Ok So whats this new level of idiocy, are we now trully saying that one can not ask a question that involkes opinions and subjective answers, the threads could contain factual information and objective opinions but i guess we shall never know beacuse they get closed...
I am actually supprised its got this low, if you think about it almost any question answered will be subjected to an opinional bias WE ARE HUMANS
So the two "Which ROM?" questions threads get closed i think we are all big enough to realise that what one person feels is good may not be to another but we all read reviews in mags, we all read reviews on the internet and they suffer the same problems with bias you cant remove that fact, you read the responces and judge for your self, blimey what is going on here!

There are a ton of new ROMs out there now and it is impossible to get a "feel" of the way they perform unless you spend all of your time flashing ROMs. Constructive discussion of ROMs and their strong and weak points shouldn't be cause for public shame.

Agreed, not everyone has the time, patience, ability, confidence to be flashing rom after rom, especially someone new to flashing. And for any user coming to these forums there is a bewildering amount of different roms and information. No one is asking for a be all and end all answer, but to get some opinions for a starting point can be very useful and inspire a bit of confidence to actually get going.
As long as constructive opinions are given, I personally don't see anything wrong in this. An answer as to why someone uses a rom for a particular reason may be the exact criteria that another person is looking for and might save that person a LOT of time and effort trying many roms first just to end up at that same rom.
The threads dazza mentioned I thought were being dealt with very constructively with some good advice in there. No one wants any flame war or anyone just being competitive with their chosen rom but please lets have some perspective, and credit most people with some intelligence and let some constructive discussion be allowed.

Totally agree. What harm can come from contructive opinions. This may save a person numerous flashes and time. Where is the harm in that?
It saved me time when I first joined and flashed my first ROM!!
Indeed, ill not flash a ROM unless ive had a good read about others views, its my choice to listen to them or not, theres just simply too many ROMS and versions of ROMs to not allow this constructive debate.
Blackstone users have not invented the habit to ask about which ROM is the best, which to use, etc.
Threads like these get closed because very simple reasons: the discussions in the respective threads are based solely on subjective opinions and experiences.
Every ROM has description in the ROM thread and plenty of feedback inside. What might suit me would most probably not suit you. It all comes down to users' needs and what and how they use their devices. ROM expectations are based on these. Thus, asking questions about ROMs would normally generate answer pointing in a direction other users might find wrong.
All ROMs are public, with their description and feedback inside. Nobody stops users from testing and trying ROMs, according to their tasted and expectations.
I was the one closing those threads and will continue closing similar threads.
In case you have objections, complain to site Admin regarding this issue and do not throw your anger at the XDA community which supports us all.
Moving this thread to General as it has nothing to do with ROM developent!

With respect, I don't see any anger here towards XDA, just opinions again. I don't think anyone is suggesting people shouldn't read and do some research, of course they should, but there are a lot of roms, some with hundreds of pages of feedback, and it can be pretty daunting. To be sure, there is a lot of help within each of threads for the individual roms but to get some perspective and comparison of them from those who have already tried many of them with some (subjective) opinions can be extremely helpful in my view.
With respect, its not feasable to test every single ROM to get a feel for them all before maknig a choice, you dont buy a car by trying out every single car on the road, you read reviews which are ALL subjective and opinionated and then rate those experiences to your needs, that limits your choices which then allows you to try it out,
everyone knows that an opinion is just that, its a user opinion, its a view of that individual. To stop all subjective / opinionated remarks would effectively shut down the website.
For instance a thread on the Touch HDs camera speed would be factual in the sence that everyone knows its crap with moving pictures, but the thread would always be subjective since other users will notice this more, you cant stop that trate in humans its in our nature, so long as the comments are not designed to personally attack anothers view the thread will live an die on its on accord with out the need to moderate them.
With regards to why i published this, it is in the communities intrest to know what they can and cant do, im not attacking you personally for closing them, just the "rules" behind the decision. but if we are not able to keep this thread civil and it gets closed then yes ill pass on my comments to the admin instead.
We are all (mostly) adults on here lets not bring the nanny state here as well.
I can add my 5 cents here.... this is a well known problem, in every forum.
You can open a thread asking "What ROM are you using and WHY?" and IMHO this could be interesting, but asking " ROM Ratings...Your Opinions" or worst " What ROM is the best for me?" are tricky questions, because RATING and OPINIONS doesn't fit well together in the first case and BEST FOR you? ...who knows is the first answer I have in mind
This doesn't seems to have high relevance but those threads could be, on the dark side, "Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs)", starting a flame war against or pro single chefs.
Are "dangerous" threads, a thread, may be with a poll, "What rom are you using and WHY" could be dangerous but interesting and will survive ONLY if users are responsible and avoid a flame war
Thanks, 5 cents donated
As tynnyt said "this is not a blackstone problem".
This issue was discussed to death here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=466666
Thanks

i don't have time to test each rom and for each of them to test every aspects in order to have my own conclusion.
as many others from here, would very intersted in the answer wich rom is best, but i am old enough (you would be surprised) to know that there is no answer to that question. from different reasons, pointed enough around here
what i want to suggest is a different approach, ofcourse if mods and admins will find that useful
instead in statement like x rom is better than y rom, or z rom rules, maybe guys who use or test different roms can give a feedback to others, with little experience, time or dare, concerning few aspects of the rom
for instance:
user noris08 (me) uses frank's rom v.1.5.12345. i would qualify that like that:
- glamurous looking
- moderate usability
- great battery life (15 days stand by - wouldn't you like that?)
- not so good speed
- extremely good for memory management (75% free)
- fix following known issues:
1. fix stutters in audio playing
2. add hardware acceleration for coreplayer
3. 3G signal always on 5 bars
4. gps fix in 5 sec
4. so on
- noticed bugs:
1. alarm clock doesn't work in stand by
2. appoinments shown with 2 hours delay
3. so on
- i would recomend it for mutimedia users
- i would rate it 7/10
it is likely that will be only a few guys with big harts to post their impressions, but is more then nothing.
in this way maybe we will not hurt rom developers feelings by just comparing x rom with y rom. they will also have some feed back concerning their work, appart of "thanks and great job mate"
just a thought!
cheers to everybody!
I agree 100% with the above post.
That a somewhat more acceptable way of putting things. If you also agree on benchmarking the ROMs (procedure, software used, etc.) then every user can post results/bugs/appearance/etc. and you'd have a standardized way of centralizing information that would be based on facts.
we're all big and old enough to know the difference, i think its quite disrespectful to ban such questions for several reasons, but something that is quite relevent is language.
English isnt everyones native language, gramatically speaking it might read to us as "which is the best ROM ever" but that might not be what they ment.
but whatever, seems minds are made and common sence has taken another knock back at the expence of so called politcal correctness, in this case offending the egos of the cookers out strips the need for new inexperienced users wanting simple feedback from the community about something without having to drudge through 1000s of pages of posts and spending much of there free time trying out every last ROM out there.
Just seems crazy if you ask me.

but using your logic, is it factual?
"- great battery life (15 days stand by - wouldn't you like that?)"
hell i have that ROM and its only lasting 10 days, instantly it becomes opinionated and subjectional
ok thats an extreme example, but even with a very well laid out feedback such as that people will disagree, you have to either ban them all or let adults use their own common sence.
I would like to say add guide lines for "which ROM" requests but another human trait is that they wont read them either.

Wasn't talking about battery (but even that could be reported as Radio + ROM + usage) but about using the same benchmark tool that needs to run in the same circumstances (i.e: after hard reset, manila disabled, etc.), about reporting memory usage after start up and after a day's usage, reporting bugs, etc.
I.E.:
SKTools benchmark:
X
X
X
X
Battery:
5 days with
A Radio
B Rom
X calls/day, X minutes of wifi, X no. of messages
Memory after startup:
X used
Storage memory after hard reset:
X used
Startup time:
X seconds from vibrate till stable today screen
etc.
id agree, a simple standardised benchmark runing a number of tests over a few hours would give a good account without the opinions, any suggestions?

You Guys find a way out and ellaborate the procedure that'd help you most. I gave you some hints. I'll support that, and I believe so will my fellow MOD colleagues.
Though my post count is considerably low, I have been an active follower/participator in the XDA HTC Evo 4G community for quite some time now. Remembering how overwhelming it was for me when I came to this website, seeing all the wonderful ROMS as well as confusing information, I thought of how much I wanted somewhat of a welcome post to tell me the best of the best ROM wise so I could jump right into the action. For those of you who feel the same way, I'm here to share my opinion of the two greatest roms currently out right now. I determine if a ROM is great with the following criteria: Stability, User Interface, Eye-Candy, Speed, Battery Performance, Extras from the Developer(s), and most importantly, the support given by the developer(s) as well as other enthusiasts. At this current point in time, these two roms are:
(The following explanations are quick summaries, rather than full reviews of the roms.)
Syngergy-Kingdom Nightlys developed by Virus among others (see credits on linked paged for others involved in the making of this truly awesome rom)
In your travels throughout this website newcomers you will become aware of nightlys as a term meaning experimental, but lacking stability (most of the time).
I can say from first hand experience this rom is the fastest I've seen, with very few problems and a wonderful support community.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1071547
Finally we have
Synergy developed by Myn (as above, see credits)
For those of you who have no prior experience to the htc evo modding scene, I can whole heartedly say this should be your gateway flash. Now in it's first release stage, it is extremely stable, snappy, and beautifully designed. Myn, a veteran developer, has been making roms for quite some time, his MO being ease of use and power. Have a question? The support given by Myn or his followers, a.k.a Mynions, is superb and you'll surely find an answer to your problem in no time at all.

Keep in mind, every rom has a different User Interface, and these two happen to be using the Sense interface created by HTC. Though you have the option of AOSP roms, which are very similar to just the normal android experience, the Sense experience thanks to all the developers on this site has become very streamlined, graphically astounding, as well as battery efficient and speedy. In fact, I have run into many more problems with AOSP roms than I have with sense. Just my two cents (no, I didn't use sense )
The last advice I can bestow upon anyone new or old who has made it to this final line is that reading is your best friend. You may have heard this way too much, but it's no joke. Just by going through the last couple pages ( I sometimes even read up to 10 or 20 pages back from the last most recent page) of a thread/post can you not only stay up to date on the current rom you are using, but learn a plethora of information about kernels, scripts, mods etc... overall anything that can benefit you. A plus side is you may even become addicted to reading such things, almost as if you're waiting for the new episode of a show you watch weekly. Over and out.
Hi!
I came first at imate jam times (mean HTC Magician). Have enjoy here a lot and, figuratively, this XDA world has been my second home for more than six year.
Before, I have been at doom's 9 (a DVD decryption and edition forum). And even before in Peque's Worlds (a Spanish Secam and Nagra decryption forum).
I use to write Access VBA for my own since more than 20 years and remember the times when I connect to a BBS with a 28 kbs modem. So, nearly sure, I’m older than most of the people here.
In real life I'm lawyer and use my smartphone for work everyday.
My last device (HTC HD2 running WinMo) pass away last summer (to be franc it is at the 'doctor' to get a new screen) and when I ordered my SIII, I was really afraid of so many changes coming.
Finally, English is not my mother language. I have, mostly, learned to read and write it here.
All that introduction is my small presentation in this SIII forum (not my first post). A way to justify why I dare to open a new thread and, finally, a pray for a little condescendence with my personal and not natively writed opinion.
After three months here, going to the subject, I'm slowly learning to use this new toy. Still far from providing something evaluable, but beginning to understand this new ecosystem with the help of a handful of masters that are teaching here for nothing.
I’m grateful to all of them and to XDA forums in general, but on the other side I’m also feeling that particularly this SIII area is a little missed, being feed by Samsung without order nor proposal and a little clutered by no sense.
Do we really need so many leaks and roms for our devices? Do we really need to lose time asking each other if UK leak should be first or not? Or, as an advanced user’s community, shouldn't we better be asking Samsung firmly to solve all the problems we find and to push fixes to our devices without waiting new local otas or leaks.
In general we have a very good device. Hardware is incredible. Android is a wonderful open source project. And Touchwiz a very nice interface made by Samsung for us.
But touchwiz is also the reason why many people bought a Samsung phone and mandatory interface for a lot of functions, and definitively it has some glitches very difficult to understand.
Should we really be changing manually firmwares to get a colour to our likes?
Don’t we deserve a proper skining system, to decide the colour of our notification bar or to change the switches we has in it, with just a menu option?
Do we deserve a final fix for lags, the battery gripes lot of people has suffer without an explanation or the poor dialer we get?
Shouldn’t Samsung forget that way of feeding us and begin to work to solve immediately the problems we find and to send us and maintain daily updated a software that at least do right the few things it should do out of the box.
Come on Sammy, you have make wonderful things for this device (prediction in Keyboard is incredible, battery life is most of the time incredible, interactivity in touchwiz is very well constructed...) but you are also kidding us and being dumb to the voice of the people that at the end could tell you what the user need...
Don’t know if it will be for god or not, but for me threads asking for solutions, like the one claiming Exynos sources, are the ones who should be pinned and treads like “Increase your battery life up to 500% (All android phones)” or the one discussing which should be the leaks order, must be immediately closed and forget. Personally I feel that only this way XDA’s SIII forum will has the chance to do the things forums has made for advance and knowledge I other areas.
To conclude and focusing, shouldn’t we refuse to act like a laboratory mouse and drive to more constructive ways, with clear petitions to Sammy internal developers?
Thats all.
Please, forgive me if this sound a little stupid ....or should go to and specific threat
Hello everyone,
most of you probably don't know me since I did not develop for Samsung devices for quite some time now.
I would be interested in aiding the Exynos 5420 development scene (in particular on the Galaxy Note 10.1) and prepare a custom Android distribution for it (Team EOS 5.0 - Lollipop).
I can get all the required drivers and binaries I need for development, since most of it is open source luckily.
And the Nexus 10 (manta) can still be used as reference for many things.
All I need is a development device to debug on.
It is particularly important that this is the Galaxy Note 10.1 EXYNOS (WiFi-only variant), and not the LTE (Qualcomm) variant.
I created this thread to ask whether someone has a spare device lying around, maybe because of the little development on Exynos 5 devices, or if people would be willing to donate a device (I'm a university student and unfortunately can not afford the full price for a new device. I'm willing to dive into the Exynos development scene and spend time on this device though, including extensive debugging).
You can leave a reply in this thread or contact me on gmail: [email protected]
I have a better idea. Sending device is a problem. But we can donate to you, and then u can purchase P600 or P601 on SWAPA or EBAY. not new but fully working
I would be glad to see working AOSP/MAHDI or other ROMs runnig on my P601
Yeah, that was the initial idea.
I would pay any shipping costs or parts of a device (a used one is perfectly fine).
The issue I see is that probably not enough people willing to donate enough small amounts of money, hence I asked if someone had a spare device I could buy or pay the shipping costs.

I think it would be better to ask for donations because there is not a lot of people here although it would be hard. There have been previous instances where at least 2 different devs raised donations for this device before stopping development shortly after so people do have some trust issues. It would take a while but i'm sure people would donate considering you are offering an AOSP experience. If you renamed this thread to something like: Donations needed for new device- AOSP rom development. Then it would catch a lot of eyes because that's what a lot of people want The question remains whether people would actually donate. The average cost for you would be around 250-300 euros I think. That means you would need around 28 people (10 each). Whatever way you decide to go down, I wish you luck and I look forward to any rom developments if you do manage to get the device :good:
You seem to have quite a respectable history (in both Rom & kernel developement), so I think getting enough donations should be doable (and I'd be willing to donate a few bucks myself)
But I do have a few questions:
1) What about warranty? Some devs who had collected donations for a (used) device, have bricked their devices -> no more developement
Therefore P600 owners might be scared / hard to convince
2) what exactly is "Team EOS 5.0" and what makes it different from other Roms? Would you perhaps consider developing other Roms / kernels as well? (like porting over PA for example?)
Or would you maybe consider becoming the official P600 CyanogenMod maintainer (since we don't have one, yet)? [<- I think this one would be reason enough to donate]
Last but not least:
You could ask one of the XDA members who managed the previous donation-collections for help (they have successfully done it before, so they might be able to do it again :fingers-crossed: )
PS: The Note 10.1 2014 is great for college, trust me - I'm a student, too . All you need is the Papyrus-App from the Play Store.
Thank you two for your reasonable thoughts.
I think the main reason why the previous developers stopped developing for this device rather quickly is the Exynos chip.
The main difference between me and anyone else is (or so I believe) the fact that I am especially interested in developing for the Exynos 5420 chip and the drivers for it (mainly from the Insignal forum source).
As far as bricked devices, I can say I had a Samsung device before, and as long as the bootloader is unlockable and access to ODIN (The firmware flashing tool) is granted, a hard brick is rather hard to achieve. I see little risk here, and I assume my previous development experience will prevent me from making major mistakes in that regard.
A new device would cost me approximately 350€, so if we could collect about 300$ with donations (which would equal something like 270€), I'd pay the remaining costs.
People are of course free to check my development history and/or references first and see if they think I would benefit the aosp development scene for this device.
The ROM I mentioned (Team EOS 5.0 lollipop) is essentially AOSP 5.0 with selected features that we code ourselves, like EOS Weather, or the NX gesture interface.
If people however see the need for an official CM maintainer, I'd be happy to become this as well, all I need is a device to debug and develop on, I'd be willing to spend the time to officially maintain this device.
Other developers and/or contributors should also expect support from me in areas of kernel development or AOSP custom ROM development. I believe in 'sharing is caring', so all my knowledge and achievements on this device shall benefit the community.
If some of you could maybe contact the people who raised donations before, I'd be thankful and gratious for the support. All donations will be listed here and the whole process shall be as transparent as possible.

I don't see why another thread is needed though. I don't mind opening one up for you but you might as well use this one if you just rename it and state your intentions in the op.

Okay, so if maybe one of you guys, with good contact to the community, could open a new donatiion thread to collect the ~300$, I'd be grateful.
Or maybe @drrasii could chime in here and edit his first donation thread and link here as a reference to let people know what I want to do.
As I said above, I'd be willing to become the official CM maintainer, or if CM refuses to accept this for some reason, I'd host the needed sources for the device on my personal GitHub and keep it updated so people can build whatever ROM they want.
Of course, the first goal would be to get Lollipop running on this tablet, which I'd start with as soon as the device is ordered/has arrived.
Hey guys. That donation thread I started a while ago was on a whim cause I wanted Hyperdrive by sbreen on my Note. Was lucky enough to have him commit and get enough people chipping in for the tablet which was met with success. I'm by no means a great organizer or somebody with tight connections here on XDA . Probably would be best if someone who wanted to head it up would start a new thread stating the case.
Best of luck!

Thanks for the quick answer.
Could one of you guys (@22sl22 or @r4yN) then open a new donation thread and explain a bit about this thread and my plans?
If we manage to handle this process rather quickly, people should be able to enjoy L on this tablet soon hopefully.

I'll also post a message in here after the new thread has been created so that people know http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-10-2014/general/rumours-plans-to-android-5-0-t2861225
EDIT: before I open the thread, how much do you actually need? $300 is about 240 Euros, not 270 so we will need a bit more, say $350, would that be OK?
Thank you very much.
Actually, 300$ (240$) is enough, I'd be willing to pay the other 100€ myself if it needs to be.
I want to get started rather quickly and have L running on this device, so I'd order the device as soon as the 300$ are collected.
Why a P600 model and not the P601 model?
The p601 to develop is exactly the same from p600 plus the phone side.
Sent from my SM-P601 using XDA Free mobile app
Why the delay? Here are the first 10 €!

Hi RaymanFX!
Glad to see that a real dev wants to take our device and port CM11 for us.
I do not make many words, but simply push the first $ 12.12 to you.
That's the current rates for 10, -€.
Hope it works as good as for sbreen (dev from HyperdriveRom) and many people jumps like lemmings behind me. :good: Haha!
Hope also we get the money quickly together and will try to continue to encourage people to make a small donation.

Hey RaymanFX, excited for asop 5.0 but curious about some of the stock features that make this tablet. Is there any way to preserve multi window support or s-pen features ?
Hi,
I just thought it could be worth mentioning that there's a device request thread on Cyanogenmod forums for our beloved Idol 3 :
http://forum.cyanogenmod.org/topic/111850-alcatel-onetouch-idol-3-55/
May I suggest that everyone who wants a Cyanogen rom to be ported on our phones should take a minute to register there and add their voices to the request ?
There's already 24 posts in this thread

Cool
Just made a post, but later found out that posting a request for CM does not guarantee anything. In the sticky it states
Now, what does this mean to you? First off, requesting anywhere in the CM forum, the CM Blog, or the Facebook/Google+/Twitter accounts for device XX to be supported is probably a waste of your time and anybody who reads said request. CyanogenMod does not work on device requests as there is no guaranteeing that a current CM maintainer is even interested in the device. Additionally, its not as simple as 'porting' code, the device trees must be coded from scratch and made to work with the AOSP sourced code and CM enhancements. This takes a large amount of time and effort, especially when the device's OEM fails to release the latest version of Android for it. Second, in hoping a worthy developer sees the post and decides to take up the project... well, that is probably just wishful thinking. Many developers do not like interacting with end users (too much finger pointing between both devs and users or anger directed at the devs for something working other than how the user expects - it happens far too often); because of that, many developers don't frequent the forum (or if they do, they only view the forums for the devices they maintain).
The best way to get a device official support is not requesting it from the CM team, but learning how to do it yourself or encouraging a maintainer of an unofficial build to submit their code for review. Many developers will work on unofficial ports on the xda-developers forum, so that would be the first place to check out. If there isn't any work currently being done, you can attempt it yourself. There is a pretty in-depth article in the wiki explaining a lot of the steps of porting a device (as the bottom of the wiki states, nothing can cover every single process of porting, but it is a really great start).

So it would need to be someone willing to take the time out to buy an Idol 3, if one has not done so already, and then port the code for our device out of their free time. And considering the userbase for this phone does not seem all that large to be noticed, I'm not sure if CM will work on our phones anytime soon.
Well thank you very much for your posts and your research.
I'm afraid you're right, but we had to ask
Let's not lose hope too soon anyway, the fact that the device request thread exist seems to be a good point. I don't know if any device had received a CM port because of this thread, but... why not ?
I've red that Alcatel and cyanogen had been in contact for a tablet. The project has been cancelled but this might suggest they could have access to resources that would ease their work (pilots ?).
Original rom on the idol is pretty much stock Android, this is a good thing too (well I'm not a developer but I guess it's easier when it's close to the original).
And, like you said, even if the user base is not that large, chances that someone from cyanogen got seduced by the idol (like we did) are still possible... (this is the moment where everybody crosses their fingers ).
Anyway thanks again !
The thread has now 31 posts (ah no, 32 webgaffeur just added his voice !)
Thanks to all the people that took some time to post there, let's not give it up : it's time to flood the forum !
i had posted the github with source for the phone but no one seems to respond not even one single admin? we can ask other devs crdroid pacrom dirty unicorns paranoid etc.
Alas, I think Brian is right : it's probably a waste of time posting on the device request thread
I checked devices with a lot more posts and views than ours and... nothing from a dev (like huyawei and Asus zenforce 5).
Asking to other rom devs will probably be useless also. Our only hope is that a competent developer buy an idol and start working on it... If this happens, I'm pretty sure he will share his work on XDA.
Well, meanwhile we already have root, twrp and xposed working, so I guess the best thing to do is to customise out phones till it suits our needs and that's all.
Let's hope also that Alcatel will continue to push updates (marshmallow ?)
Anyway thanks for your efforts Gecko.
Sorry, didn't mean to rain on anyones parade. Just wanted to let everyone know what the stickied thread on the CM forum for device requests stated. I'm not saying it won't ever happen, just that it might take some time to get a valued reputable dev who owns, or wouldn't mind purchasing the Idol 3 and working on it for us. Most dev's accept donations of devices that want development on from the users, so if we were able to locate and contact a reputable dev, asking them if we were to provide them with the device, would they mind porting or creating a ROM for it. It's worth a try. Maybe start a bounty or fundraiser etc. I myself do not know of any dev's that would be willing to work on this device as the ones I do know of have only worked on Samsung devices.
I don't know any dev at all
P.S. : thread has 34 answers now !
