Color saturation & accuracy

If you're colorblind, please disregard this thread. Rate this thread to express how you deem the color saturation and accuracy of the Huawei Mate 10's display. A higher rating indicates that you think that color accuracy is very high and saturation is excellent.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Coming from iPhone 7+, it's inferior. Does not support wide colour gamut DCI-P3.

I have 3 phones right now. An S7 edge as my daily driver. A P10 plus, and the mate 10 pro.
The P10 has a somewhat inferior display than the other two, but it can reach very high brightness and color saturation levels (but not so accurate colors...). The mate 10 pro produces dimmer image even at max brightness, and struggles to generate a well saturated image. At least it has a kind of better color accuracy than the p10 in my opinion. Sharpness is not a problem. Overall: It is good enough.
Sadly, I can't say it has any better display, or near as good as the s7. S7 edge still a strong performer when it comes to display quality. (brightness and colors)

Perfectly happy with the brightness on my Mate 10 because i haven't come across need to use max brightness in real usage and the auto brightness works fine (with minor instances of getting auto dimmed more than required). However need to note that a when viewing the display at angle it gets dimmer.
Nothing to complain about regards to visibility under sunlight as well. In my view what matters at the end is if the user has a problem with brightness with respect to the persons real life usage rather than comparison with others phones.
In terms of color saturation, one should know even before buying the Mate 10 that the IPS display don't compare with oled on saturation. I put my Mate 10 in vivid mode and im happy with it, even when using side by side by older generation oled screen P9 plus. I also had hands on side by side with the Mate 10 pro at the store and obviously Mate 10 pro oled is more saturated but i was not in any sense been blown away by it or wanting it. Likely that the QHD display + big screen of Mate 10 has spoilt me that im feeling the Mate 10 pro display to be washed out, yellowish and less immersive. But then it would be the same case that when using the Mate 10 pro as stand alone for some time you adapt and don't find those issues a problem anymore.

Yeah, you are right. I am mostly okay with the mate 10 pro. Overall I am very impressed with the quality of the product.

One little flaw to mention. I have some clouding. At moderate to low brightness level, grey color is the worst. (screen shot was taken by another phone, so in real life it isn't that bad)
The problem is less prominent at higher brightness levels.
Anyone else have the same issue?

The lack of really vivid colors, and the somewhat dimmer display is not that big problem. You can get used to it.
The clouding is a bigger issue, but it is almost invisible on medium to high brightness levels on my unit. It looks this bad only on low/the lowest brightness levels. (I rarely use it on min setting.) Samsung phones have better displays, I am sure, but I can live with this. (usually by manually set a bit higher brightness level) But it is my opinion.

I've got the same green tint on lower brightness (30% and lower)
Did any of you guys exchange it and got a better screen with no green tint on grey screens?

No issues at all with my Mate 10 Pro. I just love it! No clouding! Colors are real lifelike. Don't like Samsungs candy displays

I got my replacement device today and it also had that clouding issue! Really pisses me off because one of my main use cases on my mobile devices is reading pocket articles in dark mode. This is where I could see the yellow clouding very clearly. The replacement also had a defective fingerprint scanner (did not work at all not even during setup).
Now I'm waiting for my third device, if that one still has clouding (even if it is slightly) then I'm going to switch to the XL2. At least it doesn't have clouding.
This is meant to be huaweis high end device, such issues are nogos for me. Even my much cheaper but beloved Moto Z Play doesn't have this issue.

I don't understand why people are looking for flaws. I understand that you don't wanna pay so much money and then have any but imo it's something that's there but that I won't notice. What I don't notice is close to non existent to me.

Yes the Samsung is slightly better especially red and blue (funnily I think the greens are more vibrant on the Huawei) and it gets brighter but for me it wasn't a big surprise.
The phone gets a dark black and decent grey when in normal usage on normal brightness. I don't notice my screen being washed out unless I look for it (manually turn brightness down and open chrome).
I never tumbled across this in normal usage so I don't give a f.
If you only use it phone in the dark on low brightness... Well then you should maybe consider selling it.

Im also not searching for flaws that don't affect me. But the low brightness thing does affect me in a major way as Pocket in dark mode looks totally ****ed up. Huge yellowish tint.
And I'm using pocket daily. Also this kind of clouding is not acceptable, if much cheaper devices manage to provide better displays. It's a matter of quality control which Huawei can change in an instance if they want to.
If the third device has the same issue I'm going to sell it or exchange.

just checked my mate 10 pro for this issues since im very alergic to this kind of issues...and must say that i have none of them.. I ran color display app and display is perfect in every brightnes and color..back when i had galaxy s7 i remember that it had those gray stripes(lines) when u put brightnes to low value but on high values it cant be seen anymore...so i think those clouding issues are real and device should be sent back to waranty...let me tell u something i had 4 different xperia flagships and all of them got a white dots or anomalies after one year of usage (bad display construction?) so i always claimed waranty for that....since i pay 700*eur for a top end device it has to work like one and as long it has waranty ill claim it as mutch as i can.dont be fooled by todays manufacturer cuz they dont care about us.

I contacted Huawei about this, the guy in the live chat was very helpful. He said he never heard of that problem before (I believe him) and offered me to send pictures of the screen to a support email address... Never heard from them again. Thanks

I have that issue, I just don't really care... But they told me I could get a replacement device. Having that confirmed I can wait for a year and ask for a replacement device. Fresh battery.

Hi! Is this on Mate 10 Pro? If that's the case, then I experience the same.
At minimum brightness and dark environment it is very noticeable. My problem though is on the upper part of the screen it is darker/reddish and on the lower part, it is lighter. I wonder if we can have this display changed in warranty.

Only issue I have noticed with the Mate 10 Pros is that they have a Redish timt to them specially near the top half of the screen I incrank the brightness always to Max then I don't see the Redish tint ..I have seen this on 4 different phones...I'm about done with my Mate 10 Pro us model crap updates.. Definitely not the smoothest running phone..Selling g mine now I just for to figure what to get next LOL..I'm kinda done with Hauwei for now...Plus I think the Stereo speakers sound like garbage an are not very loud..My old Mate nine wasnloud as hell.an sounded awesome...Now she is at the bottom of a Lake..lol

brightness is noticably higher on my samsung galaxy s7 edge to the Point where i was blinded at night when i moved from the mate 10 pro to the s7 edge, colors also seem better, i use a custom rom though and the colors on emui were awful Everything was so faded and washed out it's better with the new rom and a colder color temperature glowing is absolutely terrible though, i see a huge cloud of White around White Icons on black it ruins the image quality when i use a fully black ui.

Adaptive Brightness

Is anyone else having issues with adaptive brightness taking a while to adjust? I am on stock 8.0 with latest security update. When I open the phone it can take 3 seconds or so to apply before I can see the screen.

yes there is a problem, and it is even more irritating for me when in low light room i turn on the screen and it takes 3-4 sec to turn down the brightness

Yes, I have the same issue. Also, my friend has Xiaomi Mi A1 and he also has the same issue. The ambient light sensor responds slowly for some reason. My wife has Redmi Note 4X and its ambient light sensor is much better. Responds instantly when the light changes (e.g. exposing it to direct sunlight). Also, the screen is so much better on the Redmi Note 4X, I couldn't believe. I compared them side by side, and the whites are so white on Redmi Note 4X. On my Xiaomi Mi A1 the white is...yellow, wtf.

Are you sure night light isn't turned on on your phone ?

there are 2 types of screens used in Mi A1, and apparently one of them is showing yellowish colors like you described. the other one is much better and i am really satisfied with color reproduction even with the blacks (not like amoled ofc but really deep).

Of course not. It's just that the display on Redmi Note 4X has better color accuracy. Before I thought Mi A1 has identical hardware as Redmi Note 4X, buy it seems that's not the case.
By now the only thing that annoys me on my Mi A1 is this ambient light sensor being too slow. Apart from that, the phone is OK for the price.

I guess I wasn't the lucky one to get the "right" display.

Ok, after I posted this I turned up the brightness to 50% and still have adaptive switched on, it seems to have sorted it. Previously it was on 5% so maybe there is a bug there that is seeing what brightness setting level it is and adjusting that way and taking too long. Try it and see if it helps (or lower from 50%)

Mi A1 has identical hardware as Mi 5x. And you will be able to adjust the colour of the screen if you root (I'm not sure if it will make it better, because I've got the "right' display, so can't test it)

you can check which display is used in you phone by entering specific code in dialer (i cant remember the code :/), there you can see which components are used, 2 sets of different screens, memories and cameras( not 100% sure for this one) are used.

Did it and the app (Factorykit Test) hangs with a black screen on version info. I think all the other options are fine.
Does it work with the phone rooted with magisk with the stock rom+recovery?
Edit- disabling magisk and xposed solved the issue. The rear modules are OV12A10ii and OV13880ii.

Doesn't work with Xposed. Disable Xposed, reboot, do the tests and enable it again.

Didn't have an S7 but did have a Note 4 Exynos and Honor 8 before I got the Redmi Note 7phone.
Honestly, speed will probably feel about the same since S7 had the Snapdragon 820 processor.
Gaming performance will probably be about the same as well.
The screen isn't amoled so if that matters to you, you're probably better skipping the Redmi Note 7 and getting the Mi 8(snapdragon 845) or the newer Mi 9(snapdragon 855 with quad hd and dual speakers).
Either of those will definitely be an upgrade to your S7 in multiple ways...
Processor, functionality, performance, build quality, battery life, camera, gaming etc
Mi 8 can now be had for under $400 new as well if price matters to you

I'm not sure... S7 photos may be a little better since it was the flagship of the year a couple years back.
If you're worried about photos, I'd get the Mi 8 or if you can afford... Skip the Xiaomi budget line altogether and go straight for the The Mi 9.
Don't get me wrong... Redmi Note 7 or it's twin brother Mi 8 Lite are both spectacular phones especially for the money to value quotient. They pack a hell of a punch and are popular globally for a reason but coming from the S7, if you're not willing to compromise a little bit in the area of video and photo quality, you're better off shopping for a Xiaomi flagship.
Either phone (Mi 8 or Mi 9) is the flagship experience you want but the Mi 9 will blow you away and be the true upgrade you're looking for

I just got a Redmi Note 7 today, and it will replace a ZTE Axon 7 (Snapdragon 820, like the US version S7), so I'm in a similar position.
Haven't used it much yet, but initial impressions are very good. I just run some tests on both phones in Geekbench Pro, and the Redmi Note 7 won in some areas, while the Axon 7 still smoked it in some tests. You're right, the overall performance should feel pretty similar to the S7.
Benchmarks aside, I'm happy to have a new device that is fully up to date - stock Pie (that I'll dump in favor of LOS as soon as I'm able, haha), a big battery and efficient CPU, a really fast fingerprint scanner in a natural position (meaning NOT on the front), a big screen (any bigger wouldn't fit my pocket), VOLTE, a decent camera, and some support on XDA. It took me a while to decide to buy it because I was concerned about it not having an OLED screen but now I don't think it's going to be an issue - it looks good. Works with Mint Mobile (T-Mobile) here.
Only Day 1, but I'm satisfied so far, especially for $200!

RN7 is way better .. except for the sound quality and the weight (rn7 is heavy lol)

Think you'll be happy with the phone especially for the price.
I know I am.
Use it for a while.... If you don't like it, sell it for a more expensive flagship.
For me it's so good I don't feel the need to have a flagship phone anymore!
Just saw a review on Amazon with someone who mentioned they upgraded to the Redmi Note 7 from an S7 and raved about it.
Check out the review for the Blue 4GB RAM/64GB version.

I finally replaced my S7 and for now I am completely satisfied except the camera. I will test Gcam and see the result...

I got it this morning and yes, the redmi is so heavy. Sound Quality is better on xiaomi but i was using dual speaker sounds on S7 wich makes a plaisent stéréo effect. Camera is a bit better on S7 Thanks to live HDR, dual pixel technology and à good noise réduction.

Yes Redmi note 7 is next level in term of screen size, entertaining purpose, everyday all around. Battery life 2 days on minimal use. Picture not as good as s7 edge

I replaced Huawei P10 whit RN7 and I'm surprised how better it is comparing to P10. Screen picture quality is way better and camera whit Gcam too. P10 have Leica lense blā, blā, but I don't like Leica look and that camera overexposes picture, loses detail in texture whit smoothing, makes picture to oversaturated and colors too neutral. RN7 whit GCam is neutral, exposes good and colors are good. If You like overprocessed pictures then You might want different camera app.
P10 is not S7, but I can say this phone is good. Only complains are weight, and writing is a bit hard for Me in position as I hold the phone. Of course there is minor things like screen is a bit less bright comparing to P10, plastic body, speaker can be more clear, still usb 2.0, no nfc, no IP rating etc. If You don't want to spend alot of money on phone as I do then this is solid choice. For that extra 250€ I would spend on phone I can buy alot of different things for Me.

Both my wife and I just bought the RN7 yesterday to replace both of our S7 Edge, personally I notice the screen resolution difference between the two, I miss the notifications staying at the top, miss the app draw and the camera start up speed is a lot faster than the RN7. The main reason why we switched though is the battery life, both of ours are the US version which use the Snapdragon CPU which only give us around 4 hr SOT, and I pretty much have to charge 2 or 3 times a day (yah on my phone all day long ) , now with the RN7, without doing anything, I just got 8 hr SOT with 10% left ....so yah wire free all day and way cheaper than a flagship Samsung, I know I can get over the cons very soon.

Plus we can help you negate some of the flaws
To get the original look with the added app drawer, install Poco Launcher from the Play Store and you're done with that part.
Screen res? Can you actually notice S7's higher pixels per inch count? Nothing to do about that though.
To overcome the lack of permanent notifications at the top, install Notch Test (Notifications for MIUI) and set up the position, give all permissions to the app, autostart, set battery restrictions to none, and lock it in the app switcher so MIUI can't kill it off. I have the icons position set to 215 from the left and 36 from the top. Works great and mitigates the issue completely (issue for those of us not coming from MIUI, accustomed to "permanent" notifications).
Camera start-up - nothing to do about that unless Xiaomi updates the firmware to do so. GCam takes even more to start, but the image it produces is more than worth the wait.

Clarity/resolution

The ASUS ZenFone 6 (2019) has a crazy crisp display. Just kidding, this is automated text so who knows if this screen is any good. So, you be the judge! A higher rating indicates that it's extremely sharp and clear, and that you cannot see pixels with your naked eye.

I'm really curious as to the screen quality. I realise its gonna be different from an AMOLED panel that I'm used to, but all the other specs are so appealing!!

Asus zenfone 6 , Honor 20 pro , Oneplus 7 pro camera test side by side .
OnePlus 7 vs 7 Pro / Zenfone 6 / Pixel 3a XL / Mi 9 Battery Life DRAIN Test.
Between these two videos you should get a decent idea of the display compared to other led displays .

I think the zenphone looks a shade darker than the other led display due to its ips

I can confirm that there is a noticeable difference to a AMOLED display (coming from the Lenovo P2) and a side by side comparison clearly shows a better contrast in the Lenovo. But I also have to say that I only noticed that after a couple of hours with the Asus when checking back on the Lenovo. The display of the Asus is good and also in the dark not too bright.

I can confirm that there is a noticeable difference to a AMOLED display (coming from the Lenovo P2) and a side by side comparison clearly shows a better contrast in the Lenovo. But I also have to say that I only noticed that after a couple of hours with the Asus when checking back on the Lenovo. The display of the Asus is good and also in the dark not too bright.

Apparently the max brightness the phone can go is application dependent, in Chrome it's 600 nits and in photos or its 550 or something. Can we expect a mod or anything to make it even that is 600 across everything in the future?

How is the display in the real world . ALOT of folks on youtube are saying its pretty dark . I want to get it and understand its not oled but I dont want a dark display .

In general: for me the display is very good, just needs to be a bit more brighter.

I'm coming from a OnePlus 3 and haven't compared to other recent phones, but I'm impressed with this display. It can get bright enough, at least for my usage, and even though blacks aren't as black as an AMOLED display, they're still black and not what you see on some cheap displays. Is a <Samsung-flagship> display better? Yeah, but the price is also higher than the ZF6.
The only setting I had to change was the colour mode. The two pre-defined options are "wide color gamut" (used by default) and "standard", which is more like sRGB. This is completely personal preference, for me "standard" looks more what I'd expect to see, not super vibrant colours that almost look fake. Anyway, it can be changed so it's not really a problem.
I didn't use the "always on" feature on my OP3 in order to save battery, but I can see users that liked that feature missing it on this phone.

Photo quality

Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Xiaomi Mi Note 10 come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Dynamic range is pretty good comparing with "modern" tiny-sensored iphones.
Funny thing, that Nokia PureView 808 (2012) STILL provides better resolution and better signal-to-noise ratio.

Thanks you! To me, the Mi Note 10 camera looks like a real winner. The detail of the Mi Note 10 shot is noticeably better, especially on the right side of the canal. I believe that the color balance is noticeably better, too.

I like the mi note 10 as the photos are not altered by the software more what you see and that's what you get. I love the Lumia 1020 and I used it for 2 years plus till it died, and I moved on to Samsung Galaxy S7, pic were good but unrealistic as colours were enhanced .
With this device I take more real pic.

If you edit the picture with Snapseed and +25 to saturation the Mi Note 10 pic looks almost identical to the S10 on the colour front

While waiting for my Mi Note 10 to arrive, I am starting to wonder if I have made a mistake. I am replacing a Pixel 3XL with the Mi Note 10, based largely on the initial camera reviews and the Dxomark rating.
But now I am reading less than rosy reviews of the camera, like this one:

I also saw the oversharpening and overprocessing with the telephoto lenses, as well as the fringing. Can others share their experience with the camera, compared to brands like Apple, Google and Samsung?
Also, how good is Xiaomi at fixing such issues with updates? I am afraid that like many other Chinese companies, they will drop support for the Mi Note 10 in favor of the bazillion new models they seem to have in the pipeline.

I received my Mi Note 10 and took a few shots. Overall, disappointing images, compared to my Pixel 3XL.
Main camera: The dynamic range of the main camera is not nearly as good as that on the Pixel. Even forcing HDR on the Mi Note 10 doesn't help much, as the Pixel shows more detail in both sun-lit and shadow areas. Strangely, given the higher resolution of the Mi Note, the definition of blades of grass in a landscape shot is noticeably better on the Pixel. Also, the colors are kind of "electric" on the Mi Note 10, not natural.
Portrait mode is poor in less than bright conditions.
In Wide mode, the dynamic range is also pretty poor.
Night city light shots from the Mi Note 10 are not as good as the Pixel, although in Night Shot mode the Mi Note 10 improves noticeably. But it still suffers from poor dynamic range.
The only shot where the Mi Note did better the Pixel was at 10x zoom. The Pixel 3 does it all with just one lens, and at its maximum 7x it had somewhat less detail than the Mi Note 10.
Sadly, the Mi Note feels like a second rate phone on the photography front. Funny enough, I don't have any issues with the rest of the phone. The fingerprint unlock is not fast, but I can live with it. I don't have touch issues on the edges. But the main reason I bought it was for the camera, which in my experience so far, is just not very good.
I am wondering what DXOMARK was testing and how they came up with their conclusions, which are so different than mine?

I strongly believe that a 27 mp photo taken with a sensor 4 time bigger than the 12mp pixel 3 sensor has less detail compared with this one. Really, i believe that!! I swear!!
The dxomark test was made with the mi note 10 pro that have a 8p Lens system, but the difference Is very very little.
If you feel the pixel 3 photos Better than mi note 10, i suspect that you bought a mi note 3. Ahahahha

Believe what you want. The issue is not resolution, it's dynamic range. Detail in strongly lit and in shadow areas is worse in images taken on the Mi Note 10, than in images taken on the Pixel 3XL. The color is also over-processed and looking just tacky.
I am really disappointed, because I thought I was getting a great bargain, but instead got less than I paid for (the Pixel 3XL is cheaper nowadays than the Mi Note 10 and the 4XL can be had for a $200 or so more, on Google Fi). I'll give this phone a week or so, just to make sure, but my initial impression is not good.
My guess is it's all software. I tried a couple of the GCam mods, one crashes after each shot, the other one is a bit better than the stock main camera, but still not nearly as good as the Pixel 3XL.
I am on the latest Global, with the January update.
I should also note that I am looking at the original camera images on a 30" calibrated monitor, where the differences are glaring. On the phone itself the over-processed Mi Note 10 images look pretty good, but while this may be good enough for some, it's not what I am looking for.

OK, just went for a run and took a few shots along the way with the Mi Note 10. Late afternoon, good light.
In my opinion, they are all are pretty bad, mainly because the dynamic range is so poor. On my calibrated monitor, they also appear overly processed and the grass takes an electric hue, which reminds me of Chinese phones from years back.

You say that the pixel images are better, I see it completely different. The resolution is worlds lower and the whole picture looks much more blurred when you look at it in detail.
I agree with you that the colors are a bit more intense, that's why the pictures look better at first, but that's not so. The Note 10 photos are just more neutral, but that doesn't say anything about the quality of the pictures, that’s only a part of the Software.
A small change in Photoshop (gradation curves and saturation) and the Mi Note 10 looks much better. I even think, after a little tuning in Photoshop you can't compare both cameras at all. In my eyes, the pixel is far behind. None of the photos of the pixel shown by you are better for me.

But I think the issues with the Mi Note are a bit bigger than a small change in PS. I just lined up an image from the Mi Note 10 and an image from the Pixel 3XL, both at 100%, and took a screen shot. One would expect a much greater difference in resolution between the Mi Note sensor and the Pixel 3 sensor, right? I certainly expected a lot better, both in terms of detail and dynamic range.
But while the Note image has a bit finer detail, there is a lot of smearing and feathering. The orange/red tree in the upper right looks painted in both, and it shouldn't really on the Note image. While when pixel peeping I like the Mi Note 10 image better, I am wondering if all the smearing is causing the compressed apparent dynamic range? It looks like a Pointillist painting.
But as I said, I hope I am just overreacting and missing something. I'd really like for this to be the great bargain I hoped for. But I am not feeling it right now.

Just use gcam and small tweaks or even just load up pre-configured xml file can easily solve all your problem and achieve better quality image

I understand what you mean and I've seen this kind of thing many times in pictures of Note 10. I guess the software just screws that up. The sensor itself is certainly much more powerful than you can see on some pictures.
It gives the impression that it tries too much to suppress the noise, so a lot of the details that should be there disappear.
Let's hope that a software update will come or Gcam will solve the problem.
- I would describe the camera like this: Right light, right situation, absolutely perfect shot.
- Minor problems with lighting (too little light or too high dynamic range) and the pictures are only average.
In my eyes it is not a camera that works well everywhere. The software simply needs more attention and time to take the right photo. By time I mean now the correct positioning or maybe manual settings on a photo instead of the automatic.
In any case the sensor has enormous power, but unfortunately not always and not everywhere

OK, I've calmed down
I went home yesterday and spent some time taking night shots with the camera and viewed the whole batch on my TV set up (it's a very large TV, calibrated On a large screen, I can appreciate the additional detail from the Mi Note 10. And you are right, under the perfect conditions the images are great. In fact, when comparing on the TV, Xiaomi seems to be closer to images from the iPhone 11, which is a good thing.
But on a lot of images, there is smearing and definite crushing of color in high contrast scenes. It seems the greens can be particularly troublesome for the Mi Note. I compared 108mp to 27mp and the smearing and the color crush is really evident only in the 27mp.
I wish there was a 16x9 option using the 108mp sensor as is.
I guess I was expecting too much. The Pixel 3XL photos still look more dynamic on the TV screen, but in perfect conditions the Mi Note provides better detail.
I will probably keep it and hope that Xiaomi improves the camera app to better take advantage of the large sensor. What is the experience of others with Xiaomi updates?

Why do you need a 16:9 option on the 108mp sensor? Just crop the photo into 16:9 afterwards, cause that's exactly what other phones do that let you take 16:9 photos.

Why 16x9? Because most photos I keep are eventually viewed on large 16x9 screens (TV's). I would rather frame correctly while taking the photo than crop later. I'd imagine that others prefer this too, since there is always a 16x9 option for the main camera.
Plus, the file size would be smaller and likely the processing time will be less, too.

Why frame correctly? You can also frame it correctly after. The 108mp mode isn't made for point and shoot. It's meant to get the max out of it so you still have to tweak a few things after so you might as well crop it. Takes 2 seconds.
