Me to, in dark situations, too dim, or it turns off when you go from light to dark, think that adaptive brightness have problem on all xiaomi phones, don't know is this problem with MIUI 10, MIUI 11 or something wrong with android 9, we will see what will be with android 10.
Well i bought mi to have at least some notifications as oneplus does to have any, but i think, i would be better of with oneplus as nothing when it is not supposed to work is better then nothing when there should be aod, but it is mostly to dark it is impossible to see or just plain off.
Well to be honest, only Samsung was where I was AOD to be really working, not even pixel or huawei was without issues. So I wonder where to go next time - I guess apple, as in EU samsungs have weird power hungry chips.
Tough I wanted full display without holes and I got it and it look really nice, shame that other functionality of the phone after update to miui11 is gone.
I have created a work around fix for this little annoying problem.
I used Tasker and made 5 profiles that reads Display Light values and adjust the Display Brightness .
I have set Auto Brightness OFF
Check it and give feedback if you find it useful.
I attach the tasker file to import it
So is there a solution for this nonsense issue already? Googling around and can't find a fix for over a year now.
I did not notice this issue on any other xiaomi phone, including mi6, mi8pro, mi9se.
This is so annoying, I want to throw this phone in to a wall at times. But then I remwmber how much time it takes to fully set up a new one.

Please add the option of modifying auto-brightness levels, like CM 6.1. I suppose that it would require a kernel modification + an app to do this through gui.
Thanks.
What can CM do? I've been thinking it would be nice to be able to modify the min and max, and maybe the curve.

It allows one to arbitrarily edit a table of sensor output vs brightness/button brightness.
It's really nifty.
CM6.1 reports these sensor values:
10, 160, 225, 320, 640, 1280, 2600, 10240
10-160 is in dimly lit indoors, 320-640-1280, in moderately to brightly lit indoors, and the rest is outside.
So I set those to brightness something like 50,60,70,80, 110, 140, 180, 255. A it was perfect to my eye. Not too bright, not too dim.
Didn't ever have to mess with brightness after that.
I'd really like to hear from developers like Netarchy and King, as well as from regular users - if they would like that option.
I would love to see this.
I always feel the auto-sensor tends to be too bright, and never adjusts the screen low enough inside.

That's exactly what I think. Plus, the brightness is not at maximum in direct sunlight (although that might be a safety feature).
Mine always send to bright, or it won't get bright when I go into a bright area until I sleep and wake it. :|

+1 on this. So motivated that I searched for this thread....
Any news?

The stock auto-brightness is way too bright in completely darkness. This is one of the things I had on my list nearly since the beginning. Nobody else seemed to care.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=716547
An article showing how useless auto-brightness is:
http://gizmodo.com/5673444/why-exis...d-brightness-controls-are-effectively-useless
Do people not notice this or do they just not care?
Pretty sure people have given up on this. It's taken me three days of Google searching to find this thread so people probably don't know where to turn.
The lack of adjustments to the auto brightness values is extremely annoying. Even my old Windows mobile 6 phones had this ability.

There was an application for WM I used to use on my Mogul, cant remember what it was called but it allowed you to calibrate the auto brightness levels. Anyone know what I'm talking about, or if there's an Android version?
This can be done with Tasker in the Market. Its a powerful app and there was a thread a while back about this exact thing. I don't remember what it was called, but I posted in it, so you could browse my posts from a month or so ago.
Hey... This thing makes phone calls too!
Hi there...
I am searching for hours now...
I want a Flashlight-App that uses the "ultra bright" mode..
all apps I found only were "medium bright"...
if you ever used a Flashlight-App on HD2 on Windows-Mobile, you should know, what I am talking about.
Only App I found was nexus-one-torch.
I think it "takes photos" to make the dual-LEDs go maximum brightness, but the disadvantage is: it flickeres alot..
Anyone knows a Flashlight-App that uses maximum brightness of the dual-LED-Flash on the HD2 with Android?
Thank you!!
Greetings from Germany!
I like Tesla led. it seems pretty good...
But Tesla LED is not as bright as Windows-Mobile or "Nexus One Torch".
It does not utilize the maximum led-brightness. :/
Why would you need the Max LED flashlight?
Are you gonna setup a party xD!
I think that.. its useless.. the "one" (referred to the settings/drivers) we got now is awesome.. i can clearly see everything in my room when the lights are off.
Because the device is capable of such a brightness..
aaaand...
BECAUSE ITS COOL!

You risk destroying the LED's, they will burn out.
It doesn't matter what your own personal experiences are, they will break. Think of it like staring into a laser and not seeing instant visual disruption. It'll happen, just give it time and it'll mess things up.

Everything breaks eventually my friend. I admit it may shorten the leds life span but some might not care because they wont use their phone for years and years. I personally have been using high mode on my nexus one for over a year and its still going
If you need something brighter than tesla, wouldn't it make sense to just use a maglite? Phones are great for minor conveniences, but just like the cameras, if i wanted top quality photos, i'd buy a digital camera not try to squeeze quality out of an inferior cel phone cam. Same with the flashlight, great if u drop ur keys at night, not so much if you're trying to light up your whole backyard or something.
-HD2 Android-
i dont think the torch app really uses the brightest setting.
i think its a matter of being properly programmed/optimized for hd2.
You could try Mag Flashlight, it has two brightness levels, but I'm not sure if it can use dual LED
yeah i remember the stock Hd2 flashight was WAY brighter, it puts the ones on android to shame, i want it back!
Yes, I've downloaded all available flashlight apps on the android market for my htc hd2, and NONE of them have matched to the htc hd2's windows mobile version. That particular version had 3 settings, low medium and high. All of the android flashlight apps seem to match the MEDIUM setting that the windowsmobile version was able to output.
Can someone port or write an android app that's nearly identical to the stock htc hd2's flashlight app that had 3 settings, without the annoying 5 second demo animation at the beginning on how to use it? That third setting (high) was KILLER, and impressed all of my friends as to the htc hd2's dual led true potential!
Same here, anyone have found any program with full bright?
HERE IT IS! (well i think its it. IDK)
okay so i pulled this off my typhoon CM7. its the "Torch" app. it has a high brightness setting as well as a strobe feature. (i have my mini raves XD)
its in apk format.
put it in sdcard, use a file explorer to locate it and install it. it should work.
btw i forgot. if it works hit the thanks button have a good day.
Unfortunately, like everyone is saying even the one that you pulled from the typhoon (althought it says it is the highest possible setting) is not the brightest setting that WM was able to achieve. Anyone else still looking for this like me? If someone who knows what they are doing could do this, it would be awesome!
For those that don't understand why we want this, you haven't used the WM LED flashlight long enought. I actually have great stories that goes along with the brightness of HD2 flashlight in WM (from everyone envying me at concerts to saving a bunch of us in the middle of the woods after the sun went down in the middle of a hike that went wrong =P).
Sending this straight back, I cannot believe there is no option to disable auto brightness settings on this heap of ++++.
It has got a mind of its own and is extremely annoying to suddenly see the screen get dim and bright every 5 seconds without any change in actual lighting condition...it makes the phone almost unusable.
Hope someone can make a hack for this soon.

I hear that. In love with my Xperia Play.
Guys can someone tell me. A lot of reviews say that the screen is very dim even on max setting and a lot of reviews say the exact opposite. So what is it?
Mine is perfect in the sun. I'm starting to think there are 2 types of screens involved, anyway to check what screen you have without opening the device up?
Screen brightness is ok for me, but just remarked the display have some ghosting issues. Slide beetween programs screens and observe carrefully the icons.... with red "Adresse" one this is very visible. i can't belive sony use a high response time display on a gamer device.
Im using a att s6 edge+. seems with auto brightness off the phone still changes brightness in a dark room. im coming from a note 4 and this never happened. i did read alot of issues like this on the smaller s6 edge. some people said to download lux or other brightness control apps but none of these have helped. I have also changed to each different display option to no avail. i tried with my flashlight while in a room and the phone did change brightness. also to note.... even the light coming off my tv was enough to change the intensity of the phones brightness. did i get a defective phone. there hasn't been a fix and searching online for this new phone has been pretty difficult. any advice would be great. my personal preference has always been to have the screen on max brightness but that's a personal choice.

Same Issue
Has there ever been any type of resolution to this? My phone does this as well. Don't want to return it for a refurbished Verizon phone that has a high change of also having the same problem. Don't want to root and lose Samsung capabilities and void the warranty. Just had a software update TODAY, this very morning and it didn't fix it. Call Samsung and they play stupid and act like they've never heard of it. This isn't a big deal in the grand scheme of things but at the end of the day when I'm trying to read at night or just browse the web and I have my bedroom lights off, I want my screen to be vivid and bright, but I get dull and dim.
---------- Post added at 12:52 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:29 PM ----------
What discourages me the most is that I just got this phone about 2 weeks ago and noticed this within the first few days. I google this problem and I see threads being posted about this mostly starting in April of 2015. We're now in late October and this is still going on, which leads me to believe Samsung is just not acknowledging the issue at all. I'm tempted to root just to fix this, but don't want to void the warranty and lose Samsung features like the edge notifications and clock.

Have you tried going into settings > Display > Screen Mode and switching off/changing from Adaptive display? Adaptive display is the default setting and this also messes with your brightness and colors dependent on your ambient lighting.
This is a well known bug on most S6's - Looks like a Firmware update should fix this issue.
Turn auto brightness off and set to max brightness ,then hold the phone to a bright light you will see the brightness dim after a few seconds, +BUG+

Hi everybody. Recently I bought a J7 pro for several reasons, one of which was Always on Display, a.k.a AOD. However from the first night I used it as a night clock I could apparently see that the background of the clock and notifications is not black and has a faint light. The funny part is that the preview of AOD is fine with all the black pixels off, but when you actually use it, all the pixels are on. I asked several J730F owners and they had the same problem, however my device is J730G. Please test and report. Just remember the environment must be completely dark.

Hey
I have the same problem
I have a j730f/D's
It's really frustrating and I guess it drains the battery a lot
I also noticed the that the preview of the aod is perfect on all brightness levels
Maybe thats because the display panel uses different settings when real aod is on ( like udervoltage and lower refresh rate things like this but I am not an expert )
Also visible on 3rd party apps from the PlayStore
I guess Samsung is using some hardware tweaks there to optimise battery life
What I also noticed is when the real aod is set to full brightness because of the sunlight the screen really gets black ( you can try this with a flashlight or so )
But on the lowest brightness the screen gets grey .
Would love to know if this is just software related or hardware
Because if it is hardware I give it a try and send it back

That's exactly my situation as well. On low brightness the screen is unbearably gray, otherwise it seems to be completely black. I guess you can try sending it back, unfortunately I don't have that option.
3rd party apps sucks because they can't use this special display mode Samsung uses
Maybe I will send it back
But I am not sure about that I wanted to wait until an update is coming, maybe it's software related so they can fix it .
I also send an email to Samsung but I saw your post on the Samsung forum so I don't expect too much
With how many ppl did you talk about that problem that have the j730f ? I mean it doesn't make sense to send it back and get a new one if it is a problem for every device
I got the same issue on my J730G/DS. When on low brightness aod, i can notice the whole screen lighting up a little bit. But on high brightness it is completely black. I think all j7 pro have this issue. At least we could try to send it back to samsung and see if they will fix or even do something about this issue.

I found several threads out there talking about this problem. Generally the problem was with S7 and other Samsung flagship devices. In all the circumstances there, the problem only was fixed by changing the AMOLED panel. However here in J7 pro it seems that when the screen is well lit, the black is truly black and when the ambient sensor reduces the light the problem shows its ugly face. This problem was not mentioned anywhere in those threads I mentioned.

I don't wanna waste any more money on my phone. So yeah let see what will Samsung do. It's impossible that this is the AMOLED panel fault. Looks like the version of our AOD is a bit old. Try compare it with the A 2017 Nougat AOD.

i tried atleast 3 different third party aod apps and all worked fine but only fault was battery consumption. so maybe it is not hardware problem. its just software related. we can only hope that samsung fixes it soon by update

Although I hope so and believe that j7 problem is different from previous problems seen on other faulty aods, but the way aod works is different from the way other aod apps work.
Hey guys
I've borrowed my friend's J7 Pro to see if she had this AOD problem. After I bring it to a very dark place, the AOD works like it should (No grayish AOD background). Guess it's a hardware problem. I will try to send it back to Samsung if I have time.

Have u tried it when the screen light adjusts to the dark environment? If so please do send it back to make sure what the source of the problem is.

The AOD uses the ambient light sensor to decide what brightness should be used ( I think AOD only recognize Dark and Bright situation, just like most of the proximity sensors )
So because it's dark, the screen also adjust itself to dark situation. No grayish background is seen. I compare mine with her side by side and I can see the difference.
Another thing to proof that this is a hardware problem is that when you put your finger on the fingerprint sensor and it unlocks, between the unlocking process, you can see the screen flicker before it unlocks the phone. Same as when you boot up the phone. Right after when you press the power button and it vibrate, you can see a flicker before "Samsung Galaxy J7 Pro" is shown.

Please do us all a huge favor and take some time and send the device to Samsung (I would if my phone was under warranty) so we can make sure what the root of the problem is and don't raise our hopes. :good:

I will find some time to send it back to Samsung. The distance from My home to the nearest Samsung Service Center is very far, took me about half an hour with usual traffic. But they are usually traffic jammed, so I predict an hour trip to the SSC. Not an easy job though I'm very busy all day.

Hey folks.
This Community works largely with US based devices so it's hard for us to speak on what may or may not have been in that update to cause this. You are welcome to see if the Community can assist, but as many may not have the same device as you it might also be worth reaching out to your region specifically for more in depth assistance!

I have this issue ever since I bough the phone in early August. Not 1 but 2 unit, model SM-J730G/DS. Both show the same symptom. Do Samsung selling phone with defect amoled panel or poor software implementation? What the hell!
If you all notice, the official samsung's AOD app for our J7 pro is not available anymore in Play Store. Why they remove support for our device? Why? From the feedback there, a lot of j7 pro owner report about this aod problem...
