TWRP Nandroid Backup results in createTarFork() process ended with ERROR=255 - OnePlus 5 Questions & Answers

So I'm trying to make a TWRP Nandroid Backup, but it results in "createTarFork() process ended with ERROR=255"
In another thread someone wrote:
finally i got it working!
flashed latest twrp (cheeseburger or blue spark), then advanced, filemanager
delete every "999" folder:
sdcard
/data/user/999
/data/user_ce/999
/data/user_de/999
/data/misc_ce/999
/data/misc_de/999
/data/system_ce/999
/data/system_de/999
after try to backup again. it's working for me

Will deleting those "999-files" mess up something for my current phone state?
I've spent days configuring apps and stuff and I don't want to loose all my fine tuning.

There are several solutions on this thread covering your whole question https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5/help/createtarfork-process-error255-t3727673/page2
It's useful to keep discussion within one thread and not to create multiple ones with the same topic

I started a new thread since I figure few people will read a thread marked as [SOLVED], and also; I've already read through that whole thread, including all the threads it links to, and nowhere does anyone clearly state whether removing the 999-folders will mess something up regarding a phones current state or not. So my question still remains.

My linked thread isn't solved.
There are several solutions, did you tried them besides the one you wrote?

Hmm, true, it isn't marked solved. It must've been one of the other threads.
Anyway, I tried the suggestions to turn things of in the settings withing the OS, but they were either already turned off, or not available within the menus.
I don't dare to try the more complicated stuff before I know that it won't screw things up my current OS state for me.
Will deleting the 999-folders change anything other than removing an extra user?

Did you also tried to remove the user with the terminal commands?
As long as you take backups, nothing will be lost.

I didn't dare to use the terminal commands before knowing if something will be screwed up.
I can't make backups because TWRP gives me the ERROR=255 problem this thread is about. :-/

[Q] CWM v3

Ive seen many questions in the Q & A forum about this CWM and figured the best way is to get developers and other main contributors to look at the issues some of the "little people" have about using it. DAF was convenient and easy for all because it was one click for the people who could get that far, and since CWM, there where the 3 versions and this one has yet to really be well touched upon as a full tutorial with the copy to SD not being needed any more. I feel as do many others that a main "sticky" thread be made for it with a few FAQ on this section of the forum so they do not have to search too far away from the main thread they are using and get completely confused.
1. Will doing a backup and changing ROMs using CWM with different partition delete my backup?
2. Will doing a backup KEEP my partition?
3. Is it possible to do a partition from CWM or is the partition need to be carried on a computer?
(this to me seemed to defeat the purpose of CWM with some DEVs making their own partition layouts and not using the main ones that were originally laid out for use, no aim towards DEVs because I know they work hard)
4. If I put multiple ROMs on my SD card do I need to change the partition every time if I want to change them?
5. Is there a way to know which backups are from which ROMs I had used?
(I guess this is asking if they can change the name?)
6. How do I know when to "Wipe Cache Partition"?
I know there is *THIS* thread, however there are surely some differences between the copy of those files and not needing to copy amongst other things to which the "new" people do not understand.
If this is just a bother and hindrance to you all, I understand the deletion of this thread, however it did take quite a while to plan out what to write, and what not to should you choose to do so and I would give the answers, however even I do not know all of them and so I leave this to you all for debate. NO PUBLIC BASHING PLEASE
Dude, this forum is for posting dev projects. Why on earth do you think its ok to post a questions topic in here when we have a dedicated questions forum?!?!

I said it could be moved or deleted just the questions are not very well maintained in that DEDICATED (? HA) forum there are multiple posts of the same and I felt that since there is a sticky thread here that could answer the forum issue of the DEVELOPED CWM program this should be brought to the attention and as such is a DEV related issue. It can and most likely will be moved, do you have an answer to any of the issues the people asked?

No this will not delete your back up as it is saved on yor SD card when you do the back up.

This I am not really sure of as I am not a dev but I think it does as the backup is just a backup of your settings, personal information, your gmail account associated with your Android, boot data, and any cache data that you have built up.

You can partition your SD card with CWM but I do not think you can do a system portion as CWM is what creats the system portion when you flash it. It creates a partition in the CWM.

Once again I am not a dev (yet) and I am not 100% sure of this. But I would say if the ROMs you have stored on SD card need different portition sizes then yes you will need to change the partition size when you change ROMs. If they require the same partition size then no you do not need to change the partition size.

You should be able to manually go into your SD card with a computer and change the name on the backup file, but I do not know if this will interfer with CWM being able to detect the backup file. So you might want to write down the original full name of the file befor you change it.

As a rule of thumb I would not delete my cache unless I was about to flash a new ROM.
Also check out my guide I wrote in linked in my sig, you might find it useful.
Hope this helps you out some.

Clockwork Backups

Is there anyway to export the backups created in clockwork? I have a couple of roms setup the way I like and backed up. I want to export them to my computer to clear some room on my sd card but want to make sure I can flash them as needed. Any issues with just cutting and pasting them?

I've never done it, but I don't see why copying them to your Pc would mess things up. I think that would work just fine. I'd do a test run if I were you, but should be fine.
EDIT: and before someone else says it this really belong in Q&A not development.
ok sorry maybe someone could move it for me.
There ain't be a Q&A section in these parts.

To the OP. Yes you can. Just copy the backup onto your computer and you can delete it from your SD card. And if you want it back, just copy it back on. No problems at all
Awesome thanks for the information.

Cleaned. In the future, you can all keep your testy comments to yourselves and just PM me to move the thread, which I will almost certainly find and move anyway (like I did this one.) Keep it civil. You just clutter the thread with flaming, which makes it harder for n00bs to find answers, which results in... more threads in the wrong section!

[WIP] [DEV] Any dev know where BT config is stored within i9505G?

Trying to fix my Bluetooth issue, as chronicled in detail here.
Wanted to ask you devs where Bluetooth configuration or a related error log is stored on the i9505G so I can take a look at it; something is stopping my BT from being able to turn on; it used to work fine pre-root (heck, even post-root for a day or so).
I figured the developers would be the best people to ask since you'd be familiar with the folder structure and config files.

KrossX this is the second time you have posted questions in the development forum. As I stated before these are for Q&A NOT here. Please refrain from posting your questions here and READ the XDA users guide and forum rules again. There is a reason for this. I am glad your part of the community and your questions and comments are noteworthy you just need to put them in the right place. We read those threads as well! MJ

Yes PLEASE no name calling we all make mistakes and this thread will be moved soon to the proper place
And to answer your question Kriss you could do a logcat but if your not familiar with that do a search and provide more info on what your trying to do ( configuration?)

I thought that since I was aiming this more at the devs it would've been in the Dev forums. Sorry for having you move yet another thread of mine.
Didn't mean to cause a ruckus; never really got a chance to read the post by deaffob above before it was edited by the mod so no offense from whatever name-calling was done, haha.

Any ideas (referring to attached pic)? I filtered at the Error level in the logs for the term "Bluetooth"

The first error there looks like it may be relevant, but you'll need to get a more thorough logcat in order to trouble shoot it more. Please grab one with adb and post it to pastebin or here in a [ code][ /code] box.

Good news and bad news.
Bad news: I am unable to run logcat; I am unable to access my device via USB ever since the root and when I tried doing the logcat steps, yet again it couldn't connect to my device.
Good news: I believe the solution to this issue (being unable to access my device via USB) may also lie in the logs along with the bluetooth issue. The reason why is because of this error message I received while trying to reinstall the USB driver (attached pic); it points to not being able to "start" a device. I think this will all eventually tie-in with some services not running correctly on my phone.
So, is there another way for me to post a log for you kind folks to review on here via my phone directly?
If I can do that via catlog app on my device, let me know what sort of log (which options) I'd need to run and post. Thanks!
Well, did a restore to stock + root. That didn't help. It changed the Baseband, Kernel, and Build versions but did nothing to fix my issues with BT and USB connectivity.
I think I am going to start researching ways to start from scratch. Like a factory reset/wipe back to first-use condition. If anyone can point me towards some reading material on how to do that safely and wisely, it would be much appreciated!
I just ended up doing a factory reset (Menu-->Settings-->Backup & Reset-->Factory Data Reset) and that resolved the issue (while wiping my phone).
Bluetooth issue is resolved; tested it just now and it works just fine again. As is the USB issue; as soon as the phone was connected to the same exact PC as before, it was recognized and showed up as a device that I could open and explore.
My Kernal/Baseband/Build versions are all back to the ones I had when I got the phone from the Google Store, so that's comforting too.
Thanks to all those who attempted to help!

[Q] unkown imei. extracting efs from qcn.

hi I was trying to unlock my g900w8 galaxy s5, I guess I ended up erasing my efs.
I ended up with imei=unknown, the baseband and everything else reads correct. but I keep getting the 'mobile network not available' or the "not registered to network" error'
and no my imei is not blacklisted I just need to get it back on my phone.
I did make a back up of the nv with nv writer and a back up of qcn with qpst. but I did not make a copy of my efs folder.
my problem is I cannot restore my nv nor can I restore my qcn. its getting blocked from some kind of permission. for example when I try to restore in nv writer I get these errors:
Writing NV-items from a file:
Unsuccessfully written NV-items:
00001 (0x0001) - Read only item
00002 (0x0002) - Read only item
00003 (0x0003) - Read only item
00550 (0x0226) - Access denied
00855 (0x0357) - SPC (6 digits) is required
01943 (0x0797) - Read only item
05597 (0x15DD) - Read only item
05598 (0x15DE) - Read only item
10155 (0x27AB) - Access denied
Done.
and similar issues with qcn back up.
is this because of the s5 firmware?
how do I force a successful write?
or if possible how can I extract my efs info from my two back ups?
when I open the qcn file as an archive with 7.zip I do see several folders like EFS_Backup, NV_Items, NV_NUMBERED_ITEMS, Provisioning_Item_Files. but I don't know what to do with them or how to convert them into something I can put back in my phone.
thanks any help would be appreciated.
We're sorry to hear that your phone got messed up. Just goes to show that the very first thing anyone ought to be doing is making backups just in case you need them. That should be common sense but we're all guilty of taking risks sometimes.
However, we can tell that you didn't do much of a search or read more than about two posts in the forum before posting. If you had you would have found countless posts asking this question and the inevitable response i.e. discussing how to change /repair /modify, etc IMEI numbers is not permitted on this forum. It's too easy to abuse or facilitate the trade in stolen phones.
And no, I doubt that the staff will make an exception just for you. You'll have to rely upon Google or possibly your carrier will replace your phone under warranty regardless of cause. Often if you don't volunteer information, they don't really look too closely at why a phone fails. Samsung will have no problem ultimately repairing the original phone when it goes their refurbishment process.

thank you for you reply, I have searched, I've searched all over the net even, I do know that talking about changing the imei is not permitted on this forum but in my searches I have come upon many threads regarding imei problems and recovery, coming from this board as well. I have tried many different things and programs, wiped my phone a few times reinstalling the firmware, rooting, unrooting etc. but I still do not have a solution to my problems
I am not trying to change my imei, I lost it while trying to unlock my phone. I am just trying to recover my imei through my back ups or any means to get my phone back up and running.... even if it was just help to get my back ups to actually back up to my phone I would be really greatfull because at the moment it is just a really expensive paperweight.
thank you.

You are trying to change your IMEI. From it's current value to the original one. And posting how to change an IMEI can be expected to be abused by thieves and the like. You can't say, I know the rules say don't explain how to pick locks. but it's okay because i will only use it to get into my own house. Umm, no. Once posted, miscreants will have access to the information as well. No doubt the reason why XDA staff don't allow the type of discussion you want to engage in.
Since you know that this isn't permitted you should have simply dropped it rather than try to justify an exception. If you felt strongly about the subject you could try to persuade staff to change the rules, rather than skirt them. The latter suggests that you are ignoring them mostly because it would be an expedient way to fix your phone.
.
ok, im not here to argue with you, I was only seeking help and being honest about it.
I could have left imei out of my whole post and just asked for help in restoring my nv and qcn backups.
or rather why my phone is not writing the backups. which is my whole intention.
ive seen many posts regarding them nv, efs and qcn but you seem to be fixated on the term imei so lets just let the post die or have it closed.
I understand what you are saying in regards to imei but that is just a part of nv efs and qcn backups. it is a risk that everyone takes when modding or customizing their phones, so backing them up and restoring as needed is always recommended.
If you have a backup of your EFS, simply restore it. That is straightforward, easily done and not controversial.
I thought you said you hadn't made a backup which is unfortunate. And I do have sympathy for the situation. But as you just said that is an expected risk of modding our phones. Having a broken phone isn't cause to ignore a set of rules that say this topic is forbidden due to abuse.
.
Hey mate,
I had almost the same problem. After a few days i finally got my phone working by doing what is in this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55953093&postcount=29
Good luck and let me know if you need any help or if what i did isn't clear and i can give you some proper instructions. Make sure you backup everything before you do this just in case something even worse happens.
Mod Edit
Changing imei is illegal.
No such discussions are allowed on XDA.

Found location of 13.3.2.7 OS to manually rollback from 4.1/5

I am relatively new here, but was reading some threads and a couple people have said that the community hasn't found the 13.3.2.7 update to manually force a rollback. A couple days ago I called Amazon because I had updated to 4.5 and needed to go back to root.
Since then I have been looking around for where the patch was saved to and found the scripts that setup for the OS update and the scripts to run it. The scripts show where it is and what commands are called to do the update, but the actual 13.3.2.7 OS seems to be hidden. I know where it says it should be, but its hidden somehow. If this is something anyone wants copies of my files on let me know, if this isn't something the community needs I apologize, just trying to help get this tablet further along.
Either post here or message me if you want/need what I have.
Why don't you just post your findings so far on this thread?
I was under the impression that OTA files are downloaded to the /cache folder, therefore inaccessible without root.
Either way, updates are still verified (see: /system/app/otaverifier.apk) by the system, so I'm not sure how you'd get around that.

I see, that part is already known then. Other posts I read people were still looking for it, but I was sure if i found it many others have too. I'm still looking around though, I found the verification coding also, thanks for that. I am thinking about updating my tablet again, and having them roll it back again, but this time running a packet sniffer. Might possibly get some really good info about the verification process or at least the steps it takes to make the rollback. I did a search but haven't seen anyone try this, it's probably heavily encoded though.
Another thing I noticed while looking around... They put a kill switch fuse in it? That's pretty rough, and what causes it to activate? Software modification or Hardware like Jtags?

once rooted again .it may be possible to modify your build.prop like we were on past firmware to achieve rollback just to initiate download ,it will ultimately fail once it downloaded it and trys to install it will check a few more things it will fail and erase it ...the trick would be not too let the device idle..or to have the battery below I believe 30 percent it may be as high as 40 I'm not sure but I believe under 30 it will refuse to install update delay till charged ,anyway it may buy you time to find it

That is actually a very good idea, something I am testing right now is getting the FireOS to run in VMware. I have a standard Android KitKat OS running, but getting the Kindle's OS to run is giving me a few issues. I am very skittish to try this stuff on my actual device as it's brand new and I don't have a backup... But if I can I will give you idea a shot. Might be able to save it before it deletes. Also if I can get it going in VMware it might be possible to use a debugger to examine the ASM code in great detail.

I didn't have any problem doing the modifications myself and I'm no Pro that's for sure. Never written a line of code in my life. I just tend to thoroughly research and understand before I attempt things and I've been practicing here for a while if you go to the, rollback .0.1 and safestraped thread there is quite detailed instructions serval times throughout the thread I would skim it.you will just be substituting version numbers and kind of a inverse idea compared to what we were doing there but it should accomplish it. I used rOM Toolbox lite I believe as an editor and saved each timeI didn't have any problems with the permissions getting screwed up while tampering with it rOM Toolbox took care of that issue. I have seen tons of people brick trying to make these modifications. But I don't think they understood completely what they were attempting to do it's actually very simple and as long as you do it thoroughly and get all of them changed I have not seen any problems other than maybe having to repeat the process.there are a couple of lines that only use the last section of your version numbers I even changed those back then.
