Before I updated, I remember noticing the background image in the Gallery application always showed distinct color banding (associated with the 16-bit colors, I would assume). I just applied the update and opened the gallery, and the background doesn't exhibit the same color banding now! I'm wondering... did HTC up the color depth to 24-bits?
In looking for a test image, I came across this website:
www . lagom . nl/lcd-test/gradient.php (sorry can't link yet)
If you view it on your Evo, it shows up as a smooth image (similar to what I see on my desktop)! If you drag the page though, it shows color banding...
So my question is: Did this update bring us up to 24-bit color, or is there some sort of dithering being applied to "spoof" the look of a higher color depth?
I heard jboots got nerfed.
The screen does look better, bandung is gone.
seems pretty doubtful although i was shocked to see that the gradients looked better then my laptop, but when you move it around, the gradients show really bad banding, its probably some dithering trick, it does however look very nice

What is jboots
Dotta love them 65k color. HTC really cheaped out in terms of the display.
I haven't updated yet and I know what you're talking about as I've seen the banding before but just launching the gallery right now doesn't exhibit this behavior. I know I've seen it do that before. Anyone know what steps to take exactly so I can confirm the problem exists before I apply the update?

The camera in low light is definately improved. It's faster on focus and a sharper.
The action once the button is pressed to take the picture is much quicker. So it is an improvement.

Check out the "link" in the OP and see what it looks like before you update. Note especially the behavior/look of the gradient image when you drag the page.
Wonder if improved color depth is why they deleted the "Android" wallpapers with this release. Maybe they were 16-bit color depth.

If it weren't for you guys I wouldn't have noticed it so quickly.
The way I can tell something on the display looks better is when you go to the weather widget. The background isn't as spotty where it faded to a light gray/white color from the darker gray around it. It's MUCH SMOOTHER.
In fact, a week or so ago I noticed how ****ty it looked. Wow looks wayyyyy better now.
Man yall are gonna convince me to unroot and update.. I cant though I need my wifi tether.
There's some kind of funny business going on here... If you go into the camera, and then hit the Gallery button from within there, immediately when the Gallery shows up the background looks crappy and banded again, but once the pictures pop up, it's smooth. If you bounce back into the camera for a few seconds, and then back into the Gallery it'll do the same thing again.
Something is wrong with my dithering.
MOAR DOTS!
This allows you to adjust the RGB Screen Colors. Check it out. Works on my EVO:

What are your settings?
I only got Force Closes when trying it out...
This has been around forever, I also got Fc's trying to use it.
I have CM6 RC 2, works fine
just was wondering the setting people with EVO's are changing them to
This is built in Cyanogen Mod too.
Settings/user interface/render effect.
Can also be applied as a widget.
It helps a good bit, if you compare non-calibrated and calibrated, without calibration the colors look too washed out and not as dark and deep.

i want dark and deep, what are the settings to get it like that?
Well, this adjusts RBG but it doesn't adjust contrast for blacker blacks or color saturation. Basically what it will do is make your colors either warmer or cooler. Just play with it till you find one you like. If you want a more 3d effect, choose wallpapers in soft focus (or do it yourself using Photoshop) and icons will appear to "float" above the background.

That **** sure says a lot....
Sorry, I had to. lol. Neat app!
thats pretty cool
I just tried the built in app in CM6.1 and it really gives my EVO a different look. Im using the N1 Low setting.
I find just N1 Calibrated (not cool or red) works best. It really does make a good bit of difference too, try watching a video with it off and it on. The colors feel a bit richer and more natural with the calibration.
I couldn't go back to keeping the default settings anymore
I agree that N1 is best on my EVO. Seems to make the blacks blacker which always makes the screen appear to "pop" more.
However, these are pre-settings. Wit the tweak I mentioned in the OP it is completely customizable. Anyway, whatever works for you.
Posted this in the other thread, but does anyone else get a green hue when scrolling (it's easiest to see in something like the "settings" menu when you scroll).
Any idea if this is correctable?
Hello xda,
Im currently using the rom on my signature which runs close to perfect. But I want to know why and how can I fix the ugly pixelated graphics and widgets in the rom. Is not a specific rom issue since all NAND roms i've tried have that problem. Back in SD this issue was fixed and graphics looked perfect. How can I achieve that sharp and nice look?
Thank you all, this community is amazing.

do you have a screenshot at all to show us? Maybe a photo of the screen from another camera if that is easier?
Here's a screenshot with music and calendar widget.
Notice the ugly pixels and blocky look.
Edit. Actually don't know why drocap won't show it. But all of you who have nand open those widgets and you'll see what i mean
sorry dude... it looks normal... and looks totally fine on mine, I have a Telstra HD2 (512ROM) tried the CM and Desire and MIUI based ones, they all work great on mine, no odd looking pixels

Maybe that issue caused by image compression ... I think.
The rendering of widgets can be affected heavily by the launcher. I've heard suggestion that Launcher Pro will get rid of that problem. Worth a try since you just uninstall it if it doesn't fix it.
If it is down to the launcher, there's not going to be any fix for you, other than hope that there's an update to the launcher you use, that addresses the issue.
Thank you all for your answers. Will try another launcher and see.
I installed launcher pro (free) and tried it in the beginning with MDJ 2.6 G-bread nand version... I noticed pixelated widgets but kind of did not care. I also installed bunch of things after 1st boot and started using the phone. Among other apps it was ADWlauncher EX which I paid... I rebooted after that once for different reason and once it booted up again I literally noticed huge bump in how smooth and fluid motion was with this launcher - pixelation was also gone and I do not know whether it was launcher that made it that way - but I definitely love it
I know what he is talking about. I try to avoid widgets with that ugly looking thing. Which is why I'm currently using transparent widgets.
These screenshots have been taken with this app called "shoot me" As you can seen, they look perfectly fine
But, now look at these pictures taken with my digital camera

Looking at the pics you posted I believe this is the banding problem alot have referred too caused by the 65k limitation on the screen.. Yes it is capable of 262k but the devs haven't figured out how to unlock it yet.. Winmo say it's a software limitation.. Hope this is a lil explanation.. The reason your screen shot doesn't show it, is cause android itself isn't limited to 65k colors only the screen is (currently)..

Hi, can you update us on whether this has worked for you?
I'm facing this problem too, and I'm still keeping the power control widget even though the pixelated one looks very ugly..
I've got used for black/dark background in several years.
But in reviews of SGS4 i see that many apps/settings have white background. I just wonder if there is kind of theme switch in SGS4 to get already convenient black background or now we are stuck to white now?

The switch is called ROOT and Custom Rom.
I'm wondering the same thing. Given that the S4 sticks with Super AMOLED, this seems like a poor decision -- this white theme. Unless, of course, there's some sort of theming taking place, which I doubt else it would've been taken note of during launch. Although they can still change things from now until April 25...
I really hope we can change this white without custom ROM.

where can we get those custom ROMs? Thanks a lot.

You would have to edit every apk for each app you want to change and make them use the device.default theme / halo theme instead of the device.default.light / halo.light

It is because the black/dark theme was the biggest **** ever. Amoleds aren't the brightest and gray text on black background ...... Seriously??? The inbox was virtually unreadable. While emails were unread they had white text on black background and that was OK. Once read they were some tone of gray on black background. In the car and outside it was impossible to make out anything. I had a shortcut on my home screen to enable the accessibility /negative colours specifically so I could read my inbox when it was it too bright where I was.
Admittedly they should just give you the option for me the bright theme is a very welcome change.

I believe what you are talking about is on only on the US variants. I have a i9500 and all the menus are black just like the GS3/Note 2.

how do you know they're not comparing their early unit with the latest octa?
look it up on GSMArena, they had one of those early units with the white background, and then when they got the final one with the black backgrounds they did their tests and reviewed their review of the early unit. I still am pretty sure the latest firmwares do not have white backgrounds. look at the XDA post your battery results thread for example, all black.
I don't know why you're being so rude. do YOU have a store bought S4 with a white background?

Hello everyone, I was wondering if our device can display true black. Just wondering as I am wanting the status bar and navbar to kinda blend in with the rest of the phone if you know what I mean. It would make it look even sexier than it already does.
