Screen cracked for no reason - Xiaomi Mi A1 Questions & Answers

I'm seating at my desk with my phone on my side over the mousepad and after hearing a very faint "pop" sound I notice there is a very clean single crack running from the top to the bottom of the screen. The phone was bought a month ago, never dropped, and it was not even being touched when it cracked. What could be the reason? Some type or thermal stress or just a manufacturing defect?
At the moment I'm living in a country without official Xiaomi support (Japan), is there anything I can do about it?
I'm quite surprised by what happened and I have never heard of a screen on a new phone cracking for no apparent reason.

I once put a Sony MP3 player at the window, in winter. At the morning it was cracked. I gotowe beating from my dad for breaking the christmas gify a dat after receiving it. Still wish these days came back though.

It's probably a manufacturing defect. Where did you buy the phone? You could try explaining the situation, but I think it would be a huge hassle, just take your loss and spend $30 on a new display.

Thank you for the suggestions.

I need only the digitizer, the LCD itself looks fine. Would it still not work well? I have never replaced a digitizer (or a screen) by myself, but on such a cheap phone I may as well try. Or is it an almost impossible task and I should just replace the whole screen assembly?
Also, isn't there a software setting for calibrating the digitizer? Using it can't I get the original performance?

I bought a €20 full hd screen for my Ascend P7 and it looked the same as the original. $30 is a normal price for a phone LCD, only OLED displays are much more expensive (another reason to avoid OLED screens on phones)

Not recommended, you save maybe 20$, but you still risk breaking your screen and having to wait another 3 weeks on a new one.

Question about HD2 screen and digitizer change

Hello,
i cracked my HD2 screen (digitizer), i purchased new one, but the cracked one was working and i was not in a hurry to change it. After a minor drop, the LCD touch screen cracked under the cracked digitizer and now i have black screen...
Now also i have to purchase LCD screen, but i saw that there is ready to use screen+digitizer(and of course more expensive than screen and digitizer alone) .
My question is - what will be easier to change - ready to use digitizer + screen, screen and digitizer alone or there is no difference. I'm asking this, because I'm wondering should i sell the digitizer (if i can) and buy the ready to use screen+digitizer, or to purchase the screen and to use it with the already received digitizer.
If you can afford it you have to go with the all in one. Too much can go wrong during assembly and you should avoid it if you can.
yup, separating and installing them separately is a pain in the arse, its always better to do it in the one job if you can afford the initial high cost. My LCD panel needs replaced due to light bleeding, but I cant be arsed, the digitiser is likely to fail in the future anyway being an HD2 so ill wait and just do the two of them together.
OK, thank you.
I've watched 2 or 3 "how to change digitizer" videos. Is there a video for changing the lcd+digitizer or its the same as the digitizer change? I have to disassemble the whole phone to change the digitizer...

there is a vid somewhere, ill have a look later, but essentially yes. you need to remove the whole lot, the only difference between doing them both and doing them separately is that the two panels are stuck to each other, and its that process of separating or putting back together that's really tricky and people have ended up damaging one or the other trying it.
What about the difference in the EU and T-Mobile versions, like in the digitizer (soldering and insertion) Is there a difference too, if i take the whole "pack" (LCD + Digitizer) and what should i look for if there is a difference?

If you buy combo(LCD+digitizer) there's no problem to replace it to whatever version of HD2 you own: combo is interchangeable on both versions!
OK, Thank you!
I'm asking because i asked some buyers on ebay, and they told me "Sorry, my friend, but this is for T-mobile version" But on the pictures, they are all the same.
I had my EU hd2 digitizer changed too when it was broken, and when it was changed to a tmous replacement, they couldn't get the promixity sensor working.
Now I dunno if that's a defect from the screen or because it's a incompatility problem, but a further gsensor-working-in-wm6-but-not-in-android-problem in my other replacement mashup hd2 hybrid EUTMOUS frankenstein phone suggests that some parts may not be interchangeable.
You should just make sure that it's a EU digitizer so you won't run into further problems.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA
But on a already assembled combo pack (LCD + digitizer) how to know if the digitizer is EU version, beside the T-mobile logo.

I doubt it's a relationship between digitizer and g-sensor/proximity sensor...

Let me clarify that; my hd2 EU first had its digitizer+LCD replaced with a TMOUS version, and the proximity sensor stopped working,
then the the mobo was replaced by a tmous mobo in the same EU housing and the accelerometer and magnetometer does not work properly (accelerometer works in wm6.5 but not android), but the proximity sensor worked.
It's not just me having a hardware replacement problem, there's a significant amount of posts by other users about replacement parts not working properly. So everyone should be at least very cautious about using them because replacing with other parts may cause other problems.
my buddys HD2's touch screen suddenly stopped working.
he gave me the phone for $50.
i guess ima have to do lil work
I need some help with choosing the combo
Which one should i take and why on one the second item there are those big cable-like things.
N1 - http://www.ebay.com/itm/LCD-and-DIG...ccessories&hash=item43adebdc7d#ht_3076wt_1110
N2 - http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-lcd-Tou...ltDomain_0&hash=item3a67e44659#ht_2175wt_1344
Will i need to solder them together or they are already soldered (welded junction or whatever)
Thank you!
Anybody?

Both versions are OK, but I would choose the first one.
There's no need for soldering(vers. 2): it's more like a packaging thing in order to get it mounted on chassis.

I guess its because you/they lost the little glasses that connect the display and the sensor.
Its easy to loose them as they fall out after you take the screen from the housing.
I lost them a few seconds ago and think that i know what wont work when i reassemble
@topic
there is generally no problem removing display from touchscrren. just make it hot with a fan or oven ~80°C is okay. and with a flat knive or iron-wire go for the glue.
If you do this you need new glue-tape. Mostly you get this from china very cheap but takes a while.
If your screen is broken now i would recommend to take a combi pack as you have no glueing, no alignment problems and so on.
its not very hard but kills some time and nerves ;D
OK, so lets do a round up, before i make the purcahse, so I'm sure i will make the right choice.
I'm going to buy this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/LCD-and-DIG...ccessories&hash=item43adebdc7d#ht_3076wt_1110
because its already assembled and much easier to use and IT WILL FIX on my EU version of the phone (Not US T-Mobile)
Only YES or NO will be enough

The Eu-HD2 is soldered isnt it? This version, from the picture, is the pluged version....
Im not sure because if you change the display also the connector type could be irrelevant.
But if this is the screen from Tmous-HD2, i remember that it was a bit bigger? Is it just the housing or also the display?
=>
Dont buy before this is clear!
(i would open my hd2, look what connector type is inside and buy that one just to be sure...)
And some advise: Try to glue the flex cable from the touchscreen(the one that goes under the end call button reallly close to the display)
This could help to improve the life-span of the cable as its not flexed every time you push the button(try when you hold it in your hands by putting the buttons in the frame and push it, if it flexes the cable fix that!!!)
Otherwise the cable will break one day and the wires will disconnect=> typical problem of not responding touchscreen

[Q] Nexus 7 with a broken screen

Hello everyone, My nexus 7 has a crack-line in the screen and only one half of the touch screen is responding, My question is: Where can I buy a new screen + 'digitizer' (Think that will be needed no?!) for a cheap price?, And is it hard to fix it myself? The warranty wants me to pay 233 Euro (303 Dollar) to fix the screen, But man... That's almost the price for a new unit (249 Euro), (323.87 Dollar). I hate Asus now!

You can buy an assembly on Ebay for around 65 Euros. They maybe surplus stock, but work just as well. Changing it is not that hard. All you need to do is look for a a tutorial on youtube, and follow the instructions closely.

That's also very true, especially the word "patience". I'd add that you should have experience working on this before. Otherwise, 99 times out of 100, something would go wrong. But since you have nothing to lose anyway, why not take a crack at it and have fun while doing it?

Yes but only one half of the touch screen is responding (Above the line) the other half is not responding to touch input, So don't I need a new digitizer too? And the Ebay link, I can't seem to order that because I can only choose Canada or the VS and I live in Belgium!
PS: Here is a picture of the unit: https://www.dropbox.com/s/kqjaz9zuy2ppep2/IMG_20130628_121635.bmp
Hi there,
it seems that the digitizer (glass with touch layer) is broken. The LCD seems to be ok. You have four ways to proceed:
1. Sell the unit and wait for the next Nexus 7 (but you'll only get around 50-70US$ for your broken unit) - RISK OF NOT GETTING A GOOD PRICE
2. Let it be fixed by a pro and pay 150US$ or more for that - RISK OF PAYING TOO MUCH
3. Get a LCD/Digitizer combo (often not originals) from Ebay (click for the right search on Belgium's ebay) or Aliexpress and replace the whole unit yourself. That costs around 75 to 90US$ at the moment. It's relatively easy to do it by yourself. If you're not left-handed you can fix that in 30 minutes, with only a little screwdriver and a guitar plectrum. See here how it is done: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtIFkIKtYf8 - RISK OF GETTING A BAD REPLACEMENT COMBO, NEARLY NO RISK TO FIX IT YOURSELF
4. Buy only the digitizer (glass with touchscreen functionality for 30US$ from aliexpress or Ebay (click for the right search on Belgium's ebay) and try it the long way. For that you have to separate the broken digitizer from the working LCD. They are glued together, but there is a way to remove it. See my posts here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2337288 and in the linked thread. Be very carefull and take your time if you want to do this. Read all the related posts and only order the glass after successful separation, cleaning and test (you don't want a digitizer glass after you ruined the LCD...). This whole operation will take you some time and preparation. Beside the digitizer you'll need some cleaning liquid (around 5$) and some adhesive (glue or tape) to stick the LCD back to the glass. I think it's possible to glue it only on the edges, but I am still waiting for my glass to try it out... - RISK OF GETTING A BAD REPLACEMENT DIGITIZER, TO LOOSE A LOT OF TIME AND RISK OF RUINING THE LCD WHILE TRYING TO SEPARATE OR CLEAN IT (WHAT WOULD LEAD TO STEP 3. AGAIN)
Make your choice!
Ah, there is also choice Nr. 5.: Give it away for free. NO RISK!

[Q] Blueish pixels when i touch the screen

Hello, thanks for reading, i bought a refurbished D800 and when i touch the screen i get like some blueish pixels, if i softly touch it no weird stuff appears on the screen. Is it the digitalizer or the LCD panel? does anybody know?, the pictures are attached. Thanks for reading!
Edit: exact same thing happening to this guy (check the video), even tho mine is much more subtle on the spots: http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g2/help/screen-weird-spots-problem-t2907316
My brother had the exact same problem with his D802 and in his case it was the battery which was getting bigger and bitter since it was defect. After replacing the battery, the problem was gone.
Since you bought a refubished phone, I think it could also be a wrong digitizer or LCD which got assemled.

Glass cracked, LCD + touch work, 2/3 home buttons do not work - What to replace

Dropped the phone, boohoo, glass shattered. lcd works fine and so do all touch areas. But the home button and back button do not work along the bottom. My overview/panels button still works.
So what do I need to replace? Will a simple glass replacement/Digitizer on eBay for about $10 restore function to the home and back button?
(as a side note - I think I can root the device + install permanent on screen action buttons right? The free stuff from Google play isn't cutting it)

Good to know they're available. I somehow got a tiny corner chip on mine (no idea how). Thankfully it's small and low enough that it doesn't affect buttons or screen.
Would this basically be it?:
Seems pretty simple as long as I can get my hand on a heating gun.

Yeah that is the one you need
That same seller sent me a message after I paid for the screen, he told me that there was low stock and it will take them about 6 days to restock, I decided to cancel the order and buy it from another seller but it was the same story, there was no stock and it took them around a week to send the screen.
I placed the order on Jan 03, the screen was shipped on Jan 09, and it was delivered on Jan 16.
My phone on stock rom has an issue where the left edge does not work. LeEco said it was a known issue. I literally cannot seek a YouTube video to time 0:00 because it stops responding at about 0:14.
Do you have any issue with YouTube seeking to the beginning with the new screen?

That has no effect for me.
If it is a hardware issue, I would ask LeEco to exchange it or I'll just replace the screen myself. LeEco tells me it is a known issue that I have. Now I am questioning if others have the same issue as me.
Can I assume nobody else has an issue with the screen/digitizer on the left edge, such as when seeking YouTube videos to the beginning?

Hi all,
For those who have change the display for the x720/x727, Have you found any significant difference from the original display? I need to change mine, and I have seen one on aliexpress. Sorry but I can't post the link because of the 10 post limitation.
It has many reviews, being almost all of them positive. But someone tells that there is no light on the capacitive buttons. I'd want to know if you have experienced this issue. Also, in your opinion, has the replacement the same brightness like the original one? Is as responsive as the original one?
Many thanks.

What is wrong with this oneplus 6t screen? (link in thread)

https://vimeo.com/335039371
Bought this phone used. $400 Canadian for a oneplus 6t 256gb hdd and 8gb ram. Note I was told he had the screen replaced. Fingerprint reader also doesn't work. See the lines on the screen? The skinny vertical and thicker one up top running horizontal? It's definitely the screen itself. Perhaps backside of the screen. Note you can only see these lines with black background / phone screen off and only under certain lighting. With phone on and anything other than black you cannot see at all.
Is this a botched screen repair? Fingerprint sensor is on backside of phone. But u need to take off back to disconnected the screen cable at back. And these lines.... Dirty inside of screen or what would you guess???
Probably a screen not made by OnePlus. I've never seen that before.
Return it asap, if you can.

Defo not returning it for $400 Canadian. Phone as is could sell for $600 lol.
I'm just wondering what people think it may be. Like the first reply, likely just a bad screen. Replace it for $50 or whatever and will be all good.
The actual good thing about replacing the screen is you have to take off the back of the phone anyway. And well, while they are back there I can have them check the fingerprint sensor. Maybe the ribbon cable is just loose. Could fix both things in one shot.....
If fingerprint readers are available online and are like $20 then to be honest, I could just buy now and bring with me when I go back to screen repair....

Then sell asap. OP7 is few days away, I believe. You can already score 6t used on eBay for $450-500 USD if you are patient. Your potential profit will only get smaller once 7s are released and the repair costs associated with your phone.

Also, genuine OP 6t screen replacement by OP is around $143 USD (screen is $90, plus taxes, shipping and handling).
Don't know about FP reader.

Yeah. All considered. It's very close and probably bordering an even deal for the hassle. $500 USD is $675 CAD (for reference). I paid essentially $300USD for the phone. And ya, official repairs is what I'm looking into. 7 day turnaround or so and then like $130USD or so. Will end up being around $450USD and some wait.
Hmm
oh and researching more i actually believe the fingerprint reader is fine. Probably does not work because of non official screen. If it were bad though, it's a $20 part and wouldn't charge extra labor, apparently
My s8 had marks like that. It was from the wallet case and cards I had in it.

It's not a 6T if the FP sensor is on the back of the phone.

OMG! You may have nailed it. I remember the original owner took it out of a wallet case. Did you find any "fix" for this? Rubbing alcohol or anything?????

I've read though that even aftermarket screen protectors cause the fingerprint reader to not work. So installing a different screen (not official oneplus) could cause this I'd think. Also to get to the front of the screen and replace it I believe you need to get at the back and take the back off, to disconnect the screen.

I never really looked for a fix but it became barely noticeable once I applied a screen protector

Riiight. Well this is worth a try before I send to oneplus to fix for $200. Or go to town with rubbing alcohol and see.
It's almost like screen burn in on a tv. But physically. On the phone layer so you'd think you could fix it...
I'm gonna text the guy to confirm. But there must be a way. I'll google.

If the sensor is on the back of the phone; it's not a 6T.
It might be a 6, but a 6T has the fingerprint sensor under the screen.

1:16 of this replacement video shows that the fingerprint sensor is connected/disconnected on the backside of the phone underneath the battery.

I guess what I meant is where you connect or disconnect the fingerprint reader, where you were reading it as where the actual sensor is

He didn't say connected on the back of the phone, but that the sensor was on the back of the phone.
Anyway if it's reporting right my interpretation of what he said doesn't matter.

Yeah haha. You were not wrong here. We just misinterpreted each other. The actual sensor vs where it connects ?

I tried a bunch of stuff to try and rid of the perma smudge or whatever you wanna call it, with no luck. I can see why a screen protector would fix this though as you can only see the lines in reflective lighting. A screen protector usually limits glare. I think this is the way to go vs a $200 screen repair ?
