[Q] What are the 4 gold connectors on the left bottom for?

So I was noticing that there are 4 gold connectors (antennas?) on the left bottom left hand side of the Nexus 7 when it's in portrait mode. From iFixit.com it looks like they are connected to the motherboard. Are these some sort antennas or possibly an external USB/Serial port access?
My guess: GPS antennas because this thing has the fast GPS lock I have ever saw. It's the only thing I've ever got a lock with in our office.

Future dock accessory to be announced similar to Gnex. Has nothing to do with GPS.

Since there is 4 pogo pin contacts vs the Galaxy Nexus' 3, I'm hoping it's USB (VCC, D+, D-, GND). Hopefully the docks will do more then charge (USB ).

I'm actually hoping they bake video out into it somehow but I'm not holding my breath. :good:

I agree that would be cool, but it wouldn't make sense to suddenly use a proprietary video output.

I'm hoping that when it's docked with those connectors it goes into tablet mode with the home screen rotated. It's annoying not having the home screen rotated when it's sitting that way, just like my EVO.

It would be cool to use it to hook to my tv and play netflix for example rather than burning up my 5th freakin Xbox.

Controller mod?

BUT
I IS possible to make a mod that adds a controller to the Nexus 7. The question is, is it possible for us to make one? Or do we have to wait for a company to make one?
I've looked into making one but the problem all the controller boards are one single board, none of them are split in the middle. If anyone has any ideas post them here.

Theoretically of course it's possible to make one, its a big challenge but we already know we can OTG connect an Xbox/ps3 controller.
I'd prefer to wait and see if a proper controller mod becomes available though.

I think it is already been done by NYKO see the PLAYGROUND APP IN GPLAY it's for the two new controllers at game stop the NYKO PLAY PAD PRO AND THE PLAY PAD the app does pretty much what your wanting and alot more controllers are $40.00 and the app is free GOD BLESS YOU GUYS almost forgot to say that these controllers are specially designed to work with NVIDIA TEGRA also has HID support for touch mapping and mouse and keyboard emulation you can also sync and select button profiles for all your games I hope that this helps you guys

I think the OP means a controller that fits around the outside of the nexus 7, to make one single unit.

When I first saw the WikiPad I definitely wanted the cradle style that engages the screen with the user. I'm guessing we will have to wait.
I did make one on the cheap (less than $8 out of pocket due to a gift card and some parts at home). It gives 4 buttons on the right and 4-way directional control which can be used in conjunction to the touch screen buttons- nothing compared to a SixAxis, but I haven't seen any cradle type joysticks like the WikiPad. I use it for emu's that I play most the time, key mapping is required, and is not natively recognized.
This first one I made as a quick mod with intentions of being budget minded. With your post, you have me thinking of making a BT SixAxis like dual analog with 2 trigger buttons however...
I'm thinking this cradle can be used to house the PCB behind the Nexus7 (inside the cradle case with a panel cover) since there is a decent amount of inner depth, while being able to solder and route wires to potentially add the analog sticks all behind the scenes... I predict a little bit of fiberglassing to accomodate the button and stick housings, but I don't see it being impossible. Maybe my next project in line.

That's an impressive cradle you made there. I've yet to look at the controller, I'll be taking it to work with me tomorrow so I'll post the feasibility to slicing it in two tomorrow.
Yeah I imagine it would have dpad and analogue stick.on left, buttons and analogue stick on right, that would be sweet.

I'm a little bit into classic gaming/Mame cabinets, a lot of people dissect the 360 or psx controllers to use the PCB for input and run long wires all the way to their buttons. I'm sure by the time I made one using good components with my luck one will be already manufactured for cheaper. Still would be a good challenge for a weekend project.

So I had a look at my 360 controller, you're right its one complete circuit board, no place to separate it anywhere.
I think it may be possible to remove analogue sticks and mount them, and run wires back to the board. And as you say, house the board and wires in the back or bottom of the housing.
I may have to find a cheaper controller to go butchering mind!

Wacom Bamboo Touch Graphics Tablet CTT-460 Question

Are these any good for replacing a Mouse/Touchpad in Windows 8 i.e get all the same multi touch features as using a touchscreen or are they just a glorified Touchpad?

They are not intended for use as a mouse at all. I don't think they support gestures at all, nor do they left/right click in a normal way.
They are for pressure sensitive drawing in supported software only. You can't use them effectively as a mouse replacement and I am not sure why anyone would want to seeming as they require a stylus (they aren't touch sensitive to your finger, only a wacom stylus)

Seems unlike most tablets it will recognise fingers and act as a mouse. But it is not intended for this usage. It is a drawing tablet for artists, not a mouse.

I was going by the description on this website http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Wacom-Bamboo-Touch-Graphics-Tablet-CTT-460/version.asp, as they make it out to be a Mouse/Touchpad replacement.

Z3 compact + Google cardboard

Anybody successfully got this device working with Google cardboard? Love to try it, but the replica cardboards seem to fit bigger devices. I like to know if it will fit the z3 compact.

z3 compact is way to small. best for use with devices 5-5.5 inches

Couldn't resist trying. It works. Sadly the magnetic switch is on the wrong side. Needs some work. Virtual reality on the z3 compact! Awesome combination of the high quality camera, Google camera photo sphere and vr cardboard. You can jump in the picture and look around. Really fun and decent image quality.
Ordered a plastic headset with straps on Amazon because the cardboard won't last long.

It's not bad with this phone, but it's much better with a 5" phone and a 1080p screen. Maybe if you modified cardboard to be smaller, but with the stock plans you get black bars on the side (and the Sony logo) and the pixels are much more noticeable.
I'd give it a shot if it's the only device you have, but if you can use something like a Nexus 5 (I borrowed my friend's) it's much better.
It's not quite an Oculus Rift, but it's still really cool.

It's a pity that the magnetic sensor is near the "bottom" of the phone. I've tried placing the phone rotated 90 degrees to the right (instead of left), but sadly, the Google Cardboard app only supports landscape rotation in one direction, towards the left.

You can use your fingers, Bluetooth controller or move the magnet to the other side. Not ideal, but it works.

But if the z3c is your only phone is there a way to make the magnatic switch work (not just hold it on the other side but a permanent option) and do you really see the sony logo and black bars?
In short is my question can I use my z3c for cardboard and that it works 100% without any compromises?
And if I need to adjust something what do I need to do? Or buy?

No, it's not a 5" phone but I've used a Z3 full fat with Cardboard too and the difference isn't much. I've also tried other devices and they have issues with the magnet too. Apparently the magnet provided just isn't strong enough. You can get around this by touching the screen (yes, that's awkward) to select menus with the Google demos, and in some cases, pairing your phone with a PS4 Dualshock 4 controller.
Don't let the fact that the Compact is smaller put you off trying it. It's a great way to try VR, with all the everyday benefits of still having a smaller phone in your pocket.

There are indeed ways to use Bluetooth controllers as an alternative for the magnet.

Which one did you buy? I've seen a lot of different variations of cardboard, some even for smaller phones like 4.5" - 5".

The plastic one, was a misbuy. Turned out to be 6"..
Did try a paper 4,5" cardboard on eBay wich fits fine.

I ordered a generic "cardboard" with no magnetic switch. It worked okay. I had to position the z3c half an inch further away from the lenses for the proper focus, and I had to hold it in place with my hand.
It only cost me $1.99, free shipping, so I just considered it a fun novelty.
Question. What kind of bluetooth controller would work for this?

It would be great if it could, but that's not quite what I meant. I meant that the DS4 pairs with the Z3C to be used with Google Cardboard. Several demos I've tried allowed me to move around in virtual space using the DS4 as a controller. I can't comment on actual screen touches with the trackpad, although that would be a very nice side effect if also true.

Just bought a cheap $2 Google Cardboard off eBay and am awaiting shipment, but I just wanted to point out that Dual Shock 3 controller can be paired with the Z3C as well and works great!

Just wanted to report that Cardboard works perfectly with the Z3C. I guess this is the first time I've run into an issue with the Z3C's low PPI as it's very noticeable when viewing through Cardboard, but that's a very specific use and I wouldn't use my daily phone as a VR handset anyway. Otherwise, everything else works as it should and was really cool!
I fixed the magnetic button issue by rotating the phone or taking the button out and putting it on the other side of Cardboard.

Works fine after a minor mod.

I have a pretty thick bumper-case for my Z3c (since I have a history of losing phones to stone-floors) and it works just fine. There is some noticeable pixelation but not to bad. As some other people have noted the magnet-button does not seem to work. I read this post a few days ago and I made a somewhat crude work-around using some aluminium foil. I've seen quite a few people recommend the glap, but I can only find it for ~99$ (USD) on amazon. The controller I use currently is Beboncool It was ~45$ and has full button remapping with icons on the screen via the application. It does fit the Note 10+ with a case, but only with a very thin case.

I got it for $89 on Amazon. I tried it with the Samsung leather case and it fit really well.

Any chance I can get a picture? I bought this controller, but returned it because I thought it wouldn't fit the Note 10+.

Personally, I bought the GLAP. I've had digifly wee 2, MOGA and another chinese bluetooth controller. The GLAP is pricey but fir emulation and Parsec/Steam link, I do not believe anything comes close to as comfortable and as high of quality as Glap.

I went with this holder because it opens up to be 3.55" compared to many others that only open to 3.5" the extra .05" is enough to fit my Note 10+ in its Otterbox Defender case.
As for going with the V2 of the Xbone One controller. Its basically required to get Bluetooth support so that you can use it wirelessly with android.
