Bought a 3T in 2019 - OnePlus 3T Guides, News, & Discussion

Hey Guys
Just bought a 128GB 3T today.. picked it up for £180.. as new condition with charger, but no box...
really impressed with how fast and smooth it is.. and that we are getting P shortly even after 2 years..
Running OS 508, Camera is really fantastic for a 2 year old phone and can easily match an S7 or an S8.. Single speaker is pretty loud and clear, and headphone audio is stunning on a pair of AKGs., but still testing battery life and SoT
I came from a Nokia 7 Plus.. I changed due to Nokia failing to fix the Wifi non-connection issue since November.. Camera is not that great and making and receiving Phonecalls don't always connect (phone is often dead or "number does not exist" message)..which is a shame, because its great to see Nokia coming back from Microsoft.
My only gripe with my 3T is I find the in-call volume abit low.. although Ive read this is a common problem..
Anyway, very pleased with this great device...

Not everybody has an issue with the volume. I, for one, am happy with the way it is in my phone, so I've not needed to use the fix.

Still using my 3T as my daily driver (as I'm sure is the same for most of the folks still on this device forum section). I know a newer phone will be faster/smoother. You often don't realize how much faster a new phone will be, until you actually make that switch. But for now, the 3T does all I need or want it to.
To a large extent, we are hitting the point of diminishing returns for buying a new smartphone every year (or even 2 years or more). Folks are increasingly starting to skip upgrades, as the performance difference or new features don't justify the price (especially $1000 or more for a "flagship" iPhone, Samsung, etc.).
Just as important, still a decent sized community here for this device. Getting a little quiet. But still a lot of helpful members, ROM development, etc.

Welcome to the club!
Still rocking with my 3T as-well.
I realized that performance-wise, the 3T covers all my needs from a smartphone, so upgrading to a newer chipset is purely a waste of my money.
The only thing that will cause me to upgrade is the "outer shell" of the phone.
I am not a big fan of notches to say the least, so up until now, I held back from upgrading.
With the 7 coming out, i'll have to re-asses my stand

I can't stand those notches either! It drives me nuts that the manufacturers think that protruding a big notch onto the screen is preferable in order to make the bezel a little smaller. Or really the main reason all the manufacturers are doing this, is because Apple did it, and the other companies feel like they need to copy it. Same as removing the headphone jack. No consumers actually like this, it's only because Apple did it, and all the other companies follow like lemmings.

My wife bought me the 3T just over 2 years ago for £475.
I removed the plastic screen protector after the first year, second year I started playing about with custom ROMs. It's an amazing device, I plan on keeping it for as long as possible. No slow down, still does what I need and plays the games I play (which are not many) and your right the camera is pretty amazing. You should install the gcam port and the pictures become much better.

Suggest me a best custom ROM with good gaming performance

Don't know about "best" as the best for you might not be the best for somebody else.
Suggest you try a few out.
I am using Ressurection Remix and very happy with it.

How is the gaming performance?

I still does not feel to change the device. I love 3T, I own iPhone and 6T but again back to 3T. Even after 2.5 yrs still looks and feel good in hand.

Thnx in advance

This year I started using the OnePlus 3T 64GB to replace the OnePlus 2 I had for 2/3 years
So far I'm getting 1 day standby out of it with some decent youtube and general use.
It doesn't look as though OnePlus are going to release an official Android 9 release (Boo!) Looks like custom ROMs then.
I might also but a One Plus 5. I don't like newer devices with a notch and no home button - am I stuck in the past?

Hey. A year ago I checked the gcam port. The front camera only clicked photos in 4mp resolution in OOS.
Has that been fixed? If yes I'll have to update my gf's 3T with the fix.

[Q] Is this the best phone for 400€?

As the topic title says, i'm looking for a new phone to replace my boring xperia s (bootloader loocked...) and the maximum i wanna spend is 400€. So,for this money the oppo find 5 is the best option? The feature that i most apreciate is taking photos, and my xperia s do it very well...

The camera is OK but nothing amazing in my experience which is fine for me and Faux kernel has done wonders my battery life (+30-40%). Not sure the camera can compare to the Xperia.
Despite those niggles, I'd recommend the F5 above others to friends if asked but it depends on your needs. I certainly prefer it over the Note 2 and Nexus 4. For me is the sweet spot between size, screen, performance and design.
What else is on your short list?
-- From my Find 5
Exactly the switch I made XS->Find5. I thought about getting the HTC One or the S4, but since I planned on running a custom ROM, I didn't want to pay for features I wouldn't use anyway.
Regrets? No. The Find5 has a Sony Sensor as camera, AFAIK the same as in the XZ. On stock ROM, the cam is pretty good, not so much on custom ROMs, though, usual closed source binary blob problems.

Hi!
If you are looking a brand new one, maybe this is the one with best camera for this price (I dont know anything about Nokia and WP) you can buy for that amount.
If you dont mind, maybe you can take a Xperia Z (same sensor, but better app) in the second market.
P.S: Yes, this is my first post in about 3 years LOL! (I prefer reading)

at the beggining i was thinking about xperia z (i'm a huge fan of the xperia line) or htc one (i don't like the samsung plastic), but i reconsidered that ... 550€ or more for a phone? i think it´s to much, so i stablished the 400€ limit, and for that money, and new phones (not used) i'm in between nexus 4 or the oppo find 5 ( i believe they are the only with superb specs and not so expensive phones ). But the nexus 4 is 4.7 inch screen, and an 8mp camera ( but i guess the 8mp i just a number).
3 things that i consider in a phone : camera; battery; development.
So, what you guys say?
If camera is a priority then you may be better looking elsewhere.
The Find 5 camera is OK in good light but struggles otherwise. My wife has a Nexus 4 and I don't rate that camera either.

I agree the Oppo is nothing to get mad excited about. The camera is very noisy. Actually in HDR mode my pictures on the Nexus 4 turned out way better!

Never had the chance to compare to a Xperia S.
But for the claims made by their commercial it doesn't live up to the promise.

I too am interested in this phone, one of my main concerns is battery life.
When you say you have about 30-40% more battery life, how many screen on time are you talking about? 5-6 hours?
Thank you.

Well you can forget the Stock firmware even with fauxes Kernel it will suck you dry. The best experience as far as battery life i had so far was with Cyanogenmod. Even so it is not running an optimized Kernel it seems to handle power mangement way better!
5-6 hours screen on is way over what you will be able to achieve with normal day 2 day use. For sure you will max out at the moment at 4 hours screen on time.
If you are looking for a new phone with lot's of battery life i would hold of another 1-2 month and see what others have to offer because Oppo didn't even release 4.2 yet but they are planning on in early August. Until then don't bother!
so, in conclusion, despite the problems with the camera ( which i think it's a software problem, not hardware ) for 400€, and with a custom rom, the oppo it's the best phone on the market?

Sorry just saw this... I've tried most of the stock/beta ROMs and as a light to moderate user, it lasts me about 24-36 hours. Without faux kernel I would get around 3 to 3.5 hours screen on (email, twitter, browser, Tapatalk, watching a TV show, taking pics/video and a few calls).
With faux setup for battery life, I can get 4.5 to 5 hours doing the same stuff and there isn't really a performance hit as I'm not doing much needing the phone to run at full speed for long.
It was really the idle drain that was killing it at around ~1.5%-2% per hour rather than ~0.8% with faux. Usually, I'm on wifi and have GPS on and leave them on when sleeping so it was overnight that saw a big improvement.

Yeah I used Stock to for a while and when you do close ups the camera makes some pretty nice pictures. But as soon as contrasts aren't really there anymore it gets potentially noisy.
I mean how much can you really expect from a smartphone camera sensor without any optics to adjust depth.
Your pictures are nice. I made some nice ones myself but they don't measure up to HTC One's Ultrapixel contrast and light condition abilities.
Funny part about all of this is probably that drivers neither on Stock or Custom are really optimized.
I do though still think the state the phone is in right now it is not worth it. Neither Stock Software nor Custom give you a really great experience with the device right now.

After trying numerous stock and custom ROM/kernel combinations, I have to disagree. Last week's Chinese Firefly is, IMO, very usable in terms of performance, battery life, and reliability.

Hey there! Well I had an S6 last year and I sold it mainly for 2 reasons: 1) Awful battery life. And 2) Because I got used to onscreen buttons (I had an LG G3 before the S6) and I just couldn't go back to a physical home button lol.
As far as battery life, my personal opinion and experience is that the 6P is a LOT better than the S6. Even out of the box, without tweaking it that much. Now if you get a custom kernel and you tweak that then even better.
As far as custom roms go, I've only tried two, Pure Nexus and Chroma and they are both very stable, haven't had any issues with them. So that could be a good place to start and then maybe if you want get a custom kernel too.
This is my first Nexus phone and I've been having a lot of fun tweaking it, playing with root, different roms, kernels, things I never did with my previous phones but with this one I took the plunge. The people here at XDA are extremely talented and always willing to help.
Hope this helps you

I can't give you a very informed opinion on that one honestly. All I can tell you is that mine hasn't experienced any bending issues, I use it with a dbrand skin and no case.
I've seen in several places that the issue got blown out of proportion, but I can't be sure just how many people have been affected by that. So maybe search here to see people's opinions

Definitely the Nexus6 P and XDA is a win!

[REFERENCE] To all those looking to purchase the Mate 8.

There are many people who come to xda to read reviews and tests about a device before purchasing it, some even check for custom ROMs to see if one has been released but always think more will come in the future. As it is now Custom ROMs based off CM or AOSP is NOT possible. It may NOT be possible in the future either so please buy accordingly.
Indeed.

The camera actually is not that bad in low lighting. I used Zenfone 2 previously, much worst.

Is the 6P a disappointment?

So as a real android enthusiast I bought a 6P 2 weeks back and I had really high hopes since everybody seems so stoked about this device.
After unboxing I was really impressed about the buildqualitiy and the quality of the components used to make this device, but since the first boot I'm really let down by the software experience.
I come from a OnePlus X which runs a custom rom (Resurrection Remix), the CPU governor is set to performance and all animations are speeded up by a factor of 0.75x. And I must say I have the feeling the OPX feels much smoother. At first I thought is was because of the animation speed, but I notice a lot of framedrops when animating, the RAM management seems of center (sometimes when I reopen the third app in the recents he has to reload the entire app!) and batterylife isn't that well either.
At first I thought the bad batterylife was the fault of an app I had written which wasn't optimized but nothing changed after uninstalling it.
I've done a reset of the device and have doubted to flash a custom kernel and set the governor to performance but I don't think you should need to change the software of a $600 phone for decent performance in 2016...
Am I the only one noticing this? I have the feeling that the software isn't optimized and it bugs me... If anyone can give me some tips that should help me, please do.
FYI: my device has about 3hours max of screen-on, the wifi, data and GPS are always turned on, same for bluetooth since it's connected with my watch and I have a mixed use throughout the day (facebook, chat, browsing, gaming,...)

How does this help him at all?
To the OP, it's ok to put custom software on your OPX to improve performance but not your 6P? Why?
I dunno mate, i think its just you. For me 6p is snappiest and fastest device i have ever owned. Before snapdragon 820devices started coming it was regarded as smoothest and fastest device by all review sites also. Even now, its still up there with the best. And battery life on oneplus x is mediocre, 6p is waay better, go look at gsmarena.com battery ratings. 3 hours of sot time with wifi, data, gps, bt turned on all the time and heavy usage is really not that bad. Im getting about 5h of sot, but my usage is not so heavy.
Because I have not noticed any of what OP has experienced. So my answer to his question was an unqualified NO!
And besides, he doesn't need help. He needs to stop posting useless posts.

I'll surely try custom software on the Nexus 6P but the main reason I haven't yet is that everybody is positive about the experience, I wanted to feel the experience non-flashing users have (and I have the feeling something is wrong -- this is why I asked it). I know I'm more forgiving about OPX's ****ty software because it's only $250, I didn't expect any issues (although it seems I'm the only one ) with the stock software of a $600 phone to be honest.

I posted it since I hoped it might have been caused by some service (like google play services). Not everybody has the same setup so maybe there were people with the same experience. And if you see this as a useless post you shouldn't comment on it.
So if anybody can relate to my cause, please say. I'm very curious since this can be more a problem of my perception of the software than the software itself.

What is your problem? Just because someone doesn't like your beloved phone you are just gonna razz him instead of help him or stay quiet?
My problem is people who want others to solve their problems by magic.
I do not believe in magic so I don't expect somebody to "fix" something. I just wanted to share my issue in the hope of learning more about android.
By the way, maybe it wasn't clear in my previous post but I do love this device. This is no hate post, more an educational post in which I have questions and hope to get answers from people who know about it
my 6p is great except for the mic and sound in calls, it sucks and disconnects a LOT, cant wait for the M10 !!
I'm not saying this because I'm a 6p owner, but because its the truth....anybody that says the 6p is a disappointment.... Could not possibly convince me any other phone makes them happy.
I would still take the 6p over ANY phone available at this time I'm writing this.

I love mine. That being said, the throttling is a huge issue on mine. Between that and Bluetooth issues, actually thinking of RMA.
No problems with mine except for the mic issue that is taking way too long for a fix IMO, the Google thread for the issue has been active for months.
Don't take people being defensive too hard. They tend to get that way.
To be honest you maybe right. Many developers here got the 6p and returned in short return for the older nexus 6.
As for on line reviews. You can't really put much faith in those as we have seen what happens when they speak honestly. They get cut off from future devices.

My sentiments exactly.

I am a new 6T user, what custom ROM would you recommend me to try out first?

My 6T would arrive tomorrow, my nexus 6p died couple days ago and 6T is the way to go!! I heard that the stock ROM on 6T is really good already, since I haven't taken a look at it, I am not sure what additional feature I can get from the custom ROM? Or should I even bother flashing a custom ROM? Please don't get me wrong, I do think all custom ROM must be fantastic, I am just not sure what the difference are yet.
Another question if you don't mind, I watched some 6T review on YouTube, I see that the speed is fast, but not smooth, they did a comparison between 6T and iphone xs, xs provides much better user experience on animation. I see that we can change the animation speed on developer mode, but since I haven't gotten the phone yet, would that provide the same experience as XS did? Or is there any custom ROM out here can do it?
Any suggestion would be appreciated. Thank you very much

This is my first oneplus device as well. I was fortunate enough to be broke until the McLaren came out. I'm rooted and magisk with a custom kernel. I can't think of anything else I would want that you can't do with magisk. Try stock and see what you think. This phone is great! I walk around like Ron Jeremy wearing skinny jeans with this device. There's a confidence that comes with this phone.
Comparing this phone to an iPhone XS is like comparing apples to mailboxes. iOS is a completely closed ecosystem, where Android is not. Of course things are going to "look better" on an iPhone because apps and the operating system itself are designed specifically for the hardware and vice versa. I can't stand iPhones, and I'll say this is easily the best Android phone I've ever had. With a few minor tweaks, you should be able to get whatever result you're after, because the hardware in the 6T is top notch.
Stock OOS now is much more stable than every custom ROM now, so i will suggest you to try stock OOS, may be with Magisk (ROOT) and see, what you can achieve with that.
At this moment no customs have working FP, but devs are working on it. If you don't mind about FP - go and try any of it.
What is fp?
Finger print scanner.
Keep it stock, it's great. Keep it at least until FP is supported in custom.

I do agree with you, I am not trying to compare 6T with XS, I always use Android phone. What I do like about XS is the smoothness experience it provides to users, 6T's speed is over-killing XS, but I can definitely tell XS is smoother than 6T in the UI part from the video, which I think everyone would like to have that in their own phone.
And of course!!! This is the best Android phone we can get for this price!!! I am happy I am going to have this phone tomorrow!! Really exited.

Really helpful suggestion, will definitely keep it in stock for now. Any idea we can make the UI smoother?
Speed up animation speed in developer options.

can you give me an advice about what you did after you root the phone besides custom kernel? So far I haven't seen a need to use a custom kernel, any other COOL feature you can think of?

I did usqe a a custom kernel and I think it may have improved the battery a little bit, but other than that I disable a couple apps and I use greenify. I dont think I could drain this phone in one day if I tried. I am using an app called Magic Fluids as my live wallpaper with the graphics turned all the way and it's not even the least bit warm. Cool app for showing off. Here's a Pic of kinda what it does.

No, I meant speed them up. They feel more snappy that way.
See attached.
