Hi everyone,
I'm not sure since when this has been happening, but my A1 (latest OEM updates installed) doesn't want to connect to 5 GHz WiFis when they use a channel starting from 116, as it seems.
This is very annoying because on dual-band WiFi routers, when it tries to switch from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz (especially when both use the same SSID), it can't connect and drops the connection completely. This happens every few minutes.
For my own WiFi networks, I can work around by manually setting a channel < 116 or setting different SSIDs for both frequencies. But on WiFi networks that I don't control, I don't know what to do.
Any ideas? Does anyone have the same problem? Was it caused by a recent update? Is there a way to disable 5 GHz WiFi support on the phone itself?
Thanks for any input.
I am affected also by this problem.
I did like you on my router but can't do the same for the office.
As far as i know the solution is to roll back to oreo.
I am not sure if CyanogenMod helps on that point, if it is i will for sure flash my phone.

Wifi channels >116 works on Oreo. It looks like Pie messed wifi in several ways.
Rolling back to Oreo is more difficult because of ARB (or something else with Pie) but it can be done.

Thanks for the info. I've been thinking: Could it be related to country-specific regulations? Not all channels can be legally used in all countries. Maybe the phone thinks that it is located in such a country. Logcat doesn't give me any useful info unfortunately.

You're right it could, its not allowed in US, Russia, Australia according to wikipedia. I'm on Oreo so I don't know if its a Pie or region thing for sure.
No idea if the wiki is correct/updated:

Maybe have a look at this article:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/0...uble-connecting-to-5-ghz-wi-fi-access-points/
I haven't had a connection problem per se at 2.4 or 5 ghz BUT I was unable to see my own 5 ghz network until I changed the SSID name to remove spaces. SOMETIMES the G2 could see it but most times it could not until I renamed "Network 5Ghz" to "Network_5Ghz", and then I could see it and connect. If your network has no spaces then I guess that idea is out.
Did a full image wipe/install with the official 5.0. I'm no-longer able to connect to my Netgear r6800v2 router with the same channel 48 setting for 5Ghz that previously worked on android 4.4.4.
Any other folks out there with android 5.0 problems using 5Ghz channel?
EDIT: I should add - I'm fully aware the N10 has limited 5Ghz frequencies it works on (e.g. 40, 44, 48) - I've tried 36, 40, 44, and 48... none of these seem to work in android 5.0 with the same router settings. It can see the broadcast and attempts to connect, but IP address is never acquired (DHCP)
I'm having the same issue and my 2.4 network is very slow. Anyone else have this issue or any idea how to fix it.
Yeah I've had issues with 5ghz on every lollipop device I have. Haven't figured out how to fix it yet
I had the same issue and changing to Channel 44 (with Auto bandwidth = 40 mhz) solved it for me, it was on 36 initially
No problems here, did a clean flash of Lollipop and 5GHz is working fine with my RT-AC68U, channel 36, auto bandwidth.
Same problem here. Changed to channel 44 and is at least working
Wiped. Clean flash. No problems. On channel 157. Wish it would tell me if im 300mbit or not. Ac n66u.
Installed from a sideloaded OTA.
Have issues connecting to my Virgin Superhub 2 both on 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz.. Channel 8 and 36 i believe.

Go into Settings -> Wifi then tap the connected wifi network. It will tell you your link speed there. Mine is connected at 300mb/s, while in powersaver mode it drops to 24mb/s.

Mine only connects at 24Mbps and its not in powersave mode
I've similar issue, but both on 5ghz and 2.4ghz.
The connection isn't stable and I get disconnected all the time after upgrading to lollipop. If I'm tethering with my phone right next to the tablet (on 5ghz) it works perfectly. I'm not sure if they've tweaked the disconnect/reconnect threshold base on signal strength.
I'm having problems with 2.4 Ghz wifi too. In Jelly Bean I have a pretty good coverage with my home router but with Lollipop I get lots of disconnections and slow speed. I'm not sure if it's a drivers problem or an operative system change, but I know for sure that it's a pain in the ass.
I'm having the same problem with 2.4 Ghz.
Both 5 and 2.4 are much worse for me as well compared to kk.

I've solved my Wi-Fi speed problems changing one setting in my router: just disable WMM ( Wifi MultiMedia).
Try to enable/disable that setting (can be shown also as WME instead of WMM).
Good luck!

My 2.4g is working perfectly, but it cannot see my neighbours 5g network. My Note 2 sees it fine. I checked with Wifi analyzer app.
I can connect to my BT home hub 5 but it only works for a free minutes and then it kind of freezes.
I'm still connected according to my tablet with good signal strength but there is no internet activity making the tablet pretty much a big paper weight for me at the moment.
If some one can help me fix this issue id be very grateful

Connecting just fine at 5GHz 300Mbps with 5.0. I have tested 2.4GHz as well and both function just fine.
I do connect easly, but connection quality is poor... There is definitely something wrong with Wi-Fi on lollipop
tapped from NEX
The Nexus Player has one of the oddest bugs when it comes to connectivity. In its' current state it will NOT recognize three digit channels on the 5Ghz band. The upshot of this is:
it might appear to connect, but then drop to 2.4Ghz sporadically before reconnecting @ 5Ghz. This will happen when you have your router channel set to "automatic". Sooner or later it will automatically choose a higher channel (100+) and therefore become invisible to the Nexus player.
in order to see the 5Ghz band from the NP, you need to set your router to fixed channel for 5Ghz on a 2-digit channel (40 in my case). Believe me, it works just fine then...
We'd prefer automatic channel selection in the router obviously, but at least the mystery is solved.
sidenote: as of writing, Android M still also has this issue. It's not a lollipop thing.
sidenote 2: 2.4Ghz is unaffected by any of this
Thanks! You solved my problem
It's the DFS and radar channels on the 5 GHz band which the Nexus Player does not connect to. Channels 149 through 161 do work with this device, however.

Ah, someone got to the bottom of this ! Having talked to Google support (hugely keen to help, but it was an unknown bug to them at that point) it was just surprising that it wasn't even acknowledged as an issue before.
Then again, I must confess all this DFS/radar channel commercial etc stuff is alien to me (and should be irrelevant to consumers)
The DFS / radar stuff is explained in the Q&A at http://superuser.com/questions/692835/which-5ghz-channel-to-use.
Just for completeness' sake: As already mentioned in another tread, this has been fixed permanently with the Marshmallow update and the Nexus Player can now connect to the 5GHz DFS channels perfectly.
At least I haven't had any problems at all in that department after the update. Even those random disconnects that I got on the non-DFS channels are gone now and the Nexus Player stays connected all of the time. This is what I've been hoping for and I'm glad to see that Google seems to have fixed all Wi-Fi issues within this device (I wasn't too optimistic to be honest).
Might be that somebody else could still be facing issues, but mine have all been fixed with 6.0.

It doesn't appear to be working well for me at all on 5ghz. I am on marshmellow. I first figured out I had WiFi problem when I tried to stream games with moonlight and they would lag and give poor connection pop-up all the time.
I then dled a WiFi speed app and it shows its not working properly. On auto, which defaulted to channel 149, I got around 50Mbits/s down 200Mbits/s up. I then saw this thread hoping it would fixing muy problem, so I switched to channel 40 and now I'm getting 20Mbits/s down 200 Mbits/s up. Everyone other device in my house is getting above 200Mbits/s down.
I'll try playing with some more channels. I'd appreciate some suggestions if you have any.
I really don't get it. It's saying my link speed is higher than 500mbits/s.
I'm getting double the amount of downstream: 98mbit/s (that is on channel 104).
But only 19 mbit/s up.

I kind of figured it out. It appears mine simply has terrible reception (although it shows 4 bars). I moved it to maybe a couple of feet from my router and finally got speeds consistently above 100Mbits/s and sometimes above 200Mbits/s. This is a great router and gives me speeds to devices in every corner of the house 200Mbits/s+, so it's really strange the Nexus Player cannot attain it.
Edit: picked up another for $25 at target and it has the same issues. Next my router my fire phone is getting 400Mbits/s. Both of these still only get 100-200 next to the router and 40-60 where I want it.
So like everyone else I have the 5GHz wifi problem. If I'm not in the same room as the router you can forget using 5GHz. So I found the link to the problem. I just don't know how to solve it. I connected to the 5GHz in a trouble location while having mobile data and Bluetooth turned on. Internet speeds were terrible to the point the speed test would barely run. I turned Bluetooth off, and the speed test are right on par with my old phone, and 5GHz is working fine while Bluetooth is off.
5Ghz is not meant for long range though, 2.4Ghz takes care of that..
You should be able to obtain a signal within around 30feet, potentially more, but it'll drop off at that point.
2.4 carries a lot better..
Could it be to do with the channels that the phone may be using for WiFi??
Turn off all WiFi devices and Bluetooth in the room and see how the test goes.
Very strange.
I am a bit confused as to why people are reporting needing to turn BT off to operate 5GHZ Wifi. BT operates in the 2.4xx space. If you are saying turning it off resolves your problem this points to either a greater hardware/software issue or that you are not operating in 5Ghz at all.
I understand how 2.4 and 5 work as far as range and bandwidth goes. I tested this theory in the same spot my old phone would get 100mbps down (what I pay for) while connected to 5Ghz Wifi. The OnePlus 8 Pro while connected to 5Ghz in the same spot with Bluetooth enabled would cause the phones speed to drop to around 5mbps down and sometimes to the point I get nothing and losing connection. Now if I repeat the same scenario but this time I disable Bluetooth the connection is stable and speeds are 90-100mbps down. I repeated this multiple times sitting in the same location. Yes I understand that BT uses 2.4Ghz. I'm not saying that you need to turn BT off for 5Hhz Wifi to function. What I am saying is some how on this phone, and reported by others, the 5Ghz Wifi on this phone does not function properly. There have been zero solutions or reasons why that I am aware of. My post was pointing to a possible reason why and the fact that it is a hardware/software problem and maybe the right person could look into. I have no reason why the BT being on and off affects the 5Ghz Wifi on this phone and not the 2.4Ghz but it does. And my old phone was a $300 Samsung A50 that I was testing this phone against in my post. I tried to find what channels the phone uses for WiFi but was unsuccessful. If you find the channel lost I would be more than happy to switch channels and see.

It ends up it is an issue with the channel. Before I bought the phone I had manually set my router to channel 153 because auto kept putting me on the same channel as my neighbor. The OnePlus will connect to channels 149 and 153 but isn't really functional. I had to select one of the UNII-1 Channels. Once I did that 5Ghz worked and is functional and stable. The sad part is the reception isn't nearly as good as my $300 Samsung. Maybe they'll improve that if they can. I'm still bewildered why turning off Bluetooth allowed channel 153 to work.

Turn on auto channel on your router. You're going to have issues unless your entire network and devices are moderated perfectly.
Auto does the job
I recently picked up an 8 Pro and an 8t.
Same issue.
Can connect to wifi, no internet.
Reset router, tried all different security settings, forced both on to 2.4 and 5ghz bands only, changed channels on the router, factory resets, used device MAC, Bluetooth off, etc.
No go. I can't get them to connect, period.
Asus AC86U and AC5300 in a mesh setup. I even took the mesh setup down and just used the 86u.
All other devices on my network have no issues, including a 6t, 7 Pro and a 7t. Just the 8 Pro and 8t. Both brand new, received this week. Updated to the latest official 11 OS from OnePlus.
20+ devices on the network with no issues.
I have searched the net high and low to resolve the issue. Plenty of reports of the same issues, no solid resolution. Plenty of bug reports sent to OnePlus.
Any known fixes would be great, that aren't listed above.
Your oneplus devices, are they rooted?
Or pure stock? Where did you get them? Completely official? Which variant?
Wifi being borked is a common symptom of having an incorrect boot.img installed, usually happens when rooting and using an incorrect patched boot.img, phone will boot and will appear ok but wifi won't work.
As the same symptom has happened on two identical devices i'd say there are two main possibilities off the top of my head.
1. If the devices have been unlocked and rooted, then they weren't done properly and have the wrong boot img
2. You have a limit set on your router, get a third phone and set up a hotspot, see if the wifi is functional to eliminate the phones, then just need to troubleshoot your router.
If the phones are pure stock and functional on other networks, and you can add an additional device to your router (one that hasn't been added before) then that's odd.
Did you change the name of your router and the wifi networks have synced over?
remove any previously saved wifi networks from both devices, then try again.
I have the same issue and no fix...

Both phones stock, new out of the box.
Connected both phones to a Hotspot to get them updated to the most recent official releases.
Still the same issues.
As stated in OP, I have searched the net high and low for a fix.
Seems to be a common problem, that hasn't really been addressed.
I don't rule out my network, but again, what more can I change that I haven't already?
20+ devices on the same network, without a problem.
Just doesn't make sense.

So you were able to connect to a hotspot over WiFi just not your router? Have you tried other routers? I recently switched my router and my oneplus (which worked fine on the previous router) I ky connects to the 5ghzfrequency. Will not connect to 2.4ghz no matter what. It also works fine with the routers at work. Don't know why, I've tried everything, but it refused to connect at that frequency on that specific netgear router.
Hi, try to change between WPA2-PSK/TKIP or AES settings.

Hang on if your phones were able to connect to a hotspot then it's your router or the signal from your router.
A WiFi hotspot is a normal WiFi signal so there's nothing wrong with the phones.
I'd say it's the router.
Go to 192.168.0.1 on a web browser on a device connected to your router, check the device list, is there a max allowed devices? 20 isn't an uncommon limitation.
Delete the WiFi SSID from your phone (forget network)
