I have a Samsung Galaxy A9 Star (SM-G8850) purchased on the Chinese market. Once updated to the latest firmware I get:
AP: G8850ZCU3ASA1
CP: G8850ZCU3ASA1
CSC: G8850CHC3ASA1
Model: SM-G8850/DS
The firmware comes with all the usual Chinese crapware and I would like to switch it to the Hong Kong (TGY) firmware in order to access Google Play Services and use it outside China. I have found the official pages detailing the firmware versions (CHC for China, TGY for HK) and the appropriate page on SamMobile with instructions for uploading a new firmware using Odin.
Is this process safe and/or reversible? Do I need to root or install TWRP recovery first? Are the China/HK versions of the phone hardware-identical? Is there a guide for this for a similar phone that I could attempt to follow, is there anything else I need to consider relating to partition size? Is there a different way to install GApps and Google Play Services on a Chinese market phone? Has anyone tried this before?
Thanks for any help!
Update on progress. Unfortunately this is currently not possible for me since I updated the Chinese firmware from bootloader U1 to U3, and the latest version of the TGY firmware still uses U2. I think it would be necessary to root the phone to downgrade, which would trigger Knox.
CSC CHC: G8850ZCU3ASA1
CSC TGY: G8850ZHU2ASA1
Attempting to flash the old version results in "SW REV CHECK FAIL [abl]Fused 3 > Binary 2"
For anyone who has not yet updated, if flashing directly with the same bootloader level doesn't work, this guide seems likely to work:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/how-to/guide-changing-csc-s8-s8-root-t3799045
Using combination files available here:
https://combinationfirmware.com/combination-samsung-galaxy-a9-star
Would appreciate reports from anyone trying this. I will be waiting for a TGY build using U3.
Another update. TGY Build G8850ZHU3BSEB was released, with U3 bootloader and Android 9. Using this firmware, it is possible to change the phone from the Chinese CHC firmware to Hong Kong TGY firmware. The phone changes its model number from Galaxy A9 Star to Galaxy A8 Star. Simply download Odin 3.13.3 and the firmware from https://www.sammobile.com/samsung/galaxy-a8-star/firmware/SM-G8850/ and flash.

question 1:
my current firmware is N9005XXUGNG1_N9005ATOGNG1_N9005XXUGNG1_HOME.tar.md5, phone is probably from Austria A1 network (i bought it in local store with papers)
now there is update to android 5.0. Of course i got info and tried to update phone via wifi but after it download firmware (over 810mb) during recovery flash it end at 29% with ERROR message than suggest to use KIES so can i now use POLAND XEO firmware:

if YES, which file should i use B6 or A5 (i think B6 but update from Austria A1 for n9005 is A5)?
question 2:

Hi,
I'm in Qatar and I've SM-N9005 with Baseband N9005XXUGNG1. Can I flash official update firmware from other countries like Saudi Arabia with firmware N9005XXUGBOEA?
I would really appreciate if someone could give me link to some kind of tutorial on reading firmware compatibility issues.
Regards

I have been trying to find an answer to this for a long while, but I just can't. There are some ROMs which are meant for 32 GB devices, and then there are some ROMs which are meant for 16 GB devices. If you download a ROM which is meant for 16 GB Note 3, then obviously you won't be able to flash it on a 32 GB Note 3. And the firmwares listed on sammobile.com don't say which are which!
So I have given up, when a new base pops up, I simply head over to the Alexandar's topic to see whether he has complied the newer version or not, and he does that so fast. That is as stock as a ROM can get, other than ROMs from sammobile.com, so I don't really bother any more.
Last year I was given a Galaxy Note 3 as a present. It is an SM-N900, csc country TGY (Hong Kong). I get the message from Kies that the 4.4.2 is the latest firmware. So I looked around, and there are plenty of 5.0 downloads, but all of these lead me to a site that require a 'premium membership', for pay of course.
Is there an official Samsung website where the (original) firmware versions can be downloaded, without the need for Kies? And particularly, is there a location where the Dutch 5.0 version for the SM-N900 (official international model) can be found?
T.
I'd forgotten how messy the download pages look when you're not using an adblocker.. And how confusing the multiple download buttons can be to people who aren't used to downloading off the internet.
You can use Sammobile.com (You don't need a premium account, just a free one), or Samsung-updates.com.
There is no official site, but these both use the KIES firmwares.
Hello folks;
I created a SamMobile account, and am currently downloading two 5.0 firmware sets: TGY (Hong Kong) and a SER (Russia) .
Russian version:

PDA N900XXUEBOD1
CSC N900SEREBOB1
Hong Kong version:

Model name GALAXY Note 3

Version Android 5.0
Changelist 4031530
Build date Wed, 18 Mar 2015 03:08:27 +0000
Product code TGY
PDA N900ZSUEBOC3
CSC N900OZSEBOC3
================================
My phone type is SM-N900, a gift from a relative . Got it in China, and the current firmware is:
Bootloader N900ZSUDNB1
Baseband N900XXUBMI2
PDA N900ZSUDBN1
CSC N900OZSDNB1
The original CSC country code is TGY, Hong Kong. As far as I can see, there are no restrictions, I can access Google playstore etc. Can't do that with a Mainland Chinese phone....
If I want to download the current firmware, to have it available just in case, I am directed to a Baidu site. Can't get the original firmware via SamMobile. Guess that means that if an upgrade via ODIN goes wrong, I am stuck?
Questions:
- should I use the TGY or the SER firmware?
- any way to go back to the original firmware in case the update does not work?
Thanks for your help,
T.
Questions belong in Q&A, not General.
Thank you.

You need to do some reading around. HK (& some other Asian ones) firmware tends to be different to the rest of the world - I think it's partition sizes. Try flashing a non-HK ROM and you're likely to soft brick or bootloop your phone.
Learn about how to get around the issue and you can flash whatever you like (within reason ) but at present HK is what you should stick with.
Not sure why you get a redirect - either China doesn't want you flashing anything else or the phone hosts file has crap in it.
phone details
samsung galaxy note 4 (snapdragon 805)
5.1.1
sm-n910f
baseband version: n910fxxu1coj3
I was following a guide but then came across a few questions
I am trying to update to 6.0.1 i need some advice about which rom to install as automatic update will not work. Little unsure what region rom to use i am from Australia and this phone model is not a Australian model i am guessing i should use one of the United kingdom ones?
A google search revealed N910FXXU1COJ3 firmware version for Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (Snapdragon) (SM-N910F) from region DBT what is DBT? is there a 6.0.1 DBT?
Just make sure the model number of the firmware matches that of your device. After you have installed it onto your device and just skip through the set up process. Then perform a hard factory reset but wipe the cache partition first. You should now be able to get firmware OTA updates on your device.

DBT is just the CSC code, its Germany. Best and most stable I would say is to flash the 6.0.1 united kingdom BTU one.

Download the firmware from here. Once downloaded extract it to pc.
https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/download/111876/N910FXXS1DPK1_N910FBTU1DPI1_BTU/
Download odin from here. Version 3.10.6 seems to work better.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2711451&page=19
On device go to software info, tap build number 7 times until developer options is available. Go on developer options and enable usb debugging.
Open odin, click AP and insert the unzipped firmware.
Turn phone off, once off hold power + down + home until phone boots to download mode.
Plug phone into pc and wait until it says added in odin with a blue COM box. Click options in odin, check auto reboot and f.reset time. Uncheck repartition.
Then just press start, it will flash the firmware and reboot. The first time it boots it may take like 20 mins or so.
Yea I'm having a similar issue too. OTA and smart switch says that my phone is up to date but I know it is not according to sam mobile. My device is sm-n190s XSG and I flashed a stock 5.1.1. Rom months ago. I know I can update via Odin if I wanted to, but how do I update the normal way if I wanted to in the future?
Dear XDA,
to get my fingerprint sensor working with Lineage-OS 7.1.2 on my S5 Duos, I want to update the baseband firmware.
Because I couldn't find any clear information of the region of my phone (*#1234# didn't work with lineage-os), and there is no firmware for my country/region, I thought I go the super-easy way to update via Kies3.
Done so, but unfortunately the baseband isn't updated, and there are no FOTA/Kies3 updates available. AP has been updated to the latest version (G900FDXXS1CQD2), but not the baseband ...
When I check AP,CP,CSC on now-stock rom with *#1234#, it says:
AP: G900FDXXS1CQD2
CP: G900FDXXU1CQA4 (as before Kies3-update)
CSC: g900FDOJV1CQB1
On sammobile.com and samsung-updates.com I find G900FDXXs1CQD2 firmwares, but nowhere they say whether it's AP, CSC or CP (the thing I need updated).
I think I don't mind the region as long as English and French is included and I can use LTE in (Western) Europe.
Two questions:
1)
a) when it says "Version" on (can't post urls) samsung-updates: is this the CP/Baseband?
b) similar on sammobile.com: There is PDA and CSC, both differing. But I need baseband/cp.
2) I understand that there are no carrier-specific firmwares (S5 duos apparently not sold by carriers?). So if version/pda is also baseband, which firmware do I download? There are 8 different firmwares with G900FDXXS1CQD2?
kind regards
1. Most likely it's AP, but CP should be the same as AP inside. Sorry, it looks like CQA4 is the latest CP for this S5 variant.
2. Most likely any if you're planning to flash modem only.
CPs will be the same.
Carrier firmwares within one S5 VARIANT and firmware VERSION differ by CSC and hidden partition size.
Hi
My device (Galaxy J5 2016) has recieved the update to Nougat 7.1.1 over an year ago, but I can't appear to be able to check for OTA updates- so I've attempted to look up the firmware online.
Apparently, the FN model is not officialy supported by Samsung for region ILO, so I can't find it's updated firmware anywhere and I oddly enough also can't find the firmware I currently have on this device, so I can't do anything (Also attempted Samsung support.. they can't help me.)
The device is currently on Marshmellow 6.0.1
the CSC is J510FOJK1APE3
AP: J510FNXXU2APK6
CP: J510FNXXU2APK6 (the same as AP)
Model: SM-J510FN
I want to stay using official firmware, avoid tripping KNOX and safely install this update without having to do a factory reset as I'd expect by upgrading a device to a correct firmware. What can I do?

There doesn't seem to be Firmware anywhere for the J510FN for Israel. There are plenty firmwares for J510F for Israel but not FN that I can see anywhere just as you said in the post.

Am I able to somehow modify the CSC in the firmware to match mine, so I won't have to factory reset / wipe and install it just as it's supposed to be officialy? I find it rather odd I do have a firmware with a CSC that isn't even supported for my device and yet KNOX is untripped and the firmware status is official.
