I am looking for an open source dialer replacement for the OOS dialer.
I thought either Emerald dialer or Simple Contacts would fit the bill only to find out they are overlay dialers AFTER I deleted my OOS dialer. OOPS! Overlays only work with a real dialer. =(
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance, JC

I have been using a patched version of the Google phone app with no problems.
I think it's posted in the Android Q patched boot img thread

If it is Google, I doubt it is open source.
I should have mentioned I am on Pie. Not going to install 10 until all the bugs that are plaguing so many get fixed.
I found the Lineage OS dialer apk and the file it needs to work, however, neither will install on my phone. Not sure why. I gave my file explorer root privileges.

If you have any interest in the patched Google Dialer it works on Android 9 as well. I have been using it on my 6T over a year now.
I've used the patch version, but it was glitchy. I recently found a Google phone go apk on apkmirror.com that works quite well. Get an error message that it isn't compatible with the phone every now and then, but the app works great. Here's the link: https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/googl...phone-40-0-275948326-go-android-apk-download/

You don't have to install a special patched Google Dialer version. All you need is the Google Dialer Framework module from Magisk to make it work. Install the module, reboot, and then go to Play to grab latest Google Dialer.... or Apkmirror.com to grab an even later beta-version.

The APK I referenced works without root or any other changes necessary. Just a simple app install.

Okey? That was not my point... with the Google Dialer Framework module via Magisk, you can then do any Google Dial version installaation. I don't think it requires root (well, I'm rooted so i don't know for sure).
Leave it if your´re not happy with my answer.
Thanks guys, but, unless Google is using an AOSP open source dialer without googling it up, I am not interested in anything Google.
Many apologies, I assumed "open source" in my OP would have made that clear.

My only point is that you don't need root for it to work. Magisk by definition is root isn't it? If I'm wrong, I'm sorry, but only point I'm making.
You're reminding me why I don't comment on these posts any more.

My fault actually, I thought you just wanted to replace the OOS dialer with a good working replacement
As many had issues with the OOS dialer on Android Q.
I didn't really think anything AOSP worked correctly in OOS without a lot of work

Pixel GPE Dialer and Contacts
This mod now works with Android N.
Updated to Google Pixel version of the Dialer and Contacts
I have taken the GPE Dialer and Contacts found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=68096911&postcount=95 and made it a Magisk Module. This allows the Dialer to act as though it is installed directly with in the system without actually modifying the system
For information on what Majisk is and how to install it, please read here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/mod-magisk-v1-universal-systemless-t3432382
This mod was tested on the HTC 10 using Magisk v7.
Only thing you can't do is change your Wi-Fi calling preference. If you are on WiFi preferred, you can't change it unless you disable the MOD and reboot. Make your change then re-rnable the MOD and reboot again. That is the only problem I have. It is the same if you flash the original zip that writes directly to system.
This zip file requires Magisk to be installed. It will not work without Magisk.
Changes sync'd and now available to download in Magisk Manager. Thanks for those testing...
v3.0.0
Update to new Magisk template to work with Magisk v12+
Update Dialer to v8.0.148481159
Update Contacts to v1.7.6
Or download from here: Magisk-GPEDialer_HTC10.v3.0.0
Download Here:
Magisk v7 version
This can be installed through the Magisk Manager 2.0 or flashed in recovery.
Note: All updates will only be available through the Magisk Manager going forward.
10/16/16 - New update with Google Contacts 1.5.16 downloadable through the Magisk Manager...
GPEDialer Pixel Version 2.0.0
GPEDialer_v5.1.13(Magisk v7)
GPEDialer Marshmallow Version 1.0.0
GPEDialer_v4.0.12(Magisk v7)
Magisk v6 version
Flash the zip file in recovery.

Use a root file explorer to go to /magisk/GPEDialer folder. Create a new empty file and name it disable then reboot
To re-enable, just delete the file and reboot.

Just a quick observation I noticed after using this mod for the past few days,
The ice view case works on receiving/rejecting calls with the GPE Dialer, but the caller always shows as "unknown". I'm assuming it's due to the HTC Contacts app integration into Ice View, but just figured I'd mention it. The fact that everything else works flawlessly, is totally awesome.

As far as I know, heads up notifications have to be supported by the rom you are using. I am using Viper 3.1 and it works for me.

I'm sorry, there is really nothing I can do. All I did was package the dialer to work as a Magisk Module. I don't use xposed but maybe there is an xposed module to do what you want. I just have no idea. Maybe someone else can suggest something.

Xposed was released for Oreo! Been so long don't know where to start.
EDIT: (I was just being dumb)
Grab the systemless version. Easiest way is through Magisk. Just make sure your on 15.2 or grab it via the link below.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/unofficial-systemless-xposed-t3388268
I think the best method is using the systemless version for magisk, I just tried it and it works.
Simpy go into modules and you will see the sdk27 version at the very bottom: tap on it, you see there is an updated xposed manager apk made for the new magisk version.
Download the apk, install the module, reboot, install apk, reboot.
Works with no problems
Enjoy

I feel dumb but I don't see xposed anywhere in the modules section of the Magisk Manager app.
Is there some other way I should be finding modules? I click on the hamburger menu and then downloads and there's about 30 or so listed.

Never mind. I figured out I had to be on Magisk 15.2. I was on 14.5.
So anyway I downloaded the Xposed Installer that is linked in Magisk Manager and installed it. Then I installed Xposed inside of Magisk. The only problem is the Xposed Installer crashes every time I click on a module to download. Does anyone else have this issue?

Yes, I confirm, I don't know if it's caused by Magisk or because it's just a beta...
Anyway there is a workaround, instead of downloading the module from xposed manager, download the apk of the module from internet (official repo website or from whatever you want), because when you are going to install and enable the modules there are no problems, and after a reboot they're working.
Updated op to reflect install options. Happy modding everyone!
Success! ?

Yeah I did everything the same as the way you installed nougat Xposed systemlessly. Also the framework module caused a lot of choppiness on my phone so I uninstalled it anyways
Just a head's up that MinMinGuard causes my Pixel to start crashing like crazy
I have been thinking of installing this since last night, but with it still in beta and modules still needing fixed for 8.1 I just can't see any reason (other than something new for me to play with) that will benefit me enough to deal with the SafetyNet failure.

I am happily enjoying the stock ROM on my XL and I keep the same installed on my wife's Pixel. I spent years swapping out custom ROMs on various devices and expected to do the same when I got the PIxels (very shortly after released almost 2 years ago). After the initial shortage of custom ROMs (due to the new OS engineering method) subsided and plenty came out, I realized there was nothing I was missing enough to deal with running custom and not being able to do a monthly update that takes me literally less than 10 minutes. Besides not missing anything, there is pretty much no bloat I need to get rid of, and the device still runs great even with a handful of "always on" apps. Probably best for you to look at the development sub-forum and do your research there and ask questions.

That's like asking, "which tastes better, vanilla or chocolate?" Make a twrp backup, and give it a try, what you like, another may hate. For me, it's fun to add features when I'm using a rom that is lacking in that department.
Hi, I'm curious if I could get the following: the stock ROM on the xt1768 US unlocked version of the phone, but I only want basically the Google stuff that's included in the Pico or Nano opengapps packages. This would entail removing all the included Google stuff from the stock ROM, installing compatible versions of the plain ol' vanilla Android versions of the apps that Google replaces (Messaging, Calendar, Browser, Launcher, etc), and then flashing one of the minimal opengapps packages on top of that.
Anyone have any insights on this or where to start? Thanks!

You should be able to remove/replace all the google apps other than chrome, the chrome homepage provider, velvet and anything other than the ones like GoogleExtShared,GoogleExtServices. Play music and google calendar and all those can go with no issues. Chrome and the others I listed can be removed, but if you do a data wipe, you'll have force closes form what I've found. I'm not sure how flashing gapps will work out. That doesn't normally work so good on stock ROMs.

Yes, they are in oem/privapp, but you can only modify oem in twrp. You also have to change some xml files. You can't just delete them.
If you're trying to get rid of all that (Google and moto apps, which will strip functionality away) why not just use a custom rom and micro g?

P.S, you can change your nav bar buttons with a substratum theme called navigate. I have a bat symbol as my home key now. You can also use Xposed to change the location of the buttons (gravitybox). I use the systemless Xposed in magisk.

Just flashed first and third zips. Is there a way to verify that it worked? It looks exactly the same.
Also.. any way to get stock versions of keyboard, calendar, calculator, gallery, etc?

Google dialer and aosp dialer look very similar. Look in it's settings, or check the package name to confirm.

Look in oem/priv-app and see if you have a folder named GoogleDialerOEM, or something similar. It may be named different on your device, but it should be the same. If you don't see any GoogleDialer at all there, it was uninstalled. Do you see a green dialer icon in your app drawer? It's really not hard to figure out how to change those other apps you mentioned. You just need to delete the ones you don't want from /system/app or /system/priv-app and replace them with what you want. Some apps like some keyboards and galleries require additional files in /system/lib and sometimes symlinks to certain libraries to work properly. If you swap an app and get force closes that is probably why. A little tip, use this file manager: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1523691 You can just grant it root permissions and use it to copy the apps you want to system, and it will automatically set all permissions for the app, libs and all folders correctly without having to set the permissions manually. If I do much more for you, I might as well just make you a custom stock ROM.
Edit: make sure any updates for google dialer from the play store were removed. I thought I added lines to remove them no matter what they were named but I may have missed a possibility. I use a different google dialer and don't update it on the play store so I don't know exactly what it is named when it's installed to /data/app.
Edit-2: I just updated my google dialer from the play store, and the correct lines to remove it should be in the updater script of that zip. It should have removed it unless yours is named different in your oem partition.

Why bother responding with ridicule if you weren't at least going to fully answer the question? Some people like stock without google and moto crap. Especially when there are no custom ROMs fully suitable for a daily driver for everyone.

Chill - it wasn't ridicule by any reasonable reading. And since when is "fully answer the question" a prerequisite to responding with relevant thoughts in a public thread? An opinion was volunteered; take it or leave it.

I'm sorry I misenturpreted your post, but you do seem to like to get condescending and short with people an awful lot. I don't know who you think I am, but I have had another account here in the past and left (requested it be deleted) on my own free will. I'm regretting coming back now.

I'm trying to install the f-droid privileged extension OTA zip, but after flashing it in TWRP, when I open F-Droid, the 'Expert mode' in the settings doesn't show it.
Steps I took....
1. Installed the FDroid.apk downloaded from https://f-droid.org/en/
2. Booted into TWRP and flashed the org.fdroid.fdroid.privileged.ota_2070 downloaded from here;
https://f-droid.org/packages/org.fdroid.fdroid.privileged.ota/
Here's the actual path to the OTA zip;
https://f-droid.org/repo/org.fdroid.fdroid.privileged.ota_2070.zip
Rebooted back into ROM, which by the way is AOSiP 5.6, started F-Droid for the first time, went to settings, Expert Mode, and nothing...
So here the developer puts out the OTA zip to flash in TWRP, it's mentioned here;
https://gitlab.com/fdroid/privileged-extension/
Then it's not working, or I'm missing something? Does anyone know how to do this manually? When I look at the site for the OTA it says this, Fixed OTA ZIP for Android 8.0 Oreo, and the custom roms is Oreo 8.1.0, so maybe this isn't supported?
I know there is Magisk Module and NanoDroid for F-Droid, but for now, I'd like to figure out why this OTA zip is not working?
Also can anyone explain, what the Pros & Cons are of installing manually VS using NanoDroid-Fdroid or Magisk?

I already know about using NanoDroid-Fdroid or Magisk, I'm just trying to figure out why this won't work manually.
It seems now after looking at this, the DEV hasn't updated this for Oreo 8.1.0 that the custom roms are using, so I'm working on it...

LOL, you always give me a funny face...
Anyhow, as I was looking around I found a issue on the Mi A1 that the developer is working on, in case you'd like to follow it, or anyone else interested in this for the Mi A1.

Well, it's the App to use, there's also YalpStore.
This is about MicroG/FakeGapps, using a rom with No Gapps, no Google Play Store, etc...
It's taken me a little time, but I've figured out how to do a nice clean Custom Rom install with NoGapps, and use MicroG.

Play Fortnite on a rooted or unrooted device with that unlocked bootloader
Hi XDA, I want to show you how to play fortnite with an unlocked bootloader without and with root, here are the steps
Disclaimer: This method will stop the use of magisk modules and magisk hide denies superuser privileges for the root apps hidden, proceed at your own risk and I am not responsible if your account gets banned or for the normal reasons (Thermonuclear war, etc.)
Without Root
Flash one of these kernels listed
KingKernel by kingbri (self promotion)
Flash Kernel by NathanChance
Stock Kernel with safetynet patch
Use EX kernel manager to check if the kernel is installed
Disable USB debugging
Install Fortnite
Profit
With R00T (Magisk modules will not work with this method)
Flash magisk and one of the kernels listed in the unrooted guide
Open magisk manager and grant superuser to all root apps (This is important later)
Open Fortnite installer and install fortnite but DO NOT OPEN IT
Use magisk hide and manually check all of your root apps + the fortnite installer and fortnite app
go into magisk manager settings
Click the "hide magisk manager option"
wait until the app closes out and a few seconds after that
enable magisk core mode in magisk manager settings
Open a file manager and delete the magisk manager folder as well as other folders such as EX or Alogcat
Disable USB debugging
Launch Fortnite
Profit
Always remember to un-hide root apps when you want to use them and hide them when using fortnite, otherwise, you will be kicked for their stupid "security"
Need an invite? Here's a fix
Open up build.prop in a file manager that is NOT CHECKED ON MAGISK HIDE
Edit build.prop to have these lines
ro.product.brand=samsung
ro.product.manufacturer=samsung
ro.build.product=star2lte
ro.product.device=star2lte
ro.product.model=SM-G965F
ro.product.name=star2ltexx
Save and reboot
Open magisk manager and magisk hide that file manager
Open Fortnite
You should be able to sign in
If you want to, revert your build.prop to the original settings and you will magically be invited since you participated on a "Samsung Device"
Feel free to rant about Epic games security here, because i'm pretty pissed at them for doing this.
Thanks to this youtube video for showing me how to bypass root checks https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ystVcsFjJaE&t=157s

No, when I go to the the kernels he linked I saw that the stock kernel with safetynet bypass was for pixel devices. I need a kernel with safetynet bypass but for my OnePlus 5

What y2grae is saying is that this is a Pixel XL forum, so obviously the kernels will be for Pixels and this method has most likely only been tested on a Pixel XL. You could find your own kernels and see if this method works for your phone as well.
I can confirm that following this guide worked for me. I can for the first time play Fortnite on my phone.
Edit: I just uninstalled the Fortnite Installer once Fortnite was installed. I don't see the point in keeping it unless I am missing something.

You must keep the Fortnite installer installed. It's what installs updates to the game, and you cannot play on an un-updated game.
stupid question, but i played it on my galaxy s8. but how do i install it on my essential phone now? i dont have any invites. its not that i play it mobile but its nice to have. (and im about to unlock and custom rom my essential phone so yeah..) looking to find how to get it working after that
There is a Reddit Thread that makes it appear like installing Fortnite from Samsungs Galaxy Apps will give you a chance at getting the Galaxy Skin.
I might try using my build prop editor/Galaxy Apps apk and seeing if I have any luck.
Anyone have any input or thoughts about why this might or might not work?
Edit: Seems to be working so far. I changed my build prop, downloaded the installer again and a pop up displayed saying "play 3 matches and unlock the skin in 24-48 hours. Only time will tell if I get it.

Did it work for you? From what I know, after spoofing it to be more 9, you still have to play 3 games but every time you try, it'll kick you out after you jump out of bus which won't let you complete the 3 games you need for he skin.

I was able to play the three games successfully but I don't think I'll be getting the skin from it as I played them over the weekend and it has been well over 48 hours.
There was a thread in the Pixel XL forum that guided you through playing on a rooted device and it works, but editing the build.prop isn't good enough to trick the game into giving you the skin. I read on a reddit thread that the Tab S4 can award the skin multiple times if you factory reset it because there is no imie linked to it so I might try using that instead.

Understood. I have a question: What makes the particular kernels in the first post so special that they pass safety net? I ask because i have a different device (Galaxy Note5) and im not sure which kernel will support passing the latest "invalid response" error that Magisk is currently having. I'm not asking you hunt kernels for me, but what determines it. I looked at the kernels that you suggested on the first post but they didn't mention any notes of patching safety net.

The Kernels have nothing to do with the 'Invalid Response' that Magisk is giving you. Magisk gives the 'Invalid Response' not because you fail SafetyNet Check but because Google changed how the API works and Magisk hasn't updated yet to work with it. Even with the 'Invalid Response' you most likely still pass the SafetyNet Check. This has been a known issue for a week or so now.
I believe he chose those Kernels because they include a few extra measures used to hide root/ pass safetynet.
