Transfer call blocklist - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Hello everyone,
I've used Samsung's Smart Switch several times, to transfer my data from one phone to another. But Smart Switch always fails to transfer my call blocklist, so I have to type the list by hand all over again.
Is there a better way to do this? Via an android app, or even via adb commands? Without root of course.
Thank you.

i edited my quote to show just the part that makes me believe that you dont have these phone numbers saved as contacts on your phone. If that is the case, then android doesnt know to transfer the fact that you blocked those numbers not associated with an entry into your contact list over to a different device. Im betting that if you add a single contact on your old phone and then tack all the blocked numbers on to that number, then itll work. You might have to add a few new contact entries as im unsure about how many phone numbers you can add to each contact, but im sure you get the idea.
also, if youre blocking phone numbers of people who youd rather not see their name on your phone, you can make a contact called whatever you like such as "mortuary" or "FBI 'nobody wants' list" and add whatever numbers you need on to that contact

First of all, thanks for taking the time to answer to my question.
Indeed you are right, I am not talking about the Contacts. This is the blocklist in the Phone app. (in older devices it was called Auto reject list, now its called Block list).
Adding phone numbers in the block list does not require a Contact to exist. Adding numbers in the block list is easy, during an incoming call the "block" button adds the incoming call to the list and rejects the call at the same time.
Unfortunately, Smart Switch does not transfer this list, hence my post.
I will try what you suggest and create contact that contains blocked numbers, though I'm not sure how to transfer them from the Phone app to the Contacts app. Lets see...

once you have the contact stored, youd just export the vcf file to wherever it needs to go. also, i know the blocked call feature is pretty nice, i rarely use it, but im betting samsung overlooked the passing of blocked caller info with smartswitch. One would have to imagine that the blocked numbers list gets stored somewhere on the phone. Hopefully its not in a root protected folder. Best of luck!

Interesting... the vcf export file is missing some information from my Contacts, like the associated image (the one in the vcf is a small thumbnail only). Seems like this method is even worse than Smart Switch.

i cant say that im at all familiar with the contents of the VCF file itself. I would have thought that the VCF file was pretty basic as its been the standard for a decade

Well, version 4 of the standard (RFC 6350) clearly states the use of a URI which may be a remote URL or a base64 encoded string, but does not impose any resolution limits.
For whatever reason, Samsung hides the Contacts high-res photos within a root-accessible directory and the exported VCF file contains a small thumbnail as a base64 encoded string. Of course there is a big loss of other data as well. For example historical logs of all the Contacts. I'm guessing VCF export is not a real solution for moving to a new phone, but a solution for sharing contacts.
Maybe "adb backup" is more effective? hmmm... food for thought

I didn't migrate for me as well.
I have tried adding the blocked number to my contacts, but it it not migrated to the blocked list on my new phone. Have you managed to migrate it?
JP

Unfortunately, even the latest Smart Switch, does not support migration of the block list
So far, I haven't found a way to backup the list, it has to be done manually.

Thanks. I had 470+ numbers, and it would not have been easy to type each one out. I exported and imported. Took 5 minutes in total with every task done. Thanks again.

It doesn't work anymore as it says it's for old android version and doesn't let us download it.
Is there an alternative?

Clipboard driving me nuts

I have recently bought an XDAII and am very happy overall. One thing driving me crazy is when I have a missed call and view the number in the call log there is no way of adding the number to an existing contact.
You can add to a new contact but not new contact - even just being able to copy the number to the clipboard would be good...
At the moment I have to write the number down from the log and then go into contacts and enter the number manually. MANUALLY! this isnt supposed to be what technology is about! :?
Can anyone help.. please?!
If the number is not in your contacts, adding as a new contact is easy. If the number is say, a new / alternate phone number for an already exisiting contact, the only was is to create a new contact then copy the number, go to your existing contact and paste it. Then go back and delete the new. temporary contact. It is a bit of a pain but I can't think of any other way at the moment !
Ravi
Thanks for the reply. That is the way I am doing it at the moment but seems very long-winded! Have been looking for perhaps a third party app which makes clipboard functions available from apps which dont have it as standard (such as call log).. no luck so far.

contacts management problems

hello, i'm confused as how to update a contact's phone number. i'd mainly like to update in both contacts and sim card. for example, John Smith changed his phone number and kept his email the same. i wish to update in the sim as well as automatically update in the contacts without manually going in and updating the contacts. so in the end i have to edit both sim entry and contact entry.
secondly i'm having problems with contacts switching from windows mobile2003. John Smith shows up in my contacts list as Smith,John so i can't search for him in the contacts list. i have to manually search for him in order to update his new phone number. any suggestions?
thirdly i can't create a new contact after i've added a new sim entry through contacts. it seems i have to load the Sim Manager application and wait while it loads sim entries in order to "Copy to Contacts"
any help would be greatly appreciated so i can streamline my work.
running: wizard (8125) with OEM rom

It's not possible to simultaneously update the contact's phone number in memory and in a SIM card, as far as I know. Shubaroo (see below) has a SIM manager that might make it a little easier on you.
Most people either use memory only (because they only have one phone and don't really care, like myself), or they use SIM only (because they change phones based on activity, like some people change shoes).

Wizards run Windows Mobile 5, not Windows Mobile 2003, so I don't know what else to say about that. Not sure what you're even asking, honestly.
As far as last, first vs. first last, I recommend "ContactFix" from www.shubaroo.com which is designed exactly to fix this.

Yep. See my comments above. One, or the other. That's your choice, but you don't get both, AFAIK.
One last bit of advice: Ask ONE question at a time, and you're far more likely to get a response. It took me nearly half an hour to sift through this mess to form cogent answers. Most people won't bother.

One more thing about this junk...

Did you notice that it's not possible to add a missed call/received call/outgoing call number to an existing contact in the address book using the dialer app?
You can't even copy and then paste the number manually into the address book. So, you have to memorize the number, or write in in a paper, and then editing the contact.
What a piece of crap.

Sorry but what are you talking about?
Do you have the correct firmware actually?
I mean you can perfectly add any number to contacts,
I do it all the time. The dialer is perfect BTW.
And actually all the new numbers from dialer can be simply written in Notes and copied from that.
I honestly don't know what is the problem with your device
but it's certainly not true.

BTW, You can't copy/paste numbers from the dialer app into any other application.
And I've have MR2 firmware.
And in the Xperia X1, you can add a new number from the dialer to an existing contact (a contact that's ALREADY on the address book, not a new one).

Jolo I'm sorry but something is wrong with you or your phone.
I can add any new number from Dialer to Contacts.
I don't see a reason of adding existing contact....
And you can YES copy the number from the dialer to notes.

You receive a call from an unknown number.
You answer it, and you notice that it's Mr. John Smith, one of your clients. You already have the Mr. Smith contact on your address book. But, this number is new because he has a new cellphone or a new cell line.
So, you might want to add this new number to the ALREADY existing Mr. Smith contact.
BUT YOU CAN'T.
It's that difficult to understand?
In other phones, even my old Z750, or the X1, or of course the iPhone, you can do it.
If you can do this, can you please tell me how to do it?
And not, i've tried again and YOU CAN'T COPY A NUMBER FROM THE DIALER.
Jolo.
Yes this is a crappy bug. My phone behaves the same as Jolo complained.
However there is a workaround.
Can you imagine a bug that also has a bug? Well this one has. In Phone app, go to menu>options>advanced and tick add new phone number to Contacts at the end of the call. When this box is checked, at the end of the call you will be prompted to add the number and yes it allows you to select an existing contact to add the number to.

menu/tool/options/advance = tick to ADD NEW PHNOME NUMBER TO CTC AT THE END OF CALL.
after your phone call - x2 ask do you wanto to add, it will come up default wm6.5 contact and you can easilyyyyyy add it ...
happy trying

It works here fine.
Ok so the fact is you can copy numbers from Dialer to Notes
but only in the space you actually write number, not from the history.
And I usually add numbers from this prompt so I didn't see that adding from the history makes a new contact.
It's interesting if it's a general WM 6.5.3 thing though.

[Q] Incoming Call on WM7

Can someone clarify if WM7 will show both the full name and company for incoming calls.
I save all my contacts in outlook and use the File As to show both Person & Company i.e. John Smith(ABC Ltd).
I have over 1500 contacts for work and it's one of the features that has kept me with Windows for years.
I've tried Android and that doesn't do it. Iphone doesn't do it. Nokia doesn't do it - Not sure about Blackberry.
Also does WM7 have smart dial - I'm sure I read that it didn't, again it's a feature that's kept me with Windows, I have a shocking memory and being able to dial by first name, last name, company or telephone number is invaluble.
Cheers
Pete
For me it shows only 1st and last name + picture if available. Company info is a no go as long as you don't incorporate it in the contact name itself as I usually do.
Smartdial: No. But searching the contact list is easy. Just type 2-3 letters and you have narrowed the results enough. I'm saying this with 700+ contacts.
...I very much like to use voice dial, too. Very reliable, in fact, and fast.

That's really dissapointing - as a business tool I find it so very useful.
I guess I'll have to stick with 6.5 until something else similar comes along.

Dear All,
I'm experiencing very strange issue with my WP7 HTC HD2, when receiving call form my saved contacts.
Almost all my contacts are saved in my phone with international dialing code as I'm living abroad.
When I receive call abroad, the name of my contact is displayed.
When I receive call at home the name is not displayed, only the number is displayed and I dont know who is calling while the number is saved in my phone with international dialing code.
To have the name displayed I have to save the number again without international dialing code.
I have the same issue when I dialing also.
Please help.

[Q] Wildcard Contacts Grouping

I'm trying to group together phone numbers whose first 6 numbers are identical into one contact to have them go straight to the voicemail.
For example xxx-xxx-1000 xxx-xxx-1001 xxx-xxx-1002
Is there a wildcard I can use instead of putting them in one by one?
I tried xxx-xxx-1*** but it doesn't seem to work. Is there any way I can do this without resorting to an app?

I'm interested in the same thing if anyone comes across a solution. My issue is more for contact management and SMS conversation grouping than it is for white/blacklisting. I get SMS notifications from a few different services which show up as a sequentially suffixed number for the sender. This results in dozens or hundreds of SMS conversations, making it difficult manage/delete SMS messages. For example, facebook notifications that get sent via SMS show up as 930010XX, where XX is incremented with each new message receieved. Rather than having a single SMS conversation with potentially hundreds of messages I have hundreds of SMS conversations, each with 1 message (or more than 1 if the SMS was delivered in multiple parts).
Any thoughts?
Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I still think this would be a useful feature of contacts or people. I would love to put all of my work phone numbers (about 500) in there so I can block them when i am off for the day
Well at least for blocking specific numbers there's an option for using wildcards;
Go to Settings > Call > Call Rejection > Auto Reject List > Create and type in the part of the number that is always the same and then choose "Begins with..." below.
But I don't think there's a possibility for creating contacts with wildcards; even though it'd make sense so you can see who's call is going in and if you call that number you just would have to type the last numbers, depending on which one do you want to call.
