I switched from the Nokia N900 to the Note 2 weeks ago.
Were I never had any problems with the call quality with the N900, with the Note it's impossible to make any normal phone calls.
I get a connection, i can hear the other person very well, but everybody is telling me my voice sounds like I am in a tin box.
Its very bad to here what I am saying.
I tried a lot off things.
-First a hard reset (sim out, and than *2767*3855#)
I didn't put any backup back, the note in factory state and I have the same problems.
-I switched it to GPRS mode only.
Same problem.
If I Look in "Settings/About Phone/Battery usage" and I click on top off the screen, I can see my Phone Signal is not green as it should be.
Sometimes it is, but it turns to yellow very fast and after that it turned in to grey.
Strangest thing is, that in "Settings/About Phone/Status/Signal Strength very often the strength is -80, 90, or above 100. (so it is normal to have a bad connection.)
But even when it is -around - 50 dBm I have a bad call quality.
An other Sim (other network provider) has the same problem.
Should I return it or is there an other way to solve this?
Don't you have any problems with call quality?
Hi, I just wanna tell you that the quality call is PERFECT with my Note. The noise cancellation works perfectly well. My friend couldn't even notice the noise traffic surrounding me. It's also loud enough. No complaints for me.
I've made the latest upgrade via KIES (KJ9) I guess. I didn't make any call before the upgrade, so I can't tell whether it's the upgrade that's solved the problem. Good luck with your phone, hope you find a solution

I face same problem with my Samsung Galaxy S, but it was issue to all with sound driver. I got Voodoo control plus, then it was almost normal.
But in My Note, there is no issue at all. May be it cud be your mic related problem. And i heard voodoo control wont work with Note, as it have yamaha codec, non supported with voodoo
Same problem for me. When I disable Noise Cancellation, my voice gets really live and nice. Everybody hears me fine, but with NC on... well I have to shout.
I went from an N900 to the Note as well but no problems with call quality, it sounds fine to me and no-one I've been speaking has said anything about it sounding poor to them
Seems like i have to talk louder with nc on. Even though im in a quiet room. I have to block the top hole then its ok. Must be a software bug

We are some people affected. Just waiting for someone who can implement NR off in the phone.apk
Look at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1344659
EDIT: Afther KK9 upgrade, the call quality has improved quite a lot !!!!
Mine works fine.

Well I haven't updated yet cos of vodafone taking it's time to completely activate my plan but I have no problems either. In fact my girlfriend says I'm much clearer on this phone than my old one.. (although that was a low-end non-smartphone from Nokia, so maybe the comparison isn't so telling..)
Thanks for the reply's.
An upgrade to the new firmware isn't possible for me.
I'm from Holland, and my phone has the PDA:KJ4 / Phone KJ4 / CSC:KJ4 (KOR) firmware.
I don't know what (KOR) stands for, but I got the message onscreen that says : GT-N7000 does not support firmware upgrade.
I didn't know about switching off NC would help, but I am gonna give it a try!
Thanks for now.
i got the note ....eu rom and UAE rom..the qualities are good now one told me about voice problems....about the kies not upgrading...did u install another rom? if yes...try the CSC change code ,,,change it to xeu (eu) if u cnt do that...flash XEU rom via odin then do the CSC change code to XEU and it will be supported....i used to hav eu rom...but i need arabic support so i changed to UAE rom...then kies told me i cnt upgrade...so i had to change the CSC code to XSG ....then i got kies support again
Strange...I've tried 3 different firmwares so far, no problems at all. The calls are a little bit on a quiet side but I guess the noise cancellation does it's magic and I can't say that I had to ask anybody to repeat anything nor have I been asked to do the same so far. Sounds rather like a faulty phone...bad mic or/and speaker...
Where is this noise cancellation found? But to be honest i have found call quality to be fine on mine

I changed the CSC Code (kies wont allow you to upgrade if you have KOR code, as this is the generic one and it is not linked to any region)
Just type type in *#272*IMEI# in your dialer (IMEI=your IMEI number)and it will come up a menu to choose the CSC.
I choose DBT (Germany) and after that was able to update via Kies.
NOTICE THAT CHANGING THE CSC CODE WILL RESET YOUR TERMINAL AND YOU WILL LOSE ALL YOUR DATA (factory reset).

Will changing the csc void the warranty? If it doesn't then I will do it immediately! Thanx for your help!!
If I can change this in DBT, I always can go back i suppose.
So I tried, but the code you gave doesn't work.
I did a little research and discovered there's got to be a * in the code after *#272.
So the code should be *#272*IMEI#
Thanks for the tip, gonna try if it gets better
My call quality is horrible. Nobody can hear me and I have to repeat myself five times

I tried it, changed to DBT and after that XEU successfully.
Connected my Note to Kies but didn't got any update....
So I went back to KOR whiteout any problem.
What am I doing wrong?
Or, is it Kies on my macbook that ins't doing its job? Should I try on Windows?

Before changing the rom, I solved it by covering the upper mic with a adhesive tape. (faster way to disable noise reduction problem)

Yes, you'd better try on windows.
As far as I know there is a KK9 update for DBT, but I think there is nothing for XEU.
And thats correct.
I installed Kies on my wifes Windows laptop.
Tried XEU (no update), and tried DBT.
I am downloading the update now.

I've got an I337M, locked to Rogers, using with a Rogers SIM. After tinkering with Google Play ROMS and CyanogenMod almost as soon as I got the device, I wanted to try shooting back to the Samsung Official firmware for a bit.
I've downloaded the "RWC" stock ROMS, two different builds numbers, and I'm getting caught up on one thing with both of them. The phone restores fine, works fine, carrier shows as the Rogers, however, the carrier bloatware that's installed is for Bell. Not that I'm missing the Rogers apps, by any means.
I'm curious as to why this is occurring. Not that I will ever use said software, but it'd be nice to know what's going on. Are the ROMS online actually Bell ROMS and being relabelled as Rogers because they work?
Or, is there a setting somewhere on my device that I'm missing that has persisted through multiple wipes/restores and is causing this? APN settings are correct, and carrier appears to be showing up correctly in anywhere that it's shown in Settings.
Anyone have any thoughts or input on this?
EDIT: I might add I found this thread which explains my dilemma, however, I could find no solid answers as to what was done to cure this issue.
EDIT for me answering my own question: Through an obscure series of connections, I figured it out. For those of you that may fall into the same boat. Here's the instructions I found.
How to Change the CSC code:
Please note that performing the CSC change action will factory reset your phone. It means it will take your phone to the status as it was when you bought it. All data present on the internal storage will be wiped. Therefore, do not forget to backup you data before you proceed.
Open your phone’s dialer and type the following code with your device IMEI number: *#272*Phone’s IMEI Here#
You can find your phones IMEI number on a white sticker beneath phone’s battery.
You will see a pop-up screen with a list of CSC codes. Change-CSC-SGS3
Select the CSC that you want and tap on “Install”.
Your phone will be reboot automatically.
Congrats! Your Samsung Galaxy phone’s CSC has been changed successfully.

Excellent first post my child.
Hello everyone,
When I try to answer a call the ringtone volume will spike for a very short of time. The spike will make the volume peak at it highest. Anyone has this problem?
very annoying
Anyone
I've bought the note 4 just 5 days ago and I've just recently noticed this particular sound issue too. I'm wondering if it's just a software bug... It's so weird that just you and me are having this issue that I'm really thinking that it could be a hardware issue...
My friend also has the same problem. He use N910c as well

Do you still have this problem? Do you think that it's software related or hardware related? Does flashing a newer rom stones this issue?

I would love to have answer as well, but i'm in the same boat. However, I tried to set the same ringtone as an alarm with max volume and when i try to stop/snooze it doesn't do that. I even tried the MOD that is on the app section which change the volume on the note 4. It did increase my speaker volume but i didn't do anything in fixing the issue. I also tried to install an app called "Disable Increasing Ring" which remove the low volume on the first ring but it didn't help either.
I tried to post this on another forum looking for help and one guy said "Check the setting that maximizes the volume on ringing." I don't know what does that mean.

I tried the "Disable Increasing Ring" app too, because I initially tought that it was a bug of the increasing ringtone feature that is present since Android v.4.3... But it didn't work. I've also flashed another rom and the issue persisted.
I don't know... What drives me crazy is that some people have this problem but the majority just don't! Of it is a firmware problem, it should happen with everyone that has the same rom...
I'm also worried because this spike in the ringtone volume may damage the loudspeaker through time...
To be honest, I'm just about to return my phone!!!
Same here. 910c version.

I've tried 02 official stock roms: ZTO (Brazil - International Unlocked) and ZTA (Brazil - Claro Branded).
I did the Factory Reset and wiped the Cache Patition using the Stock Recovery, and then flashed these roms using Odin 3.09
Then I started the phone, didn't logged in my google account nor in my samsung account, and so I did'd download nor intalled any app. I didn't make any changes on the phone's configuration menu.
Then, with the phone like this, I've called myself using my girlfriend's phone and, unfortunately, when I swiped to answer the call the damn sound bug was still present!!!
Since I know many other users that run these roms and don't have this problem, I'm assuming that it's a hardware issue particular to my note 4 unit.
So I have no other choice: I'll return my phone as soon as possible!

Why not??? The point is that people running the same Samsung rom that I have simply don't have this problem. The fact is that every note 4 unit should be able to run a stock rom and not present this particular bug. I mean, it must be a hardware issue because my method excluded all the particular changes in the sistem that could be caused by apps or some configuration options... So, after excluding all those factors, if two identical models are running the same identical roms, the only reason that one unit has a bug and the other don't is that they aren't really identical, i.e. because one of them has a hardware problem/difference.
The other point is that if I want to use my warranty rights, I must not have root access nor use a custom rom, because I don't wat to trigger my flash counter or my knox counter...
So it makes absolutely no sense that I must loose my warranty and use a coustom rom to get rid of a problem that doesn't even exists in the vast majority of note 4 units that are able to run the stock rom without presenting this issue.

Okay, so, yes, I know to use the Search function, but alas all information is either outdated or there is no concise answers / solutions to be found. Trust me, I have scoured.
Overview: Okay so Thursday I bought an SGH-i337, being the nerd that I am knowing that I use MetroPCS (can't beat unlimited 4G LTE for $60) I scoured the net and researched ALL models of the S4 and G3. Decided the screen size of the G3 too big coming from a 5C. Decided Sprint's version might work, but not on 4G. Verizon, would switch from LTE to 2G with no 3G support, so that would be a desperation act, haha.
So, my main options were T-Mobile, then AT&T, because MetroPCS and T-Mobile were one and the same. All the people that had T-Mobile based phone sellers were being a pain in the butt to deal with... so, I found an AT&T owner that was ready.
The tragic love story: So on once I used the MicroSIM card in the S4 to cut an old full-size SIM to scale a border around my Nano SIM and finally got it placed perfectly to read... I was happy... which faded quickly as it was locked, how could I be so dumb!
So, the previous owner is now awaiting an unlock code as I found EVERY method to use the UMTS Menu is impossible to get to "[6] Phone Control" option. Due to that silly Auto Updating AT&T bloatware and Kernel upgrade/Firmware.
Okay, I should wait, but... does anyone know a way to get to the Phone Control menu using a secret code?? I have noticed some of the many codes go straight to the Debug Screen or go straight to the other menu options... so could there be one for Phone Control?
Also, maybe is there a way to get the phone to output the NCK Key manually connecting it to a computer and using a prompt? I may have heard about such a thing on SureWest routers through TelNet, to get the administration password... not that I personally have done this. Just feel like if these websites are able to use an IMEI number to charge you for a code... it has to be stored on the phone somewhere right?
Rooting and Downgrading
Also, has anyone tried the Odin way of downgrading and rooting these phones, has personally worked for them? I have found the threads on here and it seems pretty interesting... when I look at previous versions of Droid they look to allow more functionality for more advanced users than this 5.0, so if that be the case I am interested in taking this back to stock and beginning removal of all AT&T programs.
Maybe I am sounding like an idiot, but I have been on a Jailbroken 5C for... probably 2 years now and even with that it seems limiting to the curious, nerdy, mess with things side of me.
Summary:
- Should I just wait the 2-5 days for the code? / Would downgrading firmwares negate the entered NCK code if used prior to downgrade?
- Are there any known ways to unlock this model fully upgraded?
- Should I use the Odin methods of downgrading to stock? / Do you prefer previous versions over 5.0?
- What problems should have you guys faced / should I consider prior to doing anything?
- Should I just try to find a T-Mobile model of the S4??
Phew, sorry, if you read all of that and hate me for it, haha. Please, be knowledgable and not tell me how dumb I am for being so antsy to be able to use this phone w/o WiFi! Haha, you guys try using a 5C forever and see the screen difference / abilities you've been missing out on for so long!
Thanks!
The method of downgrading to 4.4.2 (aka NB1) then rooting and then going to lollipop by keeping the root has worked for me. There is no direct way, to root lollipop atm.
First downgrade to stock rootable 4.4.2. You can do this from any base, and/or use it if you mess your phone up (bootloops, etc). Link here. Second post on that thread, step 1. Make sure you download the rootable one.
To root it use TowelRoot. Run it - Tap make it ra1n - After a succeseful root, install SuperSU.
The follow this post here to goto stock rooted lollipop 5.0.1 (aka OC4). I recommend downloading the deodexed version, so you can install xposed if you want in the future.
Thats it for rooting lollipop. And now that you have root you can get rid of that bloatware.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
I personally, don't really fancy lollipop. High Ram usage.
Secondly, i bought this phone on eBay and it came unlocked, and even after flashing different firmwares, its still unlocked. I think if you unlock using that NCK code, the phone will stay unlocked forever.
Thirdly, the T-Mobile version has an unlocked bootloader, which is a big up in comparison to the i337. We are restriced to only using one costum recovery, that is SafeStrap. Others, don't work.
Thank you
I will probably have to go through that whole process. Got it unlocked thankfully, but am feeling as though based on specs and the little apps I have installed the phone should be a bit smoother in basic functionality especially Web browsing.
So yeah definitely already feeling your point in resource hog and though I disabled the bloatware, I don't think it helps being installed.
Also, figuring out after using the phone in my car that Galaxy has very quiet audio output via the 1/8" headphone jack. Seems that you can find volume controlled headphones easier than just straight cords! However, found this a known issue for all Galaxies and rooting it may be the easiest workaround.
Thanks for the organized list of information/insight! Now I will have some more stuff to geek out on... ?

I don't know, but cranking the volume to full on my phone using earphones, makes my ears hurt . The audio output on mine is great, nothing modified.

Yeah, I'd say it's probably fine with headphones, but through a car's auxiliary it is probably 25-30% quieter than my iPhone even at "full" volume.
Read that there are files to modify, but you have to be rooted.
What is this Mobile Data Toggle? Would it be really at all useful seeing as I have MetroPCS? * I assume that ridding AT&T is just a general tweak, which I do like getting rid of the carrier.

Mobile data toggle is used to enable Internet from your carrier/sim. Ridding the AT&T thing is sorta general because you need to have root.

sent from my Note FE, S8 plus, S7 edge or S6

+1 For the SM-N935K Model, not one single reboot, before or after the update.
@ixman
Sounds like you might be using a battery saving app (Greenify,etc...)
If so,I'd run w/o 'em,see if it makes a difference.
Any other "performance" apps in use, that weren't pre installed on the phone?
If no to all of the above,I'd suggest a cache wipe in recovery, followed by a factory reset if that doesn't clear it up.
If those don't do the trick, you may have got a phone with a physical defect, perhaps a loose-connected battery.
The random reboots are a classic symptom of that.
Please keep us posted on your results. :good:

Agreed, not had a single reboot on my K that wasn't initiated by me!
I've just did a cache wipe and factory reset after the last update. Will keep you in the loop if the random reboot returns.
The only "suspect" app would be GSam battery monitor pro, but I didn't had any issues with it on my Note 7.
I love the phone but it does have some annoying issues. Here in UK when I'm out of 4G area even if the phone shows 3G the data connection is very poor or non existent. I do have the correct APN settings from my provider. Also the maximum data transfer is nowhere near my iPhone 7 plus(Qualcomm chip). I expect more from a CAT12 modem.
One the flip side the GPS is very strong and the call quality/signal is perfect. Strange.
I would be interested to know from other UK users how their K model behaves.

My FE took forever to reboot after the update. No issues now with reboots now. Be careful with Adhell, i did something wrong and did not reboot.

I didn't realize you were having reboot issues, you're the 2nd person to report that here @ XDA.
Glad the update seems to have taken care of that for you.
As for AdHell,I'm glad another developer has shown interest in such an app.
It's been updated a couple times already, should continue to improve/offer more features.
One advantage Package Disabler Pro has is the Google search shortcut ,so those like myself can get a better understanding of what all of those background system apps do & make a better informed decision on what's bloat & what should be left alone.
Neither will work on a rooted device, that's when I use SD Maid Pro,it has the disabling option that works only on rooted devices (among many other assorted tasks that work on both rooted & unrooted devices to varying degrees).
interesting about the reboot issues... none here before or after flashing the full AQG2 ROM. changing my CSC to ATT's version used on the S8+ (after installing AQG2, TWRP and Root) and factory resetting afterwards removed a lot of the Korean apps, enabled a different set of roaming options and, provided access to a lot of features that's available on the S8.now, The only disabled app is SecurityLogAgent.apk. Knox is still present, but not activated. i've never taken time to debloat for fear of screwing up something. what am i missing?

You can take out all of Knox - most custom ROMs do that as a matter of course. The only apps that affect the device if you uninstall them are Chrome and Samsung voice input(!) - but disabling them is OK.
Found the update contains an updated Play Store app v11, which installs Play Protect. I don't use Play Store - and definitely have no use for spyware protection from Googz that I cannot control - so I've reverted to the original stock until more is known about GPP. No loss: the update provides no advance the I can see.
