Idea for temporary glass fix - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

I have an S8 that I got from my girlfriend after she upgraded. It's got some pretty gnarly glass damage; chunks missing from 3 out of 4 corners in the front, 2 in the back, and associated cracks. Miraculously, the digitizer, camera lenses, etc. are undamaged. My plan was to use a whitestone dome glass kit on it hoping the adhesive would fill in the cracks/gaps and at least keep it from getting worse. I'm concerned that the loca that it comes with would be too soft and might peel off taking glass with it. I'm thinking about using a harder loca like a tp-1000n instead. Has anyone tried anything similar before?

Do an update if you do so. My sister has my old S8 and she's just cracked the down right corner.
If you got lucky with 'fixing' the problem, maybe I can too.

It turns out that my gf used a dome glass on her new phone (note 9). So I dug out a broken glass screen from my junk parts stash and used the left over adhesive on it to see how it would flow into the cracks.
After curing it looks pretty decent, the smaller hairline cracks are fainter. It filled in a small gap nicely. But like I thought the stuff that comes in the whitestone kit is too thin/soft to fill in larger gaps like on the corners of my s8. So I'm going to order a couple of different locas and experiment. Good thing I bought her a nice uv nail lamp a while back lol.

I got the dome glass installed, and so far so good. It filled in the cracks nicely. The corners will need some patching though. https://m.imgur.com/gallery/qk5gzzq

scratched screen!

so much for gorilla glass!
probably something my 8yo daughter did.
it's small -- only a couple of mm, but it's there.
hell, i watched that youtube of the guy dragging a nail across his TF.
this wasn't supposed to happen, right?
anybody else got scratches?
Nothing is impossible. I have no clue how I personally haven't scratched mine. Bezel is filled with nicks but glass is fine. I wonder if you could use a small glass repair kit or something to fill it
Edit:
Something like this?

i've just put a cheapo screen protector on it that came with a case i bought. i hadn't bothered before, thinking that the glass was unscratchable. will source a higher quality one later.
let this be a cautionary tale to others -- especially if your kids are using yours.

It's probably from a grain of sand. Since that's one of the materials used to make glass...it will definitely scratch it.
I'd like to see some one take sand paper to the screen instead of keys and knives...that would be hilarious!
So basically...double check that the cloth you are using is free of Debris and I guess maybe blow some air on the screen first to get rid of any grainy particles?
Not as rugged as a Pantech Element, but mine has nicks on the bezel also. I put a nice screen protector on mine knowing that Im more capable than a kid of scratching it! You should upload pics of it so we can all get quezzy!

Must uh been the diamond ring.
:/ hmm why so emo?
besides if it was really strong enough for a real gorilla to use i doubt it would be sold at this price anyway. even bullet proof glass scratches >_>

Love your avatar...why is his head so big? You gonna make biscuits?
Mine has scratches too, a lot small scratches on the bezel and a big one in the center. The big one is probably when the tablet was laying screen bottom on table with a lot of sugar and bread crumbs (I know, they shouldn't scratch gorilla glass). I just bought a matte protector and my screen doesn't look like a mirror anymore, scratches are almost invisible after that. It's also quite ugly, but more usefull than the shiny glass.

the matte protector i have now fitted has made my scratch completely invisible, at the expense of the screen being not so vivid; masks fingerprints too. i am going to leave it on for the present.

Mine is a local brand, but probably it's some rebranded cheap protector from China. Still, it looks almost exactly like matte LCD screen. It doesn't have glue - from what I read you should avoid the ones that use glue.

i posted my matt scfreen protector awhile ago with a pic of two transformers: one with and one without.

quick update:
i removed my matt screen protector and replaced it with a clear (glossy) one. the new one, while it shows more fingerprints and reflections than the matt one, is preferable to me as the display is so much brighter and more vibrant. the matt one seemed 50% dimmer. the clear one was also easier to fit without bubbling (although it still took me 3 tries!). the brand i used was ebay # 370581513587.
After not being able to find a new glass, I did some research and "fixed" my scratched screen.
Gorilla Glass is an aluminium silicate glass. There is a product by 3M called "Perfect-it III Trizact Machine Glaze" (or 3M product no. 06070 if you prefer) that contains an aluminum silicate clay polishing compound. Its expensive! I got it at NAPA, quart-size bottle costs about $65. Probably can be found online for cheaper. Its intended purpose is removing extremely fine swirl marks from high-gloss auto finishes.. something the high-end auto detailer would use on a Ferrari or something.
Fisrt i tried by hand, polishing the screen with a polishing cloth coated in the polishing compound. This worked just fine for some of the very fine scratches, but took more effort than i figured.
I eventually switched to a very soft, small polishing wheel from a Dremel polishing kit. About 1.5-2" diameter. Used a variable speed drill at a slow-to-moderate speed, I carefully buffed the screen over the scratched areas, moving in small circles over the scratches for 45 seconds to a minute with a heavy coating of the 3M compound.
In the end it worked out pretty good! Most of the scratches are totally gone, and the worst of them is barely visible now and could probably be eliminated like the rest if i repeated the process a couple more times.
I hope this info helps. Just be careful, if you don't have any experience doing this kind of thing you can easily make your screen much worse. I practiced on my old and now retired Droid Eris which also sports Gorilla Glass before I attempted to touch my precious TF101.

[Q] Scratches on screen, glass replacement?

Hey guys! Alright, so, a clumsy fashion student knocked my Nexus off the table while it was charging in class, but I was quick enough to somewhat save it by stopping the initial impact of the cement floor by lightly "kicking" my phone with my shoe, so instead of smashing to the ground it instead slid across the floor face down (but not too violently). There's no serious damage at all, the sides, corners, and back are all scratch-free, but there are a few scratches on the front screen that I can notice (might be a bit OCD, who knows).
So I looked around for replacement glass and found these. Now, would this be want I would want to get if I wanted to replace the front to get rid of the scratches? Also, if anyone could recommend a good and not too expensive brand for screen protectors, that'd be wonderful as well.
Thank you, guys!
You probably want to go to ebay instead and get the digitizer replacement so it come with both the glass and the digitizer, otherwise the one you linked won't have any touch ability.
Replacing the glass/digitizer is not an easy process, but you can check out this youtube video: the glass/digitizer is glued onto the LCD, so you need to heat it up, seperate it while not damaging the lcd, clean the glue, then replace the glass: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paRc_n4uB8s
You can try XtremeGuard which is a wet applied screen protector and its pretty cheap. If the scratch is small enough it will be hidden by it: http://www.amazon.com/GOOGLE-NEXUS-XtremeGUARD©-Screen-Protector/dp/B00AA281D6/
Skinomi is another brand. I like XtremeGuard more than Skinomi because I can trim it easily with a paper cutter while keeping the edge straight and its easier to install, but Skinomi material is better quality, thicker, and smoother feel.
You can also get tempered glass screen protector which is more expensive, but easier to install. I had an iloome version, but it cracked in half when I tried to peel it off to readjust it.
Right now I'm using XtremeGuard and this bumper: http://www.amazon.com/Google-Nexus-E960-Bumper-Case/dp/B00B199960/ These are cheapest alternatives, but I like it best so far.

OEM Samsung Screen Protector Replacement

Hi All,
There was some discussion when the S7A first came out about a kit that Samsung sells to replace the factory screen protector when it becomes nicked or scratched up.
Well, my time has come - I dropped my phone onto a metal bracket which chipped the protector up pretty good, so its time to replace.
Newegg seems to be the only ones carrying this protector -
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16875868289&cm_re=s7_active_screen_protector-_-75-868-289-_-Product
Has anyone attempted to replace this - it looks pretty simple, but my biggest worry is getting dust between the two layers.
May take this to a pro to try and avoid the dust issue - not sure what I am going to do yet.
Chris
definitely keep us informed of what the outcome is ..
as there was and still is, lots of rumour, and nothing confirmed that this is even doable/real !
EDIT, just looking closer on the pictures, it shows cut out holes for proximity, and camera ...
and the original does NOT have these ! .. well i certainly cannot see any on mine ... ?
That looks like a normal everyday screen protector.
It sounds like you are wanting to replace the permanent glass that covers the display.
I will let you all know what it is - I ordered 2 and they should be here Tuesday or Wednesday of this upcoming week....
Chris
It exists!
The golden unicorn does exist! Check it out.
Chris
wahooo now thats interesting
also be interesting in how easy the old one comes off ! be nice to try get some pics of it coming off, and when fully off etc ...
and what its like underneath ! most of us have glass protectors over them !
so makes it a right proper screen material sandwich !! as standard original glass screen, then original film, then our glass protectors !!
hmmm great find )
The job is done.
I didn't take any pictures or video, because this needs to be a fast process (performed quickly) to avoid dust and dirt while you expose the screen layer to the environment.
Some tips:
a) Turn off any fans or AC before performing this project. Obviously, get in a area as clean as possible to do this.
b) The kit is pretty ingenious in its design. Basically the new 'layer' comes with some tape on one side of the protector - you line up the protector and then apply this tape to the SIDE of the phone. This HOLDS the layer in alignments so that you aren't messing around with it or getting your fingerprints on the layer
c) The instructions suggest removing the old layer first and then line up the protector, but I lined up the protector FIRST and then removed the old protective layer. That way the new one is ready to go, and you have less exposure to dust/dirt.
d) The tool that comes with the kit is great for removing the old layer, but follow the instructions and use it in the orientation described in the instructions (arrow down, arrow-side facing center of phone).
Maybe I just got lucky, but I didn't get any dust or debris when performing this job. I was quick about it as I knew longer exposure allows for dust to get in between.
All in all, for $20, if you have a scratched outer layer, this is your ticket to a brand new looking screen, provided you didn't pierce this protective layer during any type of accident.
Chris
Very cool. I was skeptical given that the newegg listing shows an s6 or s5 active!
I've removed mine and replaced it with glass and then a dbrand skin over that as another option for folks out there.

How can i buy this, do you have a link of the product? Thanks so much
I was so excited about this as my S7 Active's screen is a mess. Unfortunately New Egg is out of stock and I can't find another source. There are some on eBay but I don't think they are quite the same. Anyone know of any other options?
So I peeled off the OEM screen protector with a guitar pick and replaced it with a glass protector from Amazon. It's working fine and looks a lot better than before. I'm not sure if this a good solution as far as breakage protection but it looks good and won't scratch so easily.
Yes, unfortunately Samsung has discontinued the OEM screen protector. Samsung is quick to discontinue parts to sell new phones unfortunately. A tempered glass replacement should definitely help as long as you purchase a quality one.

Old post but was wondering how this was holding up for you. I had a ZAGG on my S7A when I first got it but my kid dropped it and the protector broke. Being my lazy self I didn't replace it not realizing how easily the poly carbonate cover gets scratched up. I thought about doing something like this but wasn't sure how it would last. I'm hoping to replace the phone within the next 6 months but all the surface scratches are driving me crazy.
Thanks for any help you can offer
It worked great for me. I traded the S7 edge off a couple weeks ago and it was still working great. I'm sure the screen isn't as shatter resistant with this solution but I couldn't tolerate the scratches. Any other questions just let me know.
Has anyone popped the screen to replace the battery? I've watched some You Tube videos how to get it off with a hair dryer or heat gun. They are a bit fuzzy on replacing the screen. Can the adhesive be replaced to keep it water resistant? Does anyone know more about this or have you done it before?

Questions on Tempered Glass Screen Protectors

Ive read afew threads and ive come to understand the differences in Screen protectors (tempered mostly) as that's what I'm going on. Also thanks to GravX for this wonderful thread of info - https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...s/galaxy-s9-s9-plus-screen-protector-t3760133.
But i still have some questions that i cannot find straight answers to and maybe XDA can help me answer them:
1) Those edge adhesive tempered glass protectors - do they actually fit perfectly on S9's and allow you to use the edge of the screen - Or - does the black strip (where the glue is) on the glass cover up the usable side of the s9? I ask cause i like the curved look of the s9 - its partly the reason I bought it. Using a protector that cuts it off even slightly is unacceptable.
2) The fact that most options on Ali are edge adhesive is really putting me off - but what are the disadvantages here > Could the glass actually fall off or come loose from **** adhesive?
3) With the full adhesive glasses (which is what i want ideally) - can the glue be removed safely? There is no point in buying two if after the first drop - the glue makes the screen unusable..
I'm scouring Ali atm for full adhesive - full coverage tempered glass. If there are some XDA recommend's- please do let me know.
Much appreciated.
I got a full liquid adhesive tempered glass. It was a cheaper version of the Whitestone dome on Amazon. I much prefer it to the edge adhesive ones I've had in the past. I haven't removed it, so I can't speak to the ease of removal of the protector or the adhesive.

See https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=80019983&postcount=169 for the full glue tempered glass screen protector that I purchased on AliExpress. I bought two two-packs (one two-pack for my wife's and another for my S9+). Installed them several months ago and they are still working great. I would definitely buy them again. The kits do not contain an installation jig like that provided with the Whitedome, but if you watch several videos and are careful you can still get a professional installation. I did on my first try, so I still have a spare protector and glue for each of our phones. They are cheap enough (about 1/10th the cost of the Whitedome) that you can certainly try again if your first attempt isn't acceptable.

i got the liquid too, can be removed with ease if you pull it out, screen is crystal clear, no residue :highfive:
The only thing I hate about these edge adhesive screen protectors is that if you just miss just a tiny bit, you have a huge risk of dust creeping in and it gets annoying. I messed up a bit, and I paid the price lol
This happens since the screen does not stick 100% to the whole screen. Sure, you get no bubbles when installing but you can get a situation like this happen. And it gets on my nerves every time I take notice of it... which is often xD
I bought this tempered glass screen protector from amazon:https://smile.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07C5...abc_0Z5CSCFC1JDNGNTPQB2B?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

[REVIEW] amFilm Ultra Glass Screen Protector

Hello all!
First time posting in a while, so forgive me if I'm a bit rusty. I just got my Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ yesterday, and my amFilm Ultra Glass Screen Protector today, so I thought I'd write up a little review. Sorry for no pics, but I was busy installing and trying to keep things dust-free
I've used Whitestone in the past but was disappointed with both my Note 8 and 9 installs, primarily because of the LOCA spiderwebbing on the edges. I figured I'd give another brand a shot, so I went searching here and found the amFilm Ultra Glass Screen Protector. A quick trip over to Amazon, and $40 later (for a full kit including *2* protectors) and here we are!
PACKAGING: The box is nice - wider and flatter than the WS product. It's clean and simple, but professional looking. Plus their website and install video are well done also. Inside the outer box are three smaller boxes. The largest contains the plastic frame, screen protectors, and wipes (I think). The medium size box contains the UV light and the MicroUSB cable. It appears to be identical to the WS product, but I don't know this for a fact, so take that for what it's worth. The smallest box contains the LOCA (2 tubes), extra absorption pads, plastic pin, tabs to place over the speaker, a bubble level, and a weight. Everything you need comes in this kit, including plenty of wet and dry wipes, microfiber cloths, and dust removal stickers. On the packaging is a QR code to go to the install video.
PRODUCT: Everything seems to be on the same quality scale as the WS product, with a few minor changes - 1) there is no LOCA applicator "bridge", you have to aim and dribble the solution by hand, 2) the pin is different - there's no more tilting the entire phone to move the liquid into position - the pin is angled and sets the glass down at an angle, and 3) the "fingerprint" weight (more on this later). Otherwise, if you've done the WS before, this isn't significantly different.
INSTALLATION: **REMINDER** REMOVE the factory plastic screen protector and clean your screen THOROUGHLY before proceeding! I ALMOST forgot, which would have been a disaster! I watched the video twice and didn't see any mention of this, so amFilm, here's a tip for you. Anyway, installation is straightforward -put the little feet on the bottom of the phone to bring it flush with the pins inside, make sure the screen is 100% clean, install the sticker over the speaker, apply the liquid (making sure to absorb any "splatter" before proceeding!), peel the protective film off the glass, place it, and pull the pin. Once the liquid starts to spread, put the weight where the fingerprint sensor is and let it settle and "ooze" for 3-ish minutes. (NOTE - it's hard to locate the fingerprint scanner, so you might want to mark the frame in advance with a Sharpie (another tip for amFilm - marking that plastic with some kind of raised bumps or hash marks might be a good idea, or maybe a film for on top of the glass that marks where to place it - just a thought). After that, it's bake-time under the UV light, then you're done.
RESULTS: I'm very impressed so far. The glass appears to be nice and clear, and I can't even see the little "spots" in the corners others mentioned. I lucked out this time and no dust specs at all. No bubbles, etc. the fingerprint scanner appears to be working fine, although I haven't re-registered anything. It DOES require a little extra "umph" to scan, but that's not a big deal. Part of that could be me getting used to an in-screen scanner. There was minimal over-oozing, and the pre-installed pads absorbed everything fine. Barely needed a wipedown afterward.
FITMENT: There appears to be no flaws in placement using the guide, or in the fitment of the glass. It sits flat, and lines up exactly where it should. The cutout for the front-facing camera is exactly where it should be, and it's not overly-exaggerated in size. The edges leave plenty of room for putting the phone in a case (I've tried 4 so far, all fit without touching the glass edge, so there's no worry about case push on the glue). The bottom edge is just a tad bit short, maybe a 1/16", but that could be allowing for larger cases (I don't use the big bulky ones, so IDK).
OVERALL ASSESSMENT: 4.5/5 Stars - Great product, especially for the price. I'll keep you posted on long-term wear & quality, but for now, I'd say it's a great deal versus the competition.
Great review. I just installed mine yesterday and I've had exactly the same great experience with the product. It really does work well with the fp scanner. I had a terrible time with the S10 plus fp scanner and the Whitestone. Great price as well. I'll buy again for sure.

So did everyone's. There's three or four threads about it already. And that's why the OP said to make sure to removed the factory installed screen protector.
Will this work with the samsung clearview cover ?
and can this protector be easily removed?
thanks
I just picked up a set of the amfilm install went flawless a lot easier than the whitestone I had on my S8 fingerprint worked right of the bat with what I had already registered I think it even sensed it better than the stock protector that came with the phone, well spent $40 bucks on amazon
Forgot to mention it fits perfect with my otterbox case

Not sure about the Clearview cover, I haven't ordered it yet.
As for removal, it uses LOCA glue to adhere the screen protector to the phone, so it's not the easiest thing to remove, but will come off with a little effort. You will want to have lots of alcohol wipes handy to clean the screen afterwards. Maybe a few Band-Aids, too
AMfilm doesn't seem to gather dust at the edges like it did with the Whitestone install on my Galaxy Note 9. That's a blessing! I was always cleaning clingy dust away on a daily basis. The edges on this install are clean!

Hey Ray, do you know why? is it because of different density loca glue? I really want to switch to glass protector but hesitant because of dust built up around the edges.

yep. works with every case i got so far. Might have issue with the ones with a front plastic piece though like on some heavy duty cases.
not sure about removal, but ive not had issue with any loca based one so far in the years ive used them.

It must be a difference in the glue, I don't know what else accounts for it. I had really fuzzy edges all the time with WS.
How hard is it if you want to remove the screen protector pls?
I'll add my review...
I applied this to my S20+ yesterday. The steps were clear on paper, but the video was more helpful still.
Everything went fine with the exception that when I opened the adhesive tube it sprayed out a bit even before the top cap was opened, and I suspect this is due to me living at a high altitude. As a result my glue didn't fully spread to the whole screen, but close, and there were many small bubbles in the center of the screen. Next time I might try opening and closing the top first to equilibrate pressure.
That said, this is a promising product. It has a smooth and even finish, remains low profile so my case fits which still wraps the lateral edges, and the fingerprint part works a bit better than with the cheap plastic screen protector that samsung supplied (which also scratched easily).
I've never used screen protectors on prior phones, but this product is nice enough that I'll use it on future phones as well.
Additionally, the customer service was outstanding and they immediately sent me a replacement protector and more adhesive to try again.
Thumbs up so far, I'm confident my next application will be successful.
For those who installed this last year, how has it held up?

Sorry, haven't been on XDA much. I've had my amfilm since Dec, 2019 and it's still like new. Oleophobic coating has not wear off.
