No Mac Address(No WiFi) and Setup Wizard stops responding, SS Included - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

The WiFi stays toggled off and wont turn on whenever I restart the devices. Sometimes it works, but not most of the time. And the Setup wizard stops responding only once for each time you factory reset the device. Not sure if they are related, but I hope it helps. I'll also include a few screenshots below.

What was the precursor to all of this? An OTA update? ROM switching? Factory reset? A crash?

I updated to the latest one(PH1-OTA-PQ1A.190105.045), but even If I downgrade it still occurs. Mac address is 02:00:00:00:00 after I finish the setup.

Did you try booting to the opposite slot after the upgrade? Remember that the upgrade goes to the inactive slot, the current slot doesn't get touched. So just by switching slots in fastboot then rebooting, you can go back to the previous OS. If you flashed again since, then both slots have been overwritten.

Yeah. Same thing happens. I am able to get the wifi to work on random restarts, but that's it.
Are there any WiFi drivers available?

If it works randomly, my first things wouldn't include fussing with drivers.
Have you booted into recovery and wiped cache?
Have you tried in safe mode?
To get to safe mode, with the device powered on, press and hold the POWER button until the POWER menu displays. Then long press on POWER OFF. This should bring up a dialog confirming you want to boot to safe mode.
This will disable everything except the basics. If everything works in safe mode, I would do a clean install.

Yeah, same issue.
I did fully charge my device and that seemed to help. Gonna see if it last below 50%.
And if not I'm gonna download AICP to see if it's a kernel issue.

[HELP] SGH-I337M Boots first into D/L Mode

I have a phone I am fixing for a friend, so I don't have a complete accurate history of what happened, so please bare with me.
Basically, you put the battery in and it boots right to download mode (Factory Mode), no power button required. I can then reboot it using the power, hold down the Vol-Down button and then I am prompted if I want to enter D/L mode, in which you can use Vol-Down to cancel and it boots like normal.
I have tried the following, nothing fixes it!
Factory Wipe
Root using CF-Auto Root
Every Key Combination Possible on Boot
Odin Stock Install
Kies Upgrade (just stalls on that)
It was not rooted when I got it, and now it is. I haven't installed any recovery yet, but am willing too. It has possible water damage, so it ain't going back to the store anytime soon. I can't even get USB Debugging to appear that it is connected, nor will ADB recognize it. But the USB is working and read/writing.
This isn't my first time working with this sort of stuff, I am just at my wits end, plus I'm a Sony/HTC/LG person, so if there is something I am missing with this wonderful(ly crappy) bootloader, let me know.
Thanks in advance!

If you can hold the vol-down and home button when you boot it up and get into Odin mode you should be about to flash the stock MD5 for your phone. Stock Canadian Odin files here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2269304
Also make sure to use the lastest version of Odin, 3.07 I believe. After you are done flashing with Odin you will have to boot into Recovery (vol-up when booting) and do a factory reset. This has always fixed any boot problems with my phone.

So did you go into settings, more, developer mode to check usb/debug?
USB debugging isn't required to flash the Odin MD5. One thing I did notice is that you should boot into Odin download mode before connecting your USB cable. I was having issues with Odin not detecting my phone and waiting to connect the USB cable solved that.

I was referring going to adb fastboot
see the thing is that flashing did work fine, it just didn't fix the problem. I guess in Samsung terms I am stuck in Odin download mode when turning the phone on. This is why I wanted to see of I could push some standard reboot command via adb to see of it would "jig" it into place, but no matter what I try it always boots into download mode first.
and yes, I did turn on usb debugging

Nothing is wrong with the pins, USB is working fine and can be used in any other mode. I got ADB finally, I guess it was just not playing nice with me before. However, still anything I try the bloody thing still insists on booting first into download mode.
Just an update, it is still booting into download mode, tried a couple different stocks and still no good result. Anyone suggest any of the options in Odin might help work? Like F Reset Time or Phone EFS Clear?

I have seen this elsewhere, one guy suggested, using Keis, and it took him 2-3 times to get the stock to stick.
As far as checking those items in odin, could brick the phone. he also said, he got nowhere using odin in this situation.
Have you tried maybe flashing a recovery via odin? could be the recovery is corrupt.
what does this mean: in which you can use Vol-Down to cancel and it boots like normal. <<< Can you boot to the OS?
I can imagine your frustration here...good luck.
I did try Kies and it would keep getting stuck at 10% (I let it sit overnight) so I had no luck with that...

Yes, I have gone from stock recovery to CMW and back to Stock and still nothing. As for you other question, yes, I can boot into Android. The downside is I can't turn the phone off unless the battery is pulled out. This is why I bought an HTC One and not an S4 lol .. thank god this isn't my phone, but it is frustrating because of all the things I've tried to do to fix it.

[Help needed] Phone will not boot after getting pop-up message

Update: *SOLVED*
I got a strange message that popped up on my phone this morning. It stated "It's gonna rain. Take a umbrella with you". It stayed on top everything else and wouldn't go away. I thought that it could possibly be one of my weather apps and got stuck, so I rebooted. After that point, it gets to the Google loading screen animation and never passes. After subsequent reboots, it does the same thing. I am able to get into TWRP recovery though.
Does anyone know what be causing this and/or how to remedy it? Might it be some type of malware? I have attached a screenshot of it.

well, since you can boot in twrp you can do a factory reset.
safe mode is a better idea but i dont think you can boot into safe mode without starting the phone.
here are the steps but i dont think it will work so try to delete dalvik and cache from recovery, if that didnt work I think factory reset is the only option unless someone has a better idea
Make sure your device's screen is on, then press & hold the Power button.
In the box that opens, touch & hold Power off.
You’ll see a “Reboot to safe mode” box. Touch OK.
Your device will start up in safe mode. Try using your device normally. Remember, you won’t be able to use any installed apps

I tried clearing the cache and dalvik earlier, along with deleting the GO Weather app files, but that didn't help. I thought about safe mode, but I don't see a way to do it without already being booted to Android.
What if I dirty flash the same stock 6.0 ROM I'm using? I'd like to keep files and apps intact, so I'd prefer to not perform a factory reset, but will if I exhaust other options.
I just realized that I never came back here to update on what happened. I wound up booting into TWRP recovery, connecting to my PC via USB, backing up any data that I needed, then factory reset. That took care of it. Luckily, that also cleared up some other minor, but annoying, issues I was having. Needless to say, I haven't been and won't be using GO Weather EX any longer.

I9505 bootlooping & not booting

Galaxy S4 I9505
Phone was second hand to me at the start of this year, though had been well looked after, always in a case etc
I flashed it with the newest stock ROM in January this year
I9505XXUHOJ2_I9505BTUHOJ1_I9505XXUHOJ2
& rooted with CF AutoRoot
It has worked fine until about 2 weeks ago, when it randomly shut down. After restarting, it kept bootlooping.
Left it off & charging overnight, & the next morning it booted ok. Managed to use spotify for a few hours.
Then it started bootlooping again, sometimes getting all the way but then crashing after a few minutes.
Managed to boot into recovery & do a 'wipe cache', that didnt fix it.
'Wipe data' didnt fix it
Have flashed the PIT file & ROM (via odin), no errors in odin, done it twice now
wiped cache & data
still wont boot past the white splash screen, only sometimes boots into recovery
(also, only the menu button lights up, not the back button.)
I've checked the power button (clicks & dosnt stick)
Dont think the batteries the issue (charges fine, dosnt get warm, isnt bulging)
What else could stop it booting?
Have you tried booting into safe mode?
Safe mode, from what I read, can be accessed by holding the menu button while the phone boots.
But you should also do some reading about it, in case I'm wrong.
The other idea would be to try a custom ROM.

Can't boot into safe mode
(& having read up on it, it would only not run apps that arn't already in the ROM)
Any suggestions for a custom ROM
& why would it work when the original official one won't?
Well, it's booted far enough to get into android & add a google account, then it bootloops again.
Then after leaving it off for a while, it will boot & let me look at settings etc, then bootloop
however
the menu soft key stays lit all the time after a boot
the top half of the phone, around the camera, gets very warm
Does that indicate it's a hardware issue?
Could it be the battery?
If it's the top half warming up without you doing anything, it's the motherboard.
Boot into recovery and and let it stand by, see if it reboots.

The battery can't prevent the ROM from booting. It would have to turn off during the boot, which it doesn't. So, by my logic, it isn't the battery.
Try official CM.

Can't get past TWRP

Phone was working fine yesterday. Went to sleep and woke up to the phone booted into recovery. Now I can't get it to reboot past recovery. Anyone know why this happened or how to fix it?
Thanks in advance.
Check and see if system is mounted. Also are you sure that it didn't attempt an update last night?
The EXACT same thing happened to me this morning! Unfortunately I had to get to class before I could figure out how to fix it. When I get back home tonight I will try to get my phone to boot like normal and will tell you how I did it.

If that doesn't work plug your phone into your comp if possible and check to make sure you still have everything on your phone. Another time I had accidently wiped everything and only way to get back up was using the kdz

Have you tried power on and volume down to go through the factory reset screens.
A bunch of us had this problem and it was because an update downloaded on it's own and the bootloader snoops it out and forces recovery to boot.
Just do the volume down + power button - as soon as you see the lg logo release power only then immediately re-press power and continue holding power and volume down until the factory reset screen pops up. Select yes and yes, (don't worry - if you have twrp recovery it can't reset). It will boot you into TWRP and I'm pretty sure it will delete the update files in fota folder.
In TWRP select reboot - system and it should boot normally like nothing happened.

if this dosnt work
use twrp file manager to go find the fota and mis folders,
or boot into fastboot and send these comands
fastboot erase misc
fastboot erase fota
data/mis
data/fota
something like this is its path.
data/etc/misc
data/etc/fota
this 2 spots have the update commands that cause twrp loop.

Bootloop into TWRP recovery
Thank you so much, I too was having a panic attack after I flashed a custom rom and it some how altered this and put me in a boot loop into TWRP. I had a couple of questions in regards to ROMS that have native tethering enabled. 1. Is there one that allows Native tethering enabled for sprint? and 2. Is there one that you can update the PRL and profile settings and also one that does use an APN that has DNS issues and a proxy that blocks certain sites? currently I downloaded the ROM that is on the Dirty Santa site its called LS997-deODEXd-signed and it has a hidden proxy that blocks DNS from certain sites also you cannot update.

Download one of my 11 roms ive currently put out.
they all work 100% as far as dns stuff
for tether you need to add the "dun" to your apns. There isnt currently a built in mod.
as well as using shortcut master to add the "dun" to your apns also gets you to where you can change them
prl and profile updates work also as well as fm radio, wifi calling, fingerprint, comfort view etc.

I had to do this again today. This is not good. How can we stop this? I rely on my phone as an alarm clock and this could really screw me if it happens again at night.
Have you frozen or disabled the apps that look for updates?
Supposedly this is what causes it. The bootloader looks for update files in the folders where updates are downloaded and if it finds a file there it reboots recovery.
You have to remove those files, ( I think it automatically deletes them if you go through the factory reset process with the volume down, power button sequence).
And you have to freeze or disable the update apps.
These are the apps I froze. The 3 near the bottom that are blue.
i did this https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/help/lg-v20-access-to-fastboot-t3557328
Most bootloops are caused by an update file residing on the internal memory. It is not necessary to do all of the stuff in that post. You just need to do the volume down / power button trick to go through the 2 factory reset screens.

e.g., I press the power button then choose Restart option.

That sounds like a bootloop. What happened prior to this starting? Update, flash a ROM, install an app, install a kernel or Magisk, sudden power off due to low battery?
As a general rule, I would fastboot flash the same or newer stock to recover. Or sideload an OTA to recover. Those are available on the Essential developer builds page.

As ktmom says, also I'd specifically like to know if it was after the Feb update this occurred do you also have TWRP installed as a couple of others do that may have the same issue, see
https://forum.xda-developers.com/essential-phone/help/booting-feb-security-update-t4045545
edit: see bornroyal comments on other thread, serms TWRP not compatible, but someone on reddit made a compatible version.
ktmom and IronRoo,
This has been happening to my phone for atleast 4 months now.
I usually reboot the phone not often but sometimes. lets say once in two weeks.
PS:
I am stock and unrooted.
Accepted and installed the latest update.
I think you might be served by a factory reset. If course, that means you lose everything on the phone.
If that doesn't help, my knee jerk is the same, I would sideload the OTA.
Actually, I personally would unlock the bootloader and fastboot flash with the wipe to both slots. Or, sideload the OTA to one slot, them reboot to bootloader, if necessary, switch slots and sideload the OTA again. In theory, rebooting after sideling should switch slots so I would pay attention to where I start and where I am each step. OTAs, by design flash to the inactive (opposite) slot.

Factory reset is a good option.
I have used 68GB so far. What app or software do you recommend for backup and restore the contents ?
Have you done any factory reset on your phone without loosing any data?
How long would the reset would take with 68GB of data?

edit: see bornroyal comments on other thread, serms TWRP not compatible, but someone on reddit made a compatible version.

The person on Reddit only made a patched boot.img for magisk, twrp is still out of the question on the February patch

hey!
Device is having power-up issues.
e.g., I press the power button then choose Restart option.
During power-up cycle, the phone always hangs. Device is stuck on the screen displaying Essential logo and the Powered by Android. ??
Any help, would be appreciated.
PS: Every time I am forced to hold the power and lower volume buttons to reset the power cycle.

Mine and my wife's phone does the same thing. Just be more patient and wait for 5 min and it will complete the reboot. This length startup started to happen a few months ago.
