tab s5e, does anyone have it except me?! - Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e Questions & Answers

I bought this device 10 days ago. Ok, I know it just started appearing in shops. But, no forum, no reviews nothing...
I am interested of course to debloat it, to install twrp, usual things...
Also, if someone wants to hear real life impressions about device, I am here!
I know it is totally off topic but really couldn't find better place to post this...

I am interested in a comparison between the S5e and the S4 ,my old Asus TF700 is about done and I need a replacement any info would be appreciated.

Unfortunately I have not s4... Screen is superb, and with excellent accuracy. One of best I ever seen, and I have seen most of premium devices. I compared it to tab s2 9.7 which also have excellent accuracy screen in basic mode

I have it. Actually, I got two so far. I have the LTE model. Do you also have issue with wifi? Over the 5ghz is quite slow. My router shows it as 1x1 instead of 2x2 like my old tab s 8.4. Since is the second one (got the first one replaced) with the same issue this migh be either a batch hw issue or a firmware issue. Unfortunately every review out there was on a wifi only model, so also a firmware bug might be involved

If I underground your good, to check wifi speed?
My is also 4g...

The first one is my old Tab S 8.4. 5ghz and using full 2x2 of MIMO.
Google home Mini, standard 5ghz, 1x1, more than enough.
Then the S5e, just 1x1 and with really really bad speed.
Last my XZ1 Compact, full 2x2.
From the same position and distance from router, both my Tab S 8.4 and smartphone are way faster and with a much stabler connection. The S5e is slowe by a significant amount and lose connection after i move it too far where with both my old tablet and my phone i never had any issue whatsoever

I just got mine last night. I would definitely like root, twrp, etc. We need a device forum here.
To debloat it, I used Package Disabler Pro from the Play Store. There are quite a few threads om Samsung devices that say what is safe to disable.

I had it for a couple days. Good for the money. But tab S4 the better tablet still. And the s5e was way too thin. It will warp or bend very easily

I also use 5ghz, I will see tomorrow...
I also done some debloat. It feels to me that one ui is a little heavy for 4gb of ram, debloat is highly needed

I received the Wifi version yesterday. Haven't debloated anything and android 9 is running pretty smooth on the device. Was happy to see they included a usb-C type adapter to use corded headphones. I know this was a deal breaker for some users. I traded in my unused S9+, paid the difference and bought this one to replace my 2016 Tab E 9.6 that I use with my Phantom 3 Advncd drone. There is really no comparison in sound, picture, camera quality. The GPS and Wifi range are also better on this tablet. Well worth the trade imo.

I have tab s4 played with s5e at best buy tonight. Definitely thinner than s4. Screen is nice but performance just basic browsing is no comparison,. Its a low end tablet with a nice screen. Hoping for non e version soon with pen support. Put a case on it and the weight and thickness differences are insignificant. Buy an s4 openbox for 50 bucks more you wont regret it.
Btw my s4 upgraded to pie today.

Quick update about the wifi from Germany:
https://eu.community.samsung.com/t5/Tablets/WLAN-Probleme-beim-Samsung-Tab-S5e-WiFi/td-p/1089947

I have noticed also not full signal on positions invmy flat where mate 20x has max signal (mate is one of best devices in this part, btw). I HAVE only 50mb/s internet, mate achieving about 48, and tab can't exceed 45 in few attempts.
But not drastically worse against mate. Nothing can be detected except numeric tests.
I experienced extremely rare and unexpected problem : can't put my evo plus samsung sd, which of course worked in many devices. I somehow, can't put tray back with card in... It catches somewhere. Strange

I'm chatting with Samsung support and they say they want me to bring the tablet into service. If i do that i think the right word for it would be that i'm screwed. If i do that i can't return it. I won't say this tablet has a faulty design, but all evidences point in that direction.
A damn Exynos 5420 from 2013 beats this Snapdragon 670 in connectivity, and this isn't supposed to happen.

I have the tab s4, but seeing the size and weight of the s5e really made me think that it would be a better fit for me. I ended up preordering it just to see how it compared to the s4. The form factor is amazing. I never used the s pen so that wasn't a loss for me. I also have accepted the headphone jack removal and am fine with using my galaxy buds or a USB c adapter. Having a fingerprint sensor for apps is so much better than the iris scanner in the s4. I tried opening up apps on both tablets at the same time and the s4 was slightly faster, but without a direct comparison, this is not something I feel like would be noticeable in everyday usage. As for gaming, I only tested a few games that are not very demanding and did not had any issues.
It's been said before, but it really comes down to your needs and preferences. If you do not need a headphone Jack, the s pen, or play very resource demanding games, I would totally recommend the s5e. I loved the s4, but it's just so nice holding a thin, light tablet while reading, watching movies, etc. And having call continuity between the s5e and s10+ is also extremely convenient (still no idea why this was not added to the s4 with the pie update and was a big reason I started looking at the s5e)
I am likely going to be selling my s4.

Random note. Not important to everyone but there's no haptics on the s5e

I got mine friday. I would like to debloat it as well. Would really like a vanilla Android Pie ROM to put on it. My uses are strictly for watching movies and tv shows. So the performance of the S5e are perfect for my needs.

Can somebody who has both compare the PQ. I read the tab s5e reaches 600 nits where the tab s4 is around 400.
Also why is there no forum for the tab s5e?

That would mean the s5e can get brighter in sunlight over the tab S4 lol

Yes that is correct. It's also lighter and thinner 640 nits

I have the tab s5e and I can verify it can get super bright.

have a 10.1 and 8.9 in my hand, head hurts trying to decide

please go easy on my here, I'm new here. First i have read comparisons, watched reviews, played till my eyes hurt, and I'm no closer to deciding.
First question is the screen orientation lag, how big of a concern should that be?? on the 8.9 landscape on the home screens its clearly visible, portrait is smoother. seems to be the opposite for the 10.1. should this be a big deal in deciding ?? the form of the 8.9 feels lighter and better to me, but i can get use to either i think. its my first tablet, both are 16g, one say was 400, the other 450$ i have 14 days to decide, so looking for opinions or tips to help me compare and decide.
am i splitting hairs ?? for videos, most of mine are say 10g mkv files so i would convert them anyways to a hardware accelerated format the tabs like.
love both but my phone looks small as hell now, heh. (epic 4g touch)
thanks so much for the time,
Joel
Keep both
I'm gonna be picking up an 8.9 soon as I can't decide between a 10.1 or 8.9 either. But the thing I love about my 10.1 is I know like the 10.1 I will want to use the 8.9 in landscape mode more than portrait mode, which is where the 8.9 struggles. Also aftermarket and development have not caught up yet and I'm waiting to see if it ever will.
People haven't really jumped on the 8.9 like I thought they would.
Also waiting to see how the aftermarket and dev take off for the Xyboard (I hate that name), as I played w/ an 8.2 yesterday at the VZW store and love the look and size. Nice departure in the looks department from all the other tabs.
I guess Moto proved to Crapple that indeed all tabs do not have to be square or rectangular in a sense.
I've read the 8.9 stutters more than the 10.1 in playing some videos. Try it out
Do you have kids at all? I find that the 10.1 is a touch too big for them to use in a really ergonomic way, but the 7 inch tablets are just a little too small as a full size unit for them. I'd personally go for the 8.9, but only because I'd prefer that size for ebook reading in bed. I just LOVE the backloght for that. Landscape keyboard usage, even with thumb keyboard is a little stretched out for my not-so-manly tech writer hands.
Man.... now I'm wishing I had an 8.9 over my 10.1!
Sent from my GT-P7510 using Tapatalk
Do you plan on using it a lot in portrait mode for things like reading? Even on the 10.1 text shrinks tremendously so it would be even worse on the 8.9. Something to think about.
I have a 8.9 and I really enjoy this tablet. The size is great for reading in portrait mode, not heavy at all. And I do not find that the screen lags. I have a 10.1 and it is big, this feels like reading an oversize book.

First post for me here, yay! Hi all!
The only reason I bought a 10.1 and not an 8.9 was just for the support base, seems modding is more common for the 10.1 to me, but i am new so may be wrong.
Also seems to be more accessories available on eBay etc.
well, played with the 10.1 yesterday on the sofa and it still feels a tic heavy.
one thing i did notice was that the extra screen i wasn't resizing nearly as much as i did with the 8.9.
the other thing is the screen rotation, thats the hard part for me. the 10.1 feels so smooth in landscape, smoother than the 8.9 in that mode. forum surfing and stuff seems smoother. can that be?? if i rotate them both, then it seems like the opposite is true. the 8.9 gets smoother. not sure if others have seen that or I'm making this too tough for myself. videos seemed similar on both, hardware acceleration was much much better than software.
thanks again for the time,
Joel
my 8.9 is 3.2 and 10.1 is 3.2 if that makes any difference
Let me know if you are thinking of selling one of them.

I had the same dilemma a couple weeks back. I had actually ordered the 8.9 but then cancelled later that day in favour of the 10.1.
My biggest reason is that I did not want to feel short-changed when viewing any type of media. As you suggested, more resizing of screens will be required with 8.9.
I'm a pretty big guy with good sized hands...in the end, the size difference in hand was not all that great to me. If you have lady hands, you may want ther 8.9!!!
Good luck with your decision.
Hi, I have the archos 7it 7inch tab (yes I know its a lot smaller than a 8.9inch) I choose this version over the 10.1inch tab and boy did i regret it, I would be at collage seeing people with here bigger screens and how I had to resize everything. In the end I really regretted not getting the bigger one. But now I have the galaxy tab 10.1 and I can't Imagen having a tablet any smaller than it.
In my opinion I would say to you to stop and think, would you have even the slightest big of regret if you bought either one of the tablets, as you pay a lot for these tabs, and you deserve to feel nothing but pride and joy at having one.
first, thanks so much for the time and help. much appreciated.
i am keeping the 10.1, the breaker for me was the damn rotated screen on the 8.9. everything in landscape was jerkier than the 10.1 was. software versions were different, but i cant hold hope with my return policy running out.
90% might be couch surfing, size and weight wont be an issue. if they were identical it might be tougher but that 90deg screen killed it for me. plus this is my first tab, need to get my feet wet somewhere.
I have both the 10.1 and the 8.9 (well my wife has the 8.9). I myself prefer the 10.1. Like you, the stutters on the 8.9 get on my nerves. Even with it rooted running a custom ROM on 3.2, and a custom overclocked kernel, it still occasionally stutters, not like stock though. The 8.9 was definitely thought out to be a portrait tablet. I do prefer the ppi on the 8.9 screen, but I'll take the buttery smoothness of the 10.1 any day! Running this with Galaxy Task 10 and Pershoots latest kernel is golden!

I couldn't decide. Admittedly, I'm a gadget freak, and this is extreme, but this was the result of my love of the Galaxy Tab and massive amounts of indecision:

You're doing exactly what I'm on a quest to do. Would have helped if I didn't buy the SGT 10.1 twice lol....first time on first day release price (I think I was up in the 6 to 700 range for that one....32GB wifi model)
W/ that said I've really taken a liking to the 8.2 Xyboard. That thing is just perfect and the rounded corners really are pleasing to hold.

So with both 8.9 and 10.1 running custom ROMs (hopefully same version of Overcome ROM), are you saying that 10.1 is smoother in landscape, not just in launcher, but in browser, etc.? I have 4 days left to return my 8.9, and have been wondering lately if I should keep it or try something a little smoother... I have Overcome ROM and OC Kernel at 1.4GHz on my 8.9, but it's still nowhere near my wife's iPad 2 as far as smoothness. However I really like the size and weight of it...
Having tried pretty much every tablet out there, including a Transformer Prime that I returned, I'm sticking to GTs right now. I'm just a little scared of the oil slick problem that a lot of 10.1 owners have reported...
Unless you get an old one, the 10.1 oil slick problem is taken care of. I bought a 10.1 on the first day of release and never had the problem (I chalk it up to being lucky). I bought another 10.1 back a month or so ago and have had no problems. If you do get one with the defect, Samsung will fix it.

The 10.1 to me is smoother than the 8.9. Your right though, as far as how it feels in hand, I do really like the size and weight of the 8.9. It's very well balanced.
As for getting a 10.1 now with the oil slick issue, I think it's a thing of the past unless you get it from some store that doesn't sell very many. And even then it's still would be a hit or miss...

Ok, I have to admit, I don't understand it. 8.9 supposed to have the same guts as 10.1, save for screen orientation. I really like the size and feel of 8.9, but I've heard from more than one person that 10.1 just feels faster. How is that possible? What makes 10.1 faster?? Tomorrow, 14th, is my last day to return/exchange my 8.9, and I really don't know what to do... I could certainly use a smoother experience, at least with the browser, but playing with the 10.1 at the store vs my Overcome ROM with 1.4GHz kernel 8.9, mine is more responsive...
Well, I went back to BB yesterday, and being stubborn and not wanting to spend more than $400, I exchanged my GT 8.9 for Asus Transformer. Got it home, and the build quality is nowhere near GT, the screen seemed a lot less sharp and on top of it, the volume and power buttons were really hard to press and out of alignment.
I then checked BB website today, and lo and behold, the 10.1 is back on sale for $50 off, plus $20 gift card. Went back to the store and exchanged it for a nice and shiny 16Gb GT 10.1. I turn it on at home, start playing with it, and there is a damn dead pixel smack in the middle of the screen. It's tiny, barely visible unless looking at it straight on, but of course now that I know it's there, I am seeing it every time I look at the screen. Now I gotta go back AGAIN and exchange it...
Thanks for listening, I just wanted to vent. My wife thinks I'm nuts, but I haven't had a dead pixel in ages on any device I've owned. Of course it had to happen on the one I wanted to keep...

Totallyyy heavily confused between s3 and note ! !

Hey guys i need your help urgently ! !
I am in a big trouble of buying a smartphone. My 2 choices are galaxy s3 and note.
these are the points that i like about each:-
galaxy s3:-
1.Best performance
2.Lots of added features
3.one of the best camera with burst mode too
4.Great battery life
5.WOLFSON
galaxy note:-
1.bigger better screen imo(its brightness is about 100 cd/m2 more than s3)
I know that s3's ppi is better but that mere 15ppi doesnt mean anything to me
2.Its by far much better looking than s3
3.spen
My main reason for loving the note more than the s3 is its SCREEN.Its sooo bigger and hence better for browsing, gaming, movies etc.
So here my maib questions are:-
1.Is the performance soo much better on s3 than note, specially the gpu?
because i love gaming and the gpu performance is what i need the most ! !
2.I heard and have seen that the ui of s3 so fluent that its now on par with iphone? Then how will be the ui of note?
3.how will be the browser comparision between s3 and note?
I am in hurry for gettibg one because in india we have some offer for note,in which samsung gives sennhieser headphone, flip cover,3000(60usd) games totally for free and this offer experies on 31st may.So what to choose?Even the note 2 will be launched in may be september,so is buying note good idea?
so plzzzzzz help meeeeeeee. . ... ...
thankx to all in advance....

So true lol
Get note if u want a larger screen and the fns of an s pen
Else go for s3
once you use the note you cannot go back to a smaller screen. if you ain't used to the note's screen, go with the s3, it's much better spec'd. you'll need it!
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA
For gaming, the S3 or xperia play (i love mine)
For anything else, galaxy note.
(I think they have the same camera hardware, and software features will probably be ported.)
According to several reviews, all too often you won't even feel the benefit of the quad cores on the s3. It has same pentile Amoled type screen as Note (except it is much larger on Note). Plus, this whole 'inspired by nature' thing just seems a little too desperate a marketing technique for me (imho). I would go for the Note.
Best idea maybe would be to maybe have a half hour play with both in a highstreet store when s3 is released, to make your own mind up...before choosing the Note ;-)

If you can wait get the s3, if you want something now the Note is awesome. I'd love to have one.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using XDA
Well if you're considering the S3, why not through the HTC One X into the equation?
Although I love the idea of having the best specs, I doubt I would be able to tell the difference in terms of CPU (HTC One X and S3 being QUAD core) and RAM as all of the devices seem quite comparable and I haven't noticed any QUAD optimised apps yet, so I would think the user experience for me would be more important.
For me, personally, it comes down to mainly the following:
1. Cost (The Galaxy Note is a bargain right now - I paid £550 in November 2011)
2. Screen Size (I love the Notes Screen and don't think I could go any smaller)
3. UI and Battery Life (From my experience HTC smart phones have crap battery!!! I have owned a HTC Desire, HTC Desire HD and a bag of pre-Android HTC phones)
4. Longevity of the Device (Life-span for updates eg. although the Galaxy Note came out on GB I still bought it because I feel that it will continue to be supported for a while due to the device being an important milestone for Samsung. I'm hoping to get two updates out of the Note and when it stops being supported officially, I'm sure there will be some unofficial updates, or I trade-in for a Galaxy Note 2!!!)
It really depends what you prefer, or how you prefer things to be done with the device.
For me the only upgrade for the Note would be the Note 2, as the S3 which was very tempting for me too (some special features, Quadcore (just because I'm a bit freakish 'bout hardware and not because I really need it ^^) in the end has no S-Pen (bad for me, I hate browsing the internet without it) and is too small (tried that size and I don't want anything smaller than 5,3 inches). Also I do not need the new hardware as I don't play 3D-games or other intense graphics stuff with the device, and the CPU/GPU of the Note is far away from limiting anything for me.
This is from the perspective of someone who owns a note and is not looking to buy SGS3.
Wait until you can have a "hands on" play with the SGS3. For me, I can't see the benefits of the processor so I won't buy one.
However - I am frustrated with the note's ability to play back movies. I am not really a person who uses the note much for watching media... but the black clipping issue frustrates me nonetheless.
If I was an avid movie/tv watcher, the issues with the note would be unacceptable.
In summary:
a) wait to play with SGS3 and get comments on video playback quality.
b) if you are a movie/audiophile, buy SGS3 if video playback is good.
c) if not, buy the note.
The note is a like a drug. If you use it, you will NEVER use a smaller screen again... so your big decision here is, do you want your friends saying, "Yo, pull your laptop out and bring up those pics you took" Lol. I think its by far a great phone, and spec wise, I play lots of games on it, its probably not "as" smooth for gaming as what the sgs3 will be so if that's a big deal you might lean that way, but everything else...note rules.
Get the Note if you are comfortable with the size of this device.

I don't see any reason to get confused at all. First of all how could you compare a product which is selling currently(whose performance is well known) with a product yet to be released(whose performance is not known)?. Both of them maybe from same company but targeted at different category of people. If your aim is to update yourself with the latest gadget in the market no matter what then you may go for S3....If you need a phone which can satisfy your needs then that's a different question....Note is for people who need a smartphone with extended options of a tablet but don't want to carry a typical tablet in their brief case.....But once you get used to it all other phones look like cute little toys to you.....I can surely bet that Galaxy Note can handle all high end graphics games, high quality video streaming etc etc and you will just love its performance...Obviously a bigger screen means better visibility, more details on the screen etc etc...So now you decide and act....Best of luck...
go 4 note !
hi mate
i waited for months before buying my note as i was waiting 4 s3 launch
man i bought my note just after seeing s3 live release on facebook
see we dont need quad core processors right now dual core s enough, i might have opted for s3 if it had a 12mp cam but its cam is still same as note's
and plz keep this in mind if it uses camera to see your eyes movement then its gonna take lot of battery which is 2100 mah compare to note's 2500 mah (sorry if m wrong)
plus the biggest problem is its ugly design... man note is sexy
the only plus option is quad core and nothing else..rest everything is software based like there was siri on 4s (not worth updating)
if u wanna wait for note 2 its ur choice but u never knw they might give note 2 same design as they gave to s3
and yeah i got my headphones they are good
regards
yeh s3 looks amazing, but i rather wait for note 2 with those all features and screen size will be same or even a bit bigger
The key word is "in a hurry"... so if 90% of the ppl ask u to buy s3, u will give up the promo? C'mon... u had ur answer yourself already...

I own 3 phones, note, xperia play and an x10 mini pro (running CM9).
I can still use smaller screens...

Here is a video comparison of the Note and the s3.

From GTab 10.1 to Nexus 10

Well, I decided to take the plunge. I have upgraded and moved on to the Nexus 10. This tablet has been good to me for the last 18 months, but I don't want to rely on rooting to have the latest software and sometimes there's just a little bit of lag that's upsetting. And I'm just not a fan of TouchWiz.
Tablets aren't as important to me as the smartphone that I am carrying, but I think this upgrade will last me a long long time. So it was worth it.
I haven't heard or read about many people here talking about the Nexus 10 yet*. Should I assume that everyone is just content with the Galaxy Tab 10.1? How much longer do you guys see yourself with it?
* Edit: let me clarify since this was not understood. Many forums talk about the "next" device to move on to. For example, the Galaxy Nexus forum had lots of talk going on about "should I upgrade to the Nexus 4?" There really was no 10" Nexus tablet, and it seems our device (10.1) is the logical precursor (Grandparent?) to the Nexus 10, which seems to be a GTab 2 10.1 on steroids.
Edit #2: See my post on page two with a full comparison now that I have both devices.

It was a little bit of "I got my brand new toy", please understand him...
But the OP was right... there are not so many Nexus 10 users here.... in the Galaxy Tab forum.
Sorry, for being off topic... but I don't see the topic.
How do you guys not understand the original post. I am specifically asking Galaxy Tab users, not users of any other device, if they plan on upgrading.
The Galaxy Tab has now been around for a long time. It seems this might be the next logical step for some of you. Or does the Galaxy Tab do everything you need still?
I really only got the Nexus 10 after the Nexus 4 was sold out and I wanted to walk away with something. But I'm still happy about the upgrade. Though I could have used the tab quite a bit longer.

Just ignore it.. I understood your post just fine.
To answer your post. I moved on to the N7.. I purchased my 16GB version then two weeks later the 32GB was released and I exchanged it out. I haven't looked back since.. My Galaxy Tab sits on my TV stand and has been there for weeks now with an uptime of 445 hrs (just checked) and a screen on time of 5 minutes.. It's literally a paperweight. I tried to use the tab as just an e-reader but.. Seriously.. The Tab 10.1 sucks.. Once you use a real tablet on real hardware that isn't crippled and under-performing the flaws, lag, stuttering and slowness we already knew about the Galaxy Tab 10.1 are just heightened to the point you want to smash it.
So yes.. I moved on. I would buy the Nexus 10 if I had a need for a 10 inch but after using the N7.. I no longer want a 10 inch tablet.. For me the 7inch form factor is perfect.
BTW Congrats on your purchase and welcome to the Nexus family! Home of prompt updates straight from Google and pure AOSP support right out of the gate.. You'll never buy a non-Nexus device again

I'm not yet satisfied with the Nexus 10, perhaps I'll go for google's next 10inch tablet, though I might get a N7 before then, but I think I'd miss the larger sceen (a more likely scenario is that somebody else in the household would be the primary user)
P.S. Actually, maybe I would get it if I wasn't getting the N⁴, but two new devices is probably)too much for me atm, and (for me) the N10 definitely doesn't justify it.
Well I thank the last two users for "getting" it. That's all I was asking for, the perspective of 10.1 users.
To me the N10 advantages over the 10.1 are:
AOSP - No Touchwiz! (or Rooting needed)
Prompt Updates
Resolution makes reading a joy
Lag free on the A15 Cortex.
Doesn't look like an iPad
Lightweight but apparently a very sturdy, industrial design
If I DID choose to root and ROM, a bigger community because it's a Nexus(?)
Standard MicroUSB Charging connection
These things are a wash:
Cameras? Meh. Never use them anyway.
Battery life? I've never had any opinion of the 10.1's battery life. It's not a smartphone that I am constantly using so it last me several days in-between charges. I'm sure the N10 will be the same.
Design and looks: The 10.1 probably does look better? Though, more Appleish. So it's about even.
I honestly wanted to find more reasons why keeping the 10.1 makes sense. And as far as a point-by-point argument, the Nexus 10 wins hands down. But that doesn't really matter because it depends on how you are using a tablet. To me, a tablet is always secondary to my smartphone. I use it far less. The Browser, Email, Google Reader, scan the news apps. That's mostly it. I don't play games. I don't video chat. So really, even though I think the Nexus 10 is far superior, the 10.1 did most of what I wanted just fine. So I can't blame anyone for keeping the 10.1 (unless you're still using it on Stock TouchWiz 4.0, where it is soo laggy, etc? My Jelly Bean ROM has been fantastic!). If you don't like to root to "fix" things, but you are a heavy tablet user, than I'm thinking you probably are looking to upgrade--which goes back to the original question: Is the Nexus 10 good enough? I guess I'll see in a couple days... I'll probably post back some comparisons later.

This.. This is why I am no longer interested in a 10inch.
Before I had my N7 as you said my phone would be my go to device and my Tab was second fiddle.. It was big, not very portable and kind of awkward to use in most circumstances unless you were just flipping through a book or something. Now.. Ever since I got my Nexus 7.. My phone is second fiddle.. The N7 form factor is like a phone on steroids.. Larger enough to make reading, gaming, app use and browsing much easier but small enough where it doesn't feel like you're Fred Flintstone holding a slab in your hands either.
This is ultimately the reason my Galaxy Tab has fall to the way side entirely and also my phone.. The 7 inch form factor is the perfect combination between phone and tablet..

I never needed a tablet but I liked my TAB (especially since ICS). But the Nexus 7 really hit the spot: now I feel I DO need to have a tablet around. For me (old eyes and all), the 10 inch screen is a bit better for classic WEB browsing (and a lot better as a remote to my PCs), but the format and weight of the N7 makes it the "go to" device for anything but "work stuff".
I thought a lot about the N10 these past couple of weeks, but in the end I passed (and I still have the TAB: not worth the hassle of selling at this point; I'll use it intermittently until I find a potential Android recruit to recycle it to). I think I may wait for the Nexus 8 (lighter, much thinner bezel, high ppi... and able to replace any and all of my remotes).
P.-S. --- The N7 fits in the pockets of my hoodies: no X10 would!
I have a wifi tab 10.1, a 4G tab 7.7, and a GS3.
I use the 7.7 and GS3 far more than I use the 10.1. Probably use the 7.7 the most. It's portability and the 4G give it an advantage over the 10.1 while the larger screen gives it an advantage over the GS3. I'd love to get a N10, but it's more because I love gadgets than any real need for it. I'd love the S Pen functionality of the Note 10.1, but wish it was quad core... And obviously the N10 doesn't have this. So the primary draw of the N10 is the display and the prompt updates since it's a reference device.
If I had the money, I'd probably get a N10...though Engadget wasn't terribly impressed by it. I may try to get my hands on a Note 10.1 cuz the S Pen functionality would make it a good tool for work.
Never been impressed by the N7. The screen feels narrow and its fat/heavy. I'll happily exchange the quad-core processor for the thin, light design and AMOLED screen of the tab 7.7.

What exactly do you mean by "pocket" here? The two hand thing? If so, how tall are you/what size do you where? I'm not a big person and I've gotten my gt10.1 in there :S
I have been looking at many of the next tablets being offered by most of the companies. The Nexus 10 is tempting, but I DO use the camera for some things, and the 10 inch screen is important to the main function for which I bought a tablet. I tried the 7 inch units and they're just too small for my needs. I use my tablet for a moving-map display and electronic flight-bag while I'm flying. I actually use an app that does a split-screen and shows me charts and flight data at the same time. The 7-inch was just too small for that. I had a Transformer Prime for a while and really liked the display and operational speed, but the lack of a functional wifi and GPS took that out of the picture in a hurry. For the moment, the Tab 10.1 still does the job. But I am looking.
I have used my Nexus 10 all weekend and can now compare it with the G Tab 101.1
GTab 10.1 vs N10
Screen:
N10 pixels/resolution obviously blows the GTab 10.1 away; but it seems like the N10 screen is more washed out compared to the deep colors of the GTab.
Speakers:
Maybe it's my hearing, but the GTab seems to have louder sound
Performance:
Oh my, not even close. The Exynos 5 in the N10 poops on the Tegra 2. FINALLY Android does not have any lag. Whereas the GTab hails from Lag City. (Rooting and Roming obviously helps).
Cameras:
Even? I took pic's, I skyped, saw no difference.
Build quality:
The N10 does not feel like a Samsung device. The GTab feels like a Toy in comparison. Though it feels much lighter (even though the specs say they are closer) so some may prefer that.
Software:
The GTab requires you to root it for decent performance. Or you can have full functionality to go along with lagginess and TouchWiz. The N10 is a Nexus. A full working 4.2. Yes it's new so there are bugs, but thankfully Samsung does not handle updates.
Battery:
More or less even. MAYBE the GTab 10.1 has a slight, slight edge? not sure yet.
Extras:
N10 has an HDMI port I probably will never use. Though it does have a notification light which is really helpful. Neither have SD's. I am fan of the wide bezels on the N10 because my thumb does not cover the screen.
Conclusion:
I feel like the N10 is so much better, but really, the GTab 10.1 did most of what I needed and did it "ok" to "well". The N10 just does it a little quicker. And it's nice to know I don't have to root it to be satisfied. So on those levels it is worth it. Otherwise, if you can not afford it, there is no reason why you need to be an early adopter. I think many GTab 10.1 users may end up getting the Nexus 7 instead as that is become standard for many hard core Android users. If you watch tons of videos, then the N10 is highly recommended. If you can not tolerate TouchWiz and rather not mod the device, also get the N10. For everyone else? No rush.
The N10 is 1.5 years newer.. It should smoke the 10.1
I'm dying to replace the tab with a new device, before the N10 I was considering the Asus TF700 but I'll only jump ship when one of them deliver a 3G option, I seriously don't get why the don't release mobile data versions in tandem of Wi-Fi only option.
But I suspect and hope Google bring it out soon, I don't think Asus will do now, not now the infinity has been out for so long.
Swyped, from my finger to your face, on my Samsung Galaxy Note II
I will try to present a slightly different view. Before I was forced to get my Samsung 10.1, I had a 10.1v which I truly think is a much better device than the plain 10.1. Eventually I will cannibalize my 10.1 to get my 10.1v working again.
My new tablet has to have the following features: 10" screen, 3G, quad-core and preferably a pen too. Such a device is still some ways from hitting the market and until such a time, I guess I'm content with my 10.1.
I have a 4.7" phone so there is little point for me getting a less than 10" tablet. Call it due to my older eyes but for me 10" is a very comfortable size, I don't even miss my notebook as I also have a Logitech BT keyboard. I have no problems carrying the tablet. I can understand that it comes down to a personal choice where screen size is concerned, for me the big screen just makes it easier to work with the device.
I did root my tab as it makes me uncomfortable that I can't even make a decent backup without a root. If I can put JB on my 10.1, it would definitely delay a new device
I really want to get the Nexus 10, but I currently only use my Galaxy Tab 10.1 for infrequent browsing and even less frequent Angry Birds Star Wars. I may get the Note 10.1 for my wife because she really wants the stylus---oops, I mean the S-Pen.
If Google adds a native Android feature allowing two apps to run side-by-side (like the Note, but implemented better), I'd buy the Nexus 10 tomorrow.
For now, I'll keep puttng up with the mild lag of the GTab 10.1.
I am buying a Nexus10 32Gb (it should arrive Monday) but I also have been very happy with my 10.1 GT-7510 (aka p4wifi). I have been running the following JellyBean 4.1.2 ROM for almost 2 weeks now without any problems.
Make a nandroid, then install:
AAcount's TWRP 2.3.2.3: recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1833136
Make another backup with TWRP if you were coming from ClockworkMod (paranoid)

Formula84's JZ054K Gapps: http://goo.im/devs/Formula84/gapps-jb-20121012-4.1.2-JZO54K
Reboot, set everything up (I use Titanium Backup Pro)
then install AAccount's A1 kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1833136
Go into AOKP performance tab and select 1.6Ghz OC or 1.5Ghz if you're conservative.
Win!!
Install "voodoo sound" sound control panel for amazing audio quality
Install Dice or MX Player with the appropriate Tegra 2 codecs and you'll be able to play virtually any 720p video without lag.
Install Dolphin Browser with Flash and Jetpack for Desktop Browser experience and install Chrome for mobile browser experience.
Everything works great. Google Now works, front and rear cameras work as well. It will take an hour the first time through, but I think you will be super happy with your Tab. This could extend the viable life of the 10.1 for another 6-12 months until the next big thing comes along.
(Of course all of this is at your own risk. It works great for me, but might not work so well for anyone else.)
On the Nexus10 front, I can't believe that anyone would buy a 16Gb tablet! If I have a couple nandroids and a few movies or TV show seasons, I'm well above 16Gb. Right now I have <5Gb free on my GTab10.1 and I only have a few games, 1 season of Breaking Bad and about 3 or 4 hours of music on it. This IMO is "minimum" local storage for a week away from home on a business trip. 5+ hour flights are a drag without copious local data.
I'd love to buy a nexus 10, sadly it's not available in Italy, maybe it never will be
that means my money is going to Asus this time, 299$ for 32Gb plus 3g is the best deal out there in my opinion; that said I'll keep my gtab 10,1 to watch movies in case I'm not satisfied with the 7 inch display.
OK, first impressions on the Nexus10 from someone who's been an Android user since the OG Droid and has had a Galaxy Tab 10.1 Wifi for 16 months.
It is a little bit wider and almost exactly the same height and thickness of the p4wifi
The Nexus10 is heavier, 604g vs 558g on my kitchen scale. Its width makes it seems a bit heavier since it puts more torque on your hand if holding it one handed.
The buttons are in the same orientation as the p4wifi
The buttons on the Nexus10 are slightly further to the left than on the p4. This leads me to accidentally hit the power button more since I'm used to being able to grab the tab by that corner safely
The buttons are lower-profile and seem a bit chintzy compared to the p4
The Nexus10 screen is warmer and a bit "dimmer" than the p4. I think the p4 actually has slightly better contrast. This is a subjective judgement. I'm using automatic brightness on both. Although the stock auto-brightness stinks. I need to get AOKP installed on the Nexus10 and tweak the brightness.
Nexus10 does indeed poop on the p4 from performance perspective. It is like night and day even running the Stock Nexus 10 versus highly overclocked and tweaked p4.
I haven't auditioned the headphone out yet. Will get some high-bitrate music on here and try it out soon.
It looks better in person than in the pictures. I think in the pictures that the roundedness of the Nexus10 looks unattractive, but in person it is fine.
I am very dissappointed with how few accessories have been announced so far. I suppose this isn't surprising, but I would really like a bluetooth keyboard case for it. The Logitech ZAGG case for my p4wifi, of course, doesn't fit at all.
My very cheap "Acase" flip case ALMOST fits. It is very snug due to the extra width. I think with a little Xacto knife action, I'll have a usable but not ideal case. The speaker holes aren't too far from the charging port.
My wife actually prefers the p4 for reading books as the Nexus10 is "too small". At least on Google Play (I haven't played with Kindle Reader yet) this is not merely a matter of zoom level. For example the free "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" the pictures of the Rabbit are about 2x the size on the p4 as on the Nexus10. I assume this is because the Play Store hasn't been fully adapted for high-dpi devices yet.
The p4 would slowly charge when plugged into USB but the Nexus10 seems to actually lose charge while plugged into USB. Hopefully custom kernels will be available soon with "fast charge" capability.
Well hope that helps somebody make a decision.

Note 3 day one buy features

I've been wondering what, if announced, would make the Note 3 (or any other phone) a day 1 buy for me.
There's always the incremental MORE/LESS stuff - more screen, less weight, blah blah blah
The note 2 is good enough that I don't consider any of that to be a strong selling point.
Has technology/innovation peaked? What features could/would make the Note 3 a 'must buy'
for Note 2 owners (versus the expected 'guess I'll wait for the Note 4)? Or from a business
perspective, would could make people who were uninterested in the Note 3 interested in the Note 2?
I don't think the S4 won over any S3 haters.
The only recent interesting things I've seen are:
wireless charging
unbreakable screen
Metallic body (which I personally don't care about, but it sure is making the HTC One hot stuff)
All of the above I'd love, but nothing I'd sell my Note 2 to get.

I want to go mad with power lol.
Octa Core!
The hardware technology is close to peaking, I think. Flexible screens are just a marketing gimmick for me, and better radios aren't really new tech but refinements of what we already have. Screens are either unbreakable but not unscratchable, or unscratchable but not unbreakable. As for power -- every week we read about how this or that development will give us vastly more powerful batteries (rechargeable in 30 seconds, no less) but the problem is, they've been saying that for the past six or seven years and we're still stuck with the same old Li-Ion technology. Wireless charging still means leaving the phone on some device or other to charge -- only you don't plug it in. Now if my phone's battery would start charging as soon as I walked in the door, I might sit up and take notice.
The only innovations that would give me an incentive to buy a new device (the Note 99, maybe?) on day 1 would be either 128GB or more of storage without a huge increase in price, or a change in Android specs to allow apps to be stored and run from external cards. Not allowing apps to run from external storage has got to be one of Google's more short-sighted ideas, given that each Android iteration, not to mention manufacturer and carrier overlays, seems to eat more and more of available storage space for its own use.

in my country, note 2 now is about 30% cheaper compared to when it was launched. if thats the case in your area and since you are still satisfied with your note2, id wait for a few months until it gets cheaper before buying. as a bonus the official rom you buy might be more stable the the 1st release.
For me, personally, it would have to be a huge increase in onboard storage (I'm thinking 128GB minimum). Also, I would prefer a dedicated micro-HDMI port, instead of crappy MHL. These two things would make me get the GN3 on release day, but if not, I'll stick with my GN2 for the time being.
1080p, Exynos Octa w/LTE, more storage...yeah, I'm probably going to get it at launch. Those are enough to excite me.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
Frontal stereo speakers, Adreno 330, Snapdragon 800, metal body, 1080p 64 GB storage... these things are desirable, but still probably wouldn't buy it... and definately not on day one. Just recently got my Note 2
More likely when I switch, it will be to the Note 4... or perhaps some nice HTC/Sony. Maybe even a Nokia EOS, if such a thing ever breaks free from the rumorland....
I want a note 3 with all s4 features minus lag, screen tint and smearing issues (realistic wish list). It would be enough for a year at least. I would prefer a screen of 5.7 inch max, but it should never go beyond 6.0. The battery should be around 4000MAh. I don't care about body but design at least should not be carbon copy of note 2/s4. The minimum storage should be 32gig.
Larger screen without increasing the body size.
Larger battery, and I don't mind making the body slightly thicker either. For me battery life is more important than have it be under 11mm. I think 12mm is fine.
HD display, without a doubt.
SPen upgrade. I love the current generation, but if they can't make it any better then that'll be fine by me.
Next generation processor which I'm sure will be in there.
An awesome camera This one is good, but not that good. I'd much prefer something better.
I think that's it! If they add on a capacitive home button and an extra gig of ram I'm sold.
Thinner, lighter, better battery, full hd and 13mpix camera at least (or better if they can squeeze it). Battery life is fine with me. Processing power I don't care about anymore (it's plenty enough already).

Nice spam. Reported.
Ill be keeping note 2 if note 3 is just a s4 with a pen and 5.99 inch full hd screen.
Maybe 3 gig of ram?

I am afraid its going to be like this, better not to keep your hopes high, you should follow the prior trend if u want to stay realistic. I dont mind an s4 type phone but it must be morw fluid and minus all the bugs.

I hope I I'm not that bothered about it. Only had note 2 a few weeks and love it! Want it to last till s5 or note 4!

Note 3?
Do you guys really want to struggle with Samsung's rooting/custom kernel issues, flash counters, root trackers, CyanogenMod incompatibilities?
Definitely a phone I will buy, sadly I dont have the money right now and selling somo old phones is not on my plans, so if the note 3 went out today I will have to buy it in October 2014.

Samsung will never set 32gb as minimum storage. They rather will cut it even more (like in galaxy s4).
Have to say I am impressed with my Note2 so far the best Android phone Ive had. Its the only phone I have not had to tamper with to make it faster. I did root it but no custom rom. Never had it die on me, been using it close to a year now and it still amazes me. Awesome device. The Note 3 would have to be significantly better to justify an upgrade. I agree with with what someone hasmentioned already, i believe we have reached a peak now....and only encremental changes will come. Else if they do decide to go all out with the Note 3...we will all be guinea pigs....like with the first samsung galaxy s.with the note 2 we have the perfect balance between battery life and performance. I still carry a spare battery around...just incase.

It needs to have a new design. I won't buy it if it looks too much like my Note 2. Something like the GS4 Active would be awesome.

Yes. Don't really care, to be honest.
Oh - I'm rooted, and happily running a custom rom.

[SPECS] Samsung Galaxy Note Edge Specifications - Members Thoughts.

Hey Guys and Gals
Looks like Samsung is showing off its curved screen technology once again. This time in a smartphone rather than its Gear S smartwatch. The Galaxy Note edge is very similar in respects of hardware to the Note 4, only with a curved edge screen. Its a very interesting design, and getting feedback from those who have tried will be most interesting. So lets take a look at the specifications for the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge. Feel free to comment:good:

feel gimmicky!
Now I just need to decide between this or the Note 4...
The battery in the edge is smaller?
I wonder how the note edge performs in drop tests.. that little screen without metallic frame is dangerous

I'm not sure. I think that if you use a case, you won't be able to see the curve display or it will have to leave the whole side open so that you can.
Different though. Would be interesting to see one in my hand to see what it looks like.

Assuming I eventually move from the Note 3, it would most likely be to the Note 4, but I am not in any hurry to move right now in anycase.

I am also wondering if the Edge can take a hit I heard threw a friend the the oled can take the hit. Also anyone knoe of a release date or are any carriers taking preorders?
I'm more concerned about ROM development (or the lack thereof). As much as I would love to jump on this phone as my new digital companion, I want it rooted and ROMmed. Hyperdrive for the Edge would be straight-up ballin'. If I had some assurance that developers will embrace both the Note 4 and the Note Edge, I'd jump on the Edge in a heartbeat.

Read in another thread the end of October and the 4 and edge are already on the AT&T store as "coming soon".
I wonder how long before the various custom launchers will support this...
Note 4 : 1440 x 2560 pixels, 5.7 inches (~515 ppi pixel density)
Note Edge : 1600 x 2560 pixels, 5.6 inches (~524 ppi pixel density)
The Note edge has a better display?
Looks interesting. However it still has it flaws.
Smaller battery... Ok not a deal breaker but another comprise.
Still cheap plastic... The Note 4 is bad enough with its plastic rear but this will feel cheap to hold.
Touch Wiz... Despite the 3gb ram etc why do Samsungs still lag. The flagship Tab S is awful with lag and was only recently released. I was considering this as my main phone given the presence of a dialler.
Price... Apparently will be more expensive than the Note 4. Well I know it has an extra screen but it should come in at the same price as the Note 4 which although may have a rrp higher or closer to an iphone will usually be cheaper than an iphone after negotiating with your network provider.
Touch Wiz...Are samsung blind? Can the not see that their icons and fonts look rubbish, old and childish. Yes I can overlay it with Nova Launcher but the settings etc still have the rubbish looking font design and layout.
No Android L... With new significant change in os round the corner it probably pays to wait for phones that come out of the box with Android L rather than updated to Android L given the tailored chips and components for the new os and ultra hd screen.
Biggest pro is the high definition Amoled screen.
I owned the Note 1 and 2 and am considering the Note 4 and Edge but I will probably wait one more generation. I hope the next Samsungs come in full metal and less bloatware.
Right Handed Use Only
Has it escaped everyone that this device seems to only support right handed use only? Yea, sure, you can flip it upside-down but then the buttons are against how they ergonomically considered the phone in development.
Just a thought and being right handed, I think it is cool as sh.... Jury is out on if "the gimmick" is worthwhile but yes, at first glance, it seems a little gimmicky until I get one in my hands and imagine how it might help me. Then I may be swayed. Getting either this one or the straight note 4.

What I wonder is how much of a bezel is at the bottom of the side screen? If there is enough meat then they can make a plasticy case that can hug that and protect it just like they would any other screen but what I wonder is, then, with the screen being so narrow, will that protection interfere with actually getting to the screen.
Very intriguing concept though. It is this or the Note 4, for me
Biggest use to me is to have recent apps on the sidebar. Will speed up multi tasking significantly. And not a bar that covers the regular screen. I miss my palm treo hard buttons!

Loved it when I saw it 2 years ago but the Android Wear watches gives me what I wanted from the side scrolling bar. The idea was great that if I am doing something I can still see my messages at a glance and keep working or sports scores, phone calls, etc. Just not sure how much I need that now. It's the same with my Google Glass. My watch can pretty much do everything that it does, minus the camera, so now it just sits and collects dust.

I read that Samsung will be releasing an SDK for the Edge so that developers can make use of the extra bit of the screen.
This reminds me of the Samsung Continuum. Interesting concept for showing notifications or other small apps, but it just seems gimmicky. I really hope a carrier in the United States picks up the Edge so I can play around with one at some point.

I remember reading in the comments of an article (can't remember which one...) about the Note Edge where the author stated he saw people using the Edge both left- and right-handed without issues.
