I started this thread because I lost lots of time to find the answer to my problem scattered over many, many threads. I hope this posting can save a lot of time for others.
The problem
The HTC Universal suffers from the problem that the device turns off while the battery indicator still shows juice left.
The cause
It's the battery or the way how the device interacts with the battery. It can have something to do with ROM upgrading while the battery is not at 100%.
Solution 1: Buy new battery
A lot of people will immediately tell you to buy another battery. That's a solution. Batteries are not that expensive anymore. See Ebay for example.
Solution 2: Recalibrate the battery
For me it wasn't a solution (it was a new device with a brand new battery! And yes, I upgraded to WM6 immediately after purchase)
Source: the greatest part of the solution for me was provided here by Jwrightmcps.
1. Charge the battery overnight with the supplied poweradapter, not with the USB cable, then:
2. Drain the battery without SD-card, powersaving off and backlight on full, then:
3. At some level, the device will turn off. Switch it on and go to the bootloader by backlight+power+reset button and drain the battery until it's really empty, then:
4. Charge the battery again with the supplied poweradapter

You can also try to put your battery in the freezer overnight (wrap it in plastic) to drain it, as I once did with a laptop battery. Let it get back to room temperature before you insert it back into your device.

Prevention
Always drain your battery before you charge it.
Charge the battery with the power adapter not with the USB cable or car adapter
My story
I bought the device new in store and charged it in the car when driving home (one hour). After that I hooked up the device to my PC and upgraded to WM6. In the evening, when the battery was arround 40% it shut down... Never got a battery low warning.

Effects of Bootloader mode?
A simple (silly?) question: if I enter Bootloader Mode do I loose all my data? Can I enter bootloader mode and just restart with no more effects than a soft reset?
When to exit bootloader-mode (i.e. reboot the device normally)? Before charging (before step #4) or after it is fully charged (after step #4)?

Well I don't want to invest in my universal as i'm changing it to another one, so I'd better fix my battery. I tried to do like this:
- discharge battery to 40% (device shut down)
- connected the + and - to a battery-powered speaker system and played music some time. This could discharge it more, what do you think about it? Well I can't say from my experience because I must wait for my device to discharge now

The bootloader mode is used in this example to drain the battery. The bootloader is 'exited' when the battery is empty...
Draining the battery in the bootloader mode will take long, because backlight is not enabled.

No, you don't will loose your date.

That is also a nice way to drain the battery. Be carefull that you don't shortcircuit the battery.
doesn't work for me, seem it is a software wm6 reason, so probably there is one solution:
ROLLBACK TO WM5
maybe try to change another part of rom? update bootloader? i don't know... i prefer wm6 over wm5 but this gives me no choice...

when i had this problem, i just bought a fat battery... and followed the prevention steps. I only charge when my battery warning notification appears (less than 10%) and I dont use the usb cable anymore. When I recall why I got the problem with the previous bat, i realize it was because i had been using wm5torage a lot which required plugging usb cable. So now, when I need to sync my phone, I just use my old bat. My new bat has never given me problems (had it for 6 months now) and Im happy with it (although it streeetched my case a bit).
Just a few question before I do all the steps:
1. why we should charge it overnight on 1st step? can we stop charging after greenlight?
2. why drain batt without SD card? Can we drain it with SD inserted?
3. after on bootloader mode, it's only it? just leave it like that untill batt really empty itself?

When I entered bootloader mode at 50% battery remaining it turns off after a short while. I connected the battery to a small motor to drain it but after a short while that too stops. When I checked the battery with volt meter it still showed 45-50% charge. What should I do to drain it?

Same with me. 2 times bootlader mode, just luck on 25% left before really off. Never got drain until 0%.
Connect it to a Voltmeter and lavce it connected until the voltmeter read 0.0volts. But be warned this might take a WHOLE DAY OR TWO. Has anyone tried the freezer method? does it really drain the battery?
I'm going to try the freezer method.

Tried freezer initially for 5 minutes and then for whole hour no harm came to battery but no gain as well! Charge didn't drop even one percent. Isn't there some fast way? Waiting with voltmeter for a couple of days is tiresome.
And now the agony has increased even though battery is fully charged if I remove the charger my device turns off. Trouble is that original batteries aren't available here in Pakistan, Rawalpindi to be precise. Now what to do?
Freezer method
I tried the freezer method for one night.
Next morning I took out the battery and let it come to roomtemp.
Took a long time charging (2,5 hours), but no result.
My device switch off randomly some time at 95% some time 50% etc.
i am using jw wm6.

you know what? I wonder if it isn't just a problem with jw rom... because most people encountering that problem use jw's rom... could anyone check it out? because my neww uni comes in few days...
Yesterday everything was OK. I flashed my phone to newest version of OpenEclair, put phone on charger (like every night) and then went to sleep.
Today, when i plug phone off charger they automatically turn off. When i plug charger on the phone is running ok, but everywhere (eg. in Spare Parts) they shows that battery is 0% charged, battery level is Good (100%), and battery temperature is 67.7*C (153.86*F).
I tried to insert other battery to Phone. I found that, Nokia BL-5C battery have similiar parameters, but everything was identical to situation on original battery.
What may be wrong? What should I do?

Use the recovery image in my sig if you don't have it already and wipe battery stats, reboot and let the phone charge fully.

HTC battery & charger: phone turns on (on power on blink one time red) and after 1min they shut down without any information
Nokia BL-5C battery & charger: phone turn on (blink one time red) and still runs without any problems.
I'm not sure, is that battery or phone disfunction? Important is that Nokia BL-5C battery has only 3.7Wh. HTC battery has 4.25Wh.
Damn your phone is 2x hotter then mine xD
its only shown temperature, i dont believe [and dont feel] this temperature

My comment was assuming he started with a full charge in the first place.
Reboot the phone and use it normally, but don't charge until it shuts off.
Recharge the phone completely and then use as you normally would.

I have bought new battery for g1, and this problem still exists...
Is any program or anything, which "cheats" system about battery?
Phone can run out of charger only in recovery menu - at normal theyre shutdowing because of low battery.
Can i do anything without visiting service? Any ideas?

Sounds like phone. A new battery would've solved this problem. Why do you not wanna visit service? Just unroot and demand a replacement.
Hello! i have problem with my streak 5, few days ago battery drained out and phone shut down.
i connected ti a charger but nothing happen, no reaction on phone so i left it on charge all night.
Still no response, no picture on the screen, no backlight, no LED, completely dead.
I can get reaction only when i enter in fastboot mode (holding power+camera)
IN this mode touch screen not working, computer recognize device and i can do flash and i do it successfuly but i still cant turn on my phone.
What can be a problem, I tried everything with no luck, also i have not found anyone with same problem

Try changing the battery. The one you have could be defective, or else there is an issue with the charging circuit.
I measured with instrument 3,67V, connected od 1 and 4. And few other combination i get from 3,30 to max 3,67V.
This seem to be ok, regardless of that you think might be the battery?
Never let the battery drain that much becase now the battery doens't have enough power to start the charging... you should charge the battery manual with some wires on (+) and (-) from a old phone charger be carefull with the voltage(V) and the ampers(A) not to brake the battery, 20 or 30 min should be enough, or you should buy one of this Universal charger. Then place the battery in the phone and it should work ok .
This morning I optimistically tried to turn on a phone and it was successful
battery Indicator showing 7% so i connected to charger, now is normaly charging, everything is working normally...
I do not understand, what could happen? i few times drained battery to 0% but still able to charge, maybe battery is problem, but again, turned on after 3 days
Don't worry the battery is ok the problem is not to empty it again to 0%, at 5% 7% close the phone if you don't have a charger to charge it. This method applies to every phone and battery. It's not a good thing to fully discharge.
Now is fully charged and power is 4,07V.
So obviously battery caused this problem.
I think, good info for all who suspect on battery, 4,07 V is power you need to have on fully charged battery.
With 3,6V you cant event turn on the phone.

Hi guys,
First of all these are my specs
N7 WiFi 16GB - 4.2.2 PA
Yesterday I tried to turn on my N7 but no go... so i thought: no battery since I didn't used my N7 for 2-3 days. I put it on charge a few hour but then when i tried to turn it on, again... nothing, so i tried to reset and hard reset but no effect... afte letin it a few more hour on charge I tried yet again and noting... i tried to keep power button presed for 30 sec, 60sec, etc... nothing...
Then i conected it to my PC and realized that nor W7 nor W8 recognized my device... It says "USB device not recognized" and also in device manager it says "Unknown device"
The thing is that when I Hard reset it conected to the PC it seems to restart since i get the "disconnected device" sound from windows and the then message "USB device not recognized" appears again...
I want to make this clear MY SCREEN NEVER TURNS ON! so i can't get in recovery or bootloader mode
Also fastboot doesn't see it
And yes I have the correct drivers on my PC on both W7 and W8...
So PLS...ANY Idea would be appreciated!!

As far as I can tell there is battery, so that is not the problem ...
Probably would be best to send it to warranty and see what they say ...

Since the screen never comes on in any circumstance, what do you mean by "as far as I can tell"?
Normally - if the device is powered off - the bootloader (or some other low-level firmware?) displays a charging animation in the display when you plug the device into a charger. If the battery is completely discharged, it will show up as empty (all black with a white outline), and then display a "filling up" animation. If the battery is mostly charged, that animation starts with the battery icon almost full (mostly white) and the animation shows a "topping off" display.
In any event, if you can see that animation, you will know the exact charge state of the battery: the percentage of the battery charge is shown as the percentage of the battery which is white at the beginning of that animation.
But, since you are saying that you are seeing nothing, then you have no idea whether the battery has a charge unless you pull off the connector and measure the battery voltage: discharged is ~ 3.5v and fully charged just shy of 4.2v.
The thing you are seeing on the PC is probably APX mode. It is usually a sign of serious trouble - but only if you have positively verified that the battery has a decent charge.
Anyway, my point is that you kneed to know unambiguously whether the battery has a charge or not before you proceed any further. A discharged battery looks identical to a hard-bricked device.
BTW, I suppose that in APX mode the device is drawing a small amount of current; this means it will inevitably discharge the battery again if it is left in that mode.
So, here is one suggestion:
Take the back cover off the device and unplug the battery. Let the device sit for ten minutes or so with the battery disconnected. (If you have a voltmeter, you can measure the battery voltage at this time so long as you are able to do it safely - don't accidentally short it! - and without damaging the connector. If not, don't worry about it). Press the power button once or twice during this time to dissipate any stored charge in the device.
Then, reconnect the battery pack, but do not attempt to start the device yet! Just plug the N7 onto the charger and see if you observe the charging display. If you see the charging display, don't get all excited and try to start the device up right away! Let it charge for a couple hours before attempting to start it. If you don't see anything at all, it still might be a good idea to leave it sit on the charger for a few hours before attempting to start it up.

My J5 2016 510-FN is displaying the wrong percentage of battery and it's shutting down at roughly 15/20% sometimes 25%.
I've let it completly run out of battery and charging it to 100% while being off and it still didn't solve the problem..
What shoudl I do?

This usually happens when the battery starts to wear.
A little tip to try:
Charge to 100% then Power off then turn on the phone with charging cable out.
If charge percentage has gone down put cable in and charge to 100% again.
Repeat the above until it stays at 100% after reboot.

Also, does debloating, using greenify, build.prop and other stuff make my battery last longer?
