Hey guys i'm not from this forum but from the galaxy ace forums.
I'm looking into buying this tab but I just want to know how good is it to live with everyday. I'll just be using it for everyday tasks, web browsing, music, movies and regular fooling around but I would also be starting my masters degree soon so I will want to to take some basic notes and that sort of thing.
I would also like to know how easy it is to root and install custom roms on it, also on average what kind of overclocks can be achieved if I ever need any extra horse power. I was also looking at the Nexus 7 but that does not have any expandable memory slot which sucks and also I think 4 cores for a 7" tab is just being wasteful .
But any way, what are your thoughts on it, I've watched and read the reviews and I know its a good tab I just a want to know how good is it a month or 2 later.
Thanks again for any input guys.
The only thing I wouldn't use it for would be note taking because of trying to type on the keyboard would feel to slow for me. For note taking, I'd think the Note 10.1 would be great because of the s-pen that you could use. It is really easy to flash anything custom to the tablet, just flash recovery via Odin or Heimdall, then boot into recovery and flash whatever you want. I use my tablet for web browsing and as an e-reader and it's fit my uses just fine. Also thinking of using it as a "portable" media player as well since the audio output from the small speakers is really good IMO, and it also has the same audio codec as the SGS3, WM1811, which is a really good audio processor.

go for it its an excellent tab...
No lags at all...
All your needs will satisfied in a premium touch even without rooting/overclocking the tablet...
It can be overclocked to 1.3 ghz and for rooting tutorial search the forum you will get it...
Thanks for the speedy replies guys...I'm really leaning toward this tab just because of its' priceerformance ratio
Its a great tablet for its price.
Pros-
Sim supported, 3G with 14.4 Mbps speed
Good battery life (comparing to other tablets)
Light weight and looks awesome in white color
64 GB Expandable memory
USB On the go support
Cons-
Some awesome games are not supported (i think it because its new developers will add support soon)
No Gorilla Glass
No HDMI
The Samsung galaxy is full worth the money dude I'm 24x7 online in it using 2g gprs the battery stands for more than one day and the screen on time is 5 to 7 hours depends on the usage with games and stuff that means you can continuous use upto 5 to 7 hours till drain this is he only best tab at 18k to 20 k price range with ICS and don't forget to update to 4.0.4 from 4.0.3 from the box good luck

Well, I strongly disagree about the note taking, I use Evernote, and for note taking it has been a dream-come-true! Its optimized for our screens, and syncs to their servers for backup. Price is very good for what you get. It has a couple of things other 7" tablets dont have, such as GPS (Glonass), and an IR emitter (universal remote for your entertainment system).
This tablet has also had most of its source code released so all the devs here should, in theory, have a field day hacking at it. It also has a very decent CPU and GPU; these chips are used in many other devices aswell, so their technically should be tons of support for lots of games and apps that indulge in nicer hardware (they run smoother, sometimes).
This has become my main music device. I use bluetooth headphones and they, and my tab, support Bluetooth 3.0 and Apt-X Bluetooth lossless audio codec by CSR; listening to music is simply delightful!
Bought mine to replace a Arnova 10g2 that was just not up to the job i wonted it for which was to read E books and Comics (My father now has it now! He loves it?) as the screen was really poor! Happy with the Tab 2 once over-clocked and cyanmod flashed! Got a bit disappointed with the announcement of the Galaxy 7 until they mentioned the lack of external memory support! Still if they release a Nexus 7 with external memory! Then I think my mother might soon be the owner of a nearly new Tab 2! lol!
Good screen, plays Dead Trigger well and SD Slot! What more could you ask for?

I'm generally pretty happy with this tablet, it was supposed to be a stopgap tablet until the Nexus 7 was officially announced but once I realized that there would be no external storage (which I pretty much knew anyway) I stuck around with this.
I'm not happy with the tablet but I am content with it, if that makes sense.
It doesn't have the fastest processors/gpu, the screen isn't the greatest and the proprietary dock (makes having to buy all new accessories a pain) but as
long as you come into this tablet knowing what to expect, then it's pretty damned good. It doesn't have a huge Rom community but that also cuts down on the over saturation
from some of the more popular phones (have you seen the Galaxy sII or Desire HD forums?!? Ai yi yi) off the top of my head, I think this has a Stripped down stock Rom,
CM9, CM10 (alpha) maybe a Miui Rom which covers all the major basics as far as I'm aware.
I've been running CM9 RC2 since about 2 weeks after I bought this and I'm pretty happy and Once I wake up from this nap I'll probably be flashing CM9 stable & supercharge
it.
I know that I didn't really productively answer your questions but I hope I gave you some perspective on the tablet.
P.S. The thing I hate and I mean hate is the limited internal memory (I think it's 4.7gb or some such) which didn't seem bad at first cuz I was planning
on buying a 32gb card for everything, but apps especially games chew into that space so damn quickly and it doesn't get saved to teh ext card instead, even though I have all my media moved to the external card, I still run into scenario's where I can't update apps because I get that dreaded notification Tablet space is low.
Dev's are working on ways to utilise ext cards for storage bbut there is nothing stable I'm willing to try yet.
I'm running CM1O and its sooooo cool.
The Tab itself is very nice to touch and use . The tab has a nice weight to it and is balanced to hold. one draw back is the placement of the speakers.... sometimes playing games the sound becomes "muffled" due to hand/control positioning. Same as charging /playing music , It is sometimes awkward to use, but not overpowering.
Cant say i have any issues with the Tab , apart from the ones that i have caused lol.
Screen quality is VERY good for a budget tablet /size, same as sound quality.
Storage could become an issue but has workarounds , but over all........ WOW.....LOVIN IT !!!11!!!
I liked it when I bought it but the Nexus 7 is far and away the better 7" tablet in my opinion with one exception. The advantage of the Samsung is the internal micro SD. If you are staying stock, and want to watch media from non cloud based sources, the Samsung is better. If you will be rooting, you can use an OTG USB cable and use micro sd cards on the 7. The 7 is better in almost every other way and has a plain JB interface without the extra bloat Samsung puts on their tablets. My guess is we may never even see an official Jelly Bean release for the Galaxy 2 given the speed at which Samsung updates their software. Of course, there are multiple JB ROM's already out for the Galaxy 2, just not stock versions.
My Galaxy 2 died last weekend. It would just go dead and then required you plug in to the computer and hold the power button for 60 seconds. As soon as the screen would shut off, the same issue occurred. I called Samsung and they were very quick to send me a shipping label to return it for repair. Within 4 days the unit was supposedly repaired with a "Software Upgrade (External Factor)" whatever that means. It should arrive back on Tuesday. Hopefully it is fixed.
Just my opinion....

I have no complaints. Does everything my Thrive does , i can put JB on, and have used this as a credit Card terminal. I had audio issues with a custom rom and video playback, nothing major. Only things i dont care for are the stock predictive text and that some of my tegra specific apps dont work (this having and OMAP cpu and all).
Was definitely worth the cash since it actually outperforms my Thrive for most uses and cost half as much. Thrive wins points for the full sized usb and hdmi ports though.
Thank you all for your time on replying...I think this is the tab I am gonna settle on...a good solid all rounder.
I have this (the 3G version) for a week now. So far I'm perfectly happy with the purchase. Excellent value for money.
I really like my tab 2 7.0", but....
My Pros
- TouchWiz actually has some nice apps on this device. File manager, email, pop-up apps, power toggles are nice features
- Speakers are awesome
- Expandable memory
- Works great with USB thumb drives, mouse and keyboard (with adapter)
My Cons
- Screen resolution sucks, things are blurry (like most Android tablets). Some newer devices like Nexus 7, Asus Infinity, iPad3 have HD screens
- No TV out
- TouchWiz although I think is quite nice slows it down at times. I rooted and froze a ton of unwanted apps. Not all can be to be disabled through native ICS settings
- Chrome that comes with the latest update crashes a lot. New bookmark widget is also bad. Install ICS browser+ from the market instead.
I got it yesterday, rooted and installed AOKP JB. The size feels perfectly great to me. I have not cycled the battery enough to give any input on tat. Games run awesomly well, including minecraft PE on fancy graphics. Its an awesome tab, i love it

the wireless receiver on galaxy tab 2 7" is the worst thing on this tablet, the second is the battery life with wifi on! i got mine, i like it but......
For typing, Thumb Keyboard is the best coming from a blackberry. The split keyboard is excellent and fully customizable. The only issue is holding this in portrait mode leads to the death grip but if you are note taking and don't need a strong wifi connection you got to try it. Landscape mode resolves this also.
I am going to try a custom rom to help boost this baby up a bit.
Yea this device may start out with OK performance but it does get pretty laggy. Rooting and running a Jellybean ROM will increase performance a good amount.

Should I buy a Nexus 7? I wonder why I should be buying such a thing... One reason is that I can use it to watch movies on the train more easily. It has easily more battery life than a notebook. I read I can watch up to 9 hours movies.
Instead I could be buying a Haswell build during Spring 2013
Don't forget I need to save up some money to go on holiday with my girlfriend.
i think it's all personal preference. sounds cliche, but it's true.
will you be at home more often to use the newly built computer? is it more important for work/school/etc.?
or do you prefer to be mobile, but always around wifi spots?
I think that a tablet is more something that you need in addition to a solid laptop. So if you don't have a laptop, then you are probably better off saving money and getting one.

I think a lot of people make the mistake of thinking that a tablet is a suitable replacement for a laptop or desktop... It's not, get a laptop or desktop first then splurge and get a nexus

Until a tablet can be a full laptop/desktop replacement, get the laptop, then get the tablet. While I don't use my laptop as much since I have a tablet and a smartphone, I still use it quite a lot.
Here's my situation:
I have a pretty powerful desktop that I rarely use now that I have my Nexus 7. Only time I sit in front of my desktop is when I'm updating my media library; which I listen to on my Nexus.
I'm contemplating selling it and buying something smaller along with a nice NAS and just stream my stuff from that.

I'm in the exact same boat as the guy above. I have a very nice gaming rig that i paid a nice chunk of money for and now i find myself sitting at my desk playing or messing with the nexus and only using my desktop for spotify. With all the movement toward mobile/tablet gaming and loads of bluetooth controllers to combat touchscreen controls i'd go with the nexus. You won't regret it.
a tablet don't sobstitute a laptop..but for the use you sad i think it's the devices for you!and i'd want to try yours kernel in the future for this...
How well does a Nexus 7 play GTA or other highend games?
Well I will certainly develop for the Nexus 7. But I mostly support CyanogenMod :fingers-crossed:
From my experience with Google Nexus I see many problems because the kernel is very integrated in the ROM. Franco and other developers use custom frequencies which are not changed in the ROM. So actually the power mananagement will not be working properly. however it might be different here
I am only scared I will buy this thing and it will be of no much use to me.
Also how big is 7", can I still put it in my pocket or not. I might wait for the Nexus 7 3G, maybe not.
So I am still waiting for answers on:
- Does it play the latest high-end games? Eg: GTA, ...
- Battery life is it really 8 hours? Is it significantly more than my Nexus for example which seems to like to drain to 0%? How is this for heavy use?
- Are there any technical issues I should be aware of? Is that screen lifting thing really bad? Or shouldn't I be worrying about that?
Problem is development for Nexus has stalled for a while. I have school, girl friend, and one day in the weekend which I work in a pub. But I still do my best trying to push things.

Power management for kernel settings, use trinity kernel toolbox it overwrites in rom settings. I dont have a single hardware problem with my nexus, software is dependent on what you install. If they are high end android games they usually work well, some have to be updated/optimized for a tegra3 however. I usually get 6-7 hours out of heavy use, but im overclocked to 1.7ghz with a96 trinity kernel and running glazed jelly bean rom. I think thats all you wanted answered, hope it helps. (I run asphalt7, nova3, and modern combat 3 with no problems at all.)

Ok thank you that's all I wanted to know. 6 hours battery life is definately a win over the Google Nexus' 2-3-4 hours.
So I’ve owned a Lumia 810 for the past two weeks. The phone has been a joy to use. Love the camera, weight and design, the screen is fab, the OS is zippy and the Nokia exclusive apps are nice. But by the title, you can tell that there are a few things I’m bummed about (some device specific, some OS specific)…
- Limited accessories. While design wise, it hink the 810 is the better looking version of the 810/820/822 model, I can’t find accessories for it. I can sneeze easily and find 820 accessories though. Counting down the days to the cyan shell being available…
- Battery life. This thing gets me about the same run as my Galaxy Nexus. Actually, it is better than the G-Nex in that when in standby mode, it feels like my old E-63. But when you start to really use it, the battery will go down fast. I’m also bummed because I cannot find the coveted spare battery. I’m used to having a spare one on hand so I’m never out of power.
- windowsphone.com is still a pain in the $#%! to use. I just hate how MUCH scrolling you have to do in order to find apps that you’ve previously installed. If you’ve tried a TON of WP apps like me, this is torture to scroll through. Especially when there are pulled apps you bought that you like and have saved (APP Reinstaller doesn’t show these). Fortunately it looks like you can side load them*.
- The internal storage SUCKS! As much as I love my card slot, I would love to be able to put a few things on there that are tied into the phone storage. For example, Nokia maps get saved to the phone memory. It makes sense, but I download all the US maps for offline use and I have less than 1 GB free with all my other apps installed. Wish we could move the maps to the SD card.
- I’d like some of my Zune player syncing capability back please. I’m cheap and own a machine running with XP and because MSFT killed the sync option, since I cannot fully edit and create playlists on the phone outside of saving now playing lists, drag and drop is ALL I got. Damn. So no more of my good Zune playlists.
Are these deal breakers? No, but the good thing is all can be fixed over time. I hope they get fixed sooner than later though because these are niggles that can sway converters back to the confines of iOS and Android.
So, for all the other Gen 1 WP8 adopters out there...are there any quirks about your model or the WP8 experience that have bummed you out so far?
Coming from an HD7, I'll try to address some of your problems...
-Check Nokia.com for accessories, they have the wireless chargers but no cases. T-Mobile has some cases and screen protectors ( I have the case/holster combo ).
-Battery life does suck, Nokia drive is to blame because it stays open and you have to manual block it in settings.
-I'm still using my HD7 for most of my games and apps, which leads to your other point about the storage, again, hopefully a software update allows you to store items to the card.
-I liked Zune, but I've been using WMP for years so that's what I use to transfer music and video.
The deal breaker would be the storage space on the phone for me, mainly because I don't wanna carry two phones.

Dr, thanks for the heads up. With the recent charging issues I'm running into, I will invest in a wireless charger for home and possibly work as well. My gripe with the accessories is that I've owned many a cellphone and have often gone the cheap route by getting good stuff on Amazon. There is NOTHING for the 810 right now...not even an extra battery. A real shame.
My biggest observation is that the WP7 apps are slowly getting WP8 support. Once that happens, and Nokia releases some battery tweaks, battery life will get much better. Maps, recordings stuff like that needs to go to the SD card.
The good thing is most of this stuff is software related and that's what's gotten MD excited about WP8's potential.

Yeah I just got wp8. I was quite surprised that backwards compatibility is an issue! About a third of my apps are unavailable for wp8 (I don't use many apps). Seems that there are small bugs, and the dev just removes the app from wp8 to save their ratings, and the smaller devs who don't have wp8 devices aren't updating with any haste.
Should be fixed with time, though.

Battery life I get 30 ish hours with use age. Not having to find apps to do things like scan barcodes song tag or do social networking. The office integration is great too. The email and document support is the best hands down. I love the way when i call a number through the search it comes up in the call log as the business name. The keyboard is amazing. Xbox integration is fun too controlling both my computer and my Xbox from my phone is awesome.
Some apps I use like group need updates. I honestly can't think of many thing I don't like....

I wish I could get 30 hours. I get about 16 hours. Maybe it was poor battery training in the being + running too many apps in the background, but that's where I'm at. I wish I could find a 810 battery, as even with the Focus S I carried around an extra battery (that phone has nice battery life too). Like you, I use my Galaxy Nexus now for gaming mostly.

Link, I think that's what were gonna expect for a while until more apps get the WP8 support. Plus if yours is a AT&T 820, that smaller battery + LTE speeds don't jive as well as the reps try to sell you. Great phones though...i wish my 810 had the 16GB internal like the 822 does...

They really need to add the option to turn LTE off.
But I wasn't using the phone from the point battery saver turned on- usually battery saver is good about that. HMMM. I purposefully got the 820 over the 920, I never looked into the battery size though. Maybe should invest into a spare.

I hope I translate everything correctly as my phone is german but in the Mobile Network Options my 920 has the possibility to set the maximum speed of the connectivity. If you switch that to 3G it will disable LTE and use the UMTS/HSPA network only. Perhaps this is disabled on AT&Ts devices but I would not see why.
Yes, AT&T is retarded, I do not have the option. And previous phones did not have the option to turn off 3G to use Edge (2G).

Stevie, you may not have been around for AT&T and WP7...there are still no official plans for them to update the HTC Titan 2, HTC Titan and Focus S to WP Tango. Unless 7.8 is OTA and not carrier handled as the other updates have been, they will be screwed the same way. So yes, I would not be surprised that the option to switch off LTE is not available on the AT&T version of the 820 and 920. Hell, people do cartwheels here in the US when you buy a carrier branded phone and they put a wired hands free in the box...

Alright, here's the situation. I recently set up my own desktop for gaming and that takes care of all my other activities too. I have a laptop (13" MBP) that I am contemplating doing away with in favor of portability and quite frankly I don't need all that power as the desktop makes it redundant. This has me thinking about getting a tablet to replace the lappy. Ideally I want something in the 10" range, 7" being too small. I want my tablet to be able to connect pen drives, keyboards (in case I need to create a document or two).
Dont hate me for this, but I have narrowed my choice down to the N10, iPad 3rd Gen and the Surface RT. Now I have heard complaints about how the N10 is stutter'y'. And I am not sure how good an investment an RT tablet is going to be. I would have liked to get the Surface Pro, but I cannot justify that price.
I would really appreciate inputs for any user (especially those who have had or still have an ipad and the N10). Maenwhile, I am trying to go through all the threads and see if I can get some info.
TIA
- don t buy the RT - waste of time and money. ( limited in every way )
-nexus 10 its ok but if you can wait .... wait for something better with android ( the closest compare with a laptop - yet )
you can attach easy a mouse with just an otg cable ... or a bt keyboard ...
- ipad 3 its ok also but only if you can agree with IOS ... not good for a desktop replacement .
- you can still take consider a 8 inch tablet . it s not so small as you think . ( this is really portable )
see the compare topic in general nexus 10 forum - ask there better

TIA

The n10 is a speed demon. It will be a while before apps are able to fully utilize the power that this SoC has. There really isn't any performance issues other than poorly optimized apps. If you do run into any problems as long as you are comfortable rooting and using custom ROM/Kernel combo then nothing is an issue.
Yeah, the RT seems to be a no go. Too bad, its a nice piece of kit (especially the touch cover).
From what I gather, the n10 seems to have its issues like choppiness and stutter because of
1. The insane number of pixels it needs to push and
2. Non optimized stock android
But yeah, an android tablet is my best bet for a laptop replacement.
For now, however, even though I am by no means averse to the entire idea of flashing roms (one reason why I never move away from android phones), i decided I needed something tried and tested. Got the 4th Gen iPad. I just hope google optimizes android on tablets, at least their own nexus line. It will also be fun to see what Apple does with their much anticipated iOS7.
Thanks for all your help guys :highfive:
Shame really because the Ipad won't connect to a BT mouse. Just a keyboard. The N10 isn't stuttery for what I am using it for - some apps may be, but there are always others.

Since I have a NX10 my laptop sits all the time alone in the corner. If needed, I just plug one receiver over OTG that is connect to mouse and keyboard plus a monitor over HDMI and voila, I dont need really a laptop anymore. Sitting all the day on the desktop at work makes using NX10 and home really relaxing...
My Nexus 10 doesn't have the choppiness or stuttering you keep referring to.
I'm on kaos rom with Franco kernel r10. Never had a better experience other than on KTmanta kernel.
If you know how to utilize an android tablet to its fullest you'll find that it replaces laptops better than ios or windows.
I have not used my laptop since the release of this tablet.
Any thread complaining about choppiness is more than likely due to using apps that aren't optimized for the Nexus 10. I tend to ignore threads that generalize the device since it ends up being user error due to them changing something or trying something new, etc.
Nexus 10 is still new and I'm sure there will be plenty of great improvements over the year.
Sent from my Nexus 10
this thread is gonna be about why i decided to buy nvidia shield.
but i'm not really a pro about this, so don't see this as a good info source
i'm actually not even sure if what i heard is correct, so if i'm wrong on anything, or know of a better choice, please do correct me
and thanks for reading
so i've been wanting a portable device since my last phone (droid incredible 2) sunk miserably into the washing machine
i don't really want a phone, because no one ever calls me (there are a lot of reasons i don't want a phone, this is just one of them)
so i turned onto tablets which brings me to the nexus 7 because it's in my budget of 300$
but there are a few minor things
i need a sd card slot, and a hdmi port, which both nexus 7 don't have
but since there aren't much portable (in which i mean less then 7 inches) devices that supports an hdmi port, i just decided to ignore that
which brings me to the nexus 4, which is a lot more portable which i like
and then i saw nvidia shield getting a price drop, which brings me to the topic, the nvidia shield
it's got a hdmi port, which i almost already gave up on, it also have a micro sd card slot which the nexus devices didn't have
it have a tegra 4 processor clocked at 1.9 ghz , which is better then the nexus 7, and even the nexus 4 which is at the same price point
it have 2gb of ram which nexus 7 only have one
and those are the reasons, which comes to the point that it's nothing about gaming
and that's why people are gonna think i'm dumb
so just to clear it up, i also have a gtx 660 oc which enables the pc streaming feature
and it also happens that i'm working on my own steam box, and got stuck at can't find a wireless controller for a pc
so those are all my reasons that i'm getting the nvidia shield, thanks for reading
again if i'm wrong about anything, please do correct me
also, this is my first time posting a thread, i tried my best to make sure everything is ok, but please do correct me too if i was wrong
your also welcome to discuss on the reply section
Actually sounds like you've done a bunch of homework on this already.
I can point out a few things about streaming...
1. It's possible to plug a wireless X-box 360 controller adapter into your PC and play from another nearby room via streaming, but the range isn't great. It also hits item #2.
2. Streaming quality - I've tried to find good streaming solutions in my home. I've got all the different "flavors" of Splashtop, I've tried different types of VNC and such. I'm going to be trying RemoteFX soon with RDP, but can't comment on that one yet. SHIELD has, so far, beat them all hands-down. The video quality is incredible compared to software like Splashtop. Latency is almost non-existent and I can play games like Monaco from my bed easily.
3. Wifi Bandwidth - You'll need a decent 5GHz wifi to really enjoy it. Unlike Splashtop, this takes up a lot of wifi bandwidth. But honestly, if you're going to stream over wifi, you might as well use some serious bandwidth for it. No point is having crappy quality just to have a bunch of unused wifi (at least in my opinion).
4. Comfort - Trying to play a game in bed or on the couch with a tablet and controller is uncomfortable to me. They're not really "built together" in a way that I find user friendly. I used to have an old Windows Tablet PC (before Apple even made a tablet and tried to claim first), and the problem with the keyboard for it was that you ended up with the screen on a "stand" and a keyboard. The keyboard was comfortable, but you couldn't use it in bed or anything because where were you going to put the screen stand?
Hope that give you more info about it, from my personal use cases on the devices.

Will it really be bad over 2.4GHz? I plan on upgrading soon but that's all I have right now. Does the quality suffer most or will it begin to lag first?
