The Charging Method Thread

Hey everyone.
I figure we could chat on what method you prefer on charging your wizard.
Do you charge always by USB?
Do you only use a wall charger?
A combination of both?
And why? Is there a benefit for using a certain method?

I try to always charge with the wall charger.
I use usb at work - when I need to, but find that it is more of a flash charge, that does not last nearly as long as the wall charger.

Really I heard someone saying charging with a USB saturates the chemicals better?
not sure though.

as with any chemical, the longer the "cure" time, the longer it lasts.
My wall charger charges it too quick and it dies quicker. USB seems to last longer. Also, I have been using a wall plug usb adapter for a long time (the kind you stick into the outlet and plug a usb cord into it) I never had an issue. it wasn't untill i used the original wall charger that I started to have some problems (like I bought a brand new battery and brought it in from the cold (winter) pluged it into my phone; kept my phone off and charged it. apparently the batt got so hot that the plastic covering cracked. the stupid thing was that the batt was not room temp... but I'm afraid my wall charger is deffinately retired. I had the old batt for over 2 years, maybe even 3 and so far it has held up pretty well with usb charging.
Still holds up pretty well if I use usb.
Note: on the wiki they say that the Wizard last about 11hrs on a full charge. that is a blatant lie! I have had it last about 2 days (like the nights I didn't go home) the batt never dropped lower than 30% ever!!! untill I flashed it to a different rom
I posted a fix I think works for me on Merlin's Slim rom 6.1 ver2
It consists of registry settings and and a cab file that should adress your power issues. have fun lookins

i charge it overnight with the wall charger.
however, since i have started to play on it at work, i bought a wind up usb cable, hacked the wires inside to only leave the power connections, and i bring that to work to recharge it on the computer. call me paranoid, but since the tech support guys jump in and mess with the computer remotely i dont want any chance of them digging thru my phone
and if i have to have to charge it in the car, i have an old fm transmitter you can plug a flash drive into and it will play mp3s...so i plug my phone in there instead and viola el cheapo car usb charger

Came from a TP2 and I could charge via USB at around 900 mA using fast charge driver.
Since I am a complete Android n00b, and an EVO n00b I have two questions.
1. Are there any apps out there that can show you how fast the battery is charging and discharging? I had one called Battery Monitor in WM, and I want an Android version of that.
2. It appears that USB charging is quite slow. Can anyone confirm the speed at which this phone charges via a USB port?
3. Is there a way to make this faster?

A 1. I don't believe there is one (someone correct me if wrong), but there are apps to monitor your battery percentage.

Thanks...Not sure how long it takes as I havent had the phone too long. I know while plugged into my computer last night it wouldn't charge very well.

Computers have much lower power than a wall socket. If you want to charge the EVO fast use the wall plug. Anyone who uses a Mac and the wired keyboard should know what I am talking about.

A USB port provides 500ma of power, you can get micro USB cable that will Y off and plug into two USB ports, providing 1000ma of power.

Every computer I owned charged my TP2 at around 800-900 mA as long as the fast charge driver was on the phone.
So I know for a fact that it's possible. It's limited by the phone, not the USB port. Appreciate the reply, but did you read Negrito's link?
And Negrito, I did search... This forum.... No hits. I see the link you provided was in the Hero forum. I didn't realize that the fast charge USB issue was affecting other Android phones as this is my first.

My bad broseph, totally forgot im still subscribed to Hero threads. I just switched to the Evo Launch day.
Its not really an issue per se as that's how all phones normally operate. On WinMo we just got spoiled my No2Chems hack. Anyone know if No2Chem made the jump to Android?
I have seen a lot of familiar names on the Evo forum, like OMJ, and Caulkin!!! I cant wait until someone comes up with an untethered root option and how to bypass the NAND cause I know the ROMs are just going to be simply amazing.

Was digging around in the custom menus, can't remember which one, but one of the ones that you type ##numbers# and enter your MSL and there was a check box for USB charging. Mine was unchecked for some reason. I left it alone but wonder if that makes a difference?

I've tested a few charging scenarios and can tell you that using a wall charger that outputs 1000 ma will help speed up the charge.

There's a nice Rosewill 4 port charger, that will output 2000 ma IF you have only one device plugged in. With two devices plugged in, it falls back to 1000 ma (still really good). I have this in the kitchen for the kids to jack their various usb things in for charging.
The thing to remember is that the phone will pull as much as it can (most recent phones can pull between 750 and 1000 ma.) What will cause it to charge slower is not usually a software setting, it's having a port that will only put out 500 ma or less...which is what many computers output.

I don't think mine has taken more than 4-5 hours to fully charge and signal strength isn't the greatest at my house so that probably has an impact on it as well... I've no idea if that's normal for a smartphone or if it's considered slow, I don't think my Sony Ericsson feature phone was any faster but the battery indicator on that thing was wildly inaccurate anyway.
My EVO seems to charge just as fast w/the included HTC adapter as with a generic Philips one I had, as well as one of those retractable cables. I was afraid that cable wouldn't be very well shielded and it wouldn't charge right but it seems fine, I'll only be using it when I travel anyway.

No one has seen nor heard from No2Chem in months... Some people think he may have died

I could charge my Touch Pro 2 in about an hour or two using a standard usb plug on any computer I owned.
Might I add the Touch Pro 2 and the EVO share the same identical battery. The EVO obviously draws more current..... I found while using my EVO while plugged into a computer, it barely charges at all. My guess is its discharging while charging at a very similar rate.

Contrary to what most of you are saying, the ma rating of the charger really makes no difference as the phone (and prior htc phones) will pull <500ma if they detect they are plugged into a computer or non-official charger and 1a if they detect an htc charger (which can even damage 500ma chargers). The way this is detected is through grounding of one of the microusb pins in the official charger (and indeed many generic chargers but not all will be detected this way). Absent this grounding (I forget which pin), it will charge at a slower speed. I know of cheap 500ma chargers which have been caused to smoke by attaching a cable with that grounding fooling the phone into thinking it is an oem charger. Many chargers labeled 1a will charge at the 500ma rate as well.
Also, modern computers are fully capable of outputting 1a of power through the usb port. While the spec indeed is 500ma, with a proper cable (or the fastcharge driver for windows mobile), you can force a 1a power draw without any issues. Cheap usb hubs or cheap usb power ports may run into issues.
I'd love to see a solution for android but I don't think one exists.

Actually the HTC battery Widget will show you if you are on AC (1A) or USB (500ma) charge. You can get this widget from the market (not sure why it is not included in the phone in the first place).
I think that the grounding pin is likely the trick and I will be searching the web to see if I can locate it. I have an older battery pack from APC that can output 1.6A but the only way to get the EVO to charge as if it was on "AC" is to use the HTC plug, and then quickly, before the charge light goes out switch to my alternate source. This seems to trick the EVO into thinking that it is still plugged in to the official charger.
This is of course trickier with my car charger, which has been very frustrating - using the phone for navigation and plugged in via usb usually has the battery draining rather than charging!
I wish there was an easy way to fix this, my old phones always attempted to pull as much current as they needed.

My friend uses a 2A charger for his HTC touch pro 2, and it uses the same battery as the EVO if u guys didnt know.
i havent tried it on my evo, but being its from htc too (and uses the same battery)... id expect it to work with that much current.
I currently use a 900mA one in my car, and i do notice that if i use something less than that i tend to get feedback from the audio jack that connects to my cassette player

I opened a car charger and shorted pins 2 and 3, and the phone did show charging over AC (2 and 3 are the data pins, 1 & 2 are power). My multimeter was acting up, so I am not sure whether the EVO is actually pulling more current - it does appear to be charging faster.
If you try this make sure of 2 things:
1. You charger is capable of 1A.
2. If you choose to short the pins on a USB cable make sure this cable never gets plugged in to your PC.

For your Q #1 search the market for Battery Indicator, great simple app that gives you a battery percentage and how long you have been plugged in or unplugged.

[Q] Galaxy S4 won't charge

I should clarify the title by saying that trying to charge this phone is resulting in a number of odd results.
So firstly, I've tried using the wall-mounted AC charger. I then tried using USB on my computer, in 3 different usb ports. The phone was charging perfectly less than 24 hours before this problem began.
I plugged it in as per usual, and it didn't show the little lightning bolt on the batter icon like it should. It wasn't registering that it was plugged in. I tried plugging it into my PC, and it wasn't showing that it was connected via USB. In addition to that, my computer was failing to install the drivers for it. I went back to the AC charger, and tried a few different outlets, including one on a power strip. Nothing worked.
I searched online, and found that other people had this problem, and could only fix it by resetting to factory default settings. One person even had to do it twice to get it to work. So I did this, and it still didn't work. I tried charging my old phone with this Ac charger and cable, and it wouldn't work either. So I thought it must be a fault in the cable. So I dug up the cable (also micro-usb) for my old phone, and tried it. It worked just fine for my old phone, but my S4 still had the same problem, but with something new. It would say "Dock connected" but still not charge.
As of right now, it seems to be charging properly with my new AC mount and old usb cable, but I'm worried that this could happen again. Considering this seems to be a problem for other people too, what should I do about it? Is there some way to prevent this sort of thing from happening? Was it purely the other cable, given the fact that it didn't work with my old phone either? I'm on an extremely tight budget, and this phone is my only way of being contacted for job interviews, so having it in working order is very important. Any advice would be very appreciated!

Yup having the same issues - but i noticed only having charging issues when battery reaches 20% or the low battery notification pops up
it detects that a usb is connected but it wont charge
Solutions:
- dont let it go below 20 which is ****
- some people claim that if you use a 5pin charger instead of the 4pin which samsung includes solves the prob

Mine is a little more serious I think... haven't found a solution like that yet.
I have to connect/disconnect multiple times and it suddenly works.
But between those connects/disconnects it presents multiple problems, it appears on notification bar "Dock Connected", sometimes appears "Dock Connected" and on the notification bar appears "Suggested Apps (Anchoring)", other times it appears "Dock Connected" and the volume bar appears on the screen and stay there freeze (the phone works, but the bar doesn't disappear)... Sometimes the phone starts charging and suddenly stops, other times it says it's charging and if I remove the charger it keeps the charging symbol on the battery icon...
It's completely crazy, gonna take to service I guess.

Have you tried blowing out the usb connector on the phone with a can of compressed air?
If there is a minute piece of dust there it may be shorting something out - error that dock is connected. I know this happens to other phones, there was a big thread about it on the S3 forum. Might be a simple little thing like that...

Unfortunately that doesn't work for me, will send to service, let's see.

Yep, chalk up one more with the same problem!
At first I thought it had something to do with Aviate, a custom launcher from Yahoo (actually a pretty sweet one at that!)
But I guess not.
My work-around is to reboot the phone while connected. It charges fine while turned off and seems to keep charging when booting while plugged in.
Still... this is a stupid work-around and I want this fixed properly.
Any news from any of you guys?

Had this problem today. Suddenly out of nowhere "Dock is connected" message appeared after plugging the charger in and out. Tried to clean out the dock with stick and cotton on the edge. Then turned off and plugged in charger. Problem exists. Phone charges but stops regularly. It is very annoying when you dont know how to fix this kind of problem.
Any new solutions?

Right after this post, I froze the app "battery doctor 4.9.2" using Titanium Backup Pro (you can just uninstall it i guess). Then just plugged charger and now it's already Almost 90% without any interruption.

Amazing! I've dealing with this problem for weeks and internet didn't give me any good answer, but the whole problem was a baterry monitor apk that for some reason was interfiering with the charger. Thank you so much!

I had this problem too and in my case it was a hardware problem. When i start the charging it kept repeating the start proces of charging with the vibration and the grey battery icon(in case the phone was turned off). The battery icon with the green charging light just didn't showed up. I tried many things but nothing helped. I let the phone keep charging for the whole night but in the morning i saw that it didn't charged anyway!
Then i went to a local phone reparation shop(none official samsung) and they knew immediately recognized the problem and it was the usb/charging connector where you plug it in the phone. They fixed it in 1 hour for a cheap price and from then(i think a few months ago) it charges back perfectly. It seems it's a disease with S4's.

In my previous post I was happy thinking that all this charging problems were solved after uninstalling battery apk. But, in fact, my S4 charges very slowly after that incident. I have tried two other samsung adapters (galaxy s4 mini; grand prime). First one results the same (up to 5 hours charging), the latter was comparably shorter (up to 3 hours), but still slower than it used to be (2 hours normally). So I highly suspected the hardware might be the reason. Thank you for your information, now I will also have the phone checked at some local repair shop. And give feedback of course.

You probably got some water damage in your port. What you need to do is clean it. I used pure alcohol and a toothbrush for that. After that I flashed a custom kernel so I could enable fast charge true usb.
That's the reason your phone is charging slowly, it thinks it's connected true usb. So you need to boost the usb charging. After a few charge cycles I could revert back to my standard kernel and the problem was fixed.

Mine S4 got wet last weekend and now i am also getting the " Dock is connected" message when i plug in the charger cable.
I can charge my phone but sometimes while charging i hear the sound go off and on what you hear when unplugging the charger.

I suggest you go buy a new genuine cable for an s4, the s4 does actually require a special cable capable of 2A charge rate otherwise you can end up in all sorts of bother.

Thank you all for sharing tips. I cleaned the port as suggested, then replaced my cable. Now everything is back to normal.

Same problem - galaxy s6
Hi there - same problem, on my 128gb s6. started this morning. Yesterday everything fine, would charge when connected via USB to both laptop and to regular samsung usb power unit. Have now tried 3 different USB cables including the samsung cable, 3 different usb power units and of course tried all 3 cables in laptop usb port. Have checked phone's usb port - clean as a whistle. Have rebooted both connected and unconnected. Started getting 'dock connected' message, now it just wont charge, although starts up fine. I take very good care of the phone, so no water damage or untoward shock damage (never get it wet, never drop it). Remaining battery charge seems to fluctuate between 30% and 40+ %, depending upon whether it's plugged in or not. If I turn it off, then connect usb cable, the phone just reboots, still not charging. I then turn it off and see no green battery charging screen, as I used to seen when connected but turned off. Should I just hard reset and take to repair shop? Still under warranty.

I would return the phone for a warranty repair. Software would not usually prevent the phone from charging when powered off.
As a final test, see if the s6 will charge wirelessly, assuming you have access to a qi charging pad and the s6 has a built-in qi receiver like the North American version of the s6.

Very bizarre battery problem with my Note 4

Really need some help here. Just recently my note 4 has been failing to charge properly. When I plug my charger, it will charge for a few minutes with my official Samsung Charger but it will stop even with that. It will not charge at all connected to my laptop or my in car charger. This is what I have done so far..
1) Have bought a new battery (phone is 2 years old) New battery made no difference.
2) Have cleaned the hell out of the bottom connector on the phone (does nothing)
Not sure what else it can be. I love this phone and dont want to get rid but cant understand what is wrong.
So new battery, clean connectors, several re starts, taking out cleaning the sim and everything in the phone. What the hell else could it be??

1.Open dialer and dial *#0228# and press (quick start)at the bottom and hit YES this will reset battery stats and clear and battery calibration issues then turn off your phone and charge full to 100% to recalibrate battery stats.
2.if the 1st method dosent works then Try factory reset
3.flash stock firmware in odin.

​Thanks but tried that and it say's 'invalid mmi code.' Tried factory reset as well still no joy. I just don't get it sometime it will charge for 10 minutes then just stop for no reason. Also when phone swtiched off it doesn't charge at all but vibrates intemittently. Any other suggestions? Thanks for your help.

Thanks but I have three different batteries for my Note 4 and they all do this. I fear there is something wrong with the connector in my phone, although it doesn't explain why it will charge for longer sometimes than others, this is what annoys me, its totally random!!! last night I got a full charge out of my phone, today, tried charging and nothing!!!
This is genuine mystery, has my phone got a virus or something?? Why does it charge sometimes then not other times?
I don't want to give up my Note 4 I love the damn thing, any further help would be appreciated with virtual alcohol!

Might be interesting to get one of those Qi wireless charging receivers and a wireless charger to see if it charges correctly that way, bypassing the USB port.
EDIT: I use the Fonesalesman one and a Choetech 3-coil charger.

Hmmm.... that's a good idea, but I thought that the note 4 wasnt capable to charge wireless without an adaptor that that
plugs into the USB port.
I could be wrong though.

I use wireless charging every day, never used the USB port except occasionally to copy large files over and to activate Helium for backup. It does, of course, take longer to charge, but I have a couple of wireless chargers about and just set the phone on whenever I'm near one. Phone rarely drops below 50% charge except if I'm out all day.
You need one of these, once you put the back cover on you'll hardly know it's there - I have a UAG case on too, so it's basically invisible:

Thow i suspect that its other hardware falire..my phone is freezing/restarting without any damn special reason, wireless charge dosent work sometimes, it restarts while wireless charging ...all behaviour having something to do with the Power! i have 3 batteries.
O i think its something to do with hardware, thow i will test flashing a stock room again just to be sure. if nothing above helps u can do the same then if problem still remains so you need to take it to a repair shop.

Very annoying problem and one that frustrates me because its random! I got it charging for 25 minutes tonight before it, all of a sudden for no reason stops at 44%....
However I today received an external charger that I bought of eBay for a mere £5.99 it's great. Although it means I have to keep swapping batteries, it's by far the most cost effective solution. Until I see a phone that is a significant leap above the Note 4 I refuse to upgrade which, quite frankly the S.7 isn't...

Slow charge with original charger

i'm new here and i'd be glad if someone can help me. So i got my phone a month ago and i noticed that while its charging (with the original charger) and while using it in the same time it almost does not charge at all, still when it's not used it does actually fast charge. As a previous samsung user, i never had this issue with samsung phones (they always fast charged even on heavy use).
That's one problem, the second one is scrolling isn't smooth. Yet my internet speed is 1GB at home although i don't see it related, overall scrolling let's say for example Facebook, snapchat, browser, it gets slow at few times and it ain't smooth like i expected it to be.
My device isn't even rooted so i haven't messed with it anyhow, running usual diagnostics and clearing apps regularly, downloaded just few social media apps so no heavy games on the phone but still i can't figure out if it's just my phone or is it the lg g6 like that.

1st i wanted to mention maybe the problem is your outlet in house but, yes G6 is charging slower when you use it on your charger.. And when it comes to fast charging to mine it tooks 1h and 40min from 0-100% bit slower than competiton models, but again fast enough.
When it comes on smoothness i am on V10T EU update and the phone has no laggs at all. It did had on past versions. But with this V10T i hadn't had any smoothness issue.. It really is great, and for playing with the phone while charging i wouldn't recommend that. It can really take effect on your battery.

The scrolling lag sounds like there might be something making the phone work hard. Heavy usage would also make it charge more slowly than expected, because some of that power is going to operate the phone rather than into the battery. BUT I don't think it would prevent the "fast charging" text on the display.
It is remarkable how badly-behaved apps can be - I'd remove/disable your apps one at a time and see if one of them is responsible.

Try a fully compliant aftermarket quick charge 3.0 charger, it should charge much faster. Unlike a QC 3.0 charger, the charger bundled with the phone does not include 12V charging mode, so it's not allowing the phone to charge as fast as the phone can handle (the phone is fully quick charge 3.0 compliant and can charge faster than the bundled charger is capable of doing).

Yup, that's true. BUT I have s7 and g6 and both are slowly charging when I'm using them, phone would get too hot if it would fast charge while using it

Although i noted i dont have any heavy apps or heavy usage, the scrolling lag seems like a lag to me because i got used to faster phones before. Or maybe it is the original cable i need to change as you guys said. Anyway thanks again

I also encountered slow charging problems, but it seemed to be the cable, in some position it worked and in some it did not. I've bought an one plus dash cable for about 10 $, red one, and no problems since then. The cable is more thicker and robust, I highly recommend it.

Hi, I've got this problem: sometimes when I plug my G6 to the charger, a popup message comes out saying:
Charging slowly
Try the following if charging is slow:
- make sure to completely remove any water or debris from the USB ports.
- reconnect both ends of the cable.
- use the charger and cable that came with the phone.
Sometimes, instead, the phone starts charging normally with fast charging. If that popup comes out and I try to unplug and plug USB cable a couple of times, the phone starts charging again with fast charge.
Sometimes, when the phone is already charging with fast charge, suddenly the phone stops charging for a couple of seconds and starts again (I notice it because of the popup sound that comes if you plug the phone to USB)
I even tried to clean USB port, swapped the original USB cable with Anker cable but still using the original LG charger.
Of course there is no water in the port, otherwise a moist detector message would appear.
Has anyone experienced this problem? Can I solve buying a new charger? I'm afraid USB port might be broken

I did it recently after I upgraded to Oreo but this was happening even before I did reset the phone.

Yeah i found that funny that LG lied and tried to get by on using the chargers from the failed lg G5 shipped with the G6. They only support 2.0 charging so just use the cord and use another 3.0 block or get a portable 3.0 power pack. They are 20 bucks on amazon. Good ones too.

can this be a good charger?

I bought an used G6 without charger but I have a Pixel charger model GL0102 and when I plug the phone I cant see the fast charging notification on the screen. It only say charging.
