Hello, Smart people
I tried to search but couldn't find any proper solution. Is it possible to downgrade S8 running on Android 9, I want to install version 8 on it.
Thanks
i am also interested in doing this. i have had my phone for over a year, i was very careful never to download. the other day it popped up as i was taking a photo, and wham. normally i would have ripped the battery out of the back. but no such chances anymore.
the new os sucks huge. big stupid buttons, changes to the camera, the messages are pure misery.
i am on bootloader build 5. i have tried to use odin several times, only to discover this bootloader number thing on these forums.
im going to be furious if last week i was build 1.
at this point i would consider rooting the phone only out of spite to samsung for not letting me customize my phone anymore.

You can only go back to Android 8 if you have bootloader version 4. Use this code on your phone *#1234 # to know your version of bootloader.

Cool I will check after Easter and see what boat loader it is.
If even OEM boot loader is downgrade is off, can I still do it? If it’s version 4?
Thanks

You do not need to shut down OEM to downgrade! Respect only the bootloader version, otherwise it will brikar the cell phone, downgrade before the April patch as it is coming with bootloader version 5.

You do not need to disable OEM to downgrade.

You can not because Oreo uses bootloader version 4, forcing a downgrade will turn your phone into a brick.

i tried to backdown using odin, it kept giving me errors. does odin protect the phone lol?

hi, try flashing https://idlekernel.com/twrp/hero2qlte/3.0.0-0/twrp-3.0.0-0-hero2qltetmo.tar.md5
while it isn't for your phone (it's actually for T-Mobile S7 Edge), if it at least flashes then you are in the clear and I will happily port TWRP for G930P.
If the flash fails with SECURE CHECK FAIL, then you are out of luck. (nothing is changed and it won't trip knox)
RESULTS
if it flashes successfully, and trips knox, then you have an unlocked bootloader, and twrp will happen for you in a few days
if it does not flash, it will not trip knox, and nothing will have changed, but you have a locked bootloader
I'll test when I get back home thanks

Sprint variant is locked. Thanks for the confirmation. Yeah, you're Fked, apologies!
T-Mobile is also locked.
You may one day become vulnerable to a live root exploit such like TowelRoot, but you will never be able to use a custom recovery, system image (ROM), or kernel.

I've been perusing threads in the s7 forums, members have tried and failed to flash anything onto the US variants, international versions have been rooted though.

This is probably on Samsung, not Sprint, tbh.
Either way, the Galaxy 7 customers in the U.S. are completely screwed, as far as ever getting root/recovery/any development for Galaxy 7s goes.
No chance of development means no real need for these forums on XDA, honestly.
(I mean, this is an Android Development website.)
Let the devs figure it out if they can; until that happens there's nothing to really do here. ?
(My device is going back, though.)

In our current S***y state i guess we will just have to bounty for a working root.

Would Anyone Like To Post Detailed Instructions On How To Flash The "U FIRMWARE"? .. Also (if possible) could someone include all the necessary files & give any details on the firmware (i.e. Pros or Cons).. I've seen it mentioned in a few other threads, with some people making claims that it's much smoother, also the root is more stable on that firmware. But I can't seem to find a dedicated thread on it. So if there's one out there post the link or feel free to comment instructions, any useful instructions will be added to the OP

Hi, here's something from our friends with a Verizon s7 edge, they've written a step by step on how to flash the U firmware and what to do afterwards. What You and us t-mobile users need to flash is SM- G935U (TMO region) firmware which u can find on sammobile.com. Please read the instructions carefully and best of luck with flashing. Cheers!

Keep in mind there's also a lot in here that doesn't pertain especially if you don't need root so be careful people, this as Mag says is for Verizon but the process is the same just make sure you have the T-Mobile files if on T-Mobile. You can download at SamMobile I have a SM-G935T which is now a G35U with the new modem APK1 and have wifi calling and VOLTE in my mobile network settings and ZERO bloat which is why U firmware is desired. It doesn't have any carrier bloat because it's not for any carrier so none have installed all their bloat so it's very fast. You will lose root and everything but can redo it and reroot also.. just make sure you're getting the right files and not flashing VZW on to T-Mobile etc etc. I ALMOST did then realized lol. I Got excited. I was never going to root so none if that mattered but I tried it and after all the suggested tweaks and fixed it still ran unacceptable for me so I'm not rooted at all now. Too buggy and too many weird FCs and errors/bugs so I factory rest and flashed U and new modem and my phone has never been faster even when rooted and CPU setting tweaked etc. (Too many bugs as stated)

No because you're flashing an official firmware not a rom. No root and won't trip Knox as other have reported. This is true for all variants since it's an official firmware.

Prob not. Many people including me have done ALL of the post root modifying to make it run better when rooted with very little success. I tried every single post root method to try and get it stable and nothing made a difference and if it did it sure wasn't stable anyways. So bad that I Reodined the entire thing and started fresh and didn't root. The root is very unstable and simply not worth it. I don't need root for anything I care about anyway and my S7 Edge is plenty fast. and running the U firmware there's no bloat except like 2-3 apps which I can live with and that was one major reason to root anyway (to delete the bloat) so meh to root for me.... If you read back many have reported this. I don't need nor want root and when I saw how bad it ran I immediately re did it all. Now it's lightning fast, I get amazing LTE speeds because if the APK1 MODEM and I'm in one if the 319 cities supporting the 4x4 MIMO LTE that the APJ1 Takes advantage of. My LTE is faster than most people's wifi. So I recommend d regarding the Odin and forgetting about root. It's just too buggy and I'm by no way a noob. Been here fir 10 years so I know what I'm doing and I couldn't get it stable enough even applying every single post root suggestion. It ran like crap and wasn't even usable unfortunately. No offense to the root team whatsoever they achieved root and kudos to them it's just not established enough to be a daily driver sorry to say.
My latest LTE speed abiut 20 mins ago. Not wifi....LTE..LOL it's amazing if yoyre in T-Mobile and you're in one if the cities supporting it. I imagine everywhere in the US will sooner or later it most cities. It's relatively new but I'm getting speeds unheard of. Before this I was getting like 10 mbps download and 8 Mbps upload
Not it's more like 6p-70 and 40-70 depending in where in my city I am. It varies deoending on how close to towers and what not you are if course. But damn it's fast.. wow

is there a way to install this U firmware and then simply root it and not install all the other junk? I love it running U stock with the new modem because it HAULS ass, but I want to root so I can edit the build.prop and since you have to be rooted that's hay I ask. But the root causes all kinds of issues and post -root stuff needs to happen to get it even stable which none worked for me, a few did but it ran horrible so I immediately returned to stock and redid the U firmware. so is the something like a way to just root for file access only without it modifying anything else? I doubt it but don't know much abut the U firmware except it runs amazing until rooted at least from everything I'm reading. a couple peeps claim there's is running amazing even rooted but I have doubts...mine ran like total crap even after applying all the tweaks and kernel settings with Trickster and the like (which I know how to use very well and bought it and have owned and used it for years....any ideas? Hi -
I am a person that just has to have his phone rooted. Dont ask me why, but I do. And I love custom ROMS. Since I do not really see any custom ROMS for the S7 yet,
I will settle for just rooting my S7, I was hopping someone would be kind enough to point me to the correct files needed to ROOT my phone and maybe a small odin walkthrough.
Phone info:
Galaxy S7 SM-G935T 6.0.1
Baseband G935TUVU4APK1

Also ... what about TWRP support ? I want to be able to nandroid backup. Is there a version of TWRP out yet for the S7 ?

The answer to both of these is that since the bootloader is locked, you can't install custom recoveries which makes custom Roms a lot harder (but not impossible!) There's two that are in the Roms subforum (TEK and Echoe) but I've personally found stock U firmware + root to be the fastest/most stable.

Build Number MNB29M.G35TUVU4APK1
Also ... what about TWRP support ? I want to be able to nandroid backup. Is there a version of TWRP out yet for the S7 ?

Is your reason for "have to have root" for a specific reason or no? This root us really laggy and buggy as hell so if I were you I wouldn't do it. There's no Roms really. Well two I think but it's going to be more if a headache than the benefit of root. No one "has" to have root. What do you need that's so important by rooting. That's silly....

I'm not sure bud. I LOVE the U firmware and the APK1 modem for Tmobile have made my LTE VERY fast and the U firmware as well with ZERO bloat. I wouldn't downgrade anyway but can't answer your question, I simply don't know. Are you on ATT or something? I haven't heard of that firmware even...but I've been on Tmobile for about 6 years or so...

In following the Essential support page's instructions for installing the Android P Preview 2, I unlocked my boot loader.
Now I'd like to relock the boot loader, but I remember reading a thread here about a guy who tried to relock the book loader after having installed (and maybe uninstalled) a custom ROM. He ended up bricking his phone.
Is there any danger in relocking my boot loader if I have only installed factory-provided versions of Android?
FWIW, my first attempt to load Android P did go well; wifi wouldn't work. I reinstalled Oreo. The next day, I tried side loading Android P, and that went fine.

If you are all stock and no root, no harm in relocking the boot loader.
Just make sure you haven't done any modifications to your phone..
You didn't actually need to unlock your phone to sideload the Android P preview. Sideloading an OTA works with a locked bootloader. Your phone needs to be fully stock if you plan on relocking your bootloader. That means no custom recovery, no root and no modifications to the system partition. You can definitely run the Android P preview with a locked bootloader--I am--but if your bootloader is already unlocked you want to make sure your phone has no custom modifications before relocking it or you will brick your phone. Relocking your booloader will also erase all your data.
I see no reason to relock it whatsoever. High potential risk, and what is the gain?

Passing safety net without screwing around with magisk. And getting OTA's which have been pretty frequent since launch. That's what's kept me stock!

Yeah, I realized that I could sideload the AndP preview only after trying the "recommended" fastboot method described on the Essential site. The only reason I unlocked the bootloader was to flash AndP, following Essential's instructions. Then then fastboot method didn't even work.

Will I not be able to get the next OTA (actually Over The Air) with my bootloader unlocked? Some users have reported that their PH-1s accepted an OTA even with an unlocked bootloader. Here's one example:

Really? I just wanted to confirm this. This could be the reason I leave my bootloader unlocked, since I could presumably sideload the next AndP preview OTA.

Having an unlocked bootloader has no effect on OTAs. Rooting, installing a custom recovery or custom kernel is what causes OTA issues.

Every time you unlock or relock your bootloader it erases your data like a factory reset. But having an unlocked bootloader by itself doesn't prevent you from installing OTAs normally.

here's some light reading for you:
https://www.androidcentral.com/netflix-pulls-service-rooted-and-bootloader-unlocked-android-phones
and a quote:
Rooted users started noticing the app gone from Google Play on their devices over the weekend, and Netflix eventually confirmed it did this intentionally. The streaming service is now using Google's Wildvine DRM to block the app from rooted devices that don't pass Wildvine's security status, and its Google Play listing will not appear for devices that fail a SafetyNet check, which not only rules out rooted phones but also unrooted phones that are bootloader-unlocked.r

I want the exploit to do more than just root your phone like partcyborg rom. Here are the things that I want it to do. Disable Knox, include Xposed, Have some humor involved (for example, a boot screen that shows a picture of an SMG, the number 950 and a Wii U:laugh, and improve battery life. I believe that we can do this if we work really hard and work together. I need your help because I'm only 16. There's no way I can do it by myself.

A friend of mine gave me an S8 phone. Its reset and wiped clean. I was trying to set it up but it requires his old gmail account and password to get in to. The problem is, it won't take his password. He emailed google about it and he's waiting to see if they will recover his account on it. He won't be using the phone anymore as he has a new one. I'd like to use it as I have an S7 and this one has double the storage space that mine has.
If they can't recover his account, I want to flash the memory and start over. I've been a computer tech for 20 years so I know all about flashing the BIOS and how that can brick it. My question is, since I can't get into the system of the phone and see what the version of the firmware is, how confident can I rely on the back of the phone where it says SM-G950U? I've read that even though its branded that way on the back, it doesn't necessarily follow that it will show that in the system. I've downloaded the newest firmware I can find for it, SM-G950U_201910251442240_c0osvhilm6_fac from Updato and will use Odin to flash it with.

You know I've been sitting here thinking about this. And it's TRUE 100% most of the bricks and bricking does happen on the locked us devices. Me myself even have a semi bricked one just sitting here to no avail of fixing hours and hours spent. They are a lot more finicky it seems than a unlocked bootloader ???
I'm sorry but I'm still having trouble getting this to work. I've tried the combo file and putting the extracted file in the AP section, and while that works, the phone just goes into a loop from the Factory Binary to that Settings screen and once its rebooted, it all starts again.
