hello community,
i wanted to know how i can monitor network traffic/activity (wifi, mobile data, GPS)
inside my ASUS X00TD
at best, right next to the physical hardware layer
i guess i need to root it
is there already some tool created that does this job ?
thanks

Greetings all,
I have searched around for an answer without success so I thought I would post here to see if anyone may be able to point me in the right direction.
I have a need to develop an app for my research project, that has the ability to inspect and display the header information from an IP packet, recieved through the 802.11 wireless interface a PDA device. Bascially, I want to examine any packet 'sensed' (for the lack of a better word) by the RF interface and view the header info.
I have searched for managed code examples on how to obtain packets from an Windows Mobile inbuilt library's but have not found anything...
I am also looking at the OpenNETCF.org framework for any leads on how to achieve this..( & without sucess as well at present...)
If anyone has been down this path or has any advice I would appreaciate
it.
Many thanks
Cheers
Are you looking for capturing network packets or actual 802.11 frames.
Network traffic is less useful considering most AP's are network switches, and therefor the only network packets coming to your device will be directed at you and/or broadcast traffic.
Wireless frame sniffers on the other hand have the ability to collect all wireless activity in the area. These are useful when trying to find an open channel to put you AP on, but it can also be used to sniff the traffic of other wireless users on your network. Keep in mind though, that encrypted frames will require some extra processing power to read.
In pc land, you can play with Omnipeek to get an idea of the power of a wireless frame sniffer.
I've been searching for over an hour with no luck.
Is there a sniffer for WM that will allow you to capture packets from the 3G interface?
I see that there are heaps of sniffers out there for wifi, and I have been using Etherel on my network to try to sort out some VoIP issues.
I want to see if what I see when I sniff the wifi packets would be the same over 3G. If I have the same problems then it might be the Internet Calling modules in WM6 and nothing to do with the network.
Thanks,
Baggy
I´m also searching for a a network logger for 2G/3G.
Me too...
think the problem is that with wifi the pda have alot of control
but with phone related things it's don in a different module
and i dont think the pda where software run wild
have much access under the skirt of the cellphone part
could be that it's in large a blackbox which handle much of the osi layer
Thks Rudegar...
... and what a PPC Explorer debugger?, exists?
Best Regards.
i don't know if it's ok what I'm saying here, but I'll give it a try...
I have internet on my mobile, but mostly I live from open wifi conections.
in my house there is only one conection and it's secured. because i download aplications and stuff when I'm home this makes me want to conect to this wifi. is there a method to do it? if it's the one that involves me asking people, i did some searching and nothing...
Connecting to secured wifi is no problem... unless, and i assume this to be the case, it's not your WiFi or you don't have the passkeys?
There are no effective WiFi sniffers / packet analyzers on android to speak of. Those tools have not been ported due to the fact that the drivers created for the wireless chipsets do not support monitor mode. A custom driver would have to be written before porting these tools can have any usefull outcome.
I want an android phone to have both 'normal wi-fi' and 'portable
hotspot' turned on at the same time, so that I will be able to get the RSSI values of wireless networks as well as involve in an hotspot connection.
Scenario:
- 4 rooted android phones in CyanogenMod (2-Nexus One, 2-Galaxy S2; consider A,B,C,D).
- Kernel version 2.3.3 in all the phones
- Portable wi-fi hot spot enabled in all the phones.
I wrote an application to find the RSSI values of available wireless signals. But as the phones (A,B,C,D) are using wi-fi hot spot, the normal wifi does not turn on. Either wi-fi hot spot can be on, or normal wi-fi can be on.
i.e. If each phone(A,B, C and D) have a wifi hotspot created (AH, BH, CH, DH), then I am not able to use my application, as normal wifi connection needs to be turned on to find the wireless networks.
So I want the phones to scan available wireless networks with
portable wi-fi hot spot enabled. Is there a way to do this.?
Thanks in advance for your help.
PS: As I am new to this forum, if this is not the right place for this post, kindly move it to the appropriate section.
As far as I know its not physically possible to have hardware run in two modes at once. You would need two wifi chips to do this.
At home my Tablet hides behind a Router which has a built in firewall. But once I leave home and connect to the outside world I'm stepping outside my comfort zone. I've yet to learn about Tethering but that also leaves me open to the outside world.
So do I need to install a firewall and/or a malware detector?
Firewall? Nah, your tablet shouldn't have many listener services running which are vulnerable.
If you're worried about network security on foreign networks, I'd recommend you look into VPN connections from your tablet, which means all the traffic you send over that public network is encrypted and bad guys can't do that much with it.
Imho data security is a much bigger issue on mobile networks than malware exploits.
