon 7, which followed an HTC 10. I baby the U11 and have been very careful with handling it. I'll keep it until the day I accidentally break it. As others have said, the camera, sound and Edge Sense are what makes this phone so special. Plus, there's nothing as sexy as the Sapphire Blue! Pie or no Pie, it's not a deal breaker for me. Phones nowadays are expensive enough that they're not disposable, - better off holding on to what you have until it doesn't work anymore. HOWEVER, for the sake of answering the question, IF I was going to move on from HTC, I'd get a Galaxy S9 Plus.
Sent from my HTC U11 using Tapatalk
I had the HTC 10 before my U11 and thought it was better audio quality, for a start it has a HEADPHONE SOCKET......can you hear me HTC!
USB-C & no headphone socket is really BAD.
My next phone will be OnePlus, had a One and it was brilliant....just shame about no SD-CARD SOCKET....can you hear me OnePlus!
Just wish someone would make a phone that's half decent like these and have SD-Card socket AND headphone socket.
ps. OnePlus are really EASY to re-flash.
Went for pixel 2 xl though still have U11
Second hand U11 is half the price of used Pixel 2 xl in UK which make it good bargain
I ordered a Oneplus 7 pro this weekend and when it comes later this week it will replace my HTC U11. It's been a great device, but the lack of updates has been very disappointing and I might have desided to buy a different phone if I had known HTC's fate ahead of time.
Two years later, my HTC is still going strong, has a better camera (especially combined with the Google Camera ports) than most phones out there.
Only thing that could be a little better is battery life.
I'll wait for a Pixel with multiple camera lenses and 5G connectivity before upgrading this phone - unless the battery performance deteriorates a lot over the coming year.
Well even though the OnePlus 7 Pro is the best Android handset in 2019 thus far, I think I'll instead switch to Pixel 4, maybe Pixel 4XL. There are two reasons: Pixel will have fast updates and less compromises in comparison to OnePlus, as well as the much better camera.

I purchased the Pixel 3a XL because it was so cheap and i have been wanting to feel the Pixel experience since i passed up the 2XL for the U11. This 3a is a great phone. I still find my self using the U11 on WiFi though because it has been an awesome phone. What can i say....been with HTC since the thunderbolt. Pixel experience has been great so far, and unless HTC can shows signs of life i will be taking a serious look at the Pixel 4.
My OP7P turned up yesterday... Seems like quite a nice device. I went the overkill version, 12gb/256gb.
In the hand, its a little heavier and taller than the U11. Camera doesnt compare to the U11 in my opinion (not on stock OP, GCam U11)
Speed! WOW! Not a single slow down for 2 days. But then again, my 6gb U11 was fast enough.
This phone ****s on the P3XL and the Mate 20 Pro which I returned to go back the U11. I dont think ill be returning the OP7.
I dont have the touch screen issues, but im not going to try installing CPU-z to check. (if I have them, im not noticing it so dont want to be looking for it if its there)
If you are happy with the U11 on Lineage or RR etc, then dont bother updating. Its really not that big of an improvement or difference from OOS.
I am getting double the SOT though, so maybe to some it is. Im always near a charger so no issue for me

Thanks for the feedback. Im fighting the update urge within myself ?. Not to op7p but op7 or zenfone 6, or poco f2.
Wrt to camera, only pixel and huawei p30pro is better. Other than that no one can touch u11(gcam) not even s10+. I have used s10+ both EX and SD versions extensively as my wife & bro has it.
I only do web surfing and youtube , social media and NO gaming at all. With this i get 7hrs SOT on wifi and 5.5-6hrs in wifi+lte.
Are you saying it will approx double from u11 with op7p ?
For my usage, high end SOC is not necessary as i dont game at all. However display, camera and battery, good dev support is high on priority. Pixel 3axl in india has been once again insanely priced.
Decisions, decisions ...

For the past 2 days, I've been getting 8 hours of sot. I don't game and probably have similar usage to your description. I have turned the screen to 60hz and 1080p today to see what the difference is. I'd probably look at the op7 over the others. Although, Xiaomi mi9t looks like it would be a contender too.
One thing to note, bootloader unlock on OnePlus loses widevine L1. If that's of interest to you. Not for me...

I haven't rooted in YEARS. Care to give me a brief synopsis on how to get root/s-off(or atleast get me in the right direction? It would be greatly appreciated! Phone is unlocked, and i use Verizon.
Whats up guys....its been forever since Ive had to root a phone due to having Pixel 1-3XL until now.
Ive been looking at OP and now that they have a true flagship I just ordered my 8 Pro TODAY!!! IT was finally in stock.
So my question is does the OP still have the features from Pixels like screening calls, screenshots from the assistant, etc?
Ill be doing some searches tonight...just trying to get some quick answers... a little excited.

The phone dialer app on the OP8 Pro is different than the Google dialer app so you don't get the standard features that the Pixel has.
I had OnePlus 7 pro and swapped to Pixel 4 XL. In overall Pixel is much better than any OnePlus device. As long as you don't really need ultra wide angel camera or 5g is not any reason to buy OnePlus. The difference between genuine Pixel software and Oxygen OS is so huge that using both is different experience, obviously genuine Android is far better in any aspect. Oxygen OS is Chinese crap which kills background activities like all Chinese Android skin and doesn't work stable enough. Finally you will have to flash buggy Pixel Experience rom and semi working Gcam mod instead for slightly better hardware which really not make difference in daily usage as long as the ultra wide lens or 5g is not absolutely must have for you.

I've owned a Pixel 4 XL and would still be owning it if it wasn't for the subpar battery life and the not too bright display. I'm not sure I understand your point about the Pixel's Android OS and Oxygen OS - they are probably the closest to stock Android (and the Pixel doesn't run "stock" Android but Google's slightly modified version of it). Have you tried any other manufacturers implementation of Android (One UI, Colour OS etc.) - they are way more different than Oxygen OS
I also think that you've forgotten about the Pixel also killing background activities in the past along with a slew of bugs that Google addressed over time - similar to what OnePlus will probably do.
Look, I'm not sticking up for OnePlus here - I think they did rush out a somewhat unfinished product. But I think Google did the same with the Pixel 4 XL and slapped it with some poor hardware decisions that cannot be fixed (No Ultrawide camera, small battery, 64GB base capacity and a relatively poor display).
Pixel line had so much potential and Google killed it with subpar hardware. Yes the software it's good but they also kill processes because of the baby battery. I was a nexus/ pixel only user, but Google left me no choice, and one plus is the only thing that could even come close to take it's place, and is a way better phone

I am in the SAME exact situation... Man, the days of crackflashing my galaxy nexus were suhweeeeeet. I am really looking forward to getting my OP8 Pro today and rooting it
Oneplus use designed battery capacity in marketing. In real world they use poor quality battery and to decrease degradation batteries are limited in software. E.X. In 7 Pro designed capacity is 4000 mAh for maximum voltage 4.4V but because of software limitation you cannot charge battery beyond about 4.3V. The real capacity is about 10% lower than declared. In Pixel 4 XL I noticed that new battery had 103 - 104% designed capacity. Finally on my 7 pro real battery capacity was over 200 mAh lower than on my Pixel 4 XL. In my opinion Pixel firmware is far better than Oxygen OS and the difference is really dramatic.
I came form a p4xl too to the op8p. Would love to get call screen. That's the only thing I am missing so far

Dammit, don't dissuade me from soending my money, lol. I was psyched to order this on preorder day but they ran out of stock before I could click 'check out'. Same for launch day. Now the shine has worn off since I've been waiting a couple weeks. Was gonna ship tomorrow but now I'm thinking of cancelling my order. I'm happy with my Note 10 plus but want the latest and greatest.
Oneplus 8 Pro has obviously noticeable better hardware in all aspects than Pixel 4. It's not bad bad at least my 7 Pro wasn't bad phone just software on my opinion is much better on Pixel. Some people doesn't care or install custom rom but since you try genuine Pixel you will notice difference.
