Best app for mileage tracking? - Android Head-Units

Has anyone found an app that works reliably for mileage tracking?
I have so far tried MileIQ, which triggers on most drives but misses some, so I don't really want to pay for an app that doesn't catch all my drives.
I also tried 'Simple' as it was free, but it doesn't trigger at all.
These are both tested after opening up the app at the start o the drive. My guess is they use some sensors that the head unit may not have to trigger drives, like an accelerometer. TBH considering the unit is only ever on when I'm driving I would be happy with an app that logged my mileage as soon as it turned on.... so if anyone knows of an app that is easy to program with tasker or the like then this may do. I also need it to be able to output these drives in com common format like CSV.

What is by far the coolest thing you can do with your Hermes

I am currently getting bored with my Hermes, I have flashed about 10 Roms in the past few months and I have followed the herd on almost every customized look we can come up with (Black, Custel, iphone lookalike, kaiser lookalike) you name it.
SO I thought I would reach out and see what other people are using their Hermes for. First and foremost I use mine as a phone. Anyone else? I also use Tomtom for Nav and orb for music and videos. Once and a while I stream XM too because I have an account. But thts about it.
I would love to hear about what else I can do and what other people think the best thing they have found on the Hermes is. I'm curious to see how crazy it can get.

when I'm bored I use it to mess around with other people's phones and pc's,
funny how so many people leave their bluetooth on nowadays on both phones and laptops
I also use it to surf the net in classes (no laptop policy)
anyone else \()/?

Orb is awesome (I was watching Anchorman on my commute home this evening), also I use my Hermes mostly for work, so tons of email (100 a day or so), attachment viewing\editing). TomTom is a life saver, as is GoogleMaps (saves me lots of 411 charges). Besides that day to day stuff, playing with ROMs and using it to wow friends and co-workers ("I forgot my ethernet cable! how am I supposed to get online now?!"..."Oh, please... allow me" along with a million other examples), wardriving, camera, mp3 player etc.
When I am bored I use the cameras three shot panorama mode to do funny things like getting a friend to do different poses in each of the three shots when the photo is finished its pretty cool. Seeing the same person three times in the same shot doing different things can pretty funny and if you have an imagination you can do some wicked stuff, ill have to look around for some of my shots and post them.
Psiodon
haha Mike Channon you smart ass.. lol.
I use my Hermes as a webcam.. .. The guy mentioned above likes to see me naked for some reason..
I know it is stupid, but I find it cool to run old games using ScummVM. Friends are amazed when they see (and hear) Monkey Island or DOTT on this device. (for the same reason, I have DOOM on my Nokia phone )
The Pebbles application (bluetooth remote control) is fun to play around with, as it offers a great deal of controllers (touchpad, scrollwheel, ...). But I haven't got round to making a proper interface for the softwares I use (at the moment, I prefer to use Puppetmaster on my Nokia to control my laptop, is this also displays data from the application on the mobile screen).
From a technological point of view, the internet sharing via bluetooth is IMO one of the coolest features of the device.
Of course, being able to view movies or get some work done on a plane is great too. And then there is PocketFMS: connect the TyTN to a bt gps, and you get a moving map flight management system (yep, for general aviation!); which can be combined with weather data!
It is a cool device... but could be more stable at times.

I have a bluetooth to serial device, which means I can run terminal connections over bluetooth.. so I can use it to configure routers etc.. just plug the dongle into a serial port.. connect via the phone and there's no need to carry round a laptop for that anymore.
I also use it as a phone and pda of course for those things.. For a normal day it can practically replace my laptop for dealing with both windows and *nix machines.. Pretty good if you ask me.
If you really are that bored of it send me it I can put it to good use
(oh yeah and I play scummVM on it too )

My I ask what kind of bt-serial device? Does it have its own battery, or does it draw power from the serial port?
I have no experience with such devices, but the reason I'm asking is that I wonder if it is possible to connect a bluetooth GPS to a Nikon D200 (this has a serial port for a GPS, to allow for coordinates to be embedded in the exif header). Of course, a setup like this is not supported (I mailed Nikon with this question), but they didn't say it wouldn't work (they hadn't thought of this).
Thanks!

what can you do on a windows box via serial? on a unix/linux box: that must be pretty hard given its lack of VT100 support i.e. 80x24, and no wrap around lines.

wealth of info related to work.. (medically.. )
oh forgot to mention is i dont have to worry about mespilling something.
Orb is the best
The Slingbox player is always nice to have when there is time to kill.
The "coolest" (geekyest) thing I've done is use it to control my irrigation system. I have several Insteon home automation devices installed and when I needed to check all the different irrigation zone sprinklers, I just used the phone to remote in to the host PC and turn on/off each area while I walked around the yard and made adjustments. I could also use the same process to control all the lighting in the house as well.
+1000 for Orb.

Its one of these (I actually got it cheaper than this - from the manufacturer who also sells them on ebay himself but has none on there at the minute), expansys also do them
It's powered via a USB cable.. But i have a solar charging unit that outputs via USB and works fine with it.. so i dont need usb to use it.. does the nikon proivde 5v on any ports as that would probably work.. (maybe even the usb port if it has one and supports weird configs (not just to connect it to a pc as that wont suply voltage))
I have no idea if it will connect a bluetooth gps to a camera.. the closest i can try is linking it to my bluetooth gps and seeing if nmea flows to the serial port.. ill give it as go for you this week.

depends whats connected to the windows box .. or what software its running.. or what its purpose is.. (i work in telecommunications)
On a desktop theres probably not much point, but theres switches, analysers, ATM's all sorts of industrial windows installations that all have serial diiagnostics and terminals..
on a *nix box its pretty much the same deal.. if its running a serial terminal i can connect to it with mToken or Mobile Putty.. theres hundreds of different bits of serial kit you can connect too.. serial is serial doesnt matter that its sent via bluetooth to the PPC.
Works on routers and all kinds of switching gear.. it's absolutly invaluable to me!!
Cool things with the TYTN
I assigned VJCandela to one of the side buttons, this help locating the key hole to my door (home, not car, I am a responsible person!) when it's pitch dark and I polished a few with the boys!
This phone belongs in a James Bond movie, period.
possibilities are endless!
Orb is great!
The Slingbox pro is awesome!!!
Im was thinking the same think as far as what else is possible via these phones... the quest for home automation is what brought me here (via search)
I think the links in the 2nd post should keep me busy for a bit...

Wuh?
Methinks you didn't read his reply all that thoroughly.
Routers, at least enterprise class routers have serial managmenet ports - hence him specifically mentioning serial in the same sentence as routers and nothing else.
I'm not even sure I know what you're trying to say regarding VT100 support - which is just one of many types of terminal emulation (based on the old DEC VT100 video terminal). Windows itself doesn't provide out-of-band management compatible with textual terminals, but many servers *do* have serial out-of-band facilities which can in turn talk to Windows running on said server...think lights out managmement. Most Sun servers have serial access to both the PROM and running OS, and you can redirect a serial port to a console in Linux.
I'm betting that when the OP mentioned managing Winders boxen with his Hermes he was thinking RDP.
But you knew all that I'm sure. =)
I'm a musician - I use it as a guitar tuner (PhoneTuner), I have a spectrum analyzer (HASA) for finding feedback frequencies when doing sound checks, I use it to record songs I'm working on with an MP3 recorder(AudioNotes), to record lyrics (Word, Notes, or even putting lyrics into a Task item so it will sync over the air with Outlook). I use ORB for streaming media from my server while on the road. I use the LED light as a flashlight mapped to the push and hold button with VJCandela. I use it as a timer for Texas Hold 'em poker to decide when to double the blind (SPB Time). I have an english dictionary, and a spanish-english dictionary on it. I use it to read ebooks (HaaliReader). I use it as an RPN calculator (CalcNOW). I use INAV for GPS guidance with a bluetooth GPS receiver when on tour.

Backcountry Navigator and GPS on Nook Touch

Because of the low weight and low battery consumption I am trying to run the app Backcountry Navigator Pro on my rooted Nook Touch (TouchNooter 2.1.31) to bring on backpack trips. The app is a great way to download topo maps and have them accessible on the trail. The The app works as expected except when I bring up the drop down screen for the maps function when I bring up the sub screen the screen goes black and then the app restarts. Any ideas?
I have also successfully used Android WiFi to tether my nook but would like to use TetherGPS as well is there a way to turn on "mock locations" .
Thanks for all the great work.
Jim
I'm confused. Do you have this working with an actual GPS receiver?
Mock locations is not very useful.
I've had a GPS hockey puck connected (the old MS Streets & Maps unit).
I can get the data on a tty device, but the Nook doesn't currently have Location or LocationProvider.
I haven't gotten further than that.
Try USBGPS4droid in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1143329&page=5
Haven't tested it extensively yet but it seemed promising.
This is a great idea, especially considering the low prices for 16 and 32 gb microsd cards. I'll install the app on my NST and see if I can at least replicate your error
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda premium
As, I said, I haven't looked into this yet.
Still, using Mock Locations seems like a bizarre way to hook in.
Mock Locations is for developers so that they can try out there apps as if they were on Mt. Everest or Antarctica.
You still need LocationProvider.
I would think that the GPS being just a serial stream that the standard Android has code for dealing with that.
On a note. I measured my MS Streets & Trips puck, it takes 75 ma, a bit hefty.
Does anybody know of a cheap puck that takes a lot less?

Using front dashcam with RK3066/RK3188 units???

I just wonder if anyone has setup a front dash camera with RK3066/RF3188 head units. What application do you use to to record video from USB front camera in the background? How do you configure this application to launch automatically on boot and start recording immediately in background?
Thanks.
I have set up some USB cam apps. Right now I'm trying to get composite IN to record, but. So far "CaroO Pro (Dashcam & OBD)" has worked out the best for me. All of the settings you're asking about are easily located and configured in the app. I can have it start with movement/when my car starts/when I tell it to. It also has the option to run in the background. The other feature it has is a floating widget if you like to either see your car information. Or to take you back into the main app. Another nice thing about this app is the it connects to your bluetooth OBD adapter if you have one. Giving you a lot more information if you are looking for that sort of thing. My second choice is "AutoGuard Dash Cam - Blackbox". It does not have as many bells and whistles as CaroO, but it gets the job done. All other apps I have tried have been more of a hassle to use and set up. I would suggest trying free CaroO trial and seeing what you think. I am not sure if this helped at all, but I will be here to answer any other questions if you have them.
Has anyone got this working?
I have an Eonon G2110z head unit running KitKat and am trying to set up a dash cam. I have tried a "video in" camera (which i'd prefer to use) and a usb camera but all the dash cam apps I've tried ( about 10 I think) say they can't find the camera.
Is there any way of telling Android that the video in is where it expects the phone camera to be?

My USB camera works perfect and almost all apps recognize it. It's one of those board cams they usually use with Raspberry Pie/Arduino. It seems for the best results to look for a UVC compliant USB camera. I am not an expert in any way with these standards. But they seem to be highly compatible with Linux/Android due to them only needing to run off of a generic driver like thumb drives/external drives.
As for the video in/AV/RCA type, I still have not figured this one out :/
*A not much help rant that can be ignored: I did get an image to show up from my dash cam using a dumb/convoluted way. But it would always freeze. The flow was: micro HDMI on dash cam to standard HDMI to an HDMI digital to analog RCA converter. I have also tried the 2.5mm AV out on the cam to RCA. I think it was the same result, but now that I write this I want to go try again...
Sorry I am not much help. I hope you get this figured out. If you do, I would be forever thankful if you shared your results
I'm currently using Daily Roads with USB camera usually sold with those headunits. Problem with this apk is that it can't save last recoded file (when you switch ignition off). Can you confirm that carO pro saves last file properly?

Many thanks for this, I'll see if I can grab one of those UVC compliant cameras.
It seems to me that the apps just look for what android presents as the phone camera- maybe the trick is to get android to think that the av is the phone camera?
AV plays perfectly on the screen when I select the video player.
I used the DailyRoads app with a Logitech USB camera with decent success. I had to use another app to auto-launch the DailyRoads app on bootup. The only issue that I had was the camera picture seeming to get too bright or too dark in some situations. Manually stopping and re-recording the video seemed to fix the picture, but this was not ideal.
Since installing my new headunit, I'm going to give some other apps a try to see if the problem lies with software or my camera. Thanks for the suggestion on CaroO, I'll give it a shot.

Sorry for the late reply. I meant to check that night. I tested it twice with car0. Once turning the car off and letting the head unit sleep. Then turning back on right away. And again but let the unit fully power down and boot up. Both times Caro0 saved the videos perfectly fine.

That Caro0 app works well but doesn't "Autoload at start-up".
I've installed a basic app that autoloads Caro0. Autostart - No root
In settings menu it only gives me option to save video to internal memory, Anyone any idea how to change from within the app?.
What USB cameras are everyone using? I want to pickup a cheaper one to test and see if I want to run a dash cam.

I have no problems getting Caro0 to auto start. It'll open the app back up when my unit boots if that was the last screen I left it on. Or I have the setting checked to auto start once I begin to drive. I will have to look where my files are stored. I remember having issues with this too. I'm pretty sure I have them recording to a flash drive now. I will check.

Hi guys!
Any luck with AV IN (RCA) video recording from back/rear/reverse camera? I have a Joying rk3188 JY-131 unit but not any look. The device coming with 2 cams, front\DVR is USB with night vision, the rear is analog camera. The front camera is not very good because IR LEDs working continuously and that make the video and picture quality very bad at day light Some suggestions to fix that problem?
I had an android rear view mirror and it can recort simultaneously with front and back cameras. The program is FireEye.apk, i tried to install a different versions at my double din, but no one work.

Hi wigglitz!
Any progress recording the brightness? I just ordered the same cam for the same purpose...
Could you post an image of your cam housing - or even better post the 3d printer file?
I'm using USB and have mine as a front camera (front grill) for curb stops mainly. My car sits low. Using the default DVR app as well. Works beautifully. Found a weatherproof usb cam specifically for it too, since most dvr cams aren't weatherproof. I love it!

I like the one that carjoying sells. I did not buy from them but have the same model.

It works great to attach to the back of your rear view mirror because of the shape of the body. I have mind there and the wires go up into the trim and you can't even see that it is there.

Bump
I connected a Logitech C910 webcam to my head unit instead of the crappy low-res camera that came with the unit.
Now I'm trying to find a decent app that will record in HD and save the files to an external SD card.
Autoboy works great, great video quality, but doesn't give me the option to record to the SD card, therefore it's useless for me.
CaroO doesn't seem to work at all with the C910, it connects to the OBD, but doesn't show the video (failed to initialize)
The stock Car Record app saves to the SD card, and sees the C910, but doesn't record in HD
Any suggestion for an app that will do what I want?

DIY Car Black Box

Hi, just wondering if I could use my old phone as a Car "Black Box". In other words, with it connected to the OBD-II (OBD2) port, could it log all my driving data (when I accelerated/braked, indicated for a lane change, tracked my revs and speed, GPS tracked my route, etc)?
I mean you certainly can. There's plenty of bluetooth OBD2 modules that will connect to your phone through a variety of apps, though you might have to sift past those that require subscriptions or active provider plans or similar requirements, but I'm sure there are some that work with free phone apps to do what you're thinking.
I guess if you have an old phone doing nothing otherwise, you might as well chuck a big sd card in it, or even use an OTG adapter to connect a larger storage, and hell you could even use it as a dashcam or interior cam as well, or at least provide storage and viewing for a dedicated camera otherwise.
Might as well be as protected and secure as you can!

Which android stick did you end up going with? Also does it work in full screen?
I tried one from Amazon but it only works through apple carplay so it only shows on 2/3 of the display.

Hey, this is kind of a stupid question but.....along similar kinda thought, when I connect my phone via USB to my car, is there a way I could see and change the stock parameters in the sound system to something more like my liking. I use wavelet with my phone and when I plug in with USB in the car to drive even the car is effected. Without the wavelet it doesn't sound the same. I'm wanting to see if I can somehow do that so I don't gotta plug my phone in with wavelet. Cause sometimes wavelet acts funny.

I am using the M-Stick MG-S01 off Amazon.
It don't show the whole screen but most. It's also not the greatest, but it works for the most part. Which one are you using?
I was able to get ADB to recognize this system. However I get the error from android ADB tools "The Secure ADB mode is enabled. Please use the GM Secure ADB Client tool to authenticate first." I am looking for a way around this. Any ideas?
Also note I have firefox and airscreen(airplay mirroring) working in the GM emulator so if only ADB worked we could be having so much fun.

I also have a refresh Silverado and just tried a CarPlay box, how did you get it to go almost full screen? Mine still shows the side scroll menu with the clock and media player
I'm assuming you know how to activate developer mode by going
Touch "Settings"->"About"->"Build number"->then tap the white file name several times and it will count down how many taps it takes to enable it.
Still trying to figure out how to sideload apps if anyone has made any progress.
