Hi, I have been using the phone for the past 2 days and realised that it heats up pretty quickly. It was particularly hot at the top part of the back of the phone, the area where the NFC logo is located. I did several "tests" to see how fast it heats up, and I made sure that the phone was cooled down before each try.
Firstly, I used the phone for browsing the internet for about 15mins and realised that the temperature(battery) has risen to 43 degrees celsius. Next, I tried using its camera and took several shots and after about 5 minutes of use, the temperature has also risen to 44.2 degrees and the a message was prompted stating something like "the temperature is too high! camera needs to turn off." I then tested the video recording in 4K resolution. The recording lasted for only about 3mins 40secs before the message was prompted, and the recording was not saved. The temperature rose to 44.5 degree celsius.
I understand that the automatic shut off of the camera was to prevent any hardware damage from the high temperature. However 15 mins of browsing and less than 5 minutes of 4k recording does not appear satisfactory from a user's point of view, especially after the device being touted as the best Sony has built. I hope that a software update can help mitigate this issue, as it will be a huge hindrance to the day to day usage if the issue remains. Does anyone else have the same issue?
Just own it only 1 day and I have no heat problem. A bit hotter when using under direct sunlight with 3G in about 1-2 hours. Totally no heat problem . Mine always under 40°.

Could it be due to some background processes like media server? First time I booted the phone, I took only 2 pictures when the phone complained it's too hot, and indeed it felt very hot to the touch. Subsequently I don't have this issue anymore.

I going to **** myself in the ass if Z2 has the same heating & back panel unglue **** issues...
I tried running the "tests" in safe mode with the same results, which eliminates the probability of 3rd party apps affecting it. I have also tested a few display sets in my local sony centres, same issue. did anyone actually tried 4k recording?...or using manual mode for the camera over a period of 5-10 mins?....

What's the ambient temperature when you run the tests? Where do you live? Could you record a video to demonstrate what you're seeing? It's strange you're the only one to have mentioned it so far.

i do not have a spare phone/camera to record a video, but this is the closest i cant get to what im experiencing.

Well i got to tell you that all snapdragon 800 SOC heat up doesent matter the phone producer,i have an lg g2 and it heats up relativley quick its not a defect its a must because its a 2.3 ghz clock not a 1.0 so every time u do demanding tasks the proc will heat up you cant do anyting about it,you can try to change it maybe you got a faulty one but keep in mind if you get a new one it will heat up non the less depending on task.
And another thing when battery temp shows 40`C the CPU temp will be like 70`C+<<
Check this out! 38 degrees Celsius! Is that normal for the Z2? The m8 is only in the 28-30 dergees Celsius range.
And here are some m8 different user sceen shots...as you can see the temperature is pretty stable, between 28-31 degrees celsius, a bit lower than the Z2's 38 degrees. I wonder why this difference in temperature between the two?

Do you know the ambient temperatues of where the two phones are being used? Taiwan and Singapore where the Z2 is released are hot countries. The M8 has been released world wide.
If the M8 is from the UK where the temperature is less than 20C and the Z2 is in Singapore where it is ~35C, its going to be much easier for the Z2 to heat up.
I'm sure the Aluminium shell of the M8 also helps with heat.

Or maybe its because of the waterproofing on the z2 wich is sealed up and has no open gaps through heat can emanate and cool down.

Yes it could be, but that is speculation, although I'm sure the M8 doesn't have air circulation inside either.
I think some of the difference could be down to environmental factors.
Ambient temperature is the key thing here. Battery temp means nothing without an ambient temp. My one X, which is my second, they both get around 50 degrees when under load. It's normal. 40 degrees is absolutely fine, it slightly warmer than body temperature. Lol
No one cares about Battery temperature!
Battery temperature won't go over 45°C Anyway!
Check out the SoC temperature! that can reach up to 75°C
Does Xposed work for Z2 ? There is a cool module called "CPU( or SoC) Temperature in Status bar" It does exactly that! Got that on my Xperia Z and it shows me always how hot the phone really is.
Oh boy not the same crap from Z1, the overheating problem & camera shutting itself off because of that, was the main reason I skipped on Z1, Now it's the same with Z2? bummer
anyway this is what I read today from sony:
"We are aware of some users encountering issues when shooting 4K video for extended periods. Shooting movies in high quality 4K resolution can make significant demands on your phone's processor and battery life, as well as phone memory. Therefore for the best experience, we recommend you install a high capacity SD card (Xperia Z2 can take a card up to 128GB) and shoot 4K video in short bursts of no longer than a few minutes at a time." -Sony Mobile Singapore
Wow didn't notice this. There is indeed a High Temperature Warning after recording 4K for about 3 minutes and the camera shuts off. Thankfully, 4K isn't that popular yet and there are no issues recording at 1080p.I hope Sony finds a solution soon because that 4K feature is really advertised.

It may help improve the situation, I noticed marked improvement in the length of videos that I can record if I enabled Extended Usage as folllows:
Power Management -> Stamina Mode -> [Check] Extended Usage
Mention how long you can record without this setting and with it.
Also mention ambient temperature when you do the recording in both cases.

Over 2 minutes so far, no shutdowns yet...

I actually was recording my baby doing tricks, but initially was not able to do so... cause by the time I click on the red button to record, it already has over heated....

20 seconds at 29 degrees is rather short, i managed 2:30 in a non air conditioned shop before it put up that message, there was no active wifi or cell connection when doing this test as there was no sim card in it.
will try your setting later and report back how much difference it makes. Some body else also mentioned that this setting worked as well.
I think the camera overheating issue is not really related to the camera sensor, but to the processor overheating.

Yes it is very short. I was so annoyed that I flashed another firmware only to find out that it had the same problems. I was not even taking 4k videos! Basically when you factory reset the phone, whatever settings that is there was the one I used.
However, last week, when I got my phone I could remember taking videos that were relatively long (3 minutes or so)... Oh well now I have setup the phone again... I am now on that .438 singtel firmwware.

It's very hard to do any sort of proper testing and come to any conclusions.
I can usually take loads of photos and (1080p video) in close succession, but just last week, when it was quite sunny - I managed just a few before the error and being told the camera would close to cool down. Started the camera again, it shut down almost immediately. And after that, I got an error that stopped the camera loading at all.
Now that's not normal. It really wasn't THAT hot either, but the CPU was running at 60 degrees! Goodness knows why, but ultimately I was unable to take photos until I'd turned the phone off completely to let it cool (I was out, so didn't have any cold water to dip it in).
After leaving it a while, it was okay for as long as I needed to take some more pictures.
It's ****** annoying as we're about to have one of the hottest weeks of the year so far in the UK, and here it's quite humid and sticky. Thus, I fully expect that I'm going to have loads of problems. And Sony will give us the software fix they've now acknowledged is coming just in time for winter.

Anyone else having trouble with the S Health heart rate monitor?
I just can't get it to give me a reading no matter where I put my finger on the sensor.
it works fine using the SpO2 function and reports my pulse rate as somewhere in the low 30's
I'm wondering if the heart rate app rejects my pulse rate because it is too low?
I managed to get it to work when i first unboxed the phone as as I was exited it gave me a reading in the 50's but since then it just will not work
I doubt your heart rate is in the low 30s unless you are an elite athlete. Make sure you only press your finger lightly. And if you are using a case, try removing it.

My pulse is in the low 30's, I have a medical every two years and it has always been like that since I was in my twenties.
I can assure you that I have tried every possible technique I can think of for holding a finger over the sensor and none of them work when using heart rate monitor. As I said previously it works fine every time when using SpO2 so I'm confident that I am using it correctly.

My suggestion is to install a standalone 3rd party H/rate monitor from Google play. I have 2 other 3rd party H/rate monitors on my Note 4. It works 100% Same as Samsung. I did this as i like to compare my S HEALTH hart rate.. working 100%, to my 3rd party apps. in comparison to my Polar Bluetooth hart rate, i use for my running That way if i wantto quickly use app i know which one is reliable. I have compared my S HEALTH to Polar and found to be acceptable. Good luck
same issue here. My heart rate is ~50 now and it fails to detect in in 9 cases out of 10. The times when I was successful I pressed the button to measure it again without moving my hand or my finger from the sensor and it failed no idea what's wrong.

Just made an obvious discovery. All this time I was measuring it while I was comfortably sitting. I've realised that there was not enough blood flow in my fingers. As soon as I started to measure the heart rate while standing it was working all the time. Hope this is the same problem in your case
I'm having the same issue, except both the SPO2 and the heart rate sensor wont work. When I stand up and take the test, it also fails.
same issue here. both HRM app and SPO2 doesn't work properly as well (standing up or sitting down). it keeps on giving me extreme BPMs like 90+ or 100 while resting.
Yep heart rate sensor not working for me at all. Have had no reading in over 50+ tries. Sp02 works.

My model only has heart rate and stress but they work every time.
Heart rate is incredibly accurate - I've compared it to hospital equipment as well as my Garmin chest strap - it's always spot on, regardless of sitting, standing, exercising, etc.

Don't push your finger on the sensor. Just press very very lightly. It works perfectly for me. My heart rate is usually 70-90 resting and thats what my other heart rate monitor also shows. I am not sure what SPO2 actually measures, but I usually get 99%-100%.
I've noticed that the heart rate monitor won't work when my heart rate drops below 50 bpm. When I'm relaxed my garmin reads 46 to 48 and the note 4 won't register a reading. If I get up and run around for a bit it works fine. With a bit of experimenting 50bpm seems to be the cut off. limitation of the sensor maybe?

Pretty lame, it kept failing since I was lying down so I stood up and tried again, still no luck. Had to do a few jumping Jacks and it finally worked 51 bpm. Do the 3rd party apps work lower than 50 bpm?
It doesn't work under 50bpm for me too. I was thinking my sensor was bad but this thread but this thread reassures me.
The SpO2 sensor seems to be more sensible and moreover it also gives the heart rate. With it I can measure up to 42rpm.

I got it working!
I couldn't for the life of me get the heartrate monitor to work. For 2 days it told me hold still keep finger on blah blah blah. I kept trying to keep my finger 'centered' like it said but as soon as I moved my finger to the left side bam! Works like a charm every time now. Very lightly towards the left (if screen facing you). Try that.
I have the same problem. and exactly what you guys are saying. if it is under 50 then it doesn't work.
This is so stupid from Samsung because I'm afraid to show it off to Apple fan boys lol. Also the finger scanner is not reliable as my iPhone 5s

Measures O2(oxygen saturation) level in blood. Best to test it after waking up as it can show if you have sleep apnea.

this is exactly the issue. It's not designed to give readings less than 50 bpm as it views those readings as an error. Where as while using the SPO2 sensor it will give any heart rate recorded as long as the SPO2 gets a "proper" reading. Basically if you're in excellent physical condition or have a very low resting heart this version of the heart rate monitor might not be for you. Unfortunate though as I like the function of S Health
My story with HRM
It is old thread, but I become owner of Note 4 just few weeks ago. And my situation was that everyone in the house get measured heart rate, only me not?! This is why I found this thread and tried squats, standing, sitting, laying, but couldn't achieve to turn red light on. My family just put e finger, in a second equipment starts measuring?! Even my colleagues in office get measured, me.. no!
Finally, I found a way, and wanted to share this experience in case of someone else gives up from this sensor because of similar problems.
Just try other fingers!!!
For me it worked with ring finger and pinky only. No other finger activates HRM for me (I didn't try foot ) !

Sooo, something is very off with Google Fit/MyFitnessPal. In the latter, it's showing calories burned from steps as being REALLY high. Like today, I'm only at approximately 450 steps, and it says I've burned 122 calories from that. Yesterday, I had around 12,000 steps, and it said I was close to having burned 1000 calories. This is WAY off. I should be burning a little under 300 calories per 6000 steps or so by my weight. Anyone else experiencing this? I have a Fossil Q Explorist HR.
Also, to add, I had a Huawei Watch 2 last year (sent it back, terrible battery life), and for the week I had it, steps and calorie count were pretty spot on.
Lastly, my weight lifting/strength training/HIIT workouts are not showing in MFP. My treadmill warmups are, even my treadmill cool-down this Saturday after doing HIIT did. But nothing else does. I see them in the Fit app though.
I'm wondering if this is stemming from problems associated with the new Fit update?

It's a very nice handset. The only things I have against this phone is the stupid power and fingerprint separate buttons.
I know why this has been done but it still sucks.
I've upgraded from a Z5 Compact so i was surprised that it felt about the same weight in your hand. The width is about the same too so holding in your hend is comfortable.
It's going to stick out of the pocket though and I can't get the 'free' headphones until the promotion week.
The only thing I need to work out is the side sense thing as I haven't had a replacement handset for almost 5 years.. Migrating my setup from one handset to the other was ok but as a different android version the links where there but no apps.
Oh and the cameras are pretty cool. The whole 3d scanning thing is great as per previous handsets with this feature which I wasn't expecting on this handset and the Dolby atmos I've been using on my PC which does improve the listening experience when wearing headphones. The vibrating sound thing to me sounds like a battery waster. It's only day one for me but I'll keep this post updated as I go.
Day three and the battery life thing has been an issue. Just be sure you don't mind only getting a day (Litterelly 24 hours with a full charge) as with standard use and I haven't been playing games only using the camera so be prepared. You have to remember to kill off all apps before bed time as I discovered the battery went from %50 to ~%20 over night when I didn't do this. There are definetly some battery tweaks that need to be done here to extend the life. The smart charge thing is an assumption that you'll always be able to charge the phone.
That is a big screen and is using most of the battery. You're only option here is to reduce the brightness. The adaptive brightness seems to always return to 50% even though I've set it lower in the evening. If you could calibrate this to not go above a brightness during times then this would save some battery.
The screen is the best feature of viwing media on the phone IMO. You can finally see the whole picture and not waste screen space. The three cameras are awesome and the Pro video app is a great touch to these.
Oh one last thing.. There is no USB to USBc connector (PC to phone) You get a Female to Female USB Charging cable. If you're coming from Micro usb then this is unexpected.
Ok So It's the new year Jan (Half way through) and I have only just nudged over half my phones storage and that includes my family christmas vids which I haven't yet parked off onto the NAS. I really don't feel the need for expanding the storage of this phone and probably won't unless I start recording in 4K all the time. The pro video recorder doesn't get used as often as I'd like as you have to calibrate it before use for the lighting conditions so for quick vids the camera button is linked to the main camera app still. I got a usbc to hdmi box (ZasLuke) so I can plug this into the TV directly as the video quality is great. The problem (at the moment) is that you have the aspect ratio issue which you can use zoom for but until this new aspect ratio is used for TVs it seems a little weird.
I got the Android 10 update and as I'm no longer in the ROM dev game I don't have much interest in updates unless they can make my battery last longer. The battery will last over a day or two at a push but I rarly let the charge go below 15% I only reboot the phone when I'm trying to stream and I get really bad buffering issues on Amazon.
The "free" headphones get used every day for about an hour to an hour and a half and go back in their charging pod when not in use which has also had a couple of firmware updates to provide Alexa support now the range is surprisingly good too. When I come to use them again they are fully charged again. I don't charge the headphones for about a week which is great.
Oh and it has officially been dropped by accident on the corner but the protective case did exactly what I wanted it to and saved me from a fate worse than calling the insurance. Still shiny and unblemished.
