Why backgrounds in SGS4 are write? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've got used for black/dark background in several years.
But in reviews of SGS4 i see that many apps/settings have white background. I just wonder if there is kind of theme switch in SGS4 to get already convenient black background or now we are stuck to white now?

The switch is called ROOT and Custom Rom.

I'm wondering the same thing. Given that the S4 sticks with Super AMOLED, this seems like a poor decision -- this white theme. Unless, of course, there's some sort of theming taking place, which I doubt else it would've been taken note of during launch. Although they can still change things from now until April 25...
I really hope we can change this white without custom ROM.

where can we get those custom ROMs? Thanks a lot.

You would have to edit every apk for each app you want to change and make them use the device.default theme / halo theme instead of the device.default.light / halo.light

It is because the black/dark theme was the biggest **** ever. Amoleds aren't the brightest and gray text on black background ...... Seriously??? The inbox was virtually unreadable. While emails were unread they had white text on black background and that was OK. Once read they were some tone of gray on black background. In the car and outside it was impossible to make out anything. I had a shortcut on my home screen to enable the accessibility /negative colours specifically so I could read my inbox when it was it too bright where I was.
Admittedly they should just give you the option for me the bright theme is a very welcome change.

how do you know they're not comparing their early unit with the latest octa?
look it up on GSMArena, they had one of those early units with the white background, and then when they got the final one with the black backgrounds they did their tests and reviewed their review of the early unit. I still am pretty sure the latest firmwares do not have white backgrounds. look at the XDA post your battery results thread for example, all black.
I don't know why you're being so rude. do YOU have a store bought S4 with a white background?

[Q] Would you be interested in this theme?

Just trying to see if anyone would be interested in this mockup so I know if I should bother making it.
Edited together quickly for mockup purposes.
"Gloss" type effect colors seem off, but shall be perfected and the icons have lost there gradient effect currently
I think it would be interesting to see a white glossy theme.
Would look good on OpenDesire!
Very interested. Please make it
Looks fantastic.
+1.
In my opinion, I'd like to see it strictly black/white with minimal colour.

With a black circle battery and numbers changing colors, instead of the circle changing colors the same way Fightspit super circle type D does, it would be a killing theme.

Inconsistent removal of Blue in 4.4

I was playing around with 4.4 sdk image and the one 4.4 rom for the nexus 7 and I can't help but dislike the inconsistant removal of blue in the UI. I think they should have just got rid of it on the status bar but left the rest, or done a better job removing it all. I lean more towards keeping everything but the statusbar. Anyone else notice this?
If is not much trouble, can you post some pictures of it? For those like me that haven't update to 4.4 yet. I'm waiting for the official, not those Kit Kat ROMs that are in developer forums(nothing agaisn't btw).
I'm not ready to say goodbye to blue

Finally this blue crap is away.
The Sony Tablet Z doesn't have the blue and the UI looks gorgeous, much better than the original Android one.
On my N7 I modded the statusbar via Xposed so that the elements that were previously blue are now white / grey. Looks far more classy.
Blue is only for those low-taste people who also use blue-lighted fans in their desktop PCs

Another one who prefers the blue here. The UI change IMO overall is nice but there are some bits which look as though we are taking the UI back to gingerbread times.

There are many replacement dialers on the PlayStore. There's even one called KitKat dialer that gives you the KitKat basics. However, the best AOSP mimic I have found (I really don't like the KitKat dialer changes much) is ExDialer. There's a theme for it that matches the AOSP dialer very well, and it has quite a lot of customization options.
You'll not be able to entirely replace the Touchwiz Dialer without borking the system, so it's best not to try.

For me, I find that the dark blue is difficult to read, given that it has a much lower contrast ratio to black, and when I consider the fact that blue pixels in the matrix burn out literally 10x faster than any the others and use more power while they are doing it, the desire for a blue accented theme vanishes entirely.

It is, unless themed, and I was just saying that I think it's a stupid choice from a design perspective, for all the reasons I mentioned above. I was actually encouraged by the move away from the blue highlighting in KitKat, but it seems that it's beginning to trickle back in.

Definitely agree, KitKat and White is much better. One of the first things I do is change the status bar to white. Jellybeans, has a KitKat UI, but, it doesn't change the dialer.

all white theme on 5.0 lollipop?

Seeing some of the review videos on lollipop, including the Nexus 6 review, EVERYTHING is white on lollipop! The notification drop down, the background for all settings, and even the app drawer!
http://link.tapatalk.com/api/click?...rs.com&subid=cfcd208495d565ef66e7dff9f98764da
Besides being ugly as sin, that's going to be a significant drain on the battery! With the nexus 6 using an amoled display, why would they implement something so counterintuitive? One of the beauties of the moto x is how all the menus, app drawer etc look so elegant in black. On top of saving display energy usage.
I've searched everywhere looking to see if the theme would be customizable and there's nothing to suggest so. Comments?
I wouldn't worry about it. I don't think anyone spends a big amount of time in the notification area, drawer, or in the settings

There is an xposed module to convert white holo to dark, and probably it will convert white material to dark. On LCD white looks better but on AMOLED I prefer dark too
Afaik there will be dark theme for amoled.

Well it doesn't take an engineer to know a light background that requires an amoled screen to display uses more energy than a dark one where the pixels shut off. But that's that I suppose..
I'm running the latest preview on my N5. Yeah, it's white. Battery life? Much improved. Surprisingly so. I've no doubt the improvement in battery life will carry over to the X. I know there isn't a whole lot of room for improvement in performance on the X but it has made a startlingly difference on my N5. Sucks your not a fan of the design but for those of us that like it, it's an amazing upgrade. One I can't wait to experience on my X.
Edit: I understand your concern that the difference in display technologies will make the improvement in battery life mute but I can't imagine white backgrounds making that big a difference.

I'm not. edit: there are other factors that decrease battery life. i doubt you're constantly on a white screen for long periods of time. even with it being white, i am still sure amoled consumes less than lcd

i am all for opinions, but the OS being white shouldn't "freak" everyone out if you have AMOLED screens. i interpreted your first post wrong and thought you were very upset to the point where you'll rage , hence why i said some need to relax a bit. i still stand by my opinion that i don't think battery is going to go down the drain. remember Project Volta, maybe that'll help a bit too. good discussion :good:

The battery aspect is secondary to me. It just seems counter intuitive to make a nexus device with an amoled screen and widdle down one of the big benefits of it.
My main concern is IMO its ugly as all hell. Material design looks fantastic. But the white folder type backgrounds reallyblook out of place and dated. Of course others may love it. I just hope/wish they give an option for a dark theme..

i am on the fence with it. i agree, white isn't a good color, but idk if black would be a matching color for the home screen. heck, why doesn't Google just allow us to change the background app drawer page to whatever color we want. problem solved . looks like i will just have to endure the white (at least it isn't completely hideous lol)
Material Design is gorgeous. My eyes will be happy once devs get on top of that, not just Google

Is there any way to darken the lollipop UI to take advantage of the amoled screen?

I have been searching and searching but I cannot find a straight answer for non-aosp TouchWiz phones. Ever since I began using my girlfriend's phone on lollipop I have been blinded by the new "Material Design" whiteness of it. I can hear it sucking down the battery as I use the phone. This seems to be accurate as the battery life on my girlfriends phone on 5.0 BOK3 is much worse than my 4.4.4 NK2 S5. I really want to switch her phone to Dark Holo (I believe that is the name of the kitkat theme) but I cannot figure out how. I have already switched her to Textra for SMS with a dark theme and set her lock screen and home background to black but when she pops the samsung keyboard the white is almost blinding. Does anyone have any advice? Her phone is rooted and xposed is installed. Thanks in advance.

Other than custom roms with a theme on them no, there's nothing that I know of, if you find something let me know cause I'm interested in this as well. So far I took a theme from another s5 ROM and 'ported it' to mine, kind of an involved process.

Amoled screens use no power to display black, so the advantage is that a systemwide dark theme improves battery life.
