Go to below link, download and flash latest fastboot ROM.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6t/how-to/rom-stock-fastboot-roms-oneplus-6t-t3862516
If that does not work, use MS tool to recover phone to factory state.

Thanks this worked for me. Was freaking out a little. The scene has really changed since I've been here.

As an FYI, in order to root on this phone, assuming you are using Magisk (recommended) you will need to:
Unlock bootloader
Install custom rom (Optional step, but also recommended)
Then flash TWRP zip (This phone, TWRP is part of the boot.img)
Boot the phone
Reboot to recovery
Install GAPPS (OpenGAPPS Stock recommended personally, but any should work)
Then flash Magisk

Correct. I edited my comment to reflect that, however since OP installed a custom rom, I put the step in since I figured he would have asked about it.

Ok so my phone currently is bootloader unlocked and rooted with magisk. So if I want to install a custom rom I flash in twrp, then flash twrp (while still in twrp), boot phone, reboot to recovery, flash gapps then flash magisk?

read the OP in any custom rom you want to flash, and the dev will have the details on how to flash..

Essentially. Each custom ROM is differrent, so make sure to read the OP of each custom ROM you try to confirm flashing instructions but that's the **general** flashing method I use. Magisk is overwritten with each flash because Magisk installs to the same partition as the kernel.

root without custom recovery

Guys is that possible to root without flashing twrp recovery? Some says it's possible with magisk manager app which does not require custom recovery. I tried with kingroot but failed... Kindly help on this because I don't want to flash custom roms but I need root.

It's impossible as you can see kingroot was also failed. You need an unlocked device with a custom installed.

1. its impossible to root without custom recovery
2. Magisk needs custom recovery
3. I have never had any luck in rooting any of my phones using king-root. it will not work on Xiaomi Rn3 or Rn4. not sure about other device
4. Custom ROM is different and Custom recovery is different, - To root you NEED custom recovery. Custom ROM can only be installed after rooting and its purely your choice.
Hope my answer helped. Feel free to get back if any doubts
You can temporarily boot into twrp and install root if you have unlocked bootloader

Indeed. With fastboot, you can boot into a local (ie, on your PC) copy of TWRP
Code:
fastboot boot mytwrp.img

Installing SuperSU or any root app needs custom kernel installed, if you flash it on stock kernel then its anti-root mechanism will get activated and it will refuse to boot;
now first flash the stock rom via fast boot from here : https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4-plus/how-to/stock-rom-npjs25-93-14-4-march-1-t3608138
then after its booted successfully, then flash the TWRP from fastboot and flash the ElimentalX kernel from TWRP, reboot and check the kernel info in about phone in settings; after then
simply flash SuperSU or magisk from TWRP to get root access

Re-Rooting 1+5 after OS 5.1.1 Update

So I tried updating to Oxygen is 5.0 ran into an install issue, stuck in boot loop. Lucky I had done a Nandroid back up and restore everything. The other night I decided to update to 5.1.1 thinking why not get Android 8.1.0 on my AWESOME phone. Downloaded update, placed in internal storage, booted into TWRP to do a Nandroid back up (due to issues with past update). Back up failed needed to clean drive. So I decided, phone works in Android 7.1.1, why can't what's not broken. Rebooted phone and somehow the update activated. I freaked since last time it failed and not stuck in a loop. This time update was successful but still got stuck in a boot loop. I plugged my phone to my computer and noticed all my files were gone on their install storage, no files / foldersI recognized (e.g. DCIM, DATA, DOWNLOAD, etc). Emailed One Plus and chatted with them. TWRP was gone and was back on stock recovery. Since all was lost I was asked to "Erase All". I did, rebooted and I'm now on 8.1.1 but all my stuff was lost. So I've done since searching and found FlashFire do to a Nandroid backup but need root. So my question is...
Can I re-root my phone without using TWRP but stock recovery and use FlashFire for my back ups? I am not going to flash custom ROM but if I need to flash something, wouldn't stock ROM flash anything on my phone (Magisk)?
If so, can anyone provide me with assistance on re-rooting my phone without TWRP.
Thank you
As far as i know you can't flash anything with stock recovery so you can't root. After flashing the stock os is normal that twrp is been erased by the stock. Just re flash the twrp. I mean, maybe i didn't get the problem, why you can't reflash twrp? If you do that flash twrp codeworx Universal with fastboot in the bootloader, boot in twrp, wipe cache/dalvik, flash magisk 15.3, wipe cache/dalvik, reboot system, update magisk to 16 with the app. I do that way and it worked
Hi
To root your OnePlus 5, you must to follow carefuly the steps below and take your time.
1 - Make a full backup of your data
2 - Unlock the bootloader (Note that'll erase your phone)
3 - Install another recovery : TWRP. This one : https://sourceforge.net/projects/ch...-20180414-codeworkx-cheeseburger.img/download
4 - Flash the full rom Oxygen OS 5.1.1 : http://otafsg.h2os.com/patch/amazon...23_OTA_034_all_1804201219_3824995916a49ee.zip
5 - Install magisk : https://github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk/releases/download/v16.0/Magisk-v16.0.zip
6 - Clear cache / Dalvik
7 - You're all done, reboot the phone
8 - Once your phone has booted up, install magisk manager : https://github.com/topjohnwu/MagiskManager/releases/download/v5.7.0/MagiskManager-v5.7.0.apk
Check this tread, that'll help you as well : https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5/how-to/oneplus-5-unlock-bootloader-flash-twrp-t3624877

Hello, thanks for the info and yes, I did try flashing Magisk with stock recovery, while waiting for a reply and can confirm installation failed. So if I reflash TWRP, flashing Magisk using TWRP will work. Therefore, do you have instructions (step-by-step) on how to install TWRP. I have downloaded the latest TWRP image from their website (twrp-3.1.1-1 cheeseburger) onto my desktop. Bootloader is already unlocked as I was previously rooted under Android 7.1.
Thank you.

This is the official guide step by step, scroll down until you find "flashing twrp" if you had already unlocked the bootloader ( you already did that right??? xD). Anyway about the recovery and magisk version. The guys in the 5.1.1 thread advised to flash magisk 15.3 instead the 16 and only after the system reboot to make the upgrade to 16 with magisk app (dunno why). But when i tried to do that the last version of twrp (3.1.1-1) failed the flash. So i flashed the twrp 3.1.1-0-universal and 15.3 magisk. I can confirm this combination work, i can't tell for other combinations.

Hey there, sorry for the late response..but thank you for the assist..phone is rerooted..all is good..thanks again

Device is unlocked and rooted but twrp is gone ?

guys,
I just rooted my Op6 following this how to https://www.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6t-unlock-bootloader-root/
I booted my device, whent to Magisk did the install by sellecting install directly which was recomended then booted, it was succesfull. However, when I reboot to recovery to enter twrp, the device just boots to the stock recovery. How can I install twrp permanently with my rooted Op6t ? I like to flash to custom roms.
You should perhaps just read carefully this thread
https://forum.xda-developers.com/on...overy-unofficial-twrp-touch-recovery-t3861482
And get familiar with all the notions necessary to flash ROMs before jumping in
Considering what you've done it's logical that you don't have TWRP as you in fact didn't installed it, just temporary booted it

rooting shield

So i recently installed developer image 8.0 on my 2017 16gb shield, now i want to install twrp and then flash the kernel to increase cpu and gpu clock and mainly full fan control, i have read that there is no root available but with dev image which is already rooted is it safe to install twrp and the kernel and how do i do it, thank you.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/shield-tv/development/kernel-overclock-kernel-2-22-ghz-t3943079
There is root available, works with both the developer image but also the stock ota.
All the kernel's/modified boots there comes with magisk root.
If you have no idea how to do it, I wouldn't suggest you start doing it.
But there a plenty of guides here on the forum on how to root, flash images and boot into twrp.
I guess my question is as the dev edition is already rooted do i need to install magisk or just flash the kernel which is what i wanted to begin with. So just to twrp temporarily and then flash kernel but not install twrp, i am not entirely sure.

You can boot into twrp from fastboot.
"fastboot boot twrp.img"
Magisk is included in the kernel, so if you flash the kernel, magisk will also be installed.
I understood that part, so do i have to flash twrp after flashing kernel with temporary twrp or just leave as it is with stock recovery for it to work.

I would suggest just leaving the stock recovery there.
I tried flashing twrp and ended with a bootloop, so now I just boot into twrp instead.
