Galaxy A5 (2016) Enabling seemingly hidden wireless charging? - Galaxy A3, A5, A7, A8, A9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

When opening an old A5 from 2016, I saw the mat for NFC, which this phone has obviously. But it looks like there's a thin coil in the middle which should be for NFC, with a thick and beefy coil on the outside, which looks just like a wireless charging coil. This is probably cost cutting on Samsung's part, using the same mat for a phone that does have wireless charging. But I want to know if this could be enabled in software? The phone is rooted. If anyone has found out how, please reply to this with your solution!
Thanks

One of the speakers at the release event said it would support wireless charging. Based on this site: http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/127512-samsung-galaxy-s5-accessories-first-look-at-s-charger-pad-s-view-cover-more it looks like it will require a replacement back like the S 4.
Thank you for the info. I can only hope that also classic cover would available because the cover on photos is terrible.
Should support it.
I already ordered two qi charging pads and the back cover from mobilefun.

[Q] question about wireless chargers

I am purchasing a Galaxy S5 next week and I am looking at the wireless chargers as that is the main reason I am upgrading my S3 in the first place. I have read that once placed on the charger the screen will read "wireless Charging" What I am wanting to know is if the phone is still on and if my wireless hotspot will continue to work in wireless charge mode?

Hi ! Your S3 can already have wireless charging if u didn't know ^^
Your phone will still be on(screen off ofc), and for hotspot, I'm 99.9% sure it works while charging

I kind of thought the hotspot would still be active, on the other note I had no idea the s3 was wireless charging. does that mean all it needs is a pad to lie it on? Not sure if I understand?

Yes it will. Or at least it does for me, so I don't see any reason it wouldn't for you as well. Your hotspot range may be reduced during wireless charging due to the RF interference, but if you had a strong signal before hand then you should be fine..
.
I've noticed no loss in wifi, hotspot or 3g performance while wireless charging, and the S3 and S5 can both use the same charging pad because they both QI compatible.
~7 dB effective attenuation when wirelessly charging my S5
Inferred from the increased 802.11N PER in an adjacent Asus RT-N66U router.
And consistent with decreased data throughput.
PER calculated from Ethereal capture.
Sample size = 5 x 10^3 packets
PER (packet error rate) is 1-(0.999^N), where N is the number of bits in the data packet
N = 32
NF transmit output = +17 dBm

None of the S5 variants that I have seen will wirelessly charge by simply placing them on a charger. You need to add two things - the charger and a coil. The coil is the part that is inside the phone, a sort of receiver. The coil looks like a thick sticker and you can either buy an optional battery cover from Samsung that has a coil in it.. or add a third party coil to the inside of your existing battery cover. This is in contrast to say a Nexus phone where the coil is not optional - it is already built into all of the Nexus phones.
So it's odd to say that you are upgrading from a S3 to a S5 because of wireless charging.. when both the S3 and S5 need to have the same components added to add wireless charging. You seem to think that the coil is standard on S5's and it isn't.
Note that the optional Samsung wireless battery cover is thicker than the standard battery cover, which means that some cases will no longer fit your phone. And if you add a coil to the inside of the standard S5 battery cover, you need to choose a coil that is thin or you may displace the battery cover and lose the watertight seal.

Thanks for straightening that out for me. Now I understand. Yes I am upgrading from a s3. I knew nothing about wireless charging until recently. Guess I need to get my nose into these boards more often. I am a road warrior and ran into usb port issues on my s3 in Denver a few months ago. I panic because I couldn't charge my phone, so I went to the closest 3rd party phone repair store and they sold me an extra battery and a external charger. That worked great but the fact that I had to swap batteries 2-3 times a day, left my phone without a case, and you know what happened next. So since my upgrade is tomorrow, it's time for a new phone and I am excited for the s5 anyway. Thanks again for the help,:good:

No doubt you will love the S5. It's a significant upgrade from the S3, which was already a very good phone in it's own right. Enjoy

Possible internal wireless charging options

so did a teardown of a busted moto x i have to see if it is possible to insert a wireless charging coil in it and stumbled upon something interesting
there seems to be a connector that doesn't go to anything and is taped off. it hides under the moto x logo on the back. if i had to guess i'd say it's either A) for a charging coil, or B) for some type of button or fingerprint sensor they abandoned.
i'm leaning towards charging coil because the nexus 6 has wireless charging and is a similar design. if we could get someone with a nexus 6 to see if they have the same connector and see if it's attached to anything, we could possible get our hands on that part and insert it into our device. pics below.
i also located some possible points to solder on a coil, these points show 5 volts when connected to a charger.
This is interesting...
Can you trace where that connector goes?

No not really, it goes to the board and after that there's no way to track it. We gotta work on getting a look inside the nexus 6 ,see if it has it.
Judging by the 4 lanes on the ribbon it doesn't seem that the connector is for wireless charging since the coil needs only 2. Although manufactures combine the connector of the nfc antenna and the wireless coil now days so i could be wrong. It could very well be for finger print sensor where moto pulled back the last moment.

saw this today, looks like that cable is not for the wireless charger. probably a fingerprint scanner they 86'd. bummer. but there are still contact points we can tap into

This could be of some help. For internal wireless charging they had to make some changes to the Kernel itself but in the end it was pretty successful At least for the OP.
I don't see the point in the kernel mod?
Will anyone try this? I am dying to get one but I'm so heavily invested in wireless charging in the Nexus 5. I don't want to ruin the beauty of the X with a crappy microUSB sticking out the bottom.

Ticwatch Pro: Adding either solar or qi charging

I've had the Ticwatch Pro for a few months now and the only thing missing is some way of wireless charging....
I was thinking, since there's a sort of bump underneath it, where the heartrate monitor lies, and knowing where the speaker grill is, there surely must be a way to add a 3d printed device with some small magnets that can act as a holder for a qi coil...
Alternatively, there must be a way to add a a watchstrap with some solar cells (even if it's DIY) with the input to the pogo pin connectors under the watch itself...
Along that second idea, I saw these cells:
https://www.amazon.com/Powerfilm-Flexible-Solar-Panel-MP3-25/dp/B002MF2XCO
Any thoughts?
Ciao
Did you done some steps forward on this idea ?
Nope... still looking....
Good luck !!
I am waiting for my nw TICWATCH pro ... just now bought
I still haven't found anything but I can't believe it's that difficult (at least in my mind)
I just had a vision... I have a semi broken (aesthetics mainly I believe) Moto 360 1st edition which has a charging Qi coil inside it. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIVJb5Q_IHg)
Any idea if I can just rip it out of the Moto and somehow solder it into the Ticwatch? Both devices out of warranty by now anyways....

Magnetic phone mount

Do you guys thing that a magnetic phone mount will affect the s10 due to the new wireless charging feature?
pitaka is making a case for the S10+ and S10 that won't interfere with wireless charging...

Should not affect phone as long as you dont place the metal plate in center of back of phone. Place closer to the bottom and stick it to the case not the phone. It's a pain in the a** to peel off phone. 20 bucks at walmart.
There are magnetic wireless mounts available, but my experience had been mixed. I just updated my review on Amazon of this device, from 5 stars to 2 (awaiting approval of the update). It was great for the most part, but the big issue for me was the inconsistent charge rate vs heating whilst charging. Sometimes it charged well, without heating much. Other times it was the opposite. I think performance was heavily influenced by exact positioning and the exact position needed was not repeatable every time.

I'm waiting for word on whether or not this Scosche mount is compatible with the S10+.
https://www.scosche.com/collections/wireless-phone-chargers#/page/1
I have a similar charging dash mount from Mophie installed in my car right now that has worked well with my Galaxy S8+ as a mount, but I never ran the wires for the charging part of it. I have Mophie's desktop version as well that I have on my nightstand for nightly charging and it works well to charge the phone through the Mophie magnetic case, so it is possible to have magnetic mounting and wireless charging in one unit. Unfortunately, Mophie canceled their ChargeForce line a while back so I won't be able to get a compatible case for my S10+ and I'll have to switch to the Scosche or some similar system instead.
There should be a Nillkin Magic Case released this month, with four built in magnets/plates to match the Nillkin charger. It looks like this design would avoid or reduce the problems of misalignment and/or overheating as it keeps thing well clear of the induction coil. S9+ version below. See Q&A regarding S10+.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Nillkin-Fl...Wireless-Samsung-Galaxy-S9-Plus/dp/B07BKXNL5Q
On a side note, my S10+ 1TB should arrive tomorrow, direct from Samsung.
