Hey everyone.
I figure we could chat on what method you prefer on charging your wizard.
Do you charge always by USB?
Do you only use a wall charger?
A combination of both?
And why? Is there a benefit for using a certain method?
I try to always charge with the wall charger.
I use usb at work - when I need to, but find that it is more of a flash charge, that does not last nearly as long as the wall charger.
Just my 2 cents
Really I heard someone saying charging with a USB saturates the chemicals better?
not sure though.
as with any chemical, the longer the "cure" time, the longer it lasts.
My wall charger charges it too quick and it dies quicker. USB seems to last longer. Also, I have been using a wall plug usb adapter for a long time (the kind you stick into the outlet and plug a usb cord into it) I never had an issue. it wasn't untill i used the original wall charger that I started to have some problems (like I bought a brand new battery and brought it in from the cold (winter) pluged it into my phone; kept my phone off and charged it. apparently the batt got so hot that the plastic covering cracked. the stupid thing was that the batt was not room temp... but I'm afraid my wall charger is deffinately retired. I had the old batt for over 2 years, maybe even 3 and so far it has held up pretty well with usb charging.
Still holds up pretty well if I use usb.
Note: on the wiki they say that the Wizard last about 11hrs on a full charge. that is a blatant lie! I have had it last about 2 days (like the nights I didn't go home) the batt never dropped lower than 30% ever!!! untill I flashed it to a different rom
I posted a fix I think works for me on Merlin's Slim rom 6.1 ver2
It consists of registry settings and and a cab file that should adress your power issues. have fun lookins
I like charging with charge
It takes longer time to charge by usb than using wall charegr

i charge it overnight with the wall charger.
however, since i have started to play on it at work, i bought a wind up usb cable, hacked the wires inside to only leave the power connections, and i bring that to work to recharge it on the computer. call me paranoid, but since the tech support guys jump in and mess with the computer remotely i dont want any chance of them digging thru my phone
and if i have to have to charge it in the car, i have an old fm transmitter you can plug a flash drive into and it will play mp3s...so i plug my phone in there instead and viola el cheapo car usb charger
What lasts longer?
Hi I've got a problem with my phone. If I connect it to the PC using orginal USB cable it charging, transfering data and so. But if I connect the phone to the wall charger it don't charge only screen wake up but no charging on battery icon. The wall charger is orginal too. I've tried changing ROMs.
This problem is really anoying so if You can, please help me.
You write you use the original charger, but do you also use the original USB cable? It matters, cheap USB cables do not work on the Defy :-(
seems some problem in wall socket adaptor

Got to check that out, cause I've been wondering why I can charge my Defy+ in some wall chargers, some computers, and so far no car chargers. Would be great if the cables are the cause. Thanks
I use the orginal usb cable too

There's nothing wrong with your phone, ROM, or USB cable, but your wall charger is broken.
Just get your charger replaced. That's what warranties are for.
The Defy doesn't really care about USB cables. If it's switched off it will charge anyway, so the ROM doesn't matter either. But it's very picky about the current and voltage stability of the charger. That's why many 3rd party chargers don't work no matter what cable you plug into it.
I was in non-official phones service and they check charging on another adaptors but i think they were not original. Anyway as i remember when lastly phone was charging it was a storm and on the next day it wasn't working but i'm not sure.
I know this thread is old but i didn't find solution to this problem, soooo:
The answer is = turn off debugging over USB

What's debugging got to do with wall charger??
Doesn't matter from where I send it, what matters is written above
So why when I turn it on i have problems with charging?
Bug?
if u use External charger u must charge ur phone with mcgyver for 10 min.
after that use the External charger.
becaz ur battery so low.
Charging Issue
I got the same problem from the day i bought the mobile... The service center people told its charger issue and need to replace the charger. So Changed the wall charger under warranty. It took around 2 months to get my charger back. But the things are same. It sometime charge. Sometimes the screen will on and didnt charge. I tried changing different Versions. Same thing. Even the service center people have no idea about it....
Could you check if the micro-usb connector of the phone or that of the cable is clean, dirt and dust reduces or prevents transfer rate of electricity.
Last night I was charging my S4 in my car adapter, but noticed the cattery was still going down. I went home and plugged it into my AC (wall charger) and went to bed. The next morning the S4 was dead and couldn't charge. The only solution was to plug it in my computer and went an hour for it to get some charge back.
I have a root i337m running rootbox 4.1, and I went into TWRP to wiped the phone and installed the ROM again - no luck.
Is this a battery issue, a software issue or a whole device issue? Thanks.

I don't think its a rom issue. I tried charging via USB as well and had phone charging a few hours and it ate crap. So I only charge via AC outlet only. USB charges but at a very slow pace.

I made an error in the OP - I meant to say I left it to charge on the wall and I got nothing.
Right now, the charge light doesn't even come on if I plug it with AC.

I've tried 3-4 different chargers and cables, same issue. Charges slowly through PC,doesn't charge at all with AC. Did a factory reset after reverting to stock FW, no luck.

I doubt it's a ROM issue, but there's no harm in reverting back to stock to see the results (assuming you've backed it up). If it all fails, i think you should unroot and send it to Samsung for the warranty. Software problems are somewhat easier to fix here than hardware, so it may be the best option to let Samsung handle it.
I had similar problems with my Note 2 before and now with my S4. What I found was, sometimes the usb cable wasn't tightly plugged into the wall charger. Once I've made sure of this, I've been able to charge (AC) every time.
I found this article that indicates that the S4 is looking for special sauce on the D+D- pins.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/6914/samsung-galaxy-s-4-review/2
Obviously the Galaxy S 4 will charge with any USB charger, but the charge time will simply be longer. Samsung uses a voltage divider and signals the presence of their own charger by sending 1.2-1.3 V across the D+ / D- pins, this is similar to what Apple does with 2.0 or 2.8 V across the pins for various USB chargers they've shipped over the years. This signaling is essentially Samsung's proprietary tablet charging signaling which they've employed on the Galaxy Note 2 and now SGS4, in fact the two use the same exact charger, so it's worth tossing out your old ones and getting the appropriate one to take advantage of the faster charging.
However I do not believe this to be 100% true. I think not all chargers will work..
I took a charger that is very vanilla (Wall charger but the D+D- pins are NC) and it works with the S3 and NEXUS7 but does not work with the S4.
This charger uses a stock USB cable so I took a wall charger that had gone bad but had a dedicated cable and hacked off the end and wired up my own cable...
That works! So it appears that the S4 will only charge properly with certain chargers that do something to the D+D- pins (either shorting them with a resistor like the article indicates
I then took a look at the cable I used to replace. It is a Motorola cable and it has the ID pin pulled high built into the cable... So I suspect that is required for the phone to work... But to fast charge it will need the special sauce indicated above!
Had the same issue and found the solutions which worked for me. Go into the developer mode and deactivate the usb debug mode.
Had the exact same issue. I took a soldering iron to my charging port on my phone. Problem solved. The ID pin had a bad joint.

I have a strange issue, my s4 is detected by pc, charges normally with usb ( wall or pc charge ) my battery is full but when I take the cable from microUSB port and s4 should work with the battery, turns off and consumes no battery, it's like refusing to use the battery and that it is full! battery checked on a sph l 720
I've tried installing other roms with safestrap but I still have the same problem, refuses to consume battery and while the battery is at 100% ,my s4 shows 0% if I disconnect the usb cable... game over. However, I can be on the safestrap menu for hours only with the battery, no problem, is a problem of rom I think but did not know how to fix it .. : (
I'm having the same issue as the original poster. The USB port is good, charges fine when connected to PC (although much slower because of different mVS). Have tried amidst everything and nothing fixes it. I've turned debugging mode off and back on, restore to backup, complete wipe and reinstall of 2 ROMs with and without apps, fix permissions, different kernels, different USB cables... The adaptor is in good condition. But when plugged in while on my phone doesn't recognize that's it's connected. Previously out would give a false charging reading. If off sometimes I got the grey bar battery but note is just vibrating every few seconds. Idk what to do...

I had the same problem. S4 will recognize charger as USB charger, not AC. solution was to clean usb port connector, was some cloth covering wires. then restarted and worked ok
I am having trouble charging the phone the same way. I have reset the phone 3 times and still can't get a charge.
HELP! Used "incompatible" USB cable all night, now only charges w/ computer USB port!
Okay I know this sounds crazy, but I've tried 3 cables, 2 car charges, and 2 wall charges that all worked previously... And what I've found is that I can only get my LG G2 to charge when its plugged into a computer USB port. I've got car chargers that are both 1A and 2A, as well as wall chargers with varying amperage ratings too. And they all used to charge the phone and even still do charge my Samsung S3! Also the same USB cable that won't charge the phone when plugged into a car or wall charger, WILL charge it when its plugged into a computer!!??!
And to make things even more strange, Android reports the phone as "Charging", but the percentage never goes up. And using CurrentWidget or BatteryMonitorWidget, the phone shows as "Plugged In" but shows "DIScharging" and shows the mAh utilization as draining at 18mA...
The only thing I did differently is that last night, I used the USB cable that came with my ChromeCast device to charge the phone. I plugged it into the LG USB adapter that came with the phone. I didn't realize until this morning though that a message had popped up saying the phone was "incompatible" with the the charger/cable and that I should unplug it avoid possible damage..
Did that possibly break the charging capabilities?? That seems not possible...
:crying:
Gotta ask... Have you powered down and rebooted to see if that clears it up?

Unfortunately yes I have...
It's a shame you didn't see the warning message as soon as you plugged it in. Can you take it back under warranty? Sounds like it did do the damage it warned you about. The last ditch effort I would suggest is do a factory reset and see if that fixes it. If not, take it back.

Yea, I'm hoping not.. I may have to factory reset.. Boo... But I'm having trouble believing that a normal USB cable REALLY could do damage though.. I have another charger/cable combo that I keep plugged in on the wall in the kitchen and use it all the time for my S3. When I plug the G2 into that charger, it gives that same "incompatible charger" message. But what is so different about this phone that prevents it from being charged by any standard USB cable..??

I have a handful of charges at home and they all output different levels of power... though most are much less than LG G2 default charger.
Okay REALLY strange... NOW, the chargers charge my phone, but only show charge them.. Using the LG charger & cable, only slow charging is possible..
Seems my other charges are working now too.... Anyone have any thoughts?
First of all I'm very sorry for posting on a developer Forum, I had lurked here for about a month looking for an answer and I can't find it. I wouldn't had made an account otherwise.
Here's my problem, my phone randomly stops charging (not notice neither) since the Oreo Update. I believe is because of the update because I return my old phone and bought a second phone and decided to leave it on Nougat, I decided to update it to Oreo because I missed notification badges and the day after I already had the same problem.
Things of Notice:
*Both phones where new and on the latest security patch.
*My phone does charge overnight when in wall socket but will stop charging when I used the USB on my car (my car has a USB adapter but if I charge it there, it will keep READING USB and repeating the cycle)
*Phone also stops charging when I use an extended battery. (I'm an avid Pokemon Go Player)
*Restating the phone a couple of times, fixes the issue.
Is there anything that I can do? everything else about the phone works perfectly (Facebook takes a long time to load but that's it). If there's an answer already please forward me to that post. Thanks again
Could it be because the update enabled quick charge, so now the phone requires a bigger energy output from the USB?
Does changing the cable help? If not, try doing a factory reset.

Since this is my first phone with USB type C I only have the one cable. I had notice the battery backup is charging so it seems like a problem with the car charger but I need to test it first. What charging output do I need to charge a modern phone like this?

I'm sorry I answer this late, I was unable to log into the site from my phone. (forgot the pasword). I did some testing in the weekend and it did charge on my laptop, it charge extremely slow., Just 3% in like an hour. (with constant use).
I kept using it with my power bank it kept charging reliably as well as in my house. But it keeps having the some problem at the car, So here's what I'm wondering. If I use one of those 3.0 USB car chargers will it charge my phone? without a problem to my car? I don't know if this phone supports fast charging (the specs says yes but I never seen the fast charging message with the regular charging)

No worries. Yes, laptop charging is slow.
I'm not sure if the stock ROM supports fast charging but custom ones do, and it can't harm your device. I don't see why it would harm your car if it was made for it. Maybe your car's USB port broke.

Thanks for posting your problem and the answer!
I have had the same reaction on one of my phones after updating to oreo.
Changing the charger from a 1A model to a 2,4A model solved the issue.
