Nook Owner thinking about buying SGT

I'm currently owning a Nook Color. I wanted it for reading books, reading pdfs (I can't find a lagfree Android pdf Reader!), browsing web and playing around.
I'm not happy with it. I'm from Germany, I payed about 300€ all in all for it with taxes and shipping costs.
I simply miss that I can't get any accessoires for it, that I don't have mobile Internet and the touchscreen makes problems.
I don't have a cellphone currently, I'm thinking about getting a case that let's me use my iPod as cellphone. But somehow I'd rather have a Samsung Galaxy Tablet, because I don't like it to have a device that wasn't ment to be an tablet and really is not a good tablet and together with the case for the iPod (70€) the SGT isn't a lot more expensive.
I think that I would still get about 200-250€ for my NC. I saw the Samsung Galaxy Tab for 350-400€on ebay.de.
What do you Samsung Galaxy Tab owners think, should I sell my NC to get a Samsung Galaxy Tab or should I stick with it?
PS: can one actually connect the tab to a TV with a video cable?

Well, I think you will get a lot more with the Galaxy Tab.
Overall I find it very usable and I enjoy it. Files in PDF can be read using Adobe reader and many others. I got Documents to Go and it gives me ability to read and edit MS format documents as well.
The Tab has everything that regular laptop has, plus GPS, compass, and cellular phone. You can get maps and navigation any time your need. GPS works better than on any phone because of the better antenna. Signal to noise ratio is more than 10 times higher. It should be noted that it supports Wifi at 5GHz in addition to 2.4GHz.
You can also make and receive phone calls while listening music through Bluetooth.
Overall Nook has a small fraction of the Tab's functionality.
Connecting the Tab to TV requires HDMI multimedia dock and HDMI cable with a small form factor connector on the dock side. You can also use Wifi streaming.
I would definitely vote for the Tab.

I use my galaxy tab in exactly the way you describe, I'm a postgrad student so I read ALOT of pdf files on my tab using Repligo to add comments to them and dropbox to sync with my desktop. I use Miren browser for 90% of my home web browsing and pulse reader for getting the news at Uni.
The tab is really stable on the modaco rom, but development isn't as fast as the NC, sometimes I wish there was more development, then I remind myself that functionality wise the tab has all the bases covered. When better kit comes along that the devs favour I will upgrade once the price falls. Until then the tab ticks all the boxes for me.
Edit: I'm waiting for an RCA cable to.arrive so that I can plug it into a T.V. via a scart adaptor.

The Tab is a good step up from the NC.
The rca cables are cool and allow me to stream movies and play games via the tab.
Protected movies like ones from the samsung movie site do not play through though

I am in the area too and wanted to get a T-Mobile one... And ended up paying a pretty penny.
To respond to thre OP--the size and hardware are its best attributes.
The software is a total nightmare. It is slow, no updates in sight, missed key presses ... I am annoyed. I am not even trying to do anything complicated with it! No rooting, no cooked roms, just stock device.
It's like they are pushing crap and once they sell the stock they move on to other versions.
Save your money. Samsung built this thing well but it is half-baked and the developent on it has just fizzled out on this site. I have very limited skills or I would be porting and helping.
Oh, the Nook Color thing. KEEP IT. It is much better quality and the development for it is still rockin. Hello, it has a Honeycomb port. The Tab is nowhere near that and again, devs have moved on it seems.

Thats what I like about the NC too.

I didn't look to bad to me.
I did all the rooting, overclocking stuff with my NC and it simply didnt make the device better.
Save your money. Samsung built this thing well but it is half-baked and the developent on it has just fizzled out on this site.

The more limited a device it the more devs & hackers are interested in it....

I also thought that that is a big plus. But it doesnt compensate for it lacking a lot of hardware. And the quality of it is definetely not better than the SGT. The case is creacky and I'm getting frequent qhost taps and times when the display isnt working at all.

Great a Honeycomb port, have you ever tried that port out? It's completely useless. I've been changing firmwares and kernels and all that stuff for the last 2 weeks and still ended up with froyo being the best.
I take my NC with me everywhere nearly, but it just has not enough functionality, and I'm thinking of leaving it simply at home to read books.

Personally, I am totally in love with my SGT. I have rooted and have overcome ROM 1.2.1 with the new overcome 2.0.1 kernel, and it is just awesome Although I liked it beforehand, and it was certainly well usable, the ROM/kernel made it a lot better.
I take mine absolutely everywhere, and it does everything for me.
Yeah, I have seen some of those Honeycomb ports, not the nook one but other SDK ports on other devices.... to be honest, personally, I would rather wait for the source to be released and a proper port to be done. These SDK "Ports" are just horrible. (Not trying to hijack at all, but really guys? You all really want a nearly totally non-functional port? First thing everyone will do is ***** that things don't work, but I digress)
In the meantime, my tab works Great I would definitely recommend one, especially if you like the portability a 7" device offers. From what I understand the screen is similar to, if not better than, the NC for book reading, and that is one thing my tab is used for a lot.
It is also my phone, portable media player (plays pretty much every format I've thrown at it, and plays 720p and 1080p stuff quite smooth, obviously scaled down for the screen res but still), portable Internet, and all round mate impresser

I don't think that there will be any affordable 7 inch tablet coming out this year (for me^^).
Also if they have better hardware and stuff like that - it would be simply like putting a porsche motor in a opel corsa (or some other car).
The companies try to make the customers believe that when one has a device with a better/great hardware, that one can automatically do more with it, or that it runs better.
With all the great tablet-apps that support dualcore processors that will definetely be the case this year. (sarcasm).
I can't think of a better 7'inch tablet for this prize (~350€)

At this time I can see only one future contender in the same 7inch category: HTC Flyer.
It promises scripting capability using bluetooth stylus that might be very useful.
I had a quite a few Palms and used scripting a lot. Also I had two HTC Android phones and built quality was very good.

the only thing that makes it better is that "magical" pen, but it's going to be 699$ and it's not out yet.

Actually i'd say that the fact that HTC have stated that it will get Honeycomb is more interesting than the "pen" IMO.

SGT will also get honeycomb, if not from samsung, then definetely from the devs or hackers.

I've got both and the tab is definatly a better choice.
@op by reading your remarks I can tell you are a pretty smary consumer. go with your inner voice and get the tab.
Unless ofcourse you just want to wait and see what coming but I doubt it will be much different in the near future.

Just went back to stock,
pdfviewing works great and fluent, I think stock is the best choice for standard consumer.
But still I'm quite sure that I'm going to buy the tab, it's going to last longer, or I think I will use it longer.
I looked at it at a local Shop,
put in my sdcard with apk's and pdfs, I was just messing around, trying out everything, the tab could even open my 350mb 250 pages fallout 3 game guide, nook takes for ever to load it.
It simply looked like the perfect all in one device that I was actually looking for, somehow got the Nook to try the tablet thing out, now it's time to upgrade my tablet.

I was bitter yesterday. Very bitter.
I wish I still had my Nook Color sometimes, but I am coming to realize exactly how much potential the Galaxy Tab really has.

[Q] Any drawback of A500?

Hi folks over A500 forum, i'm thinking to get myself an A500, but i afraid that i'll regret buying this tablet, because i've read some quite hmmm.... negative feedback about it.
some says that the charger wouldnt charge [i can assume that he has a faulty unit], poor mic, gps, unresponsive keyboard, weak wifi. So can anyone of you kindly enough to tell me what can i expect this tablet will be weak at?
I can tolerate at the poor camera quality though.

I have not found any issues at all with my tab. It is not an A500 but may as well be. (Gateway A60 running A500 roms). I use it at work and at home.
This tablet is pretty much perfect. The camera quality is fine as far as I am concerned (Front and rear), it is easily rootable, even if you install the OTA updates and the price point is where it needs to be.
The only thing that I have been on the lookout for is ICS but so far I am OK with HC. Way better than the Froto on my gtablet.

Go to the store and play with the Tablets... the gps is a issue.. mic is a issue (only with video chat)
you need to root to fix the gps issues the patch is in the dev section also to tether again patch here in the forum.

As already said by others, weak GPS, keyboard kinda sucks, glossy screen that really shows finger prints, etc. What I haven't seen mentioned, is the inability to properly play HD mkv's, most ppl will say you don't need high quality on tablet, and they are right, but, what if you want to hook your tab to a hotel TV to watch HD, etc. There also seems to be a lot of stuff in the market that is not compatible with this tab (specifically for me, mybuick and onstar)
That being said, having a usable USB port is pretty handy, the micro SD,(missing on the Zoom) micro HDMI are all nice to have. Microphone works well for apps like Skype as long as you use headphones.

You should be using headphones for video conversations anyway, otherwise the mic picks up the sounds coming from the speaker and then you have yourself a poorstorm of feedback.
I have never had any sort of keyboard issue with my tab. This is actually the first I heard of any sort of keyboard issue.
The rear camera is 5 megapixels, so expect 5 megapixel quality. Except for the newest Tegra3 tabs, this is the best camera you can get on a tablet.
You have to expect that this tablet comes from the first generation of real Android tablets that hi the market. As a result, you have to expect that there will be some issues with it. The good thing is that devs has created fixes for common problems (like GPS, wifi etc) so if you are someone who is in to rooting, this is a great tablet.

So true.. MY TAB WORKS Well as stated above.. But it does not come without some work... i have read forums of other tablets. we have less trouble then average..

Oh ok, thx for those feedbacks! BTW, have any of you suffer from keyboard delay? I played Transformer, G Tab10.1, and A500 at the store before, and fall in love with the port and weight of this tablet. But the thing that frustrated me is the keyboard delay it has[btw, i dont really know what happened on that tablet though]
And how was the wifi strength? I heard reports say that it drops quickly?

I love my a500 and should you learn to root and flash you'll uncover the real power and potential in the device. that being said it should be mentioned the a500 is old tech that is going to be replaced by newer more powerful models this year. as these models come out the cutting edge developers will migrate and Dec on the a500 will slow down somewhat. this does not mean the a500 isn't a good purchase option. its great hardware that with the right software is just amazing. but it is on the backside of its lifespan and that carries some downfalls that should be mentioned.

I've never had wifi dropouts, either at home or at work.
The public wifi at work is pretty bad but I have never had a problem logging on and its never dropped out.
Keyboard, again no issue here...
Haven't really played with GPS properly but do use co-pilot. I do find we seem to have pretty bad satellite reception here in OZ but when I have played around it seems pretty reliable, but again only done short trips...
Love the USB, this is why I bought the Acer A501 in the 1st place, no other tab had one. Expandable memory also a BIG plus...
I like the fact I can attach a 1Tb HDD and use this on my tab too...
No real problems, aside from the locked bootloaders Acer insists on sticking on its tabs, most things are fairly good.

I love my A500, but after taking it to meetings and with me pretty much all the time, I find it a bit heavy. I use it almost exclusively professionally and end up using dropbox more than USB drives. I would probably go with a GT10.1 because of the weight and thickness.

Picked up my A500 from The Source on a boxing day special price. It was a bit of an impulse, but also a bit of tech jealousy as my cousin had bought one the week before so he could learn to program apps for it and I got to play with it a bit on New Years. ANYWAYS. I loved it right away, and the prospect of rooting it was pretty awesome.
I have zero faults with this machine. It looks great, works great, was easily unlocked/rooted, and there is a ton of support on this forum. I just keep trying out new roms (4 diff. builds so far) and new kernels (on my 3rd one of those), and I'm having a lot of fun with it.
Only drawback is that I didn't buy one sooner.

picking one up today... 32GB for $220 I think its a fair deal...main reason i would even consider it is becuase its ICS upgradable
I also have a HP Touchpad with CM9 ICS... thats a great piece of equipment if your into modding as well!

I've gotten 5 days on standby with battery drain to 42% (busy week, it just sat on the bedside table for that time no usage). I figure it could have gotten to 10 days.
When I was using it as an e-reader running the Kindle app almost exclusively I was getting on average 3 days of use between charges, reading for about 3-4 hours a day (Game of Thrones books are LONG and addictive).
Right now I've been playing games on it and I can easily go a whole day (overclocked at 1504mhz) before having to charge it.
Standby had wifi turned on, but off when the screen was off. Reading I always had it in airplane mode, and playing games can be a mix between airplane and wifi. Actually it hasn't seemed to make a huge difference that I can see.

Some Observations

Positive:
- Fast, fluid, powerful.
- Multitasking is fantastic because of the additional RAM.
- The browser is as close to desktop performance as I've seen in an Android device
.- It's a new generation of tablet for Samsung, more like a giant SGS3 than an extension of the OG 10.1 or 10.1 2. I just updated my OG Tab 10.1 to ICS before I got the Note and the Note’s version of TW is far more modern with 3D effects on things like the keyboard.
- It has SGS3 features like Awake Stay, AllShare Play, AllShare Cast, BT4.0/aptX, and Buddy Photo.
- The new keyboard is much better laid out and has mini and thumb views. It also floats in mini-mode and has Swype-like capabilities. It’s actually quite usable now.
- The screen is incredibly responsive whether via finger or stylus navigation. Between that and the GPU/CPU speed and additional RAM it's almost an iPad like experience.
- The onboard speakers sound fantastic for a mobile device.
- Video performance is the best I've seen on an Android device.
- It's well built and feels very premium.
Neutral:
- It's not going to win any beauty contests but it's growing on me.
- Samsung's apps and widgets aren't terribly impressive aesthetically. Why does Samsung fell the need to make everything look so cartoonish?
Negative:
- Social Hub has been removed which really doesn't make any sense. I checked the Luxembourg and Netherlands ROMs and its missing from them too. My 3G Note has a TTT (Trinidad) CSC. Some other leisure stuff has been left out too like AP Mobile.
- The S-Pen's in a stupid place. If the Note's in a case or sitting on a stand you can't reach it. Based on the real estate that's probably the only place they could put it. It also feels a little cheap.
- Auto-brightness is way too low; probably to save battery.
- It can't read SDXC memory cards. I had to go through a ton of gymnastics to get it to recognize my SanDisk 64GB card and it's now running FAT. It's a shame Samsung didn't implement exFAT the way they did on the SGS3.
- It’s a shame it doesn’t have an HD display.
I'll post more as I use it for different things.

Light Bleed, especially on boot up?
BlueTooth and wireless - are there any issues with using BT while on wifi?
Are you using the Chrome browser?
Have you tried any games, or netflix. Netflix from what I am hearing is poor on the T700, and games had stuttering issues before our last update.

Ugh... the lack of exFAT is almost a dealbreaker!! Now I have to really think about if this is worth getting or not (have a Note N7000 right now and really miss having big files on my 64Gb card).

With general usage, how is the performance compared to other Android tablets or iPad?
How good are stock apps like S-Note or the Adobe PS?

I have a question about multitasking. Is it possible to have floating windows? Are there limitations on what can multitask? For instance, I'm interested to float a video or photo, while having Sketchbook Pro or some other drawing app open to draw on. Is that possible?

None. Samsung's QC on their tablet displays is pretty impressive. The only display complaint was with early versions of the OG 10.1 which would get a moisture circle between the glass and panel from humidity. That was more a design issue than a QC issue. The resolution's the same as the OG 10.1 but looking at them side-by-side the panel itself is definately different. It seems a lot sharper; especially with text.

That's an Asus "feature." I've never had that issue on any other brand of Android device I've owned.

Stock. If you use a third party browser you lose multi-view.
Have you tried any games, or netflix. Netflix from what I am hearing is poor on the T700, and games had stuttering issues before our last update.

No games yet. Netflix plays great. So does Amazon Instant (via the browser), HBO GO, Xfinity Player, YouTube HD, and Vevo.

No, side-by-side only with each app fixed at half the display. Videos in Pop Up Play float and can be moved and resized. Pop Up Play only works with the stock video player.

Ok, I have it since Friday last week and also have a normal 10.1 and can confirm some views but let me add/question others:
First some great differences from normal 10.1:
+ SD card slot (I did not have one before... How did you get 64gb working? I did not so far
+ Infrared port (you can use it as a remote controller for your TV
+ Whatever have been sayd on speed/memory above
+ Some nice configurable enhancement on lockscreen
+ A special menu (or direct app) appears when you pull out the pen
+ You can define the level of auto brightness now! (therefore it's not too dark, just pull the slider and the auto brignes will be affected as well to a higher level )
+ No Social hub (I always reoved this with Titanium because I don't use any of the Samsung hubs)
- The price was heavy (OK, I wanted to get it as one of the first and did not want to wait until I get 20% discount)
- Why not a higher resolution screen?
- The 64GB SD topic
I did not have too much time to test a lot or to install/play a lot of games (use it more for business). Run only Quadrant Pro once and the result was ~6150, about twice than on my 10.1.
Ok, I hope I helped some more with my additional view!

I would like to point a thing about the screen resolution. Exynos 4412 doesn't support Full HD. It supports max WXGA resolution.

Did you get a 3G version? The 16GB Note was less than I paid for my 3G 32GB UK G-Tab 10.1. And at least I can use the Note as a phone for conference calls and spare the battery on my phone.

Yes, I bought the 3G and I 4got to mention one other big +
+ !!!! You can use it as a phone, it comes with dialer and works as normal phone like the 7 Tab!!!! Of course, use the earphones if you don't want to use the standard speakerphone setup
+ Another +, it's data speed is much higher than any of my other tablets or my normal Galaxy Note N7000! I get full WIFI speed now (22MB, have DSL with 24MB max...) and 8MB+ on H+. Before I had with Tab 10.1 and Note only around 8MB on Wifi and 3-4MB on H+

I've had one since Friday. Purchased from Negri. It is awesome. The writing is SO fluid - NO lag.
I got my 64 GB card to work by formatting it in my 5" Note. It wouldn't recognize it before but after format in the small Note it recognizes it as 64 GB.
I cannot get BeyondPod to move it's directory to this external card. Does anyone know the path I need to tell BeyondPod to use?

i gotta say their demo looks like everything i had hoped ms to come out with. i'm playing with the asus infinity right now but starting to come across the regular QC defects that asus works so hard to maintain.
it's a hard decision -
asus- decent hardware with great aftermarket support
samsung - great quality hardware with sub-par aftermarket support (just getting ics after the JB ships??? tablet support is on different than their phones).
my 1 yr old gt 10.1 has no light bleed, no clicks or creaks and works just as good as day one.
my tf infinity is 4 days old and the bleed has progressively gotten worse and the click on the right side is getting a bit louder. i like it, but i'd hate to have it fall apart on me.

I've had mine for about a week now, and I'm in love with this device. It's by far the best, most responsive Android tablet I've used - and I've used a lot. My GTab 7.7 feels like a juddery mess compared to this thing. I find it very nice to hold, very light, the speakers are fantastic - and FRONT facing (why is this so hard for manufacturers/designers to understand we want them on the front??), battery life is excellent, and the screen, OK it's not HD (and a bit jarring coming from an iPad 3) is still plenty nice, bright and clear.
It's my favourite tablet, possibly ever.
That being said - I've had a few software issues with it.
1) Most serious, but only happened once so far: I brought up the pop-up S Memo from the bottom taskbar, then clicked the fullscreen button to expand to the full S Note application. S Note completely froze, then crashed. Upon relaunch, half of my notes, along with half the demo/tutorial notes were completely missing from the app. NOT good. After messing around with ways to get it back, I discovered through the file browser that all the note files were actually still there. I went into the Application manager in android settings and did a "Clear Data" for S Note. This solved the problem. Upon relaunch, all the notes were back in S Note.
2) In S Planner, there is NO option to create a NEW note in S Note to attach to a task. There is only an option to link an existing note. The original GNote has the option to create a new note.
3) Also in S Planner, one time I selected the option to link a task to a note in S Note, and S Note opened but then completely froze. Force killing S Note did not help. I tried multiple times, and had to restart the whole tablet to be able to use S Note at all.
4) I've been using an Apple (no hissing, please) bluetooth keyboard with the Gnote 10.1. Works fantastic (see, Apple and Samsung really CAN get along ) but I turned the bluetooth off one time to save battery when not using the keyboard. A while later, I tried to turn bluetooth on again. Bluetooth would not turn on. I could not toggle it on or off. I restarted the tablet, and bluetooth came on automatically.
These issues are very annoying, but so far have all happened only once. Hopefully will not be recurring issues, as I plan to make extensive use of S Note and a bluetooth keyboard too.
Other than that, I just LOVE this tablet. Bye bye, iPad 3!

The phone is cool. I would imagine you could easily do hands-free (haven't actually tried it), but the speakers are certainly loud enough for most situations.
BTW, i've never seen a phone this large. I imagine there have been a few, but perhaps not. Anyone?

My Review of the Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition)

I purchased the Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) from amazon two weeks ago with overnight shipping. I received it the next day and was impressed by the build quality, except, the right side speaker is slightly loose. I did not notice it was loose until I read another post here saying they had a loose speaker and many others started to find out that theirs was too. Other than that, everyone was perfectly constructed.
When I turned it on for the first time everything was fast and fluid, even with Samsung's TouchWiz and all the other bloaty widgets and apps they come with. I have to say, Samsung can really make a polished piece of hardware, but that is where they should stop, unless they are going to invest a much larger amount of energy in to developing their software platforms. I have the Galaxy S4 as my phone, and now the Galaxy Note 10.1 Tablet, and I always love everything about the Samsung products except for almost 100% of the software they develop... but I will get in to that a little later.
One of the big reasons that I chose this over other Samsung tablets to be my first tablet since I got an Archos Internet Tablet (in 2008 or 9 ), well besides the obviously beastly processor and RAM, was because it had the physical button on the frame and a software digital button. I know a lot of users here and elsewhere hate the physical button, but I don't understand why when you are just wasting space on your screen when the frame of your device would have been actual wasted space without the button. I've used the Galaxy Tab 2 10inch and one of my biggest annoyances was the on-screen buttons because I use the app Splashtop to remotely control my PC, and those damn software navigation buttons always got in the way.
Anyways, on to other things, this thing is fast and powerful. 20-25 apps running in the background and no slow down of any noticeable amount. After a few days though, TouchWiz started lagging tremendously whether there were any apps running or not. Now I've replaced the stock TouchWiz with Nova Launcher Prime, and the Lock Screen with WidgetLocker, and never have I seen any lag on this device since. Plays large, HD quality games like FIFA 14 perfectly.
The S-Pen is actually really cool and I'm a fanatic about productivity and some of the features related to the S-Pen are really great when trying to be productive. It has a feature that lets you scrap book any video, image, text, area of the screen, etc. that I use often to research certain topics and bring them together. Action memo allows me to write down an address that someone is telling me over the phone, then circle it with S-Pen and it will pull up gMaps to direct me there automatically. It was a little strange getting used to writing on a tablet though but now it feels as fluid as if I were writing with a real pen.
I have to say something about the graphical quality of the screen though. It is beautiful, and I have not seen a better quality screen for such a device ever before. The resolution is higher than my Desktop PCs and it definitely shows. It is definitely better than even the iPad Air that I went to check out a couple days ago. Apparently this factor alone is the reason that this Dual-Quad-Core tablet requires that much processor, but that's fine with me.
The Note came with a host of perks such as a $25 Google Play gift card, a $50 Samsung Hub credit, Hulu+, Newsweek, premium "wifi hotspot" membership for 18 months and more that I won't every use. This brings me back to my biggest downfall with Samsung though. They give me $50 to spend on the Samsung Hub (Their version of the Play Store) and when I go there, everything is either junk, already pre-installed on my device, or just something I'm not interested in. I really wanted to use the Samsung Credit to buy some Tech E-Books through their book store and use the Play Store credit for apps/games, but their store only has about 25 tech-related books! So when I decide I won't be buying any books there and try to get some apps and games, half of the decent games worth buying take me directly to the Play Store instead. I feel like I may have this Samsung Credit for a while..
But getting less free stuff than I wanted is not going to detract even 1 star from this bad ass hog. Overall the thing is more powerful than any tablet in its price range, has the highest quality video capabilities, comes with a unique S-Pen that other tablets just don't have, and is a Droid!
:good: 4.5/5 is what my rating would have to be, because they have created a great tablet, and could have got a full 5/5 if they just polished and worked on their software platforms until completion.

.I'm using my note for 1 week now...
I've got the 16g wi fi version.
I ve got the 16 bec ause that was the only one available at the store and since there wo n't be any model available in my country soon and I was travelling in the US I, ve decided to buy this on with a 32g sd card.
So far everything is fine, stock configuration and beginning to do some customizations.
My previous tablet was the asus tf300 wich was stolen.
My first concearn was about the 16g of storage....Yes it's small but since I'm moving all available apps and files to sd card everything is working ok. Can't notice any difference between sd or internal apps running.
The s pen is awesome. the kind of thing that you just know you need it only after you get it. Much easier and accurate navigation through the tablet with it.
The multi screen function is also awesome. no need to exit one browser to see other one again....
The only thing that bothers me , and that's not a only Samsung fault, is the amout of pre installed apps.
I was waiting for the tf701 and the new nexus 10.....wich won't be available here either. ... Since both weren't available I've decided for the Samsung.
I'm a regular user, the main use is for reading aircraft manuals and articles and using some life easing and time saving apps...and so far I'm happy with my choice.the tablet is doing its job.
I read lots of reviews and comparisons and my conclusion is that when premium tablet is the concearn. ..regular every day users like me , any pick is a good pick.....Is pretty much like buying a premium sports car.... some will prefer Ferrari some lamborgini and others Porches but either one will be a great choice.

That's a point where I'm not very satisfied. I think that me battery drains faster than it shoud. I use the device basically with wi fi on all the time right now my battery is low but latter after charging I'll reply with time time availability shown with 100%.

I think the battery is one of the few areas of honest disappointment. I don't like Android devices that make you do a lot of discovery to find battery drain culprits, or hold a charge quite as well as you'd expect. That's one area where I blame the TouchWiz skin on this tablet.
You were right to highlight the screen, it's absolutely phenomenal. It's far better than my Nexus 10 which was something. It outclasses my iPad as well, it's not just clear it has beautiful color reproduction. It's a bit heavier than I expected after reviews, and my home button is sticky. Besides that it's well made.
It's funny though, I can't say without a doubt I'd recommend it to people if it weren't for the S-Pen usage. The SPen on this is incredible, it works better than you'd think if you have no experience with it. No lag, good software tied in with it, it's the real deal as far as having a virtual notebook. That's why I bought it and why I love it so far. Take that away and the TouchWiz skin seems so unnecessary in so many ways. As someone who uses a Note 3 everyday, this clearly isn't as fast or slick, but it has the real estate. Interesting device.

I don't have an precise answer for that but I followed some of the advices from the battery saving thread and the battery is actually lasting longer.

I have had mine for only a couple of days, and it's great except for the battery life. I also followed the advise on the battery saving thread, and seems to help.

Battery life about 10 hours medium usage with full-brightness. I drain the battery pretty quick though playing games on it and watching hulu..
I feel like my friends older Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 gets better battery life, but then again he always has the brightness to a minimum. I always max the brightness because its just too good looking.
By the way another thing I love about this tablet vs the Galaxy Tabs is that it uses the standard android MicroUSB charger instead of a fat proprietary looking one that doesn't charge any of my other devices.

opinions about the Tegra Note 7

I am looking to get some cheap tablet for my daughter, something that I can use as well (not a cheap Chinese tablet). I had nexus 7 2012 which is now broken so looking for an alternative.
I am interested to get one but I see that it is not famous even the forum is almost empty. Can someone tell me why. I see the specs and price are excellent.
I want to hear opinions from owners of this tab before getting it. what do/don't you like about this tab? before either getting this or nexus 7 2013.
what I like about this over the nexus is the speakers and the styles, they will be useful for me and my daughter (to listen to songs and draw things). but the nexus has more RAM and better support. I don't care about the camera (I have Z1 SGS4 and pro camera) or the resolution as long as the quality of the screen is good, my old nexus 7 screen is good enough.
what do you guys think? get it, get the nexus or do you have any other suggestion?

My problem with 1G RAM is not with opening apps or multitasking. But I am worried that the support for this tab will be dropped very soon because it won't have enough RAM. Most Manufacturers dropped support for device with 0.5 RAM and some even dropped support for devices with 1G RAM. I know that 4.4 tried to solve this issue but I still think that 1 G RAM isn't much and Tegra won't support this tab for long and will drop support after 4.4. What make this problem even more serious is that there is no much support for this tab from the community itself and not many ROMs available that could support this tab if nevidia gone this way. Any opinions?

Well, i think you gotta ask yourself a few questions if you consider buying the TN7.
1. How important is the screen? It's just like all the tests say, the screen ist not SO good. It's ok, i think the resolution is enough, and i am happy with the colors - its not like everything is blue or something. But it is just "ok" and could be better. (for example in the N7'13) (this might be interesting if your daughter wants to read alot)
2. Do you need the stylus? This was the #1 reason for me to get a TN7, and i love it. Good for drawing and writing, but also just for everyday use. I never touch the screen with my finger =)
3. Does your daughter need skype or something? The front camera is VERY bad, and not usable for anything. (640x480 i think, just VGA)
4. The speakers are superawesome. Loud, clear and in generel very good, it's fun to watch videos and movies.
So, in my opinion you should go for the TN7. Guess custom rom support and stuff is not important for your daughter, and for entertainment, drawing and stuff it's very good.
ps: the resolution is more then enough to read, the kindle 4 for exampe just got 800xsomething. but 1080 is better of course

I don't own one (yet) but if you're looking for a reason to get this over the Nexus 7... aside from the far superior processor (perhaps you won't notice if you don't play games) the HDMI Out is a good one. The Tegra Note's screen lower screen resolution won't make a difference when you're viewing on a HD TV.

The underlying software (I'm told by youtube videos) is about identical to the one the Shield uses (the Nvidia Marketplace looks different). These same videos sounded confident that the updates would come along with the Shield updates. Even though it's only 1 GB, the processor is top of the line (for any price range). So I really hope Nvidia doesn't burn us.

I have the tegra note 7 (x3), nexus 7 2013, Nexus7 2012 (×2 but sold one and may sell the other one).
Been using the tegra note 7 mostly since I got it a while back in Dec 13. Reasonably happy with purchase enough to sell one of my nexus 7 2012 and may sell the other too.
Screen is about the same as nexus 7 2012. Speakers are great much better than nexus 7 2012 and Nexus7 2013 or my note 3 or s4. Back camera is Ok, hdr Mode is cool. Front camera is **** and Can't believe Nvidia even dreamt of putting such a lousy one. Haven't skyped with it but expect it to be lousy after brief testing the camera. Low light performance is obviously poor from both front and back cameras.
Pen is good and accurate and faster response than my note 1 phone or note 3. But pen apps are not as much as for note series.
Have two slide covers. Might be getting the extra Pens set from Newegg. Got the slide covers from pc world / currys UK like the tablet (£89.99 then using a code) . Plus usual other android accessories.
Hdmi micro output is useful. But all ports including hdmi usb have too much jiggling about of cable even after it is in so if device is not lying still then will lose connection. Pet adapter cable is SHORT.
Miracast Wireless screen mirroring works great. You can see my YouTube video from a month ago if interested in my tag line below. Will try to upload some more tegra note 7 videos this Weekend if I get the time.
1gb ram has been Ok in my experience surprisingly. Should get better with Kitkat.
Some gameloft games Eg newer haves work only with controllers and not even due to gameloft coding issue and older gameloft games work fine. Game controllers work fine.
Screen not an issue For browsing, movies, games, satnav.
Satnav works great with several mapping applications. Satellite lock faster with Google navigation than others irritatingly but once locked no issues later. Works great for hours of driving.
Will update more in my video review after using all these tablets for a while now (if I get the time this weekend). Thought of doing a quick review earlier but decided to use it for a while before making one. Been using mine for more than a month now.

I just have one question since you have both the note 7 and nexus 7 (2012). Can you tell me whats better in the note 7 and whats better in the nexus 2012 as I had nexus 7 2012 and was a great device, I just want quick comparison in few lines if you don't mind.

-Front facing camera is very low resolution, like 640x480. I don't video chat much and even when I do I don't really care about these things, I'd actually prefer not to be in ULTRA HD while I've been lounging around the house unshaven. But still, 640x480 is quite low for a newer device, even if it is $199.
-Short USB cable. I really hate when OEMs get stingy over an extra 2-3 feet of cable.
-IPS displays illuminate blacks and sometimes have bad 'backlight bleeding' on the sides. I would have paid an extra hundred dollars for a display with better color balance than what IPS offers. The screen gets bright, and has good viewing angles/color balance for an IPS display, but at the end of the day it's still IPS. It fits the price of the tablet.
What can be seen as cons:
1280x800 resolution
I do not feel 220ppi is bad in any way shape or form. I can not see pixels even when I move it about 5 inches away from my face. The resolution works great on 7 inch tablets and reduces the strain on the GPU. This translates into higher FPS and a lighter GPU load, leaving a lot of computational power for the tablet to tap into when needed.
1 GB RAM
While I would prefer 2GB, I have grown used to 1GB. Here's a big misconception people make "More RAM is better". More RAM means more power draw, having high amounts of RAM can drop battery life. The way android handles RAM is to kill old processes when more memory is needed, this has worked for years with lower amounts of RAM because it means your most recent processes will always run at a higher priority.
The drawback to this, is that with resource-intensive applications open like games, you can lose old processes from days ago from memory. But I would argue that this is a good memory management scheme because it gets rid of apps you leave open for ages and forget to close, and gives more memory to your game so it doesn't lag. Now with more memory that old application would be around longer, sitting in memory, eating up energy until you close it, run out of memory, or open it again.
At the same time, some newer devices NEED more RAM. This is due to having a high resolution, on a 720p screen your UI elements may be 64x64, well on higher resolutions it goes up to 72x72, 96x96, 128x128, etc. This means that higher resolutions have higher memory requirements because their resources are larger. With a tablet like the tegra note 7, 1GB is okay for 720p resources. With a tablet like the 2013 nexus 7, it is not.
Other Thoughts
I am left handed and really love that Nvidia didn't forget about us lefties. The draw app included with the tablet has leftie optimization. I also love the placement of all the connectors, they are all on one side of the tablet. The settings app has a CPU menu where you can change from quad core mode to dual core mode and I liked that. I would have preferred to have the front facing camera in a closer location to the rear camera, so it doesn't get covered in landscape as easily.
But really, for $200?! It beats everything on the market right now, including the 2013 nexus 7. For any tablet that has a feature that edges out on the Tegra Note 7, the tegra note 7 has about 4-5 tricks the other tablets don't. I cannot complain at all for what I paid, this device will be fast for years to come once the AOSP builds come.

Looks like others have covered many points I agree with already.
Basically almost everything is better on the tegra note 7 than nexus 7 2012. Screen is debatable though.
Tegra note 7 is better ..... cpu, gpu, speakers, sd slot, pen, miracast, hdmi, back camera, Slide cover accessory.
Nexus 7 2012 is better. ... Faster software updates better grip while holding in one hand, front facing camera is better quality, battery life better than tegra note 7, can get 32gb internal storage unlike the tegra note 7, more accessories available.
Some other things.... Nexus 7 2012 although does not have miracast but can cast some apps to miracast receivers. Nexus7 2012 too has usb OTG support when used with nexus media importer app. The loud speakers on the tegra note 7 make it better as a sat nav in my experience.
Some things I don't like. ....
On the tegra note 7. .... random screen switches on. Ports have too much looseness Eg need to keep usb cable still add If you move Tablet then easily gets dislodged. Sane problem with hdmi. Both ports too close together and some cables might not fit together but other cables will fit.
On the Nexus7 2012. .. starts lagging like hell when full unlike the tegra note 7.
This is as short as I can get it.
If your want shorter then. ... Just buy the tegra note 7
Can't wait to ditch samsung note 3 to get a full specked tegra note phone if and when launched with premium features.

Everyone in here needs to realize something, there has to be a profit margin in ANY device sold. How much do you think it cost for just the bare Tegra 4 chip? I would guess $75-$100 OEM for just the chip itself and then you have roughly $99 more to build EVERYTHING else. I honestly only have 2 complaints with the TN7, 1GB of RAM and the Screen. For the cost though, I can't really say they are complaints, more just something I could point at as a short fall if asked to name some. Everything else is awesome, from sound to Tegra 4 speed.

I ordered mine and should be receiving it tomorrow. I noticed that the main issue is with both cameras which isn't important for me. What worries me is that most people aren't very happy with the screen but I guess I will have to wait and see myself. I am happy to see that the speaker and the styles are of very good quality.
I got mine from PCWORLD for 129.99£ I wish I knew about the 89.99 offer, I would have got two , anyway it is still a bargain.

I got my first Tegra Note from Aliexpress as soon as they were released, a Chinese Homecare model, the same company that manufactures all the version I hear. The problem was the tablet I got seemed to be poorly made. On day 0 I couldn't get the usb cable in. I realised most of my sockets were unaligned to the plastic case. Then there was missing Google Apps and the GPS didn't work so I needed to root and go into repair mode. After bending the USB connector up a little I could power and start work at making this tablet usable. Well within a few days I had a software bricked unit and the repair mechanisms like recovery and bootloader partitions were so limited on this model that I couldn't remedy. The moral to the story is buy local if you can.
I now have an EVGA Tegra Note and it's far better experience. The manufacturing is better and everything works bar the GPS which may come down to the satellite table being narrow.
Buyers should consider that Nvidia's Tegra Tablets are a new series using one of the fastest CPU cores around so if you want to be apart of this new cruise get onboard. It's only going to get better.

gps is non functional on this tablet, takes over half an hour to aquire a lock and looses it in 30 seconds.

Gps works fine on mine but slightly slower with new updates. Lock was faster before. Lock is faster with Google Navigation than other apps. Mine work fine in the UK for online and off line navigation using various sat nav apps for hours of driving to unfamiliar cities. Once locked have never lost a signal since I bought in December. I have compared it with Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and nexus 7 2013 and For long journeys now mainly use tegra note 7 due to Good speakers. For short journeys I use my note 3.
Lock time is Ok with updates but was faster before. Only on 3 occasions lock took a while but rebooting device sorted it out.
Battery life is better with nexus 7 2013 and 2012 during navigation though than the tegra note 7.

Ok, I bought the Tegra and have had time to play around with it.
The USB cable it comes with fits loosely into the port. Other cables I've tried fit much better however.
The casing makes noise when I'm holding it. If my thumb is on one of the front facing speakers, iI can feel it compress slightly and its accompanied by a clicking sound. As I walk my fingers around the edge of the tablet and press down gently, I hear a slight clicking. I worry that the screen is going to come out of the plastic shell. And for this reason, I will not root this device until the warranty has expired. I should probably review the warranty sooner rather than later because I'm not sure of the details.
Overall I'm very happy with the purchase and performance of tthis tablet but I will update this post if needed.

Freeze!
I recently bought this tablet but was disappointed to find out that it froze quite often and had to be rebooted after every 15-20 minutes. The problem continues to persist even after upgrading to Android 4.3. Please help!

Freezing is an issue if apps are moved to sd card improperly. This causes freezing and reboot loops and low battery in my samsung devices. Have you moved apps to sd card. If so then remove sd card and see if problems resolved. If it is Ok without sd card then start deleting the apps one by one when in your tablet. If it crashes too often the insert the card into your laptop and delete the hidden Android folder which should sort the problem if it was due to improper moving of app to sd card

Thanks for the speedy reply. But I haven't even yet installed an sd card.. All I have done is install apps from playstore to the tablet's inbuilt memory.

Have you tried a factory reset. Did it sort the problem out. After factory reset install apps one by one and wait 15 to 20 mins to see if any of the apps wad causing the issue. Can't think of anything else to suggest. If problem continues then I would get an exchange or refund if I were you.

By any chance, could there be some problem with the hardware which is causing such freezes?
