Hey Guys and Gals
Looks like Samsung is showing off its curved screen technology once again. This time in a smartphone rather than its Gear S smartwatch. The Galaxy Note edge is very similar in respects of hardware to the Note 4, only with a curved edge screen. Its a very interesting design, and getting feedback from those who have tried will be most interesting. So lets take a look at the specifications for the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge. Feel free to comment:good:

feel gimmicky!
Now I just need to decide between this or the Note 4...
The battery in the edge is smaller?
I wonder how the note edge performs in drop tests.. that little screen without metallic frame is dangerous

I'm not sure. I think that if you use a case, you won't be able to see the curve display or it will have to leave the whole side open so that you can.
Different though. Would be interesting to see one in my hand to see what it looks like.

Assuming I eventually move from the Note 3, it would most likely be to the Note 4, but I am not in any hurry to move right now in anycase.

I am also wondering if the Edge can take a hit I heard threw a friend the the oled can take the hit. Also anyone knoe of a release date or are any carriers taking preorders?
I'm more concerned about ROM development (or the lack thereof). As much as I would love to jump on this phone as my new digital companion, I want it rooted and ROMmed. Hyperdrive for the Edge would be straight-up ballin'. If I had some assurance that developers will embrace both the Note 4 and the Note Edge, I'd jump on the Edge in a heartbeat.

Read in another thread the end of October and the 4 and edge are already on the AT&T store as "coming soon".
I wonder how long before the various custom launchers will support this...
Note 4 : 1440 x 2560 pixels, 5.7 inches (~515 ppi pixel density)
Note Edge : 1600 x 2560 pixels, 5.6 inches (~524 ppi pixel density)
The Note edge has a better display?
Looks interesting. However it still has it flaws.
Smaller battery... Ok not a deal breaker but another comprise.
Still cheap plastic... The Note 4 is bad enough with its plastic rear but this will feel cheap to hold.
Touch Wiz... Despite the 3gb ram etc why do Samsungs still lag. The flagship Tab S is awful with lag and was only recently released. I was considering this as my main phone given the presence of a dialler.
Price... Apparently will be more expensive than the Note 4. Well I know it has an extra screen but it should come in at the same price as the Note 4 which although may have a rrp higher or closer to an iphone will usually be cheaper than an iphone after negotiating with your network provider.
Touch Wiz...Are samsung blind? Can the not see that their icons and fonts look rubbish, old and childish. Yes I can overlay it with Nova Launcher but the settings etc still have the rubbish looking font design and layout.
No Android L... With new significant change in os round the corner it probably pays to wait for phones that come out of the box with Android L rather than updated to Android L given the tailored chips and components for the new os and ultra hd screen.
Biggest pro is the high definition Amoled screen.
I owned the Note 1 and 2 and am considering the Note 4 and Edge but I will probably wait one more generation. I hope the next Samsungs come in full metal and less bloatware.
Right Handed Use Only
Has it escaped everyone that this device seems to only support right handed use only? Yea, sure, you can flip it upside-down but then the buttons are against how they ergonomically considered the phone in development.
Just a thought and being right handed, I think it is cool as sh.... Jury is out on if "the gimmick" is worthwhile but yes, at first glance, it seems a little gimmicky until I get one in my hands and imagine how it might help me. Then I may be swayed. Getting either this one or the straight note 4.

What I wonder is how much of a bezel is at the bottom of the side screen? If there is enough meat then they can make a plasticy case that can hug that and protect it just like they would any other screen but what I wonder is, then, with the screen being so narrow, will that protection interfere with actually getting to the screen.
Very intriguing concept though. It is this or the Note 4, for me
Biggest use to me is to have recent apps on the sidebar. Will speed up multi tasking significantly. And not a bar that covers the regular screen. I miss my palm treo hard buttons!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using XDA Free mobile app
Loved it when I saw it 2 years ago but the Android Wear watches gives me what I wanted from the side scrolling bar. The idea was great that if I am doing something I can still see my messages at a glance and keep working or sports scores, phone calls, etc. Just not sure how much I need that now. It's the same with my Google Glass. My watch can pretty much do everything that it does, minus the camera, so now it just sits and collects dust.

I read that Samsung will be releasing an SDK for the Edge so that developers can make use of the extra bit of the screen.
This reminds me of the Samsung Continuum. Interesting concept for showing notifications or other small apps, but it just seems gimmicky. I really hope a carrier in the United States picks up the Edge so I can play around with one at some point.

Hey guys i need your help urgently ! !
I am in a big trouble of buying a smartphone. My 2 choices are galaxy s3 and note.
these are the points that i like about each:-
galaxy s3:-
1.Best performance
2.Lots of added features
3.one of the best camera with burst mode too
4.Great battery life
5.WOLFSON
galaxy note:-
1.bigger better screen imo(its brightness is about 100 cd/m2 more than s3)
I know that s3's ppi is better but that mere 15ppi doesnt mean anything to me
2.Its by far much better looking than s3
3.spen
My main reason for loving the note more than the s3 is its SCREEN.Its sooo bigger and hence better for browsing, gaming, movies etc.
So here my maib questions are:-
1.Is the performance soo much better on s3 than note, specially the gpu?
because i love gaming and the gpu performance is what i need the most ! !
2.I heard and have seen that the ui of s3 so fluent that its now on par with iphone? Then how will be the ui of note?
3.how will be the browser comparision between s3 and note?
I am in hurry for gettibg one because in india we have some offer for note,in which samsung gives sennhieser headphone, flip cover,3000(60usd) games totally for free and this offer experies on 31st may.So what to choose?Even the note 2 will be launched in may be september,so is buying note good idea?

So true lol
Get note if u want a larger screen and the fns of an s pen
Else go for s3
once you use the note you cannot go back to a smaller screen. if you ain't used to the note's screen, go with the s3, it's much better spec'd. you'll need it!
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA
For gaming, the S3 or xperia play (i love mine)
For anything else, galaxy note.
(I think they have the same camera hardware, and software features will probably be ported.)
According to several reviews, all too often you won't even feel the benefit of the quad cores on the s3. It has same pentile Amoled type screen as Note (except it is much larger on Note). Plus, this whole 'inspired by nature' thing just seems a little too desperate a marketing technique for me (imho). I would go for the Note.
Best idea maybe would be to maybe have a half hour play with both in a highstreet store when s3 is released, to make your own mind up...before choosing the Note ;-)

If you can wait get the s3, if you want something now the Note is awesome. I'd love to have one.

Well if you're considering the S3, why not through the HTC One X into the equation?
Although I love the idea of having the best specs, I doubt I would be able to tell the difference in terms of CPU (HTC One X and S3 being QUAD core) and RAM as all of the devices seem quite comparable and I haven't noticed any QUAD optimised apps yet, so I would think the user experience for me would be more important.
For me, personally, it comes down to mainly the following:
1. Cost (The Galaxy Note is a bargain right now - I paid £550 in November 2011)
2. Screen Size (I love the Notes Screen and don't think I could go any smaller)
3. UI and Battery Life (From my experience HTC smart phones have crap battery!!! I have owned a HTC Desire, HTC Desire HD and a bag of pre-Android HTC phones)
4. Longevity of the Device (Life-span for updates eg. although the Galaxy Note came out on GB I still bought it because I feel that it will continue to be supported for a while due to the device being an important milestone for Samsung. I'm hoping to get two updates out of the Note and when it stops being supported officially, I'm sure there will be some unofficial updates, or I trade-in for a Galaxy Note 2!!!)
It really depends what you prefer, or how you prefer things to be done with the device.
For me the only upgrade for the Note would be the Note 2, as the S3 which was very tempting for me too (some special features, Quadcore (just because I'm a bit freakish 'bout hardware and not because I really need it ^^) in the end has no S-Pen (bad for me, I hate browsing the internet without it) and is too small (tried that size and I don't want anything smaller than 5,3 inches). Also I do not need the new hardware as I don't play 3D-games or other intense graphics stuff with the device, and the CPU/GPU of the Note is far away from limiting anything for me.
This is from the perspective of someone who owns a note and is not looking to buy SGS3.
Wait until you can have a "hands on" play with the SGS3. For me, I can't see the benefits of the processor so I won't buy one.
However - I am frustrated with the note's ability to play back movies. I am not really a person who uses the note much for watching media... but the black clipping issue frustrates me nonetheless.
If I was an avid movie/tv watcher, the issues with the note would be unacceptable.
In summary:
a) wait to play with SGS3 and get comments on video playback quality.
b) if you are a movie/audiophile, buy SGS3 if video playback is good.
c) if not, buy the note.
The note is a like a drug. If you use it, you will NEVER use a smaller screen again... so your big decision here is, do you want your friends saying, "Yo, pull your laptop out and bring up those pics you took" Lol. I think its by far a great phone, and spec wise, I play lots of games on it, its probably not "as" smooth for gaming as what the sgs3 will be so if that's a big deal you might lean that way, but everything else...note rules.
Get the Note if you are comfortable with the size of this device.

I don't see any reason to get confused at all. First of all how could you compare a product which is selling currently(whose performance is well known) with a product yet to be released(whose performance is not known)?. Both of them maybe from same company but targeted at different category of people. If your aim is to update yourself with the latest gadget in the market no matter what then you may go for S3....If you need a phone which can satisfy your needs then that's a different question....Note is for people who need a smartphone with extended options of a tablet but don't want to carry a typical tablet in their brief case.....But once you get used to it all other phones look like cute little toys to you.....I can surely bet that Galaxy Note can handle all high end graphics games, high quality video streaming etc etc and you will just love its performance...Obviously a bigger screen means better visibility, more details on the screen etc etc...So now you decide and act....Best of luck...
go 4 note !
hi mate
i waited for months before buying my note as i was waiting 4 s3 launch
man i bought my note just after seeing s3 live release on facebook
see we dont need quad core processors right now dual core s enough, i might have opted for s3 if it had a 12mp cam but its cam is still same as note's
and plz keep this in mind if it uses camera to see your eyes movement then its gonna take lot of battery which is 2100 mah compare to note's 2500 mah (sorry if m wrong)
plus the biggest problem is its ugly design... man note is sexy
the only plus option is quad core and nothing else..rest everything is software based like there was siri on 4s (not worth updating)
if u wanna wait for note 2 its ur choice but u never knw they might give note 2 same design as they gave to s3
and yeah i got my headphones they are good
regards
yeh s3 looks amazing, but i rather wait for note 2 with those all features and screen size will be same or even a bit bigger
The key word is "in a hurry"... so if 90% of the ppl ask u to buy s3, u will give up the promo? C'mon... u had ur answer yourself already...

To sum up what I've posted in the other Note II threads:
It's not a worthy upgrade for the following reasons:
-Lower resolution than Note I
-Still Pentile
-16x9 (I prefer 16x10 on Note I, this is subjective I know)
-Mali 400 GPU (last year tech)
-Exynos 4412 (a15 is already out, iphone 5 will have it)
-Same MP Camera as Note I
-Front camera lower resolution than Note I
What I do like:
-Bigger battery
-More Ram
this is an incremental upgrade and I will wait for the Note III.
Actually, the new screen ratio on the note II doesn't look too bad compare to our old Note. From this picture, compare to the Note II it kinda makes our old Note look like the LG Optimus Vu..lol....
I think they are trying to make the Note II look more like a Smartphone rather than a Tablet

I am not seeing anything I need that justifies getting rid of my note1 - I wish I had a reason - I was ready to give my son my note1 (he was excited to get it and give up the nexus one he got from me a year ago) and have a new toy for myself in the note2, But I actually think the Note1 might be seen in a few months (when the data is in) as the better phone ( or the same w/ more dev access and cheaper used).
I like the res and aspect ratio better on the note1. I was ready to go with a bigger screen but it might not be there - in that I do not care about length in a phone, I care about width ( since a phone is a computer in my eyes for webpages and app browser/interacting), so if I understand reports right, I would actually lose width (for height) if I gave up my Note1 for the Note2. Hmm not sure I would pay hundreds for a downgrade.
I was excited about a great (read: better) camera, but that looks like the same one. The processor is not much better.
I have Jelly Bean / Google Now already ( thank you XDA devs) so nothing there software wise. And Note1 currently gives me better dev apps / roms for awhile to come.
I see no major improvements to the pen tech.
So we are down to a bigger battery ( big whoop - I have software that can conserve) and POSSIBLY fixes to old problems - like brick bug, black screen, so-so audio - but even if there is something, I have some software fixes to those. If I hear very significant improvements to these I might consider it ( amazing new sound) but I doubt it is enough. This looks like a mild yearly upgrade, for those who do not have a Note1, you get a slight updated version. It does not feel like a jumping off issue for those of us who love and want as much NOTE as we can get - I think we already might just have the best NOTE device now. Shoot, no reason to spend money. I guess I just buy another new gaming desktop instead.
Lol. I saw the video preview on TheVerge....and you can see that TouchWiz STILL stutters even with quad-core PLUS Jellybean.
At this point in technology, it's not the hardware anymore, since dual-cores are sufficient. It's all about software execution now.
Honestly i like note 1 ,it looks better and unique ... i wouldn't mind though to get the 3100mAh battery and the led notification and the 2 gb ram..

Hi All
I was lucky enough to attend the unpacked event this eve, and managed to get a few videos on some of the features of the Galaxy Note II recorded. If you fancy having a look head to my blog www.staceysamsungmobiler.blogspot.de/2012/08/galaxy-note-ii-feature-videos.html or search for my youtube channel (Staceyraver).
Other than that all I can say is that its a wonderful device....new Spen really impressed me (along with the new features that came with it) ...1024levels of pressure sensitivity = woah
Anyway hopefully see some of you at IFA?
I like the screen recording function, this can be great if it can be ported to other devices (or at least other Touchwiz devices).

Do you reckon the Note II will be much better seeing the quality of the Note II in such a short/ rushed introduction. I'm sure they will introduce the Note III in another year as well.
So...WHEN will be a good time to upgrade???

Thanks for the Vids...so how is the Note II screen compared to the Note I in terms of the SIZE, BRIGHTNESS and SHARPNESS?
Note 2 screen looks great. Resolution is slightly lower 720 instead of 800 but it still looks great.
Brightness seems good too.
Got to say it. I want one lol

Thought I would make a list of hardware improvements compared to N7000:
Quad core
2GB RAM
3100 mAh battery
New S-pen
Corning Glass 2
LED indicator
Bluetooth 4
NFC (Was listed as "optional" on the N7000, never understood what that meant)
Potentially superior pixel arrangement as reported by the Verge. Still not much clarity about this
Dual band wifi, Not sure what this does but it's listed on the specs sheet
On the minus side resolution and pixel density are a bit lower but the difference will be barely noticeable: 285ppi versus 267ppi
Overall this seems a solid hardware upgrade and there are some neat software improvements as well.
And there may be more hardware improvements which haven't been listed, perhaps in the camera and DAC for example.
Yeah the screen is a bit between RGB and pentile arrangement...but I haven't had much info on that yet.
Probably going to be posting an unboxing video later if anyone is interested?

This is just my opinion, but I never understood the interest in unboxing videos. Unboxing videos for cell phones are almost exactly the same.
Sometimes, there is interesting packaging, and sometimes seeling installs is good. (not relevant for phones though).
Although to be honest, watching Note 1's unboxing videos were fun for the first reactions to the phone 'OMG LOOK AT THE SIZE' stuff.
I am a fairly heavy user of My note - I have 250 apps on mine. I definitely feel the Note bogging down sometimes and I am quite looking forward to what the Note II brings me.
As I always advise people for ANY piece of technology - if you are quite happy with what you have now, there's little bang/buck in upgrading.
This is assuming of course, that the price of the Note is reasonable.
Does anyone recall how the Note was released i.e. the gaps between 'announced' - 'priced' ' - 'released'?
- Frank
Well it's a nice device. However 1 year isn't that long for me to do an upgrade.
Custom ROM on my current Note makes my phone a lot better than official Samsung firmware.
Now that I have read a ton of stuff on this new Note 2 on the net I have decided to keep my current Note until S4 or Note 3.
Also ATIV S has caught my attention more than Note 2. That phone is simply beautiful and it sports a dedicated camera button.

I've been wondering what, if announced, would make the Note 3 (or any other phone) a day 1 buy for me.
There's always the incremental MORE/LESS stuff - more screen, less weight, blah blah blah
The note 2 is good enough that I don't consider any of that to be a strong selling point.
Has technology/innovation peaked? What features could/would make the Note 3 a 'must buy'
for Note 2 owners (versus the expected 'guess I'll wait for the Note 4)? Or from a business
perspective, would could make people who were uninterested in the Note 3 interested in the Note 2?
I don't think the S4 won over any S3 haters.
The only recent interesting things I've seen are:
wireless charging
unbreakable screen
Metallic body (which I personally don't care about, but it sure is making the HTC One hot stuff)
All of the above I'd love, but nothing I'd sell my Note 2 to get.

I want to go mad with power lol.
Octa Core!
The hardware technology is close to peaking, I think. Flexible screens are just a marketing gimmick for me, and better radios aren't really new tech but refinements of what we already have. Screens are either unbreakable but not unscratchable, or unscratchable but not unbreakable. As for power -- every week we read about how this or that development will give us vastly more powerful batteries (rechargeable in 30 seconds, no less) but the problem is, they've been saying that for the past six or seven years and we're still stuck with the same old Li-Ion technology. Wireless charging still means leaving the phone on some device or other to charge -- only you don't plug it in. Now if my phone's battery would start charging as soon as I walked in the door, I might sit up and take notice.
The only innovations that would give me an incentive to buy a new device (the Note 99, maybe?) on day 1 would be either 128GB or more of storage without a huge increase in price, or a change in Android specs to allow apps to be stored and run from external cards. Not allowing apps to run from external storage has got to be one of Google's more short-sighted ideas, given that each Android iteration, not to mention manufacturer and carrier overlays, seems to eat more and more of available storage space for its own use.

in my country, note 2 now is about 30% cheaper compared to when it was launched. if thats the case in your area and since you are still satisfied with your note2, id wait for a few months until it gets cheaper before buying. as a bonus the official rom you buy might be more stable the the 1st release.
For me, personally, it would have to be a huge increase in onboard storage (I'm thinking 128GB minimum). Also, I would prefer a dedicated micro-HDMI port, instead of crappy MHL. These two things would make me get the GN3 on release day, but if not, I'll stick with my GN2 for the time being.
1080p, Exynos Octa w/LTE, more storage...yeah, I'm probably going to get it at launch. Those are enough to excite me.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
Frontal stereo speakers, Adreno 330, Snapdragon 800, metal body, 1080p 64 GB storage... these things are desirable, but still probably wouldn't buy it... and definately not on day one. Just recently got my Note 2
More likely when I switch, it will be to the Note 4... or perhaps some nice HTC/Sony. Maybe even a Nokia EOS, if such a thing ever breaks free from the rumorland....
I want a note 3 with all s4 features minus lag, screen tint and smearing issues (realistic wish list). It would be enough for a year at least. I would prefer a screen of 5.7 inch max, but it should never go beyond 6.0. The battery should be around 4000MAh. I don't care about body but design at least should not be carbon copy of note 2/s4. The minimum storage should be 32gig.
Larger screen without increasing the body size.
Larger battery, and I don't mind making the body slightly thicker either. For me battery life is more important than have it be under 11mm. I think 12mm is fine.
HD display, without a doubt.
SPen upgrade. I love the current generation, but if they can't make it any better then that'll be fine by me.
Next generation processor which I'm sure will be in there.
An awesome camera This one is good, but not that good. I'd much prefer something better.
I think that's it! If they add on a capacitive home button and an extra gig of ram I'm sold.
Thinner, lighter, better battery, full hd and 13mpix camera at least (or better if they can squeeze it). Battery life is fine with me. Processing power I don't care about anymore (it's plenty enough already).

Samsung will never set 32gb as minimum storage. They rather will cut it even more (like in galaxy s4).
Have to say I am impressed with my Note2 so far the best Android phone Ive had. Its the only phone I have not had to tamper with to make it faster. I did root it but no custom rom. Never had it die on me, been using it close to a year now and it still amazes me. Awesome device. The Note 3 would have to be significantly better to justify an upgrade. I agree with with what someone hasmentioned already, i believe we have reached a peak now....and only encremental changes will come. Else if they do decide to go all out with the Note 3...we will all be guinea pigs....like with the first samsung galaxy s.with the note 2 we have the perfect balance between battery life and performance. I still carry a spare battery around...just incase.

My first thought...

+ I like that it's water resistant.
- I hate that the battery is non-removable
- I hate that there's no camera flash
I would prefer it being slightly thicker if that would mean removable battery, camera flash, better battery life. What do you think?

I don't think so... since the Note II size is still quite unique we're obviously interested in phablets and I think most Note II owners think it's interesting to know about other phablet alternatives well (such as the Mega 6,3 which has already been discussed in this very forum).

Btw, the GNII size is no longer unique. But Samsung is still doing it right by allowing a removable battery which folks obviously love.

If what you're after is just a big screen, then consider the Galaxy Note 8. It may seem pricey at $400, but no more so than some of the new phones hitting the market today (unless you go with a subsidized phone, which I have given up on). I did purchase the w-fi only model and I'm happy as a clam with it -- I just wish I'd held out for the one with a SIM slot!

It has a weak camera without flash, a small battery and a really REALLY fast cpu which will suck the battery dry. Mark my words when I say this thing will kill your battery in 3 hours screen time. Not interested.

IMO the design is borderline kitsch.
The 24bit/92 Khz is totally irrelevant, since no one can hear the difference, 3200 mhA is below expectations (4 hours more is, more likely than not, BS), 3 GB RAM is standard nowadays in top of the line phones, 13 MP camera unneeded and probably detrimental to low light image quality and 4k video recording irrelevant to 99% of users since 4k TVs and monitors still cost an arm and a leg.
Oh, and moving from 5.5" to 5.7" doesn't make a difference in real life use.
As for software, thank you for bringing it to the Note II also, which I intend to keep until the note IV is released.

You said that, not Samsung. The only thing Samsung said is that the three devices you mentioned will receive an update in October that will let them support the Galaxy Gear. What's in the update is pure speculation at this point. I'd also highly doubt that Exynos Quad and 2GB of RAM will be able to run all the new multitasking features shown on the S-800/Octa 3GB N3 and Note 10.1 2014. I'm also concerned about S Pen compatibility between the "old" S Pen and the "new" S Pen they were talking about at the launch. I also wonder if the new S Note app will be backwardly compatible.
Just more to speculate about and a reason for people to open another dozen new “update” threads.

I think they said it will have 4 more hours of video playback not 40% better battery.
EDIT:
For me note 3 seems to be a well worthy upgrade.
Larger screen while thinner and lighter and maintaining same size.
Better camera.
Better material used (the back cover does not have the glare and fingerprint problems as the glossy plastic used in all previous phones and according to most reviews it feels better)
A little bit bigger battery
Much better screen (higher resolution, looks like the gs4 screen which received very good praise)
It will have an IR blaster? (not sure about this point, but I assume it does since gas4 has it)
Better software (that launching application in a floating box looks awesome, and they can be minimized)
It has USB 3.0? Isn't that like 10x faster transfer rate?
3gb ram and better processor (not sure if that will make a difference though in practical use)
The standard space is 32GB now, that means coupled with 64gb sd card, you will have a total of 96GB, which i enough for any person I imagine.
S-pen seems to be improved, although to be fair I was never a big s-pen user.
Only thing is missing is front speakers like the htc one, then it might have been the perfect phone.

Don't generalize, many people actually can hear the difference in audio, 3gb ATM is not a standard as many of the rumored or just announced smartphone are 2gb, the 13mpx camera is a big improvement as seen in the sgs4(one of the best android camera in a phone), and 4k recording gives you a "lossless" zoom quality plus probably 4k will become a standard in some years and early support is nice, plus it have the microusb 3.0 and best display and HW announced.
I think it's a great device, probably my next one.
