Weird Backlight/Overheating issue - Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2, 10.1, 8.4 General

Hey guys, hoping you all can chime in on this.
Got an SM-t520. My dad grabbed one used off ebay a few years ago and when it arrived it had a weird backlight issue. half of the screen stayed 100% lit and the other side flickered-- if the tablet was pressed in certain areas the whole screen would flicker. My dad liquid damaged it months ago with a juice spill but the tablet still functions after letting it sit and dry for months.
Few weeks ago i started trying to fix it testing to see what works and doesn't.
From testing
Battery is fine (swapped it with a new one to make sure)
motherboard/daughterboards were fine after doing an alcohol dip/clean
the tablet charges, power/home/vol buttons work fine
and the SD card slot works perfectly.
The screen however...
still flickers. I read in a forum post on xda ( cant find it right now ) that the screen backlight issues were caused by the metal connectors on the motherboard being cracked and battery connector not making good contact.
I ordered a battery and new motherboard to swap them out since i suck at soldering. neither of these fixed the issue.
what I noticed with both batteries and both motherboards-- the screen on the bottom right side and along the softkeys overheat like crazy... like you could scramble an egg on it.
i thought it was the charger port -- (removed it) it wasn't the issue.
theres this space under the plastic framing for the screen that gets hot and im not sure why.
Do you guys think its the screen? or should I replace something else?
A new screen with the frame costs 125$ (if theres a better tablet for that price please let me know because id rather put money towards that instead)
Thank you

The screen is most likely just old. Mine glitches too (SM-T320), but by the looks of it that's the LCD and not the backlight. Otherwise, this tablet is about 6 years old by now so it makes sense it's doing weird stuff sometimes. About the "overheating", on the Snapdragon 800 SoC, it's completely normal to hit high temperatures under load. This is also specified in the manual as normal and not a defect. If you're really paranoid about this you could get some new thermal pads and place those on the chips/RF shields.
I recommend you to get a new tablet altogether since this one barely keeps up with browsing on the XDA forum. You'd be looking at something like a Lenovo Tab M8 (ZA5F0007SE). Specs can be found using the search term "Lenovo Tab M8 (FHD)". One minor downside is the lack of USB-C.

I didn't know that. I thought they all shipped with a SD800. Anyways, that one is a bad SoC too (in comparison with modern low end SoCs).

Nexus 7 3G Defects - here!

Hello people!
As we all know the nexus 7 32gb 3G has shipped!, This is for everyone who has the Nexus 7 -3G- version only!
Do you have an issue with anything of your nexus 7 components (screen issues - build issues - speaker, etc ...) that are found on the previous builds of the nexus 7 non 3G ?
Did you guys find something that you like or you feel is better than the one with the previous build or non 3G (if you own a non 3G nexus)
like say, Faster, snppier, better graphics, performance etc ..
Sorry for my not so bad English
Just had 2 3Gs arrive to replace my old 16Gb wifis
Both perfect in every way, (Saying that so were my wifis)
Only comment is (Are google trying to get apple to sue them over the sim removal tool!!!)

Wow, lucky you that you got yours so fast! I am really hoping mine doesn't have the screen flicker when it arrives. I'll edit this post once I receive mine.

Oh the reason Google are stating that Cases for the wifi nexus 7 are not compatible with the 3G version is that the Mic has moved due to the microsim slot so the flap on the cases covers trhe mic on the 3G version.

This seems a little pessimistic to me. Why assume they are going to have tons of defects? Won't google/asus have learned from the mistakes they made with the early wifis?
I didn't mean to be pessimistic at all .. just scared of that feeling when you wait so badly for that shiny device that you ever wanted but only to figure out that you have to sooooo lucky to get a (well-made) one without any defect !! I hate QC.
i see the need for this very much,
i just got the 32gb wifi only and maaaann.... the feel to the tab is just...different like the back panel feels...better i cant really explain it the unit feels heavier too.
Got mine this-morning. No defects at all. Why would you expect any? The Wifi version has been out for ages so any major defects would have been caught long ago by the early adopters.
The only "defect" per-se is deciding what the best deal on a SIM card is... 3 is probably the best network... but what one to order? All rather confusing for a poor old mouse brain.

I got mine last night. It has some backlight bleeding and also has these funky faded streaks (hard to explain) on a black screen these streaks give the blacks a washed out appearance. I compared it to my 16GB N7 which I got in Aug and I didn't notice these streaks but do have backlight bleeding on that one. I'm actually getting it replaced for these streaks but I've come to expect and even accept(as long as it's not horrible) backlight bleeding on Asus tablets. Having owned the TF101 (3 of them) the TF201(3 of them) and the infinity I have not came across a single one that didn't have some backlight bleeding to an extent or another. Some having it much worse while others maybe having just a small spot in the corner. But I honestly have not seen a single one (mine or a friend's) that didn't have backlight bleeding to some extent.
Mine has some very slight backlight bleeding, but nothing I'd complain about. Unfortunately, it does have the blown speaker issue...so an RMA replacement is on its way.
I bought a 2nd Nexus 7 3G version and all the issue of my 16gb WiFi are gone... The main problem the light flickering which is gone totally, also the screen is now flat with the bezel finally.
Sent from my Nexus 7 3G
Mine is fine overall. There seems to be some slight backlight bleeding on the left side of the screen, but not major enough to RMA.
Speaker sounds fine too as far as I can tell. The only "issue" I think I can report is that when my tablet has been sleeping for a long time, the mobile data will cut itself back on if it's off. At least the mobile data works though. Anyone else experience this?

I forgot to mention that I have noticed my screen flickering a bit when in 'auto', and depending on the ambient light. It's almost like the screen can't decide where to set itself and is bouncing between 'levels'. The problem seems to go away completely when I just turn off the auto lighting and keep it at minumum (which is how I usually use it). Is this the screen flickering problem everyone keeps talking about?

Just got my replacement an hour ago. Body creaks less, bezel appears slightly more even (although the old one was really even to begin with), and speaker sounds MUCH better. Only slight buzzing from the 'notification' volume bar, default tone, at max. Everything else sounds clear. I'll have to watch the screen to see about flicker. I have noticed it switching levels, but haven't noticed it flicker yet. It also appears to have less light bleeding. So far so good...
Ok guys - I need an opinion. I've had some time to play with my replacement N7, and noticed some odd things. I ran the battery down last night just to make sure it wasn't a dud - got about 10hrs of video (minimum brightness, sound down). It's not as good as my first one, but I don't consider it a dud. However, after it died, I plugged it in. A half hour later, I tried to power it on to collect the batter logs (simple battery logger), and it wouldn't power on. I pressed the power button for 5 sec each time, nothing. No white battery charging logo either...just unresponsive. I kept trying and it finally booted. I think I had to hold the button for 10-15 sec - and the battery was charging and at 10%. Never happened like that with my old one - just a consistent 4 second press to power on. Does this thing need 10% before it will power on? Reading the forums, the power on issue seems to be common. Should I be worried about this? Should I just keep my original unit even though the speakers are bad? I really don't want to end up in the endless replacement loop. Do others here have occasional power up glitches?

[Q] Capacitive Back Button Sensitivity

I noticed that the back capacitive button is not as sensitive as the multi-task capacitive button. At first, I thought I wasn't pressing the back button at the right place, but after testing it, it turns out that the bottom of the lit area requires much more pressure before it registers a touch. I compared it against the multi-task button and the Galaxy Note 3. Unfortunately, it appears that my Galaxy Note 4 capacitive back button does not register touches on the bottom half unless more pressure is used. Interestingly, the back capacitive button responds to the slightest stylus touch.
I do have a Spigen screen protector on, but it does not affect the sensitivity of the multi-task button, so I figure it doesn't affect the back button, either.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Thanks in advance.
I dont feel like mines sensitive enough either sometimes.i have to press twice
I thought I was going crazy staring at every press on the back button. I have the same issue. Have to press it more then once. I just used my spen and noticed that the top of the back button above the arrow does not register a touch. The multitasking button does on the top and bottom.

So is this a hardware issue? Should I return phone?
Sent from the TermiNOTEr 4!
Glad and sad to know that I'm not alone. It looks like a hardware issue to me, but it might be something that affects most of the phones. I'm waiting to see if other people reply to this thread without this issue.
This issue is annoying, but it's not worth exchanging if I receive a unit that's the same, worse, or has a bad screen (I read a review where the reviewer said his unit had dead/stuck pixels near the top, though it could be a review unit concern). I'm going to the Sprint Store to check out the display unit to compare it against mine. If the display unit has a proper back button, then I might consider.
Checked out the display unit and its back button was far more functional. Exchanged mine and the newer one also has a better capacitive back button.

Mine is also not as sensitive as I'm use to. Maybe it's meant to be that way though? It's a possibility Samsung did that to reduce the instances of accidental back button presses, but that's just a wild guess.
That makes sense but why don't we have many people complaining about it? Is this a real issue or people are thinking they are not pressing the button correctly.

I'm sorry to hear about that. I had a Spigen Crystal screen protector on, but it did not affect the sensitivity, as the multi-task button worked perfectly. It was definitely a hardware issue solely. I applied another Spigen Crystal to the new phone and there are no issues (it came in a 3-pack).
I don't think many people are complaining about it because it's only affecting a small percentage.

I don't think that it's intended. When I took it back to the Sprint Store, the sales rep tried it out and instantly recognized that it was defective. The display unit and my new unit both have proper sensitivity.

Well, I'm trying to get my unit replaced for a separate issue(screen is green towards the bottom and pink towards the top), so I will report back. Too bad every store in a 30mi radius is sold out.
Put it on "glove" mode ... helped mine
This ....
Same Issue Here
I am having the exact same problem with the back button... my struggles with getting it to work properly led me to search for others with the same issue. I'm glad that I am reading that it is not all the devices and that exchanging the Note 4 for a new one may solve the problem, as it did for a previous poster. It is frustrating that the local Verizon store does not have them in stock, and doesn't know when they will... so I guess I'll wait it out - kills the high of getting to play with/setup the new Note 4...:
OK I exchanged mine today will report back. So far it seems a bit better but not by much. Also replaced phone and got one with a gap. Oh well rather gap then a bad back button.

What kind of gap does your new phone have?
I have seen that screen uniformity issue in both the Note 3 and the Note 4. As far as I can tell, every Note 4 is going to have it to some degree. I was pretty upset about it with the Note 3 and exchanged it for one that wasn't as bad. I noticed it on 3 Note 4s, with some being worse than others. I hope you're able to get an improved one!

The gap is around the top left corner. Not bad but the first one I had was pretty much gap free. Doesn't really matter that much cause I have a case that covers it. Out of sight out of mind. So the back button seems to be better with new note. Glad I made the exchange. The only thing is that I lost my glass screen protector. Didn't want to take it off cause it would be useless to me anyways. So I applied a screen protector from my note 2. Works great covered the entire screen. The only thing it doesn't reach to the top. Just something to hold me over until I get some news ones. Also this phone seems to be much quicker than the last one. Could be a placebo effect. I also lucked on a new charger and spen tips. Guy at best buy left charger and tips. I just exchanged phone.

S-PEN feels loose

I'vehad the Note 4 for a few days and the S-Pen feels quite loose to me. It can even move around a 1mm when in its silo.
I compared it to my friends Note 3 and it felt very tight. It also feels much more tight when inserted with no movement.
Anyone with the same problem?
I'm just concerned that it will get only worse.

Try putting the pen in with the button facing down. Seems if it's facing up, it does jiggle a little.
It actually feels more firm with button facing down. But it doesn't solve the problem completely in my case
lol, same story here. just wanted to create a tread...
i have 3 note4's at the moment (due to display problems): 2 of them have loose spen, at one device it sits tight like on my note3!
a solution is to put one or two layers of transparent tape around the silver end of the s-pen, although i do not prefer this method
as it looks not good...
I decided to return my device on Thursday since it was actually bothering me, but funny thing is Samsung is still claiming it is not a defect and studying my case. They even went as far as show me another unit with the same problem.
I really hope upcoming batches will have it ironed out.
Does anyone know a solution in fixing the loose s-pen? The one with tape doesn't work out well, and is not really aesthetic...
Have you tried comparong inserting the S-Pen with the button facing up and facing down? I had the same problem on my 10.1 2014 and it was much tighter when the button was facing down in the case. I know it's not a solution, but it might help.

Do about 20 jumping jax with phone in hand. If the spen slips out of place its a defect.
You could then argue it has s heath and should allow you to run with device.
Mine is snug, my Note 3 was a bit loose but it never fell out or anything. I guess if it's inside the silo and doesn't slip out with normal usage it's not a defect.
i added now one layer (one wrung around) of clear tape (which i do not like aesthetically!!), and now the spen sits tight.
button up or down didn't change anything for me...
now, with the pen tight, the device feels a lot more "solid", so for me the loose pen is a defect...
maybe adding a point of glue would also do the trick, i will experiment a little with that...

Can someone define 'loose s pen'? I put mine in pressed in all the way. If I wiggle my finger on it, it slight jiggles, but not to the point where it falls off. I have never noticed this on any note before. I wouldn't say its a defect, but more of an annoyance.

S Pen included with my Note 4
Hi i have 2 seperate questions about the S Pen. 1st. Has anyone removed the button on the pen to try to adjust the potentiometers for sending the pen thinner or thicker? I saw a pic of a note 4 S Pen with the button removed on this forum somewhere 2 days ago & it showed the pen having 2 round very small adjustable screw like things & they where explaining which way to turn the front one to adjust it, but I removed my button just to look at it & in my S Pen there is no adjustment mechanisms at all & there's only one round thing total so I'm just curious to see whether it's the same for all note 4 buyers or not?
2nd. I thought I heard something about Samsung developing & very soon making available for sale a newer updated S Pen for the note 4 & note edge to include Rotation & Tilt which was originally supposed to be included with both phones on release days of each. Does anyone know any info at all about this?

Do you have hardware problems? (POLL)

The phone has been out for most of us just little over a month and there have been many reports about front/rear glass cracking, so now I made this poll to see how many people actually have/had problems with their device.
Please note that this poll is only about hardware problems, so don't vote yes if you only had software related problems, thank you.
To be clear:
Vote yes: If you had glass cracking (with/without) a reason, flaps not closing properly, phone not being waterproof, etc
Vote no: If you had no problems, software related problems
Bump!
Don't forget to vote!
I voted yes due to a way too sensitive touchscreen - putting a screenprotector on however solves the problem, but I take it that it is the out of the box product we have to vote about...
(To the - right now 13 persons - who have voted no - does this also mean that you don't have the popping issue when pressing the screen? Or is this looked at as a feature...? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JrfMjiNB9E)
Nope. I've had nothing wrong with the phone, no "popping", no "glass breaking" even though I accidentally did drop it today.
Nothing. I'm convinced most of you are playing baseball with your phones, or just being extremely picky.
Not any problem at all. This phone lives up to its expectations but i also keep it protected with case though.
i had the phone for 3 weeks. i bought a magnetic charger and was using that. last week i went to take the charger off the phone and the whole magnetic charging "module" came out of the phone with the charger. it's currently back at sony for repair - i'm really hoping they just send me a new one though. that was a fun discovery. anyway, no problems with glass or anything like that in the time i had it, though.
Not a single problem so far.
Btw, good initiative!
However, I think that since only people with glass issues post that on the forum, it's not surprising that it looks as if it's a major problem.

Yeah, that's the main reason why I made this poll, due to so 'many' people reporting issues with their phones it might scare people off that intend to buy the phone.

Hmmm could there be a connection between the popping screens and the very sensitive screens? Mine has the popping and also a screen that sometimes during internet scrolling has a life of its own speedscrolling up to the top of homepages when lifting the finger from the screen - an issue I have never ever had before on any of my many previus phones...???

hello,
"Z3 Compact" bought the 28.09.2014. The phone is turned off itself in the middle of the day in my pocket. The battery level was approx. 75% => Black screen, not even light on the charger...:S
The Sony support told me to send them with charger and usb cable.
I am waiting for news... approx. 10 days...
NO issues so far... put a tempered glass screen protector on the phone pretty soon after buying it, but I never saw any screen popping or "life of its own" syndrom while I had the screen unprotected.
no issues so far , i had some bad experience with singapore firmware , but its all good now (using latest brazil firmware).
i did drop it a week ago , tempered glass cracked abit , phone also got abit of a spank on the top right corner, still water proof.
all good just no ****ing root
Sudden Death after two weeks.
Had this awesome phone since October 3rd. All fine and dandy till now, the vibration would work sometimes. It comes and goes but it's no biggie, I can live with it!
Gyroscope defect
Yes.
I had the phone for only 3 days and the phone suddenly stop rotating. I did a factory restore and even trying running the system test. Compass test tells me function is not available. Sony says it might be a hardware issue so I had to send it to Sony to get it fixed.
My mic has become strange. People say that I sound like I'm a mila away from it.

Screen cracked for no reason

I'm seating at my desk with my phone on my side over the mousepad and after hearing a very faint "pop" sound I notice there is a very clean single crack running from the top to the bottom of the screen. The phone was bought a month ago, never dropped, and it was not even being touched when it cracked. What could be the reason? Some type or thermal stress or just a manufacturing defect?
At the moment I'm living in a country without official Xiaomi support (Japan), is there anything I can do about it?
I'm quite surprised by what happened and I have never heard of a screen on a new phone cracking for no apparent reason.

I once put a Sony MP3 player at the window, in winter. At the morning it was cracked. I gotowe beating from my dad for breaking the christmas gify a dat after receiving it. Still wish these days came back though.
It's probably a manufacturing defect. Where did you buy the phone? You could try explaining the situation, but I think it would be a huge hassle, just take your loss and spend $30 on a new display.

I need only the digitizer, the LCD itself looks fine. Would it still not work well? I have never replaced a digitizer (or a screen) by myself, but on such a cheap phone I may as well try. Or is it an almost impossible task and I should just replace the whole screen assembly?
Also, isn't there a software setting for calibrating the digitizer? Using it can't I get the original performance?
I bought a €20 full hd screen for my Ascend P7 and it looked the same as the original. $30 is a normal price for a phone LCD, only OLED displays are much more expensive (another reason to avoid OLED screens on phones)

Replacement screens usually look rubbish and have ghost touches in the digitalizer

Not recommended, you save maybe 20$, but you still risk breaking your screen and having to wait another 3 weeks on a new one.
