I have had the nexus player for past 4 years. I use it not so frequently, but it stays upto date.
Recently I wanted to cast videos from my laptop-chrome browser to Nexus Player(like chromecast), and found that the google chrome doesn't identify the Nexus Player in the network. I can see from my router, that laptop and Nexus Player are in same network. I can connect my remote app from android/iphone to the player. But I am not able to cast from any device.
Is this something Google has intentionally done? Any ideas on how I can work around this?
Cheers!!
you should see if the antivirus blocks your chrome, since the antivirus protects the local network
Surprised yours is still working. I suspect Google is intentionally nuking Nexus Players. Many people complaining as of August of boot loops and bricked players.

not having issues with any other app (hulu, netflix, etc) works just fine... youtube buffers every 15-20 seconds... Connected via ethernet (microusb to usb ethernet adapter)..
Anyone else having this issue?
I'm having the same issue. But on Wifi.
Doesn't happen all the time. I know I have more than more bandwidth available .
I have this exact issue and it is driving me nuts. Youtube plays fine over my separate Chromecast that is connected to the same TV. All other apps do not buffer. I am connected via WIFI.
I find this happens eventually with mine as well. A reboot fixes it...and it eventually comes back. Same with Vevo and a few other video apps.
I'm also seeing something like this, but with mine, the app doesn't seem like it's buffering. I don't get the spinning circle. The videos stop and start.

Are you using LeanbackYoutube or sideloaded regular YouTube?

Leanback.
My workaround is to just use the chromecast support to watch YouTube videos.
I've also switched to the unleashed kernel to see if that solves the problem

Lean Back being used here as well. A reboot seems to clear it up for a while, but it comes back.
I have the same issue on wifi. It happens with the following apps, haystack tv, pluto tv, youtube and vevo. Netflix and plex work fine. I know its not a bandwidth issue. I'm using AC router and the youtube app on my tv works fine. I hope this is fixed as it is very frustrating.

Have you tried Sideload in the traditional YouTube app and using it instead?

I have not, but after posting, I tested casting via the respective apps and they work fine. Not buffering whatsoever.

Yeah, chromecasting works fine, but sometimes I don't want to cast, but want to just use the remote / built in interface.
Also, when I have guests over they just want to use the remote, but are plagued with constant buffering / pausing.
I'm having the same buffering/freezing problems. I've looked to see if there's a quality setting that can be changed to easily remedy the 1080 problems but can't find it, if there even is a setting for this.

Same problem here. It's super annoying. To the point that I'd just as soon watch it on my phone. My connection is only 3mbps. I don't want to watch things in high Def!
Same problem here. The lack of Google support on the nexus player is ridiculous. I mean come on, they own YouTube and it doesn't even work on a device they created. Its a joke.
Same issue too. Tried with both the Youtube (leanback) app and with casting.
Video starts to buffer at some point and I can't do anything to prevent that.
Has anyone got this figured out? Bandwidth isn't my constraint. I'm half tempted to contact Google and tell them I'm sending back their hockey puck and they can shove it up their ass.
Very frustrating .
Is there no website or link that people can report bugs on the player? I mean how long has it been out already and they are yet to resolve so many issues and also the lack of new apps is pretty surprising. I have a hard time to believe that there has only been 20 people/companies to release a app for the player.
And if there all those TV manufactures going to support NP, wouldn't you think they(Google) would be hauling a$# to get the OS stable and up and running?

Updated YouTube app yesterday... Still buffering.
This is insane. I love Android TV. I truly believe that the idea of it is perfect. Chromecast, games, control with a standard remote or smartphone. The execution is seriously lacking though. Why does it seem like Google cares so little about it's TV platforms? Getting Youtube to work as well on Android TV as it does on my phone or tablet does not seem like a significant task. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe there is an underlying hardware issue with these devices (I know there are a lot of complaints on the Plex forums about HD videos freezing), but some communication would be nice. I have reached out to Google support and they were very responsive, but the overall response was "we are looking into it" and that was months ago. Not very encouraging . . .
I just unboxed this today. So far every app I have tried to cast from doesn't work. Flixster has an error, 2 different encore apps don't work and VUDU doesn't even see it. I had zero problems on my chromecast. I upgraded to this for the AC band and for my son to play games on it. Now I can't even watch my ultraviolet movies. Is this just me or am I doing something wrong?
VUDU doesn't ever see nexus player for me either. And it stops showing up for other apps frequently. I hope a software update fixes it. Way worse for casting then Chromecast right now.
I just purchased a nexus player a few days ago and I'm already thinking about returning it. I was using it as a Chromecast last night to stream HBO go and ran into several errors where it would just stop playing. In fact, I had to plug in my Chromecast to finish the movie. I've done some research, and it seems like I'm not even close to the only person with playback issues. I also never had issues with HBO playback on my Roku 3. It seems odd that it has all of these issue's, especially since it has way more processing power than the roku or Chromecast. Anyone else have hese issues? My nexus player is connected via WiFi and I have 30mb down internet.
I don't use the casting feature very often but do you have the latest version of Android installed on your Nexus Player? I think there have been some improvements made to the casting performance through updates from Google.
I just received my nexus player tonight and am trying everything out. I've never owned a chrome cast so I've never used that feature before but tried it out with Netflix, plex, and Pandora and it worked great.
However, I went to go try HBO go and there is no cast button available. Nothing before I hit play and nothing while he video is playing.
I did s Google search and traded a suggestion of clearing out data, uninstalling, reboot device, and reinstall HBO go. Still nothing.
Like I said, all the other apps I tried casting on work except HBO go. Any suggestions?

Just tried casting from my iPad HBO go app and it shows up and works fine.
I should also note my phone is an LG G3 running android 5.0.1

Reboot the Nexus Player.
HBO Go casting works fine on my Nexus Player. I'm running firmware 5.1.1 on it. My phone is a Note 4 with 5.0.1
I don't know about HBO Go, but HBO Now seems to refuse to recognize the Nexus Player as a castable device. I've rebooted my NP, I've played around with it's wifi connectivity, etc., but it only recognizes actual Chromecasts as castable devices. Kind of annoying, and even more so that Now became Android TV ready, but only for Sony branded Android TVs, and not for the NP.

Same with me except it's the HBO Now app not casting. Sees my Chromecasts fine, but not the Nexus Player. There are other apps that show the NP, but not consistently. It seems the only ones that work are Google Apps (Play Movies, YouTube), but obviously you don't even need to cast those since they're native on the NP. I'm so close to getting my NP to be my one and only media device, but really need Casting to work correctly to get that to happen.
I can't cast from Ipad, android phone or google chrome anymore. Device is not showing up as a casting device anymore. :crying:
Anyone else with this issue?
The same for me. The Chromecast is still working, but the NP is not. I've also did a factory reset but the result is the same! The Nexus Player is not found in the device list in any of my devices.
I can only repeat what was said before me. Cast shows 'no devices available'. Also tried a factory reset since that is mentioned for earlier versions of android. But that did not work for me also.
Both of mine updated to 6.0. I was able to cast yesterday evening.. There was an update to the cast app about 2 or 3 days ago. Is your app up to date?
Only the Google Play Music sees the Nexus Player, but an atemp to connect to it fails. I've tried reinstalling the Google Cast Receiver, but there is no change.
The same for me. The Chromecast is still working, but the NP is not. I've did a factory reset but it did not help. Only the Google Play Music sees the Nexus Player, but the connection fails.
Same problem for me
The latest google cast receiver app update broke casting for me on 6.0 and 5.1.1... the only app i had which found the nexus player was hulu. YouTube, netflix, bein sports were not finding the nexus player. Try uninstalling the update
Anyone have casting working since the 6.0 update? If so, what version of the Google Cast Receiver do you have?
No casting for me since yesterday. I'll check to see if I am on 6 later.
Casting from ios without a problem. make sure you guys have the updated casting app in the playstore.

Yea, same here, GP Music is the only app that sees the NP. Can't actually get a cast attempt to work though. But not even YouTube is able to see it. Netflix can't either. GP Music just got a recent update. Maybe that helped it to at least see the NP?
When I try and cast things using YouTube and such, nothing running 6.0 is seen.
Time for 6.0.1.
This is shameful for Google. You can't miss a bug like this, unless you totally failed to test.
And I have the latest Chromecast app, always have since it was released.

Casting worked for me for a week after updating to 6.0.
My devices no longer see the Nexus Player as a cast device after installing the most recent Oct 13 update of the Google Cast Receiver app, version 1.16.43955.
I've tried clearing the app data and uninstalling the update (reverting to 1.15) and there's been no change.
The same goes for me, when can we expect Google to solve this, within a reasonable time?
I have got the same issue here on my sony android tv. I was able to cast few days ago, but not now.
Please report back to this thread if someone finds a solution.
In the same boat. Purchased the NP yesterday and was able to cast last night while it was on 5.1.1. This morning I find that the NP updated to 6.0 and now it does not show up as a casting option. Didn't have much time to troubleshoot this morning, but did a factory reset and that had no effect.
Probably not related to marshmallow, my android tv is still in 5.1.1
Same problem. I will attempt to flash 5.1.1 back tonight to see if all is good. Isn't Google testing it's OS? This is some major issue they introduced with 6.0 on the Nexus Player (and possibly all of the Google TV devices running 6.0).

Interesting. When did yours stop working?
ETA: Your case is the only one that I have seen that had the trouble at 5.1.1. Everyone else (including me) had the issue in conjunction with the update to 6.0
No Casting for me after upgrade
No Casting after upgrading to 6.0.. Tried Factory reset, Uninstalling updates to Google Cast Receiver, Clearing Cache & Data
