I rooted my phone, installed lagfix, and removed some bloatware from the phone via Titanium. The phone was stupid fast after doing this, almost everything loaded up instantly. However I started to notice some things weren't functioning properly. Apps on the marketplace would not download, I would try to download Launcher Pro and nothing would happen, nothing downloaded. Tried this with other apps, same thing. I rebooted the phone and noticed upon reboot that a force close/app error happened, not sure which app it was but it had google in it. I have no idea what app it could have been since I only removed apps if I knew what they were like Slacker, Kindle, Sims etc. Maybe removing the Sims caused the error?
I also noticed that emails wouldn't send (or would take a long time) even when I was on wifi. And the XDA app wouldn't work. I would go to make a post, click the text input box, but it wouldn't let me move the text cursor. I would press the keyboard and nothing happened.
I removed a crap ton of apps but they weren't anything major. I also removed the samsung widgets since I would never use those. Guess I should have asked on the forums before removing so much stuff.
---
Which apps are okay to remove? Any ideas on which app could have caused the market to mess up?
From what you listed, those are all safe apps to dump. I would have thought any issue is more likely to come from the lag fix than nuking "safe" apps. There are several threads discussing the apps that are safe to get rid of, take a look in the stickie for a link if you can't find it via seach.
Cool thanks!

I 2nd that, I accidentally installed both lag fixes and got the force close thing. I had to nandroid restore and reinstall.

DELETE THE BLOAT!
Download Root Explorer (i'm not associated with) and go to System/App to remove a lot of the bloatware that came on the phone. I strongly encourage researching what can & can NOT be removed. ALWAYS make a backup. Here is a good thread about removing the bloat. Remember, I am not responsible. It will be some time before we have a custom ROM that removes this crap for us.

Which is the best for removing bloatware; Titanium, Root Explorer, or Root Manager?

I used root explorer, to "move" apps to a backup folder on sd card. Then went into Android settings -apps-manage apps --filter - all and uninstalled the apps.
Two step process. First step puts them out of sight, second properly gets rid of them. FYI, you can not do step 2 without doing the first step.

That makes sense. What if I move lets say 10 "bloatware" apps onto the SD card, delete them from the phone, then something goes wrong or something stops working. I can just move it back and it'll be fine right? And you don't literally mean you can't do step two without doing step one right?
I did filter all in the manage apps but I have two questions.
1. I went to a random app ThinkFree Office, there was no option to delete it there. I thought you could only delete bloatware in an app like Titanium?
2. When you delete an app it creates that long "com.app.uselessword here.word" listing right? In order to truly remove an app you would have to delete it in Titanium/Root Explorer then delete the thing I said right?
Unless you do step 1 you can not delete them in apps manager. Not sure why and it makes it a PITA.
when I dumped my bloat files were compeately gone from system/app. there was no com.app.uselessword here.word type listing.
I have not used Ti to remove apps so I can not speak as to how it works, if it truley uninstalls then it could be a one step process (I would still back the apk odex files first).
Again I have not tried to reinstall but I would imagine it works in reverse, move apk/odex to system/app and install.
Hi guys,
did you notice the lack of free space on N10 after upgrading to 5.0? (I used factory images, if that makes any difference). I have 148K free after rooting on /system. That's a disaster, can't even install BusyBox (around 1 meg), not mentioning Xposed once it's available.
Any ideas how to solve this, yet keep the device accepting future OTA updates?
Thx,
Aleq
I have the exact same problem. Something that I didn't face on my n5. Also fully wiped while installing the factory image.
Btw mate, you won't be able to install xposed anyways since it's not yet compatible with the new runtime
Yes, that's why I wrote "...once it's available".
Anyway the best solution so far is to backup the Stock with CWM (or TWRP), remove the data archive (to save space) and then remove unnecessary apps from /system like Korean input method etc. When OTA comes, restore the system only and apply it. A little bit cumbersome, but I'm not aware of any better solution at this moment. Or perhaps flash system.img via fastboot before OTA.
Could you get busybox to install that way? Or it's not just a problem of space left?
178kb left tho can't be...meant, can it?
PS: sorry, my bad about xposed, I thought you meant to say install xposed once that (busybox) becomes available
PPS: what do you mean with the data archive?
I flashed factory images. Rooted with cf auto. Flashed TWRP recovery and used filemanager to manually remove apps from /system/app folder like gmail maps etc. If needed get them from play store and they will get installed in /data partition instead.

But @Aleq suggestion of making a backup of /system before starting to modify it isn't a bad one, atm you have basically no way to be able to install OTAs as they will be released @Johan1976 , not even sideloading them.
I guess I can just flash the system.img from factory images if needed in the future.

Use an app called System app remover (ROOT) found in the playstore. It has a feature which allows you to restore apps if you need them from a trash folder in your user space. I've used it successfully with KitKat and just saw in an XDA post that it works with Lollipop for this exact purpose.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jumobile.manager.systemapp&hl=en
I liked it enough to purchase the pro version just to support the developer. It even rates what is safe to remove.

You can also ship busybox into your kernel ramdisk. But I think for now the simplest remains like others said to remove unnecessary apps from /system partition
However, good news, cm12 takes only ~ 500 mb of space, will make it public when it is a bit more stable.
I'm having the same problem. All busybox apps showing 0.0 system space even after cleaning out 70mb of apps. Can't install busybox at all, tried jrummy, steiricson and busybox X. With the exception of the latter they failed. Suspicious of the legitimacy of busybox X because it said it succeeded when it didn't. I need busybox!!!
Thanks guys, I was able to install busybox after removing unnecessary system apps
Solved removing unnecessary apps with TB
I've uninstalled Korean and Japanese input apps, Cloud print app and stock Live Wallpapers using Titanium Bakchup (about 19 Mb free in System folder). Then Busybox install went OK.
I was finally able to install busybox and get init.d running, thank you.
On a side note, anyone know where lmk went? It's not in the usual /sys/module/lowmemorykiller/ location.
Hey there
How do I completely remove system-bound apps like WhatsApp and Instagram? The only option I am given is to "turn off" the application.
I tried using Titanium Backup but it ended up doing more harm than good so I just updated (redownloaded) the apps from the Google PlayStore until someone can help me achieve that. Would removing the actual .com file from the root directory work? I remember doing that on my HTC to safely remove system apps. If so, where is the folder containing them located?
Thank you for your time.
I completely disabled all unwanted apps (also system apps) using Package Disabler Pro (Samsung), no root required.

Removing system apps, does that make the phone go crazy?
"System apps" means all the apps you can't uninstall using the app manager.
Many of them installed by Samsung are bloatware or completely useless, unused and then unwanted.
Those apps can be safely disabled (not uninstalled), this process is reversible at any time.

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, disabling the app (WhatsApp in this case) did not do it for me, simply because I'm trying to replace it with another application, in this case WhatsApp Plus.
I ended up removing all its files manually, which left it in the PlayStore with an "update" option, so I updated it and then uninstalled it. I don't know how I did it or how that worked, but it did!

I'd be careful of what you uninstall as some of the system apps are connected to the others and could end up with a big mess.
ADB is your friend it that's the path you want to go down.
1. connect device, make sure ADB is working (check with CMD "adb devices")
2. go to shell, using CMD "adb shell"
3. get list of install packages using CMD "pm list packages" (use google to find out what does each package name means).
4. remove package using CMD "pm uninstall -k --user 0 $packagname" (e.g. pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.android.inputdevices)
5. if correctly typed, you receive message "SUCCESS"
Optionally a reboot might be required.

While knowing how to use ADB is very handy, removing apps via TitianiumBackup is by far easier and faster for this purpose.
I use ADB and fastboot for several things, but as for removing the bloatware and OnePlus apps on OOS until LOS is available, TitaniumBackup is much faster/easier.

The next update, I'm going to make a list (and post it). As when I went through my phone I tried to search and find a list, and all I could across was tons of post saying this has been covered before. So then all I could find was very out-dated information, or suggestions like don't remove anything. None of which is helpful...
I ended up removing a whole bunch of stuff right off the bat that I've known is safe for a long time. Anything that I was not quite sure about, I chose the freeze option in TitianiumBackup, restarted, and waited to see if I had any issues. If I didn't, I removed it entirely.
Backup your data, what's the worse thing that happens, you make OOS angry, and you have to boot back into Fastboot or TWRP to reflash the ROM, no big deal.

as fast and as smooth as this phone is, why would you want to remove any system apps?
thats usually done to reduce overhead or speed up laggy phones; this phone is NOTHING like that...
I'd leave well enough alone, until something specific happens to your phone that makes you think you need to delete something..

OnePlus has a very bad reputation for sending information back to their servers. So I would say this is a security / privacy issue. Especially until some other alternative to OOS is available.

If it's a real system app you don't have more storage for data... As system is a separated partition it's not the main argument.
The other inconvenient is that you have to remove them at each OTA or make a script to automate this.
Most of the time it's better to just freeze them with titanium as it remains after OTA.

I am rooted an I have Magisk. There's a modeule you can download off Magisk manager called "debloater" +terminal emulator that can remove anything off the phone. Reboot to take effect. It's basically my "Aroma".
I use it to debloat a lot of OnePlus stuff such as:
Contacts, messages, gallery, file explorer, Google play movies, etc.
Then I replace those with the Google counterpart and Nova launcher.
And if I "f-up", I can simply reinstall them right back on. No problem.
I love it.

I'm assuming you don't have the T-Mobile version, if you do there is a different thread with Fastboot images of both the international and T-mobile images.
Here is the official thread for download the regular 6T images (non branded / TMobile) OOS Roms: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6t/how-to/official-oxygenos-9-0-4-ota-oneplus-6t-t3860953
I assume you've seen this:
[Guide] OnePlus 6T [Fajita]: Unlock | Flash TWRP | Root | Nandroid & EFS Backup !!
I flashed the ROM, using ADB sideload in TWRP. So make sure you have ADB working on your PC first I've found this is really easiest to do in Linux, so even if you do this just booting from a live USB/CD is fine.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/on...overy-unofficial-twrp-touch-recovery-t3861482
Backup any apps you care about in TitaniumBackup, copy that folder to your PC. Copy any other data to your PC as well just in case (music, photos, etc). Lastly, you will have to copy the Android and Data folders, these two folders will contain data for apps that TitaniumBackup may not have gotten.
If you search you should be able to come across lists, even though dated of programs and what they do, that you can remove. Just read up some, backup your data, make sure you have ADB and Fastboot working on your PC, and you'll should be fine.

You could use Titanium Backup (on a rooted device)for that. It separates system apps from installed apps. Before completely removing an app it's a good practice to first make a backup in case it breaks the system, then you can always restore it from there.
It would be a good etiquette i completely agree. I am waiting for a way to root the device without completely resetting the phone. I do not have time and energy to set my work emails and all accounts again.

That is not the point. Titanium Backup cannot uninstall some of the pre-installed apps (whether identified as system apps or otherwise by Titanium Backup) bundled by Xiaomi. If only you owned one, you would know.
Only Magisk Debloater (with Termux) can remove those.
Well there are many ways. You can root your phone or you can use adb fastboot.
I saw this video on youtube and it worked really well for me which uses Adb.
